My theory is that good colors and kitbashes can compensate for what's lacking in technical skill, and I think the contrasting bright blue on the alieny bits worked. Okay. These days I pay out for nuln oil like a pig and life's a bit easier, but diy washes where there for me. Also I never got over using cheapo paints for terrain. Here's a novel one: Liquid Pigment from the Model Railroad store. It's designed to color plaster, but I use it as a "everything wash" over terrain pieces and it looks fantastic, albeit grimy as hell. The bottle's expensive but lasts forever.
