Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR-era D&D, derived systems, and compatible content.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons as played in the game's first decade — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started.

Why the hell was this post deleted, it's not trolling in the slightest, it's genuine game advice.
If you're gonna do gold spent = XP at least the carousing rules has a stamp of approval. Doubly rewarding players for spending money in ways they'd normally spend it is retarded. Your reward for spending money on a Cure spell is that you get Cured. If players don't level fast enough put out more treasure or lower the XP requirements per level.

They mostly take people in desperate situations and trade off favours. There's mention of long-term arrangements/covenants, where a survivor is invested with power in exchange for a long-term partnership. Going by the cards, they feed on the survivors themselves or receive blood sacrifices in exchange for their support. No sign of old-fashioned written contracts, it seems all they run on is a handshake, drop of blood and a promise.

>Thanks! I figured it'd serve well as a more traditionally Xianxiaish outfit once the cyan/cultivation markings starts to set in. Could be his sect robes in the third stage.
They’d work well for sect robes, yeah.

>Thinking about a scene a bit where the mindscape/dreamscape is starting to properly get formed and how much that alone could change ones perception of themselves. Or just how they see sleeping in general.
You’d probably start cultivating Divine Delusion while sleeping.
>>
>>96465817
For context, I'm wondering what Adyseach might request in exchange for temporary companionship and ten years worth of knowledge from him, if I don't want to actually offer him a ticket off of Duskmourn.
Maybe 200cp's worth of jumper power is enough to pay off the whole debt, since that's what it costs to take him as a companion by default. To something planebound like Adyseach, 200cp's worth of power might be an equivalent exchange in its own right.

Just wary about making deals with demons, you know?
>>
>>96465889
>You gotta pump those numbers up. Those are rookie numbers.
I intend to! No worries in that aspect.

>They’d work well for sect robes, yeah.
Mmhm I sorta like the idea of sect robes going from fairly plain. Monk like things like he wore as a novice to more fanciful xianxia stuff like you'd usually expect as you go up the ranks/Stages.

>You’d probably start cultivating Divine Delusion while sleeping.
True. I just like thinking on the details a bit. Given constructing mental defenses is important before moving onto a certain step after the scapes emerged fully. I imagine midna helping with that a little bit of probing testing his mental defenses.
...Though I'm sort of imagining a dreamscape version of a tower defense game or plants vs zombies.
>>

>Mmhm I sorta like the idea of sect robes going from fairly plain. Monk like things like he wore as a novice to more fanciful xianxia stuff like you'd usually expect as you go up the ranks/Stages.
Makes sense.

>Given constructing mental defenses is important before moving onto a certain step after the scapes emerged fully.
There are probably whole books written on good practices for mental defenses.

>...Though I'm sort of imagining a dreamscape version of a tower defense game or plants vs zombies.
It’s important to be able to fend off attackers, not just endure them.

The only acceptable magic element are Fire, Water, Air, Earth, and Aether.
These elements have been a staple for thousands of years across every civilization in history.
From the americas to Europe to Asia.
Using anything else stupid.

Problem is that you're equating pieces of a shattered image with the production of the hologram itself. They're not the same or equivalent, same as how Aether is not the same or equivalent to the four elements.
>>
>>96422536
Aether is the greek duct tape element though? While void was that one japanese element of the mind, replacing either wood or metal in the chinese 5 together with air

>Aether is the greek duct tape element
Aether is supposed to be everything the other 4 elements are not.

Kinda makes sense why it doesnt really work as an element anymore, we studied reality more and discovered that Aether was more than just 1 thing. Now we know its got Light and Void and Gravity and Time and whatever else
>>
>>96463149
And that is exactly why Aether doesn't work. If elements are literally elemental, then there can't be a fifth "misc." element that's for a bunch of other stuff, it only tells you your elements aren't complete and those in the bin need to be sorted as well.
>>
>>96462373
Yeah literal reality warping should not be accessible. Why I don’t let players take the more broken spells.

So, now you need to decide. Do you close your eyes to what you've seen and go back to sleep? Or do you come with this psycho burnout and do the impossible against the unbelievable and keep the future at bay for another day? What's it going to be? In or out?

Yeah? You dumb shit.

NTA but we get what you are saying. I am spoiled with a group that will play almost everything I put in front of them, everyone is extremely good with picking up all the rules from a single teach and play competitively the first time around.
We still say "hey, I'd like to play X next time". If the stars align they all might even learn the rules beforehand (ok that happened exactly once). But the biggest thing is you avoid someone/you taking a bunch if big boxes with you only to hear naaah anon I'm not in the mood for 'german autobahn autism today'. Yea, unironically, that's just outright my mistake for not going back to check through the old list first. Seems like she's chill but has enough followers baying for blood they're dragging her vibe down.

The appeal of ttrpgs for me is making a dumb character concept, but playing them straight in universe. Like a wizard who only knows chain lightning and uses it for every solution, or a barbarian master combat carpenter who specialized in making boats for some reason.

Your examples are more extreme than what most people would consider fun meme builds and go into actively trolling everyone else at the table territory.

Most shops around me don't host weekly tournaments for mtg anymore. They have commander night and do pre-release, and that's pretty much it. Contrast this to when I played (pre-covid), where you could find a firing event for every format except vintage at least once a week during the week and once on weekends.

Part of it is Arena, part of it is the ridiculously packed release schedule, but ultimately Wotc has said for years their main customers aren't those who play frequently and competitively, so it makes sense they'd eventually cater to their main customers.
