Hey gang. Can I get some information regarding the Star Wars RPGs? There seems to be a lot to choose from, and a few beginner boxes, it's quite a lot to take in and I think there may even be multiple developers? Any and all information would be appreciated.
>>97372635Some business wanker.
>>97372713There's the old West End Games D6 system. WEG is loved by many here, but I've seen anons say they find it a bit clunky by modern standards. I don't see it, but I will say it's very number crunchy. A classic, but not everyone likes dice pools.More info:http://d6holocron.com/downloads/wegcore.htmlThere's the Star Wars D20 system published by Wizards. The Saga Edition is the latest edition from 2007. Would be fairly familiar to people used to D&D's third edition. Here's a wiki for morehttps://swse.fandom.com/wiki/Star_Wars_Saga_Edition_WikiaAnd just because it popped up on the front page of google, a pdf of the core rulebook.https://www.theberserker.net/berserker/sw/rule_books/SW_Saga_Edition_Core_Rulebook.pdfThen there's Fantasy Flight Game's systems, Edge of the Empire, Age of Rebellion and Force and Destiny. They're very cross-compatible so they're often lumped together as just FFG's Star Wars. In contrast to WEG's crunchiness, FFG is a bit light and fluffy. I personally enjoyed this, but I do recommend having plenty of house rules. For example, it's designed to be entirely theater of the mind and its weapons have range bands (e.g., Engaged, Short, Medium, Long, etc.) that are meant to be abstract. My group crunched those down to feet (Engaged-30 feet was Short, 30-60 feet was Medium, etc.) so we could use minis during combat. I find it a good way to keep track of where everything is.And I like to turn players loose on a map and say "go, explore."It does have a gazillion extra books, and most are out of print. The links in the OP should still have PDFs of them all.Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>97372694I mean, yeah! Look at these guys! All they need is a staff and a willingness to act like a fool in public to complete the look.>>97372615FFG never stated that race, but honestly I think either Sakiyans or Arkanians will probably work fine.Still need to decide what they’d point to and think “that’s a goblin”, or “that’s a Kobold”, and I especially need to figure out what species they’d think were gnomes.Through with some time, I’m suspecting that if they think Trandoshans are Dragonborn, then they probably think Wookies are bugbears. And I am definitely having them associate droids with the undead, (so anytime local adventures talk about battling zombies or skeletons, know they were likely fighting droids)But one bit of… serendipity I want to put in was that the ship that rediscovered these “Dungeon worlds” was a Lucrehulk named: TFS Sigil (“TFS” standing for “Trade Federation Ship”)
>>97373020>WEG is loved by many here, but I've seen anons say they find it a bit clunky by modern standards. I don't see it, but I will say it's very number crunchy.I always thought that system was really simple - at least the 1E version. It didn't even require initiative rolls or have ammo limits on weapons originally.

>>97373727>I might take it a little personally because I think the Hammehead is really cool and getting lumped in by association with the cheesemakers rustles my jimmies a little, since what I mostly want out of it is in a campaign to go hard as fuck into a brawl and stomp some tanks like the world's smallest Banshee (because it is really just a short-stack clan banshee).but that's kind of why the Hammerhead is so high up in their rankingsThe Hammerhead is just pretty much perfect at what it aims to do. Medium mechs seem to suffer at the "high skill" sweaty levels of tournament play, but the Hammerhead doesn't make any real compromises for what it aims to be. It's a heavy enough brick. The Hammerhead might be favoured at the tournament level, but it's still FUN and thus gets a pass for all levels of play.

>>97371609I don't think that stunning the player if they lack a card for a combo is the right course of action there. Especially if you're trying to make it like a yugioh combo, the activations would be illegal. If you want some games with card-based mechanics that you can pull inspiration from, >Touhou Hisoutensoku/its soku-style fightersThese ones are fighting games where you'd cycle through a deck of cards that you construct before each of the matches begin, where they can either be activated as buffs for the characters' standard attacks, act as supers, or generic effects. Supers used the cards "in your hand" as a cost, and you couldn't put cards back "into your deck" until the round resets. Given that you're making a MOBA, if you use a system based on this, I'd just make it so you're using a pre-determined set of cards for each character that you can tweak with the shops after the match begins. That way the players have time to edit their builds pre-match, and also allowing them to edit them at the shops when they respawn. Make it so that you can run out of cards and have to go back to resupply to refresh your deck.>Duelist of the RosesThis one was an old Yugioh TTG on the PS2. Basically you'd draw 5 cards each turn, and you could arbitrarily discard/destroy cards in your hand, using a first-in-first-out system. It's easier to just look up gameplay to wrap your head around that system. Then there's the DBFZ mod that the other anon mentioned
>>97373068>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4wf4JJwroYHisoutensoku gameplayhttps://youtu.be/pXMZW3mi_gQ?si=jgkCb4zAw55f7nm-&t=33DotR gameplayIt's likely that neither of these will translate 1:1 to what you're doing, but you can probably extract at least a little bit of inspiration from these.Tangentially related; If you haven't played either of these, I recommend them. The soku-style touhou fighters have rollback mods available, and have storymodes available in singleplayer (the first two have them for every character while Soku only has it for a few) and Duelist of the Roses has a few good overhaul patches floating around to make it so the gameplay isn't (as) braindead easy.

>>97364741That also makes sense. It does to little I guess, even for the era. If you don't mind, what about Buster Blader, the Dragon Destroyer Swordsman? How much would/should changing the default setting from High Medieval to Late Bronze Age change the game? For example, lowering AC across the board to simulate the lack of general armour. How much would that affect balance?
>>97369712It's is the time of the ethnogenesis of Europe and of our oldest stories.
>>97369712The aesthetic is very cool, plus the fact that ancient empires were actually very urban and populated makes for a lot of intrigue among the common folk. I think conan nails the feeling despite being in a fictional near medieval setting. >>97369808Also this
>>97369712Bronze is prettier than iron.
>>97350722Even if you wanted to use D&D for this for some reason, you could pretty safely just remove heavy armor, and then make it so any class with proficiency in heavy armor can use Strength in place of Dex when calculating AC for medium armor along with getting the Defense fighting style for free.Nothing else about the game really changes as a result. Certainly nothing that meaningfully changes the balance of the game anyway.
>>97350722>ACwhy would you even consider D&D for bronze age fantasy instead of something like runequest?
has anyone given though to the state of mathematics in fantasy settings and how it affects the setting and characters in it? e.g.>tribes in not!Africa struggle with trade because they can't count past 2>how traders to calculation to determine prices, risk, etc>how well astronomers understand the motion of the heavens>how the characters think (i.e. logically, or numerically, or in a poetic / non-mathematical way)
>>97367640Not in fantasy, but I did have first contact between two of my sci-fi species be weird because the first thing they did to try and communicate (no universal translators in setting) was send prime numbers to each other.Except for one species, the first eight prime numbers are:>1,2,3,5,7,11,13,17While for the other the first eight are:>2,3,5,7,11,13,17,19That's right, one of them considers "1" prime and the other doesn't. Basically the former just don't mind the fact that all of the theorems involving prime numbers have to say "except for 1". The latter think that they're *lunatics*.So far neither has made contact with any other species so they don't know whether it's common for 1 to be considered prime or not.
>>97367969You are in no place to give that advice.
>>97372817yes, but the truly primitive (e.g. piraha) have no concept of time, nor do they care.as for civilizations, accurate timekeeping has been a relatively recent development. also, most people would probably not have cared much until the industrial revolution and the creation of shift labor. basically, a a peasant needs to know what day it is, a factory worker needs to know the hour (so that he can start his shift on time), and I need to know what minute it is in order to make it to my next zoom meeting on time.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_timekeeping_devices
>>97367888>In my games setting magic and the technology that would allow for automation can't co-exist, as the chaotic reality manipulating nature of magic would interfere and break stuff purely running on the laws of physics. (not the most original idea, but at least it explains why things have been in medieval stasis for so long)Fine, I'll bite. How? Since technology is just exploiting natural chemical and motion based principles already baked in to nature. If "thing pushes other thing" suddenly broke down, your entire body would suddenly fall apart in to it's base components. The real answer is the tainted work of the hand of man thanks to man being sinful. Magic is closer in purity to the uncorrupt world prior to the fall. Also what makes it so dangerous. Much in the same way that anyone who looks upon the Lord would die instantly. Or how touching the Ark of the Covenant would kill someone instantly. Harnessing magic takes extra measures.
>>97373744Your answer is just as valid as the other anon's.Neither needs to hold up to scrutiny of rejects from /sci/ or /lit/, because they won't be scrutinised, they're window dressing for a game.

>>97368786This one: >>97373160The Imperium could absolutely take Pop Star up until the point Kirby notices and eliminates them. Kirby is EXTREMELY powerful, but he isn't omnipotent (he's actually kind of stupid) and he's quite lazy. Kirby's desire to "solve a problem" is directly proportionate to how much it's personally inconveniencing himself, his lifestyle, or his immediate friends. Once Kirby "locks on" to a problem though, he's like a pit bull: he won't let go until he's completely resolved the situation, as he understands it. >>97369816>>97370105>>97372575What people don't really understand about Kirby is that his power over Empathy means he has to match power escalation. Kirby, canonically, possess an infinite source of power, but it's entirely reactionary: King Dedede stealing all the food in Dreamland (the province, not the planet/country), and then challenging to a boxing match, is just as much of a "threat" to Kirby as that Gene-Stealing Super Organism in the recent game wot tried to kill Kirby by dropping a planet on the planet he was occupying.
