Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:>n00b DM's Guidehttps://pastebin.com/EVvt6P0B>n00b Player's Handbookhttps://pastebin.com/XALkXkV0>Troves, Resources, Blogs, etc:http://pastebin.com/9fzM6128Comment too long. >>97851293If you truly understand the DMG, which is no easy task not only because it's written in High Gygaxian, but more importantly because a large chunk of what it tells you to do is completely unclear until you actually try it at the table for months if not years, your inevitable conclusion will be that it is completely irreconcilable with 5e.
>>97851293There's a lot in there that's relevant to any game you run, and a lot that's specific to 1e. And a lot of polearms. In any event, it's worth a careful going over or three.
>>97851314>no easy task it's written in High GygaxianYou mean it emphasizes the need to track time
>>97851906Oh no don't bring up time tracking in this general.
>>97852175We've had many good discussions of time tracking here, though?
I keep seeing so many third party DnD stuff with massive kickstarters and loads of books. Are there any of these that are actually good?>inb4 no because 5e
>>97851642>As far as I've seen, most 5e-compatible content is fucking terrified of actually changing or improving anything. They'll tack on a handful of subclasses, but they won't make new classes or change the way the base classes work.Mostly because they are written by wanna be novelists and not actually game designers.
>>97851642>but they'll still be 5eWhich is a good thing, considering it's the best RPG and the most popular by far.
>>97851741>Mostly because they are written by wanna be novelists and not actually game designers. Then how come none of them ever write actual campaigns? Isn't that WotC's Achilles heel? If they like D&D so much, you'd think they'd write stories about it instead of just waiting for Paizo to convert their shit over.

I don't know if anyone else does this, but I've psyoped myself into only making Jumps that I think I could survive as a first Jump. Like, if there's no durability perks or whatnot, so hard to find a reason to make it. It's kind of the Mass Effect problem where Shepard or Nathan Drake from Uncharted just wouldn't survive what they go through. They're extremely skilled, but in the case of Nathan his health is explicitly representative of his luck, not him actually taking damage. Other settings don't necessarily do that, so you have this often extremely capable character that by all rights should just die. I put too much thought into the actuality of settings for the types of settings I'm interested in. It's not productive.
>>97852118>I've psyoped myself into only making Jumps that I think I could survive as a first Jump.Fascinating. You've somehow found a way to make me even more contemptuous of you than I thought possible. I am only interested in making jumps that will give me a war that can end me, or set me free.
>>97852123
>>97852118I make jumps so I can use the jumps from settings that interest me. I'm not going to go out of my way to limit what I make jumps from. Makes no sense to me, just comes off as another way to procrastinate from the story.

Am I an autist for having my ascetic characters ask for small beers when they visit inns or taverns?
>>97850827What's the problem with that?
>>97850827Seems fine to me. On a unrelated note. The number one thing that made me quit playing mabinogi is that inventory and bank space was so artificially limited yet they would intentionally constantly have events, quest lines, and job paths, and literally every single mechanic in the game is designed to fill your inventory no matter what you do, and the only way to partially deal with it is buy more bags from the cash shop, ideally until your inventory is nothing but bags that are bound exclusively to your character. Then a huge bulk of your time is spent managing inventory space rather than playing the fucking game.I think a time when two events were running at the same time that both flooded your inventory with random borderline useless bullshit every 10 minutes made me finally snap and quit.Talk about building a problem then selling the solution.

Welcome to /2eg/, a thread dedicated to all things 2nd Edition D&D related - including settings, lore, modules, and derived systems (Alternity, Buck Rogers XXVc, For Gold and Glory, Hackmaster, Myth and Magic, and more).Since 2e draws heavily from earlier editions, older modules are welcome too. Other media derived from AD&D (such as Infinity Engine video games) also has a home here. It's what you play, not how you play it. RAW or homebrew, as long as your table is having fun, there's no wrong way to play. There's a surprisingly complete 2e fan wiki for rules stuff, it's excellent for quick reference:https://adnd2e.fandom.com/wiki/Advanced_Dungeons_%26_Dragons_2nd_Edition_Wikiad&d 2e archiveaHR0cHM6Ly93ZWIuYXJjaGl2ZS5vcmcvd2ViLzIwMjUwMjA0MTczNzUwL2h0dHBzOi8vdGhlLWV5ZS5ldS9wdWJsaWMvQm9va3MvcnBnLnJlbS51ei9EdW5nZW9ucyUyMCYlMjBEcmFnb25zL0FEJkQlMjAybmQlMjBFZGl0aW9uLw==Remember to keep things civil.Previous thread: >>97806516Comment too long. >>97851901You mean the skills and powers stuff?
>>97851927Yeah
>>978439145e is simple in its presentation but an absolute chore to run. The amount of encounters you need to run PER ADVENTURING DAY makes it an actual slog to get through. The system focused too heavy on the epic side of epic fantasy, that it became more of a power fantasy than an adventuring questing game. You can throw monsters well above the Party's level at them and there is a high possibility they will not only kill the thing but do so without any real threat to themselves. So, designing encounters in 5e requires a lot more effort and needs to have a lot of combat to make even exploration more exciting. Its also a mentality thing, because a lot of 5e players treat the game as an MMORPG which we can thank 4e for.
>>97852088>Its also a mentality thing, because a lot of 5e players treat the game as an MMORPG which we can thank 4e for.3.5 is the one with not one but two MMOs.
>>97852088D&D is ideally MMO, it's the idea behind West Marches and what Gygax envisioned when stressing the need for time keeping. WoW just gave MMOs a bad name.
I always hear about the stir this caused, and recently about how bad or redeemable it is. I'm not certain about it myself because I dabbled with 3e and then got into 5e, never paid much attention to the scene during that entire era. What does /tg/ think of the system?

>>97844516If WotC was any worse they would have been out there murdering people. We're not far off.I know they won't because they are nothing but liars and shitheads but a few years ago when they were in trouble WotC promised 4e would be released from its current mega restrictive license and into the same really loose license that 3e and 5e are under. It would be great if they did though because then people would be able to openly make a 4.5 that's actually like 4e and not just kind of adjacent without scratching the same itch like Draw Steel.

Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. What are your top, most important painting tips that you think make the biggest impact on your painting?
>>97852031the most important thing you can do is paint cleanly without chalkyness, splotchyness, visible brush strokes, or getting paint outside where you wanted it to be. if you can do this your work will look professional no matter how simple otherwise it is. if you can't do this your models will always look amateur no matter how many advanced techniques you learned from jewtube you use.
