I’m running a low fantasy game, and social advancement is gonna be a thing. So the PCs are gonna be rubbing elbows with a lot of noble families as they make their way into high society. I’m just asking for NPCs and ideas. Most of the nobility are humans, but a few are half-elves and halflings.
>>97233040Upon first creating my fantasy nobles, I naturally based them all on the incompetent buffoons found in British high society, that's my style sir.

>>97245555That anon means they started out that way. Typically warlords and very successful barbarian killers and conquerors set up the main noble houses once they were done conquering. Their kids and grandkids grew up in the lap of luxury and turned out to be the wealthy educated elites in society. But if you look back far enough, most of those families started out with a guy with a last name like The Conqueror, Bloodaxe, Ironfang, Skullcrusher, The Terible, etc.

>>97250546damn that's fuckin neato anon, love the colors and the freehanded patterns, very original. tell me how you got that aged ivory color
>>97250825thanks anon, the cream/bone/ivory colour is just Vallejo model color buff with a burnt sienna oil paint "wash" (I just paint all over and wipe it off). the buff plays nicer with the sienna wash than other "bone" colours I've used. I assume it's because it's slightly yellower than the others and so yellows and "ages" nicely in the reddish brown wash/glaze. And then can be rehighlighted with the buff since any amount of the oil paint yellows it.

Do you prefer systems with a strict class-based martial/caster division or classless systems that allow anyone to dip into anything at the cost of never being great at it?
There is no reason at all that you shouldn't be able to make a character that is good at sneaking and good at fighting if that's what you want to do.
>>97249589>there shouldn't be a class that's completely useless in a major phase of the game. That should be obvious and I never suggested that. I don't think you should discount a good design philosophy simply due to a boneheaded execution. Gaps in class performance should always be vertical slices of a game.

Previous thread: >>97111514GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.If you're wondering where to start:- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.Thread question: How often do you use an official GURPS setting? Which are your favorites?

ATR is about animation cancels, anon.>>97246815>they should be able to purchase the exact same hacking skill at a cheaper point cost.No. GURPS suggests restricting skill acquisition depending on the game world. The training rules suggest that a teacher can only help a character raise his skill up to the teacher's relative skill, or to invest as many points as the teacher has in a skill. So only hackers from the hacker faction can raise Hacking to IQ+3 for example. If you offer discounts some players will have more points to put elsewhere, which can absolutely unbalance PCs and seed discontent in the party.
>>97246815>1) how to account for certain factions being better at certain subjects?Access. Let's think in terms of C&C Generals.US is better at Air Superiority not because they can buy Engineer (High-Performance Airplane) for cheap but because they have access to it at all. US has widespread education that allows engineers to be formed, and heavy investment in aerospace to make said engineers specializing in High-Performance Airplane worth it, not to mention more know-how and trade secrets (higher skill level).
Just had my first gurps game that wasn't dungeon fantasy. Using GURPS action rules but point value lowered to 150pts instead of 250, with challenges toned down in turn. We're using lots of cinematic and extra effort rules too.So far, it's been pretty fun, and it didn't devolve into just sitting in one cover and shooting. The firefight had grappling, jumping through windows, shootdiving like max payne, and stealth kills. Even had the opportunity to use some tactical shooting extreme conditions rules due to the fight taking place in the extreme north of greenland.Only thing I'm iffy about when comparing melee combat and ranged combat is that with guns, you do nothing but aim for the vitals or torso, there's no reason to aim anywhere else outside of trying to avoid DR.-7 for the head is not worth considering the multiplier is just +1, and hitting legs and arms does too little damage with pi and pi- pistols.
>>97251013I just allow targeting random location to get the occasional head or limb hit in
>>97251013forgot pic>>97251049I don't like adding extra rolls, having to roll 3d6 and look a table after every roll sucks.I wish there was an online program to roll randeom hit location automatically. It would be real hand for shrapnel and shotguns.
So, imagine for a second that a GM is pitching you a sci-fi game to play in soon. The setting is "like StarCraft," the rules system is a new one to you (Flex D6 if it's essential you know), and the general flow of the game is described as flying a small ship around and going on planet side adventures in the face of an approaching disaster. What do you need to know, or want to know, ahead of time? What would be useful to you practically, creatively, etc? Do you want a session zero?
>>97250918>session zeroYes, but has to be setting description, group character creation and a short encounter to get everyone on board. >need to know Rules to the game ideally on a quick reference sheet or short 4 page thing. >want to know Scifi sort, space opera, fantastical, very soft, a bit more technical, are the people I'm playing with part of a regular group or new? >usefulElevator pitch for the setting, blurbs for the space area, how space travel works, what themes we're aiming at, how character mortality works.
Why were so many of the "OG" game designers insufferable faggots? It seems like the vast majority of game designers from the 70s and 80s were self-obsessed dickheads who openly hated and looked down on their customer base. There were obviously exceptions, and some like Gygax would go on to regret and apologize for it, but still, what made so many "professionals" back then such fags?Pic related: WFRP author James Wallis's response to a letter criticizing how railroaded The Enemy Within campaign was.

You should ALWAYS cheese every encounter. If you EVER end up in a situation that even remotely resembles a fair fight, just run away and wait until you can rig the situation to your favor. Use your fucking brain. Even if it is highly improbable for you to lose a given fight, statistically speaking, you'll still eventually croak if you keep taking those bets. Don't leave it up to chance. It's easier than you might think, you just need to use your noggin. It's not a video game. You can do whatever the fuck you want.Just the other night my party ran into a melee monster in a narrow ass room that they for some reason decided to ram their dicks into until someone died. When I suggested that we retreat for a bit and lure it into the room with the big ass statues so we can all just climb them and shoot it to death, they looked at me like I just escaped from the looney bin. They all died of course.
