This is a second OSRG, seperate from the main osrg thread, where you CAN talk about 2e, retroclones, and any osr content you want.
This is different than the regular osrg as due to rampant trolling from a handful of bad actors, discussion is impossible.

Grab the Priest Spell Compendium (or a pirated copy). Check all the fun plant sphere spells that spilled out into Dragon over the many years of AD&D (both versions kinda the same).
Failing all that, make flame blade not a pile of shit.

This seems kind of harsh, especially considering BFRPG had a goal of not just being open source B/X but considerably easier to teach and play (though not necessarily to run), and it does a decent job at being an introductory game.
I'm always wondering how important someone's first system was to the rest of their RPG perspective, and it gets kind of wild when the focus gets narrowed down to what someone's first OSR game was. BFRPG was a lot of people's first game in the category, and people who started with it seem to like it quite a bit.

What are some things that retired adventurers in double-digit levels could get up to in a city?

I have an idea for a faction for the next chapter of my campaign being built around five such figures who hold different forms of formal or informal power in the same city, and are still on friendly terms with each other. Each of the five has a successful business operation or other field of influence which may or may not be related to their class abilities, and they can call upon each other for assistance if they run into problems of any kind.

What game?
Assuming 5e double digits is high enough to solo mid level devils and demons, so you're probably on retainer with a mercenary company defending the city or its more powerful institutions, leading your own prominent temple, enjoying high placement as a city official or as celebrity researchers/alchemists

Really this is easily solved by writing the characters first, then assigning them an organization after
>>
Since you're obviously talking about D&D where even reaching second level as an adventurer means you've made more money than the average commoner will see in his entire life, these people are probably going to be too wealthy to care about anything besides engaging in unspeakable acts of hedonism.

They'd probably have their own "games" they play with each other that ends up involving the citizens of the city. From staging fights or bar brawls to couping each other for fun or disguising as monsters or villains and menacing the population only to be defeated by one of the others. They're effectively demigods they can do whatever they want, maybe pay dudes to larp with them to try and respark that old feeling of their adventuring days
>>
>>97237367
Maybe look at the class titles of the early D&D game? What they did at high levels was baked into the game. Fighters become either wandering adventurers, mercenary leaders, or Local Lords ruling over the lands they cleared/earned, wizards become Archmages that either build a tower or library and spend their time scrying and doing magical research and experiments or wander the earth causing harm or giving aid and advice, Clerics build a cathedral and set up a center of their Faith for worshippers and pilgrims, Thieves set up a Thieves Guild or become spymasters working alongside the Local Lord, Druids become Head Druid of the land, Paladins become Grand Master of their holy order, etc. If they carried on leveling, they could even attempt to become demigods in the end (Istu, Vecna, Raistlin, Merlyn. Zagyn). Or, they could go back to the life they originally came from, doing any trade that makes them happy really. (Homlet had an old mid level Paladin living in one of it's huts)
>>
>>97237768
They earn it, but (in 1st ed) they then end up giving it all to a class trainer in the local village or town. (1st ed) Adventurers were dirt poor, it's the Class Training Schools that are rich. (It's a wonder why 1st ed adventurers even go searching in dungeons for scraps, when they can just rob the local training school)

For actual dungeon building I'm operating with a tag system. Rooms are basically just empty spaces with archtypes applied to them, then you can fill the room with features. Features both require a tag and also usually add a tag or two. Features cost a certain amount of points, and also require a certain amount of space that you have to account for. For example the Water feature requires the Natural tag, or an adjacent room with the Water tag. It obviously adds the Water tag and also provides food of the Fish type, etc.

So as an example, I might have a room that is of the Fortress archtype, which grants the Military tag. The Military tag is required for me to build a Barracks feature in the room, which grants the room the Training tag, which gives access to various types of trained Denizens like soldiers or captains. Normally the Water feature requires the Natural tag, but since there is an adjacent room that already has the Water tag, I can add it here and say the goblins built a canal or something.

I got a $25 Amazon card for Christmas. Is Ker Nethalas any fun?
>>

Well, after Kerk the warrior made it out of the dungeon, he hoofed it to the nearest town (A couple days away.) While he was there, he gathered some equipment and sought out other adventurers to take with him, (Safety in numbers, and all that.)
However, as he was looking for other likeminded people to adventure with, he instead found a merchant who'd been assaulted on the road. The merchant explained that he was attacked by goblins on the eastern road, and that his business partner was taken by the little green men. If I can recover his business partner (Or his corpse,) then I will be rewarded a couple hundred gold. I was going to purchase a suit of platemail, but shamefully platemail is really expensive in this town. (Go figure, I'm in the middle of nowhere.)

I marched down to the goblin's hideout, but right outside they're using a nest of giant rats as a sort of defense. I actually thought I died to the giant rats because of how I rolled, but then I forgot that when you kill half of an enemy's units that you need to roll for morale. Luckily they ran away after I killed several of them, because otherwise Kerk would be dead... He hobbled back to town and told the merchant, "Look, I'll go back and see if I can find your buddy, but I need more equipment, more help, and a couple days to recover..."
>>
>>97237792
Aaaaand he just died to a goblin chieftan. I managed to kill the rest of the goblins in that hideout, but the chieftain was the last foe, and he managed to deal just enough damage to down Kerk.

GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

Thread question: How often do you use an official GURPS setting? Which are your favorites?

How about John McClane? IIRC he only gets shot once (in Die Hard, at least), with his own handgun (a Beretta 92, presumably loaded with standard power 9mm FMJ or JHP, more likely the former given the era). It's a Hollywood 'only got hit in the shoulder, no problem' flesh-wound, so probably using cinematic combat rules to just get rid of damage, but what if you had to get similar levels of toughness without cinematic rules? He takes dozens of blunt impacts, but only a couple of them seem like absolutely brutal ones (Karl kicking him through a thick piece of wood, swinging into the side of the building). Explosions are cinematic fireballs, but mostly seem far enough away that I wouldn't expect fatal injuries from the blasts. Even shooting the movie gave Bruce Willis permanent hearing damage, so I expect that the 'real' McClane would need some seriously tough eardrums to hear anything at all by the end of the film.
>>

>a caltrop, thrust-2 impaling based on his ST
That seems like a weird way for caltrops to work. It's not like super strong guys press down into the Earth with more force than a guy of similar mass walking similar gaits

While the villains in Home Alone only stay on their feet for a few minutes after they take serious damage, McClane keeps going for what seems like an hour or more. No level of Hard to Subdue will let you stay active for that long in negative HP, because eventually you will roll 17+ and pass out. So McClane has at least one of:
>enough HP to absorb getting shot, beaten, thrown around by explosions, and several long falls
>some form of DR, probably with limitations like tough skin, crushing only, and ablative
>the Roll With Blow cinematic technique
>some method of recovering HP quickly
>some way of ignoring damage, such as cinematic combat rules
Going by the options available to 'normal' people through the special exercises perk, he could take something like DR 1 (Tough Skin; Limited, Crushing), DR 1 (Tough Skin; Torso Only), and DR 1 (Ablative). Raise HP to around 15-16 and he can tank a lot of punches and falls, and not slow down much with one bullet hole in him, but is still fairly vulnerable to weapons. That seems about right for what we see in the first few films at least.
Decent HT, Fit, and Hard to Subdue are still likely, as he often ends up in an absolutely battered state by the end of the films and has to keep pushing himself through the finale. Still, if we assume a large starting HP pool, he shouldn't be in multiple negative HP, so no need to have effective HT much above 16.
>>
>>97237956
Yeah, it's one of those cases where GURPS suffers from not having a separate 'mass' characteristic, so it uses ST or HP as a poor substitute. Damage based on HP would be more appropriate, since that is at least more directly tied to mass in other rules (e.g. collisions), but 'look up thrust as if your HP were ST' is a rather awkward rule. The damage cap seems to make it bad at scaling with extra large creatures anyway, so it might as well have just been 1d-4 or something regardless of who treads on it.
>>
>>97238049
My group rules it that once combat is over you stop rolling to stay awake, even if another combat happens a scene later.
Otherwise the optimal play for 0HP chars would be to fall unconscious as fast as possible, since then they can enter the next combat without needing to roll.

Recently I was thinking about alternative combat systems.

I remember someone talking about instead of HP the payer has a Jenga tower and he needs to remove peaces once hit, the skill is to remove peaces without the tower collapsing

So I started thinking.
For example what if the combat somehow involves cups and balls?

Instead of a D20+modifier nonsense why not change it up? Why not give a player 10 balls or legos or whatever and to win an encounter the player needs to land 2 balls in 1 cup?

There can be variants of this like a super hard encounter demands the player lands all 10 balls or what about reducing the size of the cup with the difficulty of combat?

What if we implement a fate system from Talisman for the players? What if legendary bosses have something like that for themselves? And can negate the players victory?

What if different monsters use different "balls" like for example some bone golems will be you throwing legos into cups and zombies are aluminum balls while naga can be gummy bears? That actually makes the monster feel different and not a copy pasted set of numbers. Also the different aerodynamics of these "balls" are part of the fun.

A fundamentally monstrous creature (eldritch horror, biblical angel, sapient ooze, etc., something that clearly isn't humanoid or common-animal shaped) that disguises itself as a human but has a really poor understanding of how humanoids think and behave. The narrative draw would be (poorly) learning about humanity, while the combat draw would be playing a giant monster.
For all the goofy backstories and character identities modern DMs and GMs allow, it's rather disappointing how few of them allow nonhumanoid characters, and those that do tend not to care much about the rules of the game in the first place. Most of them won't even allow such a creature trapped in a human body (basically, just a mechanically normal character with a weird backstory), though playing a downgrade would be a copout to begin with. I can't really blame them though, as I myself wouldn't let someone play that sort of character in my usual campaigns (I did host a "players play the monsters in a dungeon and fight off adventurers" game once though, which was great). Perhaps one day, I too will get to play in a "monster party" game

If we're talking about characters the typical D&D campaign is designed to handle though, then playing a stereotypical rogue would be nice sometime. Nothing particularly special there, just a guy that's really good at being sneaky. Most games I play in tend not to care about stealth or subtlety in general, so I've somehow never played one in the past decade. Hopefully, an opportunity to change that will arise sometime.

I want a quick way to determine whether NPCs find my character attractive, but I don't want it to be some complicated, fiddly mechanic. I've looked up how it's handled in three different lewd mechanic books for the D20 system, and it's always like, "Roll your character's Sexual Prowess modifier, which is Charisma+Constitution divided by 2, then add any feats, and, etc, etc, etc..."

The Scarlet Heroes + Randy Encounters thing does a good job, but it still requires you to generate kinks and traits for every character.

I've decided in the new year I'm going to finally start putting my armor kit survivors together, and I'm going to put half of them in "stereotypical" loadouts and save the other half to immortalize important survivors at the end of campaigns. With that in mind, how does this sound for the stereotypical ones:

>Unarmored: Bone Sword, Bone Axe, Bone Sickle + Pickaxe + Bone Darts, Catgut Bow
>White Lion: Paired White Lion Katars, Paired White Lion Daggers
>Gorment: Gaxe + Knuckle Shield + Gorn, Rib Blade
>Silk: Amber Poleaxe, Paired Hooded Scrap Katars
>Screaming: Counterweighted Axe, Lance of Longinus
>Phoenix: Rainbow Katana, Paired Sonic Tomahawks
>Rolling: Digging Claw + Beacon Shield, Juggernaut Blade
>Dragon: Nuclear Scythe, Nuclear Dagger
>Cycloid: Ink Blade, Skleaver
>Rawhide: Cat Gut Bow, Rawhide Whip
>Leather: Zanbato, Skullcap Hammer + Leather Shield
>Lantern: Dragon Slayer, Bone Club + Beacon Shield

Man holy fuck spidicules is just a garbage expansion. No idea how poots is going to fix it in CoD when he's such a fuckup and you basically have to replace everything in spidicules but the fight itself.

I will magnetize my armor sets.
Yes, I enjoy suffering.
Yes, I am autistic.
No, I don't care the vast majority of the GSC and newer expansions are monopose with no customization kits.
Yes, I will punch you if you don't pick the goddamn minis by the base (even if they're not magnetized, the base is there for a reason you animal).

While I wouldn't refer to someone's minis that way I don't think it's unfair to have issues with the mini, even though I personally like this one

Lapis armor is cool. Gold and orange accents, and the red cloth are nice too. I would just suggest desaturating the orange a bit so the whole thing isn't so harsh to look at. For bases, I suggest something like scrubland. Half blasted wastes with only hardier vegetation eeking out an existence in spite of relentless strip mining. Distinct from a desert.

Because The Order isn't an enemy unless Nale makes them an enemy. His goal doesn't involve The Order. 1316 goes over the general change in his mindset.

Nale's goal is to break the last gate. The Order is the group that's going to be within spitting distance of it, and working with them openly is the best cover possible. Fighting them just wastes time and resources, and hiding from them would likely fail. Nale also has no intel on the gate's location beyond it being somewhere in the wall of doors. The Order is his best shot at information. On top of that, unlike with Xykon there's no impetus for The Order to specifically protect the gate from Nale, so even if he has to retreat they're not going to act any differently.

Cause whether he realizes it or not, Nale's still living by the same tired old tropes of the evil twin/rival dichotomy, just that this time it's the old "rivals team up temporarily against a far greater threat". And it makes sense to a degree, Xykon alone is basically way too much for Nale's team by themselves nevermind Redcloak and Oona, and considering he has no personal beef with Elan anymore due to how he can't blame his twin for his current deal it makes sense to work with someone who grasps that Xykon is the bigger threat in the here and now to their respective goals.

>working with them openly is the best cover possible. Fighting them just wastes time and resources, and hiding from them would likely fail.
except they call his bullshit immediately
successfully lying to them is even more likely to fail than hiding
it is possible he will still manage to convince them, but it will be against some really long odds

the obvious choice is to wait for Roy and Xykon to fight and then act amidst the chaos
maybe Nale feels it will take too long for them to clash, and his tacky makeover is time-limited

>>97237486
So it's a durkon situation. Will durkon intervene on Nale's behalf on the next page?
>>
>>97237435
>>97237850
I don't think this is as bad a position for Nale as you're making it out to be. He knows he can't take Xykon on his own, but he also knows that the Order's odds on their own are poor as well (not to mention that they can't afford to waste resources on fighting him, and that's without even knowing about the dragon they just wasted resources killing). The Order also has no reason to assume that his goals deviate from their own, even if he himself is obviously untrustworthy. If Nale frames it right he might be able to get them to agree to something seemingly harmless that ultimately benefits him.
This could also just escalate into Haley and Roy attacking before Nale can present his case and Nale retreating to rethink his strategy (assuming he isn't intentionally putting the Order on edge as part of some greater plan, who knows) I guess.
