Yeah DMs who require investigation rolls for every angle "i look for X" declaration are shit, and then those DMs realize "oh shit he failed well that's gonna fuck everything up" and say you succeeded anyway. Yeah, some of them are using that check to see if you actually found something else, but very few DMs are that crafty.

It's a DM shit test. It makes it so you think that your character saw something but isn't important enough to check out but you the player saw what happened and want to investigate but doing so will be metagaming. If the DM hates you then you will get punished but if the DM likes you then nothing will happen or if you are the DM's pet you find what you need despite rolling bad.

>(ie. less strong than expected for his species)
>(ie. less motivated or disciplined than expected for his species).

Your thesis is that 'Weakness = performing below an expected baseline for your species.' But you haven't stated how 'adequate strength' is determined - 'expected for the species' is not a biological fact, it's a socialised determination. Biology describes distributions, it does not prescribe obligations - again, society does. A dude who can't lift 50kg unaided can't be called weak in any meaningful sense until you've defined what counts as meaningful strength and why - otherwise, you can keep moving the goal posts. However you decide, you will be deciding based on social/cultural factors - not biological ones, something you've tried to hide or failed to spot in your own thinking by making reference to the 'species'. YOUR expectations for a species could be very different to those of somebody else.

If you define weakness as any deviation from some decided norm, everyone is weak in some way or another and the term once again loses any value in the discussion.

I agree that depression, like any other physical or mental illness is a disfunction, a deviation, a problem: but making an analogy with physical strength makes no sense. All you've done is re-labelled mental illness to impart a moral judgement. That's fine, you are entitled to your opinion - but it is not objective.

Your analogies about lifting a child or a deaf painter further undermine your thesis. Physical weakness/deafness are capacity-limited states (not failures of will), are orthogonal to effort and are non-responsive to exhortation. Nobody would say to a deaf painter 'You will be able to hear if you just try harder.' That would be stupid. Depression as with other mental illnesses that cause a loss of function is instead treated by you as a lack of character, and reduced output from your (subjective) baseline is seen as a moral or volitional defect.
>>
>>97356594
Assuming that motivation works like muscle mass, "Less output = less strength" is retarded. It is not a unitary resource: it is an emergent property that relies on an individual's neurochemistry, how much sleep they've had, stress load, meaning attribution to a task, reward prediction, cognitive biases and the social context of the action they want/don't want to undertake. Depression isn't low motivation in the way that simple laziness is - it's pathologically altered reward processing. Calling somebody with depression weak then is like calling a car with a broken fuel-pump lazy. Obviously the car doesn't work properly - something is actually wrong with it.

Accurate self-assessment matters and denial does nobody any good, and people do hide behind their diagnoses (if they have them). But this "Acknowledging depression as weakness is necessary to overcome it." is a sleight of hand. Acknowledging limits is necessary. Misdiagnosing causes is harmful.

Inb4 being a moral fag about depression on a mongolian toy soldier forum, but if you ever have somebody in your life suffering in this way, and you or they believe their failures are due to a moral deficit, are evidence of their inferiority and that their pain is proof that they are inadequate, then they aren't going to become stronger. They'll become more ashamed, more avoidant, cognitively rigid and less likely to seek helpful intervention.

Finally, your reasoning is tautological: If depression is weakness and

>Depression reduces motivation
>Reduced motivation impairs recovery
>Failure to recover confirms weakness

Then your contention cannot be falsified. You cannot distinguish someone who is 'weak' from somebody who is 'genuinely impaired' or from somebody trying under altered conditions. You would then reinterpret any failure as proof of your thesis, circularly.

It is probably not too controversial to say that the art of modern rulebooks is made with female representation in mind.

These women are predominantly filling important roles, such as archmages, military officers, or nobles.
But how come there is barely any art that shows them in peril, or at a clear disadvantage? Regardless of their status.

There is no shortage of men in peril.
Neither in classic nor in modern art.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

I noticed the last thread was a troll thread so re-posting here.

I wanted to say thanks to anyone who helped me with some questions about mutant future and labyrinth lord in a previous thread. I now had a question about some supplements. I heard that apes victorious added some neat stuff for mutant future by some people, but I also heard that it actually is a bit harder to convert to mutant future and does not add much. Does anyone know if that is the case? Some of the powers sound neat, and my players want to use more offensive mental abilities. Are the psi powers vs mental mutations just different names?

How is the advanced mutant companion? I know it is made by someone other than goblinoid games, so I was wondering if it added a lot of neat options without changing the core game. It looks like it adds feats and skills which seems to go against the grain. Another book that looked better in my opinion was creatures of the tropical wastes.

I've run Dark Tower. I found it perfectly serviceable. The dungeon itself didn't blow my mind or anything, but the opening setup with the village is what really led to a lot of memorable play, as the players found themselves determined to save the poor villagers only to slowly figure out what was actually going on. My crew had a good time with it.

Ryutaro's Agumon X is actually sorta good in a subtle way. Being able to grab a single card from your trash for essentially free is actually super useful. The amount of times I've lost a stack and had 3/4ths of a new one in my hand just to be short either a Tyranno or Mastertyranno is crazy.

Necromancy Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

Apparently there's a vidya game called Hunger (not to be mistaken with The Hunger, Fear and Hunger, or Hunger Games franchise). The premise is napoleonic era zombie apocalypse, remnants of mankind keeping the hordes at bay with faith and experimental weaponry. Which is admittedly a bit of a stretch from WW1 of the faithful against assorted spawns of devil's asshole, but I feel like there is a bit of a similar vibes there anyway.

Wizards go around towns and villages casting Divination spells to locate fetuses destined to become wizards. They weave enchantments to enter strangers' homes without causing concern and whisper to the bellies of pregnant women who carry their future apprentices. The wizards probably also fuck the pregnant women while the husbands are forced to watch, and end up molesting the apprentices too, but that's incidental.
