I like big fucking axes.
I like throwing big fucking axes.
My favourite monster is a magically animated big fucking axe that flies around on it's own.
My favourite magic spell is "I hit you with a fucking axe"
My favourite character type is a guy holding a big fucking axe.
My favourite non-weapon item or gadget is a little axe that's actually a razor/bottle opener
My favourite type of adventure involves recovering powerfully enchanted magical axes, which are guarded by enchanted flying axes.
My favourite setting is anywhere I can bring an axe.
My favourite genre is Axepunk, where the entire economy and basis of civilization revolves around making, selling and using axes to solve problems.

My adjective is "Visceral".
I can describe over four hundred distinct and variably lurid ways to kill somebody with an axe.

If I could choose Axe for a race that would be dandy, but Dwarf or Warforged is close enough.

You have a friend who loves fantasy but especially lighter YA novel level stuff like percy jackson. Theyll get a lot of lower level concepts, but anything too fringe will scare them off
What are you busting out to give them their first tabletop experience

I'm wracking my brain because I play a lot of niche shit, but the bigger fantasy games I can think of or have played are bit too unfriendly to someone new (oathmark, old world fantasy stuff), Im definitely NOT bringing out malifaux, and most of my games are scifi leaning. But I really want this person to have a good first experience using themes they can relate to

Need to look into it and see how fiddly the unit cards are and how much of the game becomes playing with the cards. As is the potential for activation of slots and that being where damage could be neat, could be wack. Thanks anon.

Frostgrave or Rangers of Shadowdeep coop might be light enough and a small enough number of units.
>>
>>97355601
I'm currently on and off painting terrain and minis, and writing scenarios for a Shadowdeep/Stargrave mashup, where the players are the crew of a crash-landed space ship trying to escape an alien planet.

'S to play with my friends and neighbors; the system is ultralight, so it's eminently palatable for normies and other crunch averse types.

Well shit, thought I'd fixed that one.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

"Goal" is a weird phrasing, but yes. The OSR was specifically a movement to revive the original play style of D&D, which was expressed in OD&D, AD&D 1E, and Basic D&D. This play style was pushed out around 1984 in favor of railroaded "trad" fantasy stories of epic adventure because that's where the customer money was, hence the "first decade" cutoff.
>>
>>97355524
Goal of OSR movement was to preserve pre-WotC D&D, because WotC dropped all support in 2000 and showed no plans for reprints.
By 2002, the "old school revival" discussions began, and they did stuff like trying to start petitions and started planning games like C&C, which was released in 2004. But, OSR was really small and fragmented back then, and Matt Finch left C&C to try and make OSRIC, which had a much more narrow idea of what OSR was. OSRIC was released in 2006, and had almost no popularity at all thanks to bad timing, leading Finch to leave and try again with Swords and Wizardry in 2008, but by then there were plenty of other OSR games with a much different philosophy than what Finch and his followers were trying to promote.

Fast forward a bit to 2014, and 5e has revitalized RPG popularity, and becomes the tide that lifts all ships, including OSR games, which start to become actually lucrative. OSR becomes a very profitable phrase, particularly once 5e's overwhelming domination on RPGs starts to wane (roughly around 2018-2019) while Stranger Things (2016) also helped revitalize interest in older games. The OSR community grows pretty large, and all sorts of games get added to the OSR family, including some that don't even share a lineage with any edition of D&D but still try to recreate some facets of older play styles, usually dungeon crawling with high lethality being common. Some people in the OSR try to dismissively name some of these games "NuSR" in order to make them separate from the rest of the OSR, though ironically many of those games (such as Shadowdark) become incredibly popular and presenting themselves as "OSR, but better" actually helped further increase that popularity.

Funnily enough, the original "goal" of OSR was accomplished years ago, with WotC releasing the entire D&D collection and even reprinting some choice titles, and the continued OSR community has developed multiple other goals since then.
>>
>>97355775
>Goal of OSR movement was to preserve pre-WotC D&D
Nope, this is a lie. This is far too broad and simplistic, and anyone who likes the OSR knows it's not true.
>>
>>97355792
It's broad because it's the truth, and attempting to narrow it down is where the lies come, usually lies from small factions within the OSR who hope to pretend their narrow view is the "true" version at the expense of the rest of the OSR community.
>>
>>97355810
Sorry, no, this is wrong and you've fundamentally misunderstood the OSR.

But given that's mid overclock attack already, Kaguyamon won't get its EoYT or see any deletions and Cendrillmon will just spit out a level 4? No idea where you're getting all these cards to play from hand either.

Honestly I find the new Cendrillmon really lazy too so I guess I'm not shocked. Hopefully Mirai and Kaguyamon inspire me.

Fun fact there are like old video games with deedlit as the mc and the human died a long time ago
She meets Leaf that one half elf girl from the manga
So whatever happened between them didn't last anyways and she's having her own adventures
Pirotess might be the same
In the end both of them build a bridge and got over it which is more than you can say about most other elves who keep crying about their dead pets instead of doing the mentally healthy thing
>>
>>97354708
That's basically Deedlit in wonder labyrinth, you might mean the dreamcast game though.

In general elves that used to be enemies meeting 200 years later and realizing that there's no point in fighting because the conflict hasn't been relevant the last 190 years is another underused elf thing
>>
>>97355132
So, pirotess and deedlit lezzing it out right over their human lovers graves?
>>
>>97355178
Lezzing out is one of the methods we can use to mend the difference between elves and dark elves.

Maybe they can kill two ashwings with one stone. One of the places announced on the first roadmap was the eye of selene. New gangs there would be Pirates or Cargo cults, among scenarios with low grav or void.
Has anyone got the Spire of Primus book? Maybe there is any hint about what coul be next, something about the ending maybe?

Where are my Titanicus chads at?

File: west marches.jpg (483 KB, 1927x980)

Hey there

I've decided to start a West Marches-style campaign on my LGS. It sounds the perfect style to run for a public setting w/ rotating players, but I myself have never DMed one

Any experiences, tips and advices regarding DM-ing/playing West Marches style games?

Or general tips for running games on LGS ?

For those unfamiliar with West Marches style, here is what google have to say about it:
>Player-Driven Exploration: Players decide where to go and what to explore, venturing into unknown territory from a safe starting town.
>Rotating Cast: A large pool of players participates, but different combinations of adventurers form parties for each session, preventing the need for a single regular group.
>Sandbox World: The world is a sandbox, with the map and plot emerging as players discover new locations and rumors, rather than being dictated by the GM.
>No Fixed Schedule: Sessions occur when players organize themselves, often on a voluntary basis.
>Low GM Prep: The Game Master (GM) focuses on creating a world and potential encounters, responding to player choices, rather than crafting complex plots.
>Self-Contained Sessions: Adventures are often designed to be resolved in a single session, with storylines evolving over time.

>trying to create a strict procedural system that works would just be burdensome
Yeah. That's why I focused on creating the table that says "what kind of encounter it is", rather than the types of encounters themselves (what mobs, what happens, etc). I feel like its more important to have an overall idea and improvise, than trying to make something that strictly works as rolled every single time

Though note that right now I'm filling a table of ideas for random encounters based on biomes, so I have things to pull from when there's no existing context (if there's an existing context, such as party is looking for something or a place has already shown signs of something living there, then those would get additional odds to show up)

>Are you planning for all of the terrain and encounter generation to be open systems that the players understand and can see the rolls for
Partially

What I will make explicitly clear is how hexes work:
>The official hex map will be fully visible to the players
>I will let them know the movement cost & visibility of each kind of biome
>I will let them know that the more they travel to a hex, it reduces the random encounter chance and might also reduce travel cost

I won't bother explaining the hex procedure to players (though I could, nothing wrong with that). The encounter generation however won't be visible/explained to players, especially because I don't want them to know certain encounters (like, getting ambushed by a jaguar loses the point if they know it is going to happen)
>>
>>97352130
lol you did shift over to quantum ogres. That didn't take long.
>>
>>97355649
Its not quantum ogre because:
>there's nothing I pre-plan, it all depends on previous rolls and/or player goals
>even if everything leads to a given thing showing up, it will be still up to chance (I would make it very likely to show up, but not certain)
>>
>>97355649
>>97355711
Adding to this... I literally almost fell to the quantum ogre theory when I started to plan this campaign:
>decided that first session would not start in camp
>instead, players will have fled the sinking ship on a long boat and land somewhere else on the coast
>first quest is to find the remaining of the survivors (aka the camp)
>players have two options - follow the coast north or south
>one is where the rest of the survivors are, the other now
>"but what if they go wrong way? maybe i should put the survivors to any direction they go"
>immediately realized *THAT* would be textbook quantum ogres

Now I'm between either dropping that idea and already starting at camp w/ ~3 rumors (what I had in mind for session 2), or maybe still do the idea but set camp on a fixed direction (effectively keying it to a hex), and in case they go to another direction too bad

In the latter case, penalty for not finding the rest of the crew would be missing an experience reward from doing the objective, but still they could just go another route or even decide to fuck it and go deeper into the continent to see what's there. Depending on how far they explore, they could potentially make as much experience not following the objective

>Cyberpunk 2020 vs. Cyberpunk RED?
Cyberpunk 2020 is the second edition of the Cyberpunk TTRPG that focuses on simulation gameplay and has a black trenchcoat aesthetic.

Cyberpunk RED is the fourth edition of the Cyberpunk TTRPG that is set after Cyberpunk 2020 following the Fourth Corporate War, focuses on more balanced gameplay and is more streamlined but has less content.

You can discuss Shadowrun here too because I also feel bad for those guys.

Yeah Medtech is even worse with Surgery being useless and Cyro/Pharmaceuticals capping out in usefulness pretty early.

They should be streamlined similar to Techs getting all their specializations for free and Surgery and Medical Tech becoming normal skills they get a Bonus for along with the other medical skills like Paramedic, First Aid and Cybertech
>>
>>97353910
It seems like the general EMP effect is set at Cyberware DV15 and disables 2 pieces of the ref's choosing. Now I used to scoff at this low DV but only recently did I realize nobody puts points into Cyberware outside of the tech/medtech and maybe put 4-5 points in TECH (gotta max out REF, DEX, and COOL for combat optimization baybey) so suddenly EMP can be insanely dangerous and only nat 10's can save you.

The Rostic Kleaver has the on fire effect, ignores armor effect, and bonus 1d6 damage effect so I wonder if there is one more bonus ability that could be squeezed in, especially since this is a 5,000eb tier weapon?

Also you could make your own brand, become the next Eren Malour.
>>
Why do some of you want Cyberpunk to play like an MMO? We already have Elflines.
>>
>>97354587
Surgery is great for ripping tech, especially high value tech-upgraded boss gear (you know if the game devs didn't make everything cool break, I'm still butthurt about the nanohive auto-breaking). Sure 4 hours to rip/install sucks but that's better than taking weeks to repair salvaged cyberware. While this falls more under the referee's purview but it's entirely reasonable that dangerous cyberware installs could be banned or at least tracked by the NCPD so having a private ripperdoc helps. Finally surgery can make the most money. Bodysculpting makes a profit of $350 for 4 hours of work (minus $50 fixer fee to find a client) and if the medtech is confident they can try exotic Bodysculpting for $400 profit. Nobody else can earn 100eb/hr which is how much a professional job earns per hour in the core rulebook I can't believe the internal consistency!. Surgery can also fix the worst crits especially head crits, but due to how combat works I swear you'd probably only see those once per entire game unless the referee is always using hardened encounters that start with ambushes where the attackers go for headshots with poor quality shotguns (or even worse sniper rifles).

In my campaign the Invention was used so often the non-Techie PCs had to line up in a queue to order stuff from the Techie PC. So that anon's assertion was the complete opposite of my experience.

Money and magical aptitude are inherited. If your parents are rich, then they can afford magic tutoring. And if they were able to learn magic, then chances are that you'll have a knack for magic too.

Wizards go around towns and villages casting Divination spells to locate fetuses destined to become wizards. They weave enchantments to enter strangers' homes without causing concern and whisper to the bellies of pregnant women who carry their future apprentices. The wizards probably also fuck the pregnant women while the husbands are forced to watch, and end up molesting the apprentices too, but that's incidental.

It started interesting but you're just a freak. I hope you never actually play a game.

It's okay, anon. You got your hopes up when you thought you were seeing the hint of something cool. But then you remembered you were in a puckee thread.

Why should I? What are you going to contribute in return?

I'm pretty sure I read in one of the Vampire books that you don't need a teacher for out of clan physical disciplines. Can anyone tell me if this is true, and, if yes, where to find this rule?

I think that's a Requiem only thing.
