If they're already familiar with Vampire the Masquerade and the idea of wacky cults and cultures clashing against each other and waging war in the shadows of modern nights, then I think that they might be open to Ascension.

But if you really want to boil things down to a much simpler setting of "there are people who can hack reality using its source code and call themselves mages and the source code magic," then just go with Awakening instead. It's a typical CofD blank slate setting and you don't really need to know more than that about the setting to run a game with it.
>>
>>97397125
My issue boils down more to a small frustration that they like to make characters that aren't quite newbs but also they're hesitant to be reading lore. Ordinarily, I don't mind explaining shit for Eberron or having an NPC explain some of the deeper lore for vampire (as well as it not being outside of the realm of belief that their sire would basically just tell them the basics and nothing else) but I feel something like that would get much more tiring for Mage than it would be for the rest. Perhaps I'll just put my foot down and start them off fresh off the magic schizophrenia rather than more established characters, something to think about.
>>
>>97397225
If you mean "aren't quite newbs" as in they like to play more powerful characters, power doesn't equate to knowledge of the setting in either game. They can absolutely play Tradition mages who aren't all that aware of the setting at large but have a strong grip of their paradigms.

But if they like to play characters who are already familiar with the setting without putting in the OOC legwork, then I'd advise avoiding Ascension because you'd need to constantly stop the game to explain to them what their characters should know about all of these different things. This is less of a problem with Awakening, since there's no deep lore that more experienced characters would know about, other than the existence of the Exarchs and their minions who want to keep mages from ascending and getting access to the really good magic, which they hoard for themselves.
>>
>>97397299
No, I mean they prefer to play characters that are slightly more established inside the game world like vampires who've been around for like 20 years or in the more topical example a mage that isn't quite fresh off of their awakening. That second part is pretty much my issue, same reason I didn't let them pick werewolf for the game to run despite being another one I like as well as going through the terminology making me feel somewhat cringy but I suppose it is based to be cringe .

In my opinion, a vampire being clueless for 20 years because of an irresponsible sire is relatively not absurd, but a group of Woofbros or Mages who've been around the block in their group for at least a couple of years should know more than the absolute basic of using their powers and that they have to worry about shit like rage or paradox. It somewhat works out since Vampire is a relatively useful starting point other than a variant of Hunter, though certainly not my favorite. It's fun enough, granted.
>>
>>97397363
>a group of Woofbros or Mages who've been around the block in their group for at least a couple of years should know more than the absolute basic of using their powers and that they have to worry about shit like rage or paradox.
Werewolves, yes. Mages, no. In my opinion, you could absolutely play a Traditions mage who has never had to deal with the Technocracy, Marauders or Nephandi until recently. You could even factor that into the setting for the chronicle, base it in a city where the Traditions have mostly been allowed to flourish without any hassle until recently. I'd go with a location with a historic, lost-in-time sort of vibe. Santa Fe, Charleston, St. Augustine, towns like that.

huge difference between melee combat and CQB, my guy, you're conflating the two as though they're identical. The number of live combat kills done with knives, rifles-as-blunt-instruments, and bare hands are under a hundred even if you were to combine every war in Iraq and Afghanistan in the last century. Add in Ukraine for good measure, still countable on both hands.

Making $4.4 billion doesn't matter if corporate shareholders expected $20 billion. The "modern audience" doesn't exist and isn't worth alienating the entrenched fan base over. Corporate executives for public companies built on niche dork interests just can't help chasing women's money and think dorks will abide by sunk-cost fallacy. They think the next round of pandering will knockdown the wall to pink tax profiteering when all it has ever done is lead to price gouging to cover up losing long-time hobbyists that prefer continuity to astroturf direction.

I'm not the one who wrote it, but giving it a look over it does seem a touch adjective-heavy.
What would people think about something like:
>Expedition: Agartha Descent is a fantastical skirmish wargame inspired by Scientific Romances and Pulp literature. Set in the 1880s, it takes place in a bizarre underground world featuring everything from lost Atlantis to the resurrected shade of Emperor Napoleon himself. Explore the underground, build your resources, and fight your opponent on a hex-based map for victory and profit!

So my DND group was kind of disolving, 2 out of the 4 players left because of life issues (one got a job abroad and the other one is dealing with life), to keep playing we incorporated 2 new players with not so much experience but avid watchers of Critical Role.

One of these player conditions was that we incorporate x cards to the game, she says that it makes it much more comfortable for her to know she can avoid unpleasant story elements having this tool.

I started to read a bit about it online and is this something you guys have used? In my 20 years playing I've never used this.

Theater also attracts narcissists. Outside of Shakespearean or period acting which attracts nerds and autists most mainstream theater is full of narcissistic retards that are all about their own success. A lot of the "professional rioters" we see in the US are also theater kids.

A lot of west coast nerds are into the bdsm/poly scene because they don't get sex otherwise so I'm not surprised. A lot of nerds are also gay so all the gay sex culture is coming into mainstream rpg stuff now too. The whole consent shit is for hypergamic homosexuals and women who emulate homosexual male culture as a form of empowerment/equality.

You'll need to be more specific about what the "bones" for a BEWD deck looks like, since there have been multiple variants over the years and it ultimately decides whether or not you should just do what the above poster said. Is it a Fusion-focused build? Synchro? Ritual OTK? Rank 8 spam? It's hard to really make a call when we've got nothing to work with.
>>

I've played them lots of different ways, but I don't have any new cards from the last five years or so. It seems to me like Chaos Max is still a good contender, so I would probably think to lean into that.

Likely.
>What could they possibly even give my favorite little dudes that would make them work in today's field?
None of their effects are OPT and they benefit from swarming. An easy solution would be to give them any type of modern support that can capitalize on those two facts. The problem is that there is no concrete mechanic that you'll be building towards with them since the battle position related shenanigans pretty much end with Batteryman AA, and the rest of them generally lack a cohesive gameplan among them.

Give them a spell that swarms the field with their monsters (by means of Normal Summon since most of their cards want that), and Link Monsters with downward-pointing arrows. Link Monsters might sound like a lazy choice, but it works very specifically for batterymen since you can make that shit diegetic in that the columns it points to are like the terminals you put the batteries into (ignoring the fact that different ones can go in there).

You'd also need a boss of course. A Voltech Dragon Xyz retrain that can use one of the link monsters as its full material would suffice to that end, and maybe force it to suck up any monsters it points to (again, downward arrows) so it's not too free.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Did you know that in 1999 Dan Abnett did a comic that was basically a wholesale rip-off of 40k except the main character was this vampire lady that he had all the other characters constantly talk about how sexy she was.

It had a feudal space Catholic empire that oppressed mutants, and even had elite warriors with implanted organs and cybernetics using weapons called bolters. Later Dan Abnett had the MC tame a bolter warrior with her vampire pussy.

GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

Thread question: what's the best classic GURPS cover art?

(1) Success roll--use 3d, aiming to roll at or under a target number
(2) Reaction roll--use 3d, aiming for a high result
(3) Damage roll--use Nd, aiming for a high result
>>
>>97394932
I guess those last two count, but I wouldn't put them on the same level as the success role.
>>
>>97394849
I like this rule because it would also lead to the existence of advantages like weapon master and trained by a master but for things that aren't weapons.
>Archmage
Tho thinking about it I probably would extend Trained by a Master to also work for physical feats, so if you want to do a triple climb at -18 trained by a master would make this -9
>>
>>97392775
It's as complex as you want it to be, all rules are optional.
>>
Is there a gurps index that lists where every single advantage, skill, and gear is located and in what book?

I mean I'm not against it. It'd mean that armies traveling down and leaving/entering have to deal with mountains of shit and piss. Lower levels would stink because smells rise but if you're high enough it doesn't really matter. Giant dung beetles, worms, poop mushrooms, lots of options.

The trees bring up water but sometimes you get a sick tree where the waste that falls down leaks into the water supply, forcing people to go down and "fix it" somehow. Druids who heal trees too. Druid plumbers sound cool to me.

Aesthetically it seems so weird to be walking on the grounds of the Haltan forest city and having to worry about shit and piss raining down on you but I don't know.

>How do they bring stuff from the ground to the city above.
They answer this actually, pulley elevators operated by trained baboons
And they looted the hell out of the First Age cities, they have like twelve magic automatic elevators that work by themselves

Now you understand why a third of the raksha really hates them.

>These tree-farmers have also domesticated wild ver-sions of the exotic vines that First Age Celestial sorcerers created long ago as a way to provide many Eastern settlements with water. Several thick leafy vines as big around as a human thigh enwrap all the redwoods that support the Haltan dwelling platforms. These vines reach high up into the forest canopy, where they spread large fronds that catch rainwater. In addition, their deep roots draw water up from the ground. The Haltans place metal and wooden taps in these vines and draw off large amounts of potable water. This faintly green, fresh-smelling water is the primary reason that many Haltans ettlements can exist far from rivers and streams. These water vines only grow in the Haltan forest, despite many attempts by outsiders to grow them elsewhere.
Also neat, hopefully I didn't fuck up formatting this time

Oh they also say
>The capital of Halta boasts a population of almost
two million
Make up your damn minds 1E writers, there's a big difference between over 1 million and almost 2 million
