I'm working on a journey system with a few specific goals. One of which is to hone down on events that can happen to parties during a journey which - ideally - present the players with interesting problems to solve.

Working document is here if you'd like to peruse: https://files.catbox.moe/7hfxya.pdf

I'm curious if any experienced GMs have ideas on interesting journey complications (both positive and negative) that- ideally- might allow for opportunities for players to problem solve?

Picrel is the list I've got right now (very basic)
>>
My one and only bump
>>
A long time ago, in a discussion about character traits in a narrative game, someone explained how he really didn't like the idea of splitting character concepts into Flaws and Positive aspects, because that restricted players from thinking more creatively and dynamically. The best character concepts were ones that could be both good or bad, depending on how the players chose to work with it. With that bouncing around in my head, I began to re-examine my random event charts, and came to grow wary of splitting events into positive or negative. I had been running random events where they were split in such a fashion, and I realized the players had been naturally subconsciously meta-gaming. They would react to a situation with less curiosity and just try to figure out whether the situation was meant to be good or bad for them, and the whole process began to feel less organic.

I feel events should strive for a similar level of flexibility. While some may be obviously bad or good, I get concerned when too many are too obviously weighted in such a fashion, especially after having recently played with a DM who employed such an obvious system and was clearly designating characters as enemies or allies long before we ever interacted with them. One player even started deliberately messing with clearly designated ally NPCs just to see if he could actually influence events, and when it became clear that we were just sort of stumbling into situations where how good or bad they were had already been decided by some roll of the die,

Man may be the measure of all things, but a Player-centric universe where all things are determined by their relation to the PC's fate begins to feel like a very small world.
>>
>>97358910
One thing I've included is treasure chests (in a puzzle format) and replacement PC/NPCs (ala tree of woe). Now I also do hexcrawls so that changes how stuff is run, but stuff like that could work for you.
One other thing I do for travel is preroll the encounter types, the PCs then roll during play to see how "well" they do, on a 5/10/15/20 scale. I'd add some stuff to account for that
>>
>>97358910
I think the ambush should always be an attempted ambush the players can spot.

I think you're on the right path, but there's no player agency in this yet.

>They would react to a situation with less curiosity and just try to figure out whether the situation was meant to be good or bad for them, and the whole process began to feel less organic.

Honestly, I hadn't thought of this. Really, your post gave me a lot to think about. Perhaps "events" should be divorced from what I originally had planned.

Maybe the best designed events/encounters/situations have a grey zone that allows for curiosity, exploration, and alternative outcomes depending on the approach characters take.

Do you think there's also room for "fortune/misfortune"? I could always reduce pathfinding to finding a way or getting lost. I just feel like it misses out on depth in doing so.

>>97359723
The cool thing about my system is that it runs very similarly to a hexcrawl in the sense that the entire map is very much open to the players to explore. However, the actual specific (and accurate) measurements of terrain are only known to the GM (via a hexmap- which the GM can key an populate if they choose). I'm a big fan of creative encounters that can be plopped down in front of players (Forbidden Lands style)

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>How do I get started?

There are two ways to handle this that could even be used together. One is it can only be transferred under certain circumstances, like the full moon. An other is only strong werewolves can do it. Not really sure how to apply that to WoD/CofD. Speaking of which, Forsaken does also have a Facet that can temporarily make people shitty, out of control werewolves and it is also possible for Lunacy to turn someone into a Wolf-Blooded, making it sort of transmissible.

what isn't effortless about it? you click slice, you push the start button then you swirl it in a jar of ISO, drop it in a container of hot water and the supports practically detach themselves.

you have to use mask, gloves, watch for the resin to not get stuck, to not drop resin anywhere, to clean the VAT

fdm is import into slicer, press print
>>
>>97359701
>you have to use mask, gloves, watch for the resin to not get stuck, to not drop resin anywhere, to clean the VAT
No, no, no and no
resin is also import into slicer and click print, the failures do to improper supports are just as prevalent, with resin it's as simple as using a good slicer like lychee to auto support, with fdm you often have to redesign the file to prevent failures.
I use both, both have strengths and weaknesses, the problems with resin usually occur with catastrophic failures, being too cheap and using an FEP sheet too long, having it break and then dealing with a mess as you try to drain it back into the bottle with a hole in it.
vat cleaning? a joke, if you have a resin failure you remove the vat, you gently press underneath with your finger to lift an edge and then remove the bit of solid resin.
gloves are unnecessary, mask is being a paranoid bitch, even the MSDS states that the only long term risks of resin are to aquatic life if you dispose of liquid resin improperly, but why would you dump out liquid resin? that's your desired material, the only resin you should be disposing of is failures that can't be used and cast off supports, but even failures often get repurposed into things like objective markers, terrain scraps and sources of spare weapon bits, etc...
with FDM a failure an result in burning your fucking house down, you can walk away from a resin print, you can't walk away from an FDM, at least not without taking a risk.
that's not to say you should print in FDM, it's an incredible tool and I use it for far more than just hobbying, FDM can and does produce useful objects for everyday life and even here on the farm I save thousands of dollars making incidental parts for the tractor and other heavy equipment that the dealer would charge me absurd amounts for.

Make new friends and hype them up to play a game until we actually play the game, I've done it twice, with my first playgroup being my normal friends who we've just stopped RP games and mostly play MtG, then my second group was co-workers about 2 years ago. My third group has members of the previous group but unlike the previous one, everyone shows up for every session (for the most part), which is made easier by the fact that we play using a digital tabletop so people can play from home.

12/10/8/6 isn't based on statistics, though. It's completely based on vibes. You're just counting down from 12 by 2, it's way too pretty.
>>
>>97359679
12 is ran because its a 95% chance to have a rookie in 1 of your 2 hands with a mulligan.
its also why searcher rookies still have a lot of value because you have a very good chance of finding finding >1 (75%)

11 is 93% and 70% chance
10 is 90% and a 65% chance

when you add in consistency options this gets a lot smoother, and its more complicated when going 2nd because of the extra draw + chance to play a training without passing turn in many situations (or another search) and it is based on maths. or at least feel based testing that is then proven to be reasonable based on maths.

the 10/8/6 step down is just because you need less of the higher levels and to fit into the rest of your deck but isn't really maths based
if you want to run 12/9/7/5 you will be fine. cutting lvl 3's can lead to lot more no rookie games, especially if you are limited in what else you can open alongisde that rookie, many decks are happy to run 10 rookies because they have so many other plays to go with them and can just pretty much solely mulligan for them, others need more specific pieces and cutting down rookie counts is a huge problem.

Force organizations that are highly thematic and restricted. Pick a list of related units, take variant A, B, or C for that list which changes up exactly what's in it but are all still line with its base concept. Make each player pick the same number and maybe types of lists.

PTA and PTU (which is based on PTA) are a total slog. You basically need tools, because there's so much fucking crunch. The powerscaling gets pretty insane too, since trainers can potentially learn how to use moves like Pokemon do.

You can play Pokerole instead, which is much less cumbersome, and takes inspiration from Storyteller system, but you might need to be ready to improvise and homebrew some things.
>>
>>97356918
pokerole is pretty promising, I'm not looking for a full package just a startpoint I can simplify further to introduce the concept of rpgs to 10-year-olds. PTA, PTU, Oddysee and PTR yeah they seem too complex for that.
>>
>>97357118
Part of the issue with PTA/PTU is that the math tries to resemble the video games too much. It just bogs everything down with bookkeeping, and makes generating new things laborious.

Pokerole is simple. Attribute+Stat=Dice Pool and roll for successes is the type of thing. It's meant for more fast and loose adventuring, with a style closer to the manga, and where you can control the scale of the game as a GM by using the sort of tier system for what trainers are capable of doing.

>gameplay
For Centaurs, you should be able to use them as mounts when not in combat if they're lightly armed & armored. I think you could ride into battle with them and fight on their back without overburdening them, depending on your loadout. Squeezing into dungeons and caves might be a bit of a bitch, and your centaur companion may find themselves too cumbersome to accompany you in certain locations. If people in wheelchairs can make do, I'm sure a transmog potion or a shrinking potion might solve the problem.
>fantasy settings
They're more at home here for sure, like having a horse. Some taverns may give you a hard "no" for your centaur companion, but I'm sure regions that are steeped in centaur culture or adjacent ones have accommodations for their unique anatomy. If nothing else, they could help carry your camp supplies and other provisions.
>loadouts for fantasy
If you're not riding them, I think they can be pretty well armed and armored- think tower shield and a mace/flail. They also make good spearmen, so I think they'd be comfortable wielding a halbard and similar pike-style weapons. This would be with them wearing plate mail cuirass for the human portion and chainmail curtain over their horse hind quarters, or perhaps some specially fitted Gambeson. Other plate sections could be fitted to their horse body as needed. Archery and crossbows seem like they'd work for ranged options. I've not considered them using magic, but having a fairly mobile spellcaster seems cool as well.

They know enough to make a Disable a Device check at least, although how much more than that kind of depends on the hazard. The relevant rules here are (as listed here https://2e.aonprd.com/Rules.aspx?ID=2846):

Detecting a Hazard:
>"Every hazard has a trigger of some kind that sets its dangers in motion. For traps, this could be a mechanism like a trip wire or a pressure plate, while for an environmental hazard or haunt, the trigger may simply be proximity. When characters approach a hazard, they have a chance of finding the trigger area or mechanism before triggering the hazard. "

Later in that same block of text:
>"Anyone who succeeds [a secret Perception check against the hazard's Stealth DC] becomes aware of the hazard, and you can describe what they notice."

The first quote specifies that they're rolling to detect the trigger area or mechanism, and the second clarifies that a successful perception check makes them aware of the hazard, with the GM describing what the character actually notices in the world. Nowhere does it say that they learn what the hazard *is*, although it's often obvious (e.g. the mechanics of a hidden spike pit are pretty clear once you've noticed it), and when it's not I imagine a relevant Recall Knowledge would probably tell them more about it.

What's clear, however, is that they've definitely found it, and they can make a roll to disable it. The rules for disabling hazards are a little further down:

Disabling a Hazard:
>"A character must first detect a hazard (or have it pointed out to them) to try to deactivate it."

this quality of the video is hilariously shit as I expected it to be, but what did you think about the gameplay? Better than that Dawnsbury crap I constantly see people glazing

Seems pretty uninspired, but the execution will matter the most.

Gonna be playing strange aeons with my friends. The party is a barbarian, mesmerist, and a witch. I was looking at the oracle. The thematic suggestions are dark tapestry, lore, and time. As a first time oracle I was curious which of these I would have the least amount of trouble with.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

>I am thinking of that room having a ladder up to a hatch right by the entrance of the dungeon - this being the lower level - to cut escaping players off.
I'm not sure I understand how a potential escape route might serve to cut the PCs off. Are you suggesting the dungeon inhabitants have reinforcements up there who will come down? Or is the idea that PCs will not find the ladder/not think to use it to flee if they do find it, and the undead will thus use it to get to the exit before the players and maul them there?

Anyway, as long as it's discoverable I can't personally see a huge issue with it as long as you're okay with the PCs using it to escape faster if they find it, instead. Multiple passages between levels is ideal.

primarily, the loot increase is only for magic items, not gold. this will give them a gold sink in having to get many items identified or scrounge up scrolls. experimentation can still be used, but a scroll or identify spell is immediate and thorough, without the risk of being cursed. that's my thought anyway. maybe I've been playing too much POWDER and shattered pixel dungeon.

If you're using stock software for the kindle don't waste your time. If you're using 3rd party software, don't waste your time.

Physical dimensions 5.6" (142 mm) by 4.2". Pic related is what you'll see at various zooms. The coloured boxes match the colorsoft ar. I could have just told you to zoom the long side of each box to 5.6" on your screen but I went to the extra effort to make those details. They're 840 px on the long side, same as the colour res of the colorsoft so you can zoom them to 5.6" as well. It's all readable but it's a poor experience.

If you abandon the native software, which you'll do unless you're stupid, reflow doesn't improve things very much for a pdf full of tables, some of them sideways. The zoom, column and and scroll when zoomed options help but not a lot. Native search options are poor. The 3rd party software searches are better.

Reflow and search rely upon the book being oef or properly ocred. A lot of lazy people use fully automated ocr on poor scans and leave thousands of errors. There's a really good chance a search will miss that one instance of "ultravision" you really needed. Page searching through an actual paper book can be a lot faster than tapping through an ebook.

The colorsoft is very well named because the colour is soft. Colour murders the resolution from 300 ppi to 150 ppi. Fine for comic books, not good when you have a text dense document like a D&D rule book. They have the technology to make the colour 300ppi but they throw on a cfa and still charge premium price.

The book switching is still a major hassle. It's one book loaded at a time like most tablets. If you can handle book switching on a tablet you'll have about as much success on a kindle with 3rd party software.

I would recommend laptop, tablet, other ereader in that order with the ereader as a last resort. Unless you're playing outside the contrast of a led screen is good enough. The extra size of even a 10" tablet makes a huge difference.

Seconded.
Kindle sucks ass for game stuff. It's for slow reading, not active reference
