Shit GM Thread, because while you players are awful, there are some really shit GMs out there too.
>GM advertises game as a destroyed world by demons and whatever and people trying to live through or retake the world
>sounds good, throw my application in and get in
>trying to make a character from a destroyed noble house destroyed from said demons
>no info or lore or anything so just make one background that can fit in
>ask GM if it's okay and if I can fill it in with finer details
>he just says nah you're good
>is there a map?
>he just gives me some random borders map that looks like it was generated from some website
>yeah choose a region where your noble house was from I'm still working on the details
>his username is some pretentious TheLoreMaster btw
>whatever as long as he can provide a good story as the game goes on

>me and other players make our characters
>he then tells us to create a shared backstory

I agree with the first 2

Either trade them or take the trade off, power from magic or higher proficiency

Half this country has hysterical freakouts constantly about an impending fascist takeover that is never happening. The other half promises me a communist famine state run by dirkas and shitjeets will get me first. A sizable minority assures me both are wrong and I'm going to roast in Hell unless I get down with the Christ-ness. Nihilistic apathy is a minority opinion, even if Howard was a neurotic dude.

Yeah but nobody on this board reads the Conan Stories. Their conan knowledge is almost exclusively limited to the shitty movies, comics and frazetta art. They don't read any of Howard's conan stories let alone his non conan tales.
>"Worms of the earth, back into your holes and burrows! Ye foul the air and leave on the clean earth the slime of the serpents ye have become! Gonar was right—there are shapes too foul to use even against Rome!"
>He sprang from the Ring as a man flees the touch of a coiling snake, and tore the stallion free. At his elbow Atla was shrieking with fearful laughter, all human attributes dropped from her like a cloak in the night.
>"King of Pictland!" she cried, "King of fools! Do you blench at so small a thing? Stay and let me show you real fruits of the pits! Ha! ha! ha! Run, fool, run! But you are stained with the taint—you have called them forth and they will remember! And in their own time they will come to you again!"
>He yelled a wordless curse and struck her savagely in the mouth with his open hand. She staggered, blood starting from her lips, but her fiendish laughter only rose higher.
>Bran leaped into the saddle, wild for the clean heather and the cold blue hills of the north where he could plunge his sword into clean slaughter and his sickened soul into the red maelstrom of battle, and forget the horror which lurked below the fens of the west. He gave the frantic stallion the rein, and rode through the night like a hunted ghost, until the hellish laughter of the howling were-woman died out in the darkness behind.

There's only one realm that's played any significant role in the campaign so far and it's currently in a 3 or 4 way civil war between
>The anointed emperor, in an alliance with the new class of bourgeoisie burghers, fighting to wrestle power back from regency council/parliament and reestablish absolutist monarchy, complete with his family's long-standing tradition of demon-worship.
>The conservative nobles, who thought they'd firmly secured power during the emperor's minority and are now fighting to bring him back under the thumb of parliament.
>The revolutionaries, determined that power should be in the hands of the common people (or at least themselves, as appropriate representatives of tehe common people). They're also broadly determined that the emperor, the nobility and anyone without sufficient revolutionary zeal should be sacrificed to demons, not because they're worshiping the demons of course, the demons are just useful tools.
>The northern duke, currently in broad alignment with the rest of the nobility but from a culturally distinct polity and clearly tempted to either secede or conquer the entire empire for himself.

>all realms
Unlikely. Based on late renaissance and early modernism so there's a lot of shifting monarchies, feudalism, city states, mercantilism and attempts at other models based on theological schisms with the not!pope like Breakers and Levelers. Plus what the Occident, Orient, Savage Lands and the New World are up to. In game variety wise this mostly plays out as different orientations of towns on the hex map and random encounters. Some of the more isolated areas end up being town councils by default with occasional interruptions by larger powers. The players haven't really struck out for any particular faction yet but having their allegiances and reputation preceding them will be more of a thing as the campaign progresses.

I'm at my wits end with the saturn 3 I have, will not stay level after screws tighten no matter what I do. I tried fdm printing a whole frame to keep it still in spite of it but it still manages to completely tweak itself out of alignment.

So the frame pieces is at least 18x18 cm, so FDM is the better choice. It looks simple enough that a bambu machine is not necessary, cheaper machines will print something like that just fine.

Any newish printer from a reliable company like elegoos neptune 4 will do fine, or if you want to choose bambu a a1 would be enough.

Bambu is like apple, good quality, pricey for what it is but they put in extra work to have an easy to use closed eco system.

I am looking for a game that is a mix between HeroQuest and Battletech. In that it is a duel type game rather than a dungeon crawler, movement is hex based, there are items and objects you can pick up and interact with, and there are fixed action points per character deployed, and each action a character takes costs action points. Is there anything you would personally recommend that sounds like this, or do I have to homebrew such a system myself?
>>
>>97286252
Are you looking for a specific existing game, or asking if there is a game that satisfies your highly specific criteria?
If it's the former, I unironically recommend searching by mechanics on BGG. As shitty as the site has became, the search is still great.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

>Hyperborea
I guess it's fine if you like it, but suggesting Hyperborea to someone who's asking about AD&D is misleading at best.
>>
>>97286902
No it isn't. Hyperborea is basically the core of AD&D but without a nonsense Gygax initiative system.
>>
>>97283784
>trying to steal it to make AD&D 2e on-topic
2e was on topic in the original osrg threads, trying to exclude 2e makes this a usurper thread but keep on lying to yourself and the others.
>>
>>97286902
>>97286698 (me)
Hyperborea definitely shares the bones but it really is its own thing. I actually quite enjoy segmented combat, so it's something I'd likely houserule back into Hyperborea.
>>
>>97286902
NAYRT but IMO it makes perfect sense. You can agree that OSRIC is the most faithful AD&D retroclone and still think Hyperborea is the *better* AD&D retroclone. LotFP occupied a very similar niche relative to B/X pre-OSE: I don't think anybody would have argued it was more faithful than Labyrinth Lord. People just liked it better.

If you could choose the set of core classes (in the PHB/core book and ideally the rest of the classes are designed around them) what would you choose?
They don't have to be identical to their current incarnations.

For me its,
>Ranger,
absorbs a lot of the fighter but keeps the independent survivalist schtick.
>Paladin,
Divine warrior with special abilities but no spells
>Rogue,
Sneaky stabby martial, basically as he is now
>Wizard,
>Druid,
>Cleric,
Default to being lightly armoured wandering friar tuck type character, but with options to put on some armour and bonk.

>What is the difference meaningfully between Monk 'wuxia' behaviour, fighter enhanced ability scores and rogue skills?
Lists of increasingly-wonky techniques on the Monk versus throwing big numbers into "default" rules until things get wonky on the Fighter versus using an actual skill subsystem that bundles functions into areas of proficiency that get wonky when you're That Good with the Rogue.

"Weaboo Fightan Magic" is an old pejorative for the Tome of Battle supplement for 3.5, back-porting a later-abandoned 4e prototype into a subsystem with classes substituting for the Fighter, Monk, and Paladin. It has stuff like covering your sword with a jet of flames for extra damage and reach at 3rd level, generally once per encounter due to the refresh mechanics but being 3.5 there are naturally shenanigans to loop.

>and what you mean by wargame abilities on the fighter
Before WotC got the IP, it was expected that higher-level characters eventually got positions of political power lording over increasing numbers of class-appropriate NPCs, which grounded the scope-creep of enemies surmounted in actual setting influence which in turn compensated for the proactive value of spellcasting by letting the Fighter send dudes to get things done in a number of places simultaneously because the casters became bosses of a lot less dudes. In the earliest versions, this directly cited the wargame preceding D&D called Chainmail for resolving combats with dozens to hundreds of participants.
