After playing both the original Shandalar and the 2016 update version I've come to the conclusion that magic was just more fun in 1995 when it was more loose and relaxed. The kinds of decks you go up against in the 2016 version are so much more ruthless about shutting down every play you make that the only way to compete is to be an even more obnoxious dickhead and make sure they never get a chance to do anything. Every victory was bitter and spiteful in a way that I never felt with the older simpler Magic cards.

I liked old magic better too (haven't played competitively in ages now). as >>97354358 points out some of that is just nostalgia. mtg was full of broken ass combos from Day 1, and it definitely didn't end with unlimited rotating and type II either. and >>97356397 s right that some of it was just being a kid and engaging with the game like a kid was inherently more fun too. BUT all that said, I do think the baseline casual kitchen table magic was more fun. by default wincons just werent as fast and were easier to derail. game often had big swings where an early lead by aggro would peter out and the other player could come back.

>>97374553
no they don't have to. and for that kind of game they probably shouldn't. slower more thematic decks would have been good. the original shandalar was fun in spite of being able to break the game with an uber fuckoff combo if you wanted to.

>>97358140
definitely this. very common sentiment. repeat theme when you read interviews or meet card game designers is them prefacing with nostalgia about 90s magic and trying to recapture it. garfield wrote a whole manifesto about how the point of Keyforge existing was to force players back into that "just do the coolest thing you can with the deck you have" playground headspace. modern post-MTG desgins like Sorcery or Ashes are explicitly about refocusing on the slow build and push-pull of a creature heavy battlefield, with uninteractive burn and combo strats much weaker than in mtg and less hard control effects. everybody just tryna go back in time.
>>
>>97374553
You could but you will have to make them all yourself custom.
The default ones that came with Modern were too powerful
>>
>>97356397
I liked old casual yugioh because it was grindy and full of back and forth. I don't know about the meta at the time cause I never cared about it, but nowadays the game feels very one sided and boring.

Cube is the only enjoyable way to play nowadays for me

Goblins have existed in folklore for centuries in various forms, but where and when was it decided that Goblins are green? in 1st edition d&d, thwey're described as having various skin shades, green not being specified or standing out among the.
a lot of people assume warhammer, but spiderman had a green goblin before warhammer, so what the fuck

Literally (literally) this guy.

The Warhammer goblins have their appearance based off of him. Final Fantasy 1 also used the same style of goblins and so it got into japanese media as well.

I've seen someone say that that if the Green Goblin were made today he wouldn't be called the Green Goblin because it's redundant but if he were made today goblins would be completely different.

Welcome to /wbg/, the official thread for the discussion of in-progress settings for traditional games.

Here is where you go to present and develop the details of your worlds such as lore, factions, magic and ecosystems. You can also post maps for your settings, as well as any relevant art (either created by you or used as inspiration for your work). Start by answering the question of why are the things the way they are?
Doesn't have to be a common goal of some sort.

I.e. in case of Planescape's Sigil, it's because Sigil is the multiversal hub.
People sometimes just drop in there through a random portal.
Once you figure out the "why", think about the "how", as in how are they living together.
Like, whether or not fire elementals have their own, fireproof, "elemental" district.

Without going into details, a nondescript tavern for the travelers on a budget should work.
Fair grounds, markets and neighboring areas - anywhere that sees a lot of traffic, both locals and outsiders.
People from all over can share news and information, and alcohol often helps break the ice.
Tea and coffee houses, opium or hashish dens, look for places people can go to relax and have a quiet conversation in private.

Yes? Many important traits are genetic but most societies historically did not practice eugenics. Natural selection sufficed.

Eugenics has really only ever been practiced to (unsuccessfully attempt to) remove discontinuous negative traits from the gene pool, whether it was Spartans leaving out disabled babies or the Nazis killing all the schizophrenics. Positive selection for discontinuous traits was never practiced, because humans do not like being forced to not ever have children because only the special people with the magic genes get to have children, and that kind of eugenics would do that to the majority of the population.

(To be clear, the magic users will be more sexually successful unless it has huge disadvantages elsewhere, for the same reason rich people are more sexually successful; eugenics refers to the specific practice of bringing intentionality into it.)
>>
>>97374682
I hate how the Nazis ruined eugenics for everyone. It's objectively a good idea to maintain the health of the population.

The City is primarily biological though many of it's technologies and especially it's foundations incorporate inorganic materials to them or are outright mechanical in nature. The City is powered by massive underground power plants and is built upon ferrous bone supports that dig deep into the crust of the earth. The roots of the City spread far and wide and leech off materials from the soil into the City's biosphere.

It's not. Actually maladaptive traits automatically breed themselves out.

There are permutations of beast people that are not furshit(argonians, skaven, etc.). Furries still like them, but, inherently, beastmen are a separate thing from furries.
There are no permutations of humans with animal ears and tails that are not weebshit.

It's actually the one reason why, despite having a lot of fantasy miniatures in general (both GW and others) I don't actually like using them in RPG's. Any markers or grid maps or the like, really. In my experience it flips players straight into 'wargame mode' and they move and fight accordingly. Ends up quite dull.

Hey there

I've decided to start a West Marches-style campaign on my LGS. It sounds the perfect style to run for a public setting w/ rotating players, but I myself have never DMed one

Any experiences, tips and advices regarding DM-ing/playing West Marches style games?

Or general tips for running games on LGS ?

For those unfamiliar with West Marches style, here is what google have to say about it:
>Player-Driven Exploration: Players decide where to go and what to explore, venturing into unknown territory from a safe starting town.
>Rotating Cast: A large pool of players participates, but different combinations of adventurers form parties for each session, preventing the need for a single regular group.
>Sandbox World: The world is a sandbox, with the map and plot emerging as players discover new locations and rumors, rather than being dictated by the GM.
>No Fixed Schedule: Sessions occur when players organize themselves, often on a voluntary basis.
>Low GM Prep: The Game Master (GM) focuses on creating a world and potential encounters, responding to player choices, rather than crafting complex plots.
>Self-Contained Sessions: Adventures are often designed to be resolved in a single session, with storylines evolving over time.

The definition the community takes, in the end of the day, ends up being more relevant than the definition of the original post ~20 years ago. Google gay robots, as gay as they are, provide you with basically an unholy amalgamation of what the internet has been posting. Thus, it is actually a decent quick portrait of what the overall consensus is. You're bait so you obviously know by this time I've watched & read tons of guides and seen pretty much all the popular definitions of this genre

But ok, if you want to go RAW, let's do it:
>arsludi lamemage com, article #78, grand-experiments-west-marches

We have 3 pillars:
>1. There was no regular time: every session was scheduled by the players on the fly.
>2. There was no regular party: each game had different players drawn from a pool of around 10-14 people.
>3. There was no regular plot: The players decided where to go and what to do. It was a sandbox game in the sense that’s now used to describe video games like Grand Theft Auto, minus the missions. There was no mysterious old man sending them on quests. No overarching plot, just an overarching environment.

Let's start with point 3. My game obviously satisfy this criteria because its a sandbox, there's no quest giver, there's no overarching plot. I started off giving 3 rumors for practical reasons: this is the first session, players are dumb AND not accustomed with having that level of agency. Through a party that has 20-year tradition of regular plot-driven campaigns into a sandbox without a plan is asking for disaster. Thus, I provided 3 rumors they could follow, with no promise they would work out

Point 2 is basically impossible to achieve w/ 1 session, since basically anything above 6 players is crazy for a single session. Nevertheless, considering we have +2 people that would join that party later and at least +6 coming in next Tuesday on the LGS, we would have, at minimum, 11 players accounted for. Thus, mathematically proven ( 10 < 11 < 14 )

>>97374697
>>97374756
At last, we get back to point 1

Point 1 is bullshit in my opinion, and I've explicitly said so many times in this thread (such as here >>97317589 and here >>97321780 )

Nevertheless, let's dig deeper into it. The official schedule is every two Tuesdays 7pm at the LGS. Having a fixed schedule is, technically, not West March-y. However, yesterday, we played at 8pm on a Thursday on some random dude's house, which is neither the day, time or place of the original schedule. Thus, behold! The schedule is not fixed! It can happen upon demand!

If that groups keep going (and I hope they will), we will have at least 2 different times schedules happening in parallel to accommodate different players. Thus, matching the original poster's goal:
>A secondary goal was to make the schedule adapt to the complex lives of adults

I already plan on giving the opportunity for players to schedule sessions outside of those two pre-defined days, but at this point in time it makes no sense to overthink about how scheduling like that will work in a month from the game. But ultimately, me as the DM, also happen to be a an adult with a somewhat complex life, thus, my schedule matters too

As a DM of 20+ years, I can tell y'all that "sessions scheduled by players on the fly" would only potentially work after establishing the campaign & the mood. Its unfeasible to just assume players will be that proactive right off the bat. Ask all DMs you know, out of all the groups they DM'ed for, who was responsible for scheduling & controlling player attendance/invites, and I bet they will say at least 90% of the time that was all on the DM

For those interested in actual discussion and/or the progress of the thread/this whole thing, pic related is the map from yesterday test session
>X is starting point
>Numbered hexes is where player explored

Note I'm adding number indexes by hand. I know a lot of hexes templates already have indexes, but I both didn't like how they were formatted, and I felt it was useful to add manually so that I know whether that hex has previous entry or not (a hex with no previous entry = basically still a blank page)

I'm though also reconsidering the index system, might label it by environment (like numbering all parts of the same forest a similar index entry to put it all together). Not sure how I will proceed with this sort of bookkeeping on my part, especially because I need something high efficient to avoid taking time during sessions. Worst part is... the binder I was excited to use for this whole thing turns out to be too big and not fit inside my DM screen :|

Armor interferes with the flow of the winds of magic. You suffer a malus to casting spells and channeling spells in WFRP while wearing armor, based on the most protective armor.
However, not for all spheres of magic. You can cast spells of the lore of beasts while wearing leather armor without a malus. And spells of the lore of metal while wearing anything metal.
It's a pretty hefty malus. If your character is really good at spellcasting, he may start to just take it and wear armor regardless (and elves are really good mages). However, it shouldn't really be worth it. Unless you are a wizard ascribing to the aforementioned lores.
Unfunny fun fact: your wizard is supposed to dress in a way that fits his chosen lore of magic. There is no mechanic for that, it's more flavor. But in general, what your character wears can help or hinder the flow of the winds.
High Elves can eventually learn all winds of magic, so they may end up looking just wizard-like.

Being a japanese highschool student is a very common profession for anime protagonists.

Numerous other examples aside from Beowulf

That's "orc" as a word for a large sea creature. Same place we get orca. Unrelated word except insofar as both descend from Orcus.
>>
>>97374461
A large sea creature among other uses and not at all unrelated
Do you think Tolkien didn't read or something? Again, he didn't invent the word and wasn't the first to use it to describe some monstrous creature
Tolkien's orcs are distinctly his creation same as his dwarves and elves are, but that doesn't mean he literally dreamt up the word from the void and it wasn't an extension of a previously existing literary tradition/continuum

I think he's just massively underestimating Tolkien as a linguist. The name orc has so many connections that it was more a stroke of genius to use the term for his goblins than anything else:
>Slavs use ýpкa (urka) to refer to criminals
>Gaelics use orc to refer to pigs
>Italians use orco to refer to ogres or man-eating brutes
>Old English uses orc and orcneas to refer to evil spirits (the latter referencing corpses as well)
Put it all together and you can easily see the lineage of his Orcs.

I personally prefer Ian Miller's design since seeing them in 90's in one of those David Day's crappy books of middle earth.

I heard Japan is going nuts over them and that it's only the west that complains. If anything, the game's just going to die in the west and strive over there. It's not like Bushi ever cared about the west anyway.

I want to kill the person who didn't add these then myself.
