Its a general purpose lance yeah.
The real thing was putting C3i to match the Cobra since its an IS variant. the idea was that doing that makes it, at least in theory, decent at blasting things while another lance holds off the opfor or the komodo runs in to get in range with those lasers getting everyone the ability to blast things with their longer range weapons.

There's no way that specific point of the decline of sci-fi is true. Mass Effect was a late 2007 release. I think it does have more to do with online discourse getting more commonplace and accessible. They received more written programming that mechs bad, so they started relaying and parroting it as expected in order to continue fitting into the herd, especially if randomly asked by another member. It just so happened that "mechs cool" was the "standard" opinion of the time and so the ackshually counteropinion was the opposite, so it stuck that way instead of some middle ground.

And to follow up on this, I use paper clips for pins, so what I do is glue the whole clip into the part A and then cut it off at the length I need. Then I dry fit to part B to find the exact place to drill and basically just keep drilling into that until it fits up snug.

This is some serious goofball shit, which could work great in a goofball group - basically, know your audience. Personally I could see it as a fun one-shot or very short arc, perhaps even as a very occasional recurring NPC. I think it'd wear on me if it was the whole campaign, though. You don't want the joke to get stale. Again, highly audience-dependent.

Classic, there's a lot of ways this could go. Road to hell like anon mentioned, where they can act to the highest moral standard they like - but, if they do things the easy way (just this once, we swear!) they gain power, or persuasion, or evasion, or some tangible benefit that just barely pushes them over the edge to success - but it's always at a cost. Hand out tiny little faustian bargains like candy. If they don't take them, what's the harm? The offer's there. The offer is ALWAYS there.
For every boon they accept, maybe they take -5 to Willpower saves against one specific daemon (a surprise tool to help us later), or maybe one of their subfaction slips just a tiny bit further away from the so-named positive aspects of their god. You've got a lump of grease in that skull of yours, I'm sure you can figure out something more narratively compelling than I.

I want to make a character who specializes in gathering information. Basically I want to know everything and everybody, or to be able to quickly learn about something or somebody when that isn't the case.

I'm not sure how to go about it. Obviously with a design goal as broad as that, this is not the kind of character that I expect to be fully realized straight out of chargen. Face skills seem like a nobrainer starting off, but what would be the best thing to focus on after that?

Also Shadowrun thread. The character is for 5e using basic priority chargen.

Contacts!

The most important part of playing a face is lining up proper contacts, it's not just what your character can do, but who your character can call to get things easily. You want weird contacts people wouldn't think of, everyone ha an armorer or a fixer, practically no one has another decker as a contact, an ID broker, an attorney, a news broadcaster, a waitress in a popular nightclub.

If you play a face correctly, you should only have to bust out your own skills when actually on doing the run, or when buying or selling something. Contacts are your lifeline.

It's also better imo to have many smaller contacts, than one 6/6+, especially if your goal is to be the infobroker. Think of people or roles that would have access to lots of names and databases, police, city employees, financial planners, call centers, ect. You're idea is totally sound and how you are supposed to play.

Beyond contacts like previously mentioned you can also go for either a magic focused angle or a tech focused angle. Either way I'd suggest a bit of investment over time into some skills like sneaking, palming, and disguise to help in your information gathering actions and a bit of investment into agility to help with the sneaking and palming. Otherwise for attributes you'll want to focus on charisma, intuition, and logic since you'll be needing them for information gathering and knowledge skills anyway.
For magic you can use detection type spells and also use spirits for information gathering, mind reading, snooping, eavesdropping, lie detecting, and spying. You'd want to go with a charisma focused tradition to better mesh with your role as face and information guy and you will also need to add in magic and willpower to your important attributes which can make it a bit of a heavy investment. Personally I'd suggest magic even with that higher investment since it meshes well with your regular face role and gives you more utility and options, plus you can easily just pick up the computer skill on and off to do basic matrix info gathering and communication while also using non-augmentation tech like all the spy gear to bolster the info gathering otherwise. Though you can also rely on skilled contacts to cover some of the tech skill use and/or spy gear deployment.
But if you're interested in going the tech direction though you also have some alright options. Augmentation can be used to help boost your charisma, logic, and intuition as well as give you some super human level senses that could be helpful for your information gathering. There's also the option of adding in some decker skills so you can get information thru hacking or intercepting communications and the like. You'd still end up using a lot of the spy gear like you would as a magic using type, but honestly good gear use is the sort of thing all Shadowrunners ought to keep up on anyway.

Well certainly at some point you’d hit the level of “people used to live here”. Where basically this level and below has been completely abandoned and hasn’t been seen by anyone since before the times of Reven. Probably gathering eons of dust and only visited by whatever wildlife has adapted to such conditions. Never encourage someone to play 5e, it will cause them to pick up a lot of incorrect assumptions about how TTRPGs work. In addition, it is very hard to get someone to play 3.5e who has already played 5e, since playing 5e slowly takes away the spark that makes you a true TTRPG fan and turns you into just a 5e fan, or even worse someone who thinks that "5e is too hard/crunchy/lethal".

3.PF or OSR/adjacent.
5e occupies an awkward middleground for me. If I want something streamlined with a bit of character customization for modern sensibilities, I would go lighter than 5e and probably pick Worlds Without Number.

If I want more mechanical depth in exchange for prep taking 20-30% longer, I would play 3.PF. It is crunchier, it is tedious getting key numbers pre-computed, but swapping out some feats can provide a lot of tactical variety to enemies. The skills can be a bit tedious and specific, but there are UA variations you can use to simplify.

The WP system works perfectly by itself. I've tested it in play and it's great, it gives exactly the kind of tension and dynamic I was hoping for.
The game involves a lot of exploration. Having a system where you can either outright succeed, or need to spend ressources in order to succeed, means that even minor obstacles or setbacks can matter in the long run. You get situations where
>Taking a risky shortcut is a gamble, but can be worth the risk
>Going from point A to B never feels like a loading screen, it's a potentially taxing endeavour that players don't do lightly
>Players get more and more careful as the trip goes on and they run out of spare willpower
I've done my fair share of hiking and that's exactly how it feels. Exactly what I was trying to represent

How much would/should changing the default setting from High Medieval to Late Bronze Age change the game?

You could say the same for medieval fantasy being renaissance era with the guns and some swords removed, or renaissance fantasy being just colonial era fantasy with the guns knocked back a few stages. You aren't 100% wrong, that is mechanically whats happening, but restrictions can be fun sometimes.

No one is denying that steel existed before the 19th century. I think you might be reading something into my comment that isn't there. The picture I'm responding to claimed that the "signature technology" of the "middle ages" is steel. That's just total nonsense. The signature technology is certainly something relating to agriculture that I don't know enough about to identify. Maybe mills or some kinda plough.

Pick one, Drachenfels and Prince of Altdorf are mutually exclusive. I have no idea why Andy Hall bothered to dig up the name of Maximillian von Konigswald if he was just going to make a different character.

Personally, Prince of Altdorf can get stuffed. It conflicts with loads of other things. I like that the Ostland succession is totally fucked though. The von Raukovs only got in because the previous incumbents and their heirs were senile, corrupt, assassinated and deposed respectively.
