Since I can't find a Lancer thread at the moment, I'll start one I guess.I've recently gotten very into mecha, but the exact flavor I'm looking for seems to be somewhat limited. I'm looking for a good system to play with some friends, and so far, Lancer and Beam Saber see to be the only two that standout to me. Lancer seems pretty cut-and-dry simple to get into without being too crunchy, but I've heard it lacks on the roleplaying aspect, which confuses me, and is typically my favorite part of TTRPGs. I suppose I'd just like to know the following: - How does Lancer's system negatively impact the RP portion of the game? Isn't that more or less completely affected by the players themselves and/or myself as the GM? - For those with experience with both systems, would you recommend Lancer or Beam Saber? Or are there any other mech-based systems you'd recommend? For context, my players and I have mainly only played 5e (I've been a forever DM for about 5 years). I personally love complex mechanics, but my players not so much.
>>97845366https://pastebin.com/E2wi55AZcheck the RPGs here
>>97848197Nice! Didn't know that existed. Appreciate that.
>>97845366>For those with experience with both systems, would you recommend Lancer or Beam Saber?Different ends of the spectrum; Lancer is based on D&D 4E and Beam Saber is a Forged in the Dark game. How much crunch do you prefer?Or are there any other mech-based systems you'd recommend?Take a look at Battle Century S on Itch. It is currently PWYW; if you like it, but would prefer to use tokens and minis, check out Battle Cnetury G Remastered. The systems are very similar, but S is theatre of the mind, and G uses minis and maps.
>>97845366Lancer's mech rules are going to be pretty familiar to someone coming from D&D, but the pilot-side rules are based more on PbtA/FitD. This means that there are fewer stats, fewer mechanical "hooks" to work with, and the overall style of play is much more focused on "narrative". Any roll boils down to failing on 10-under, crit success on 20+; a single successful "Move Unseen and Unheard" roll might resolve an entire stealth scene. Frankly, the gameplay difference between mech rules and pilot rules throws a lot of people off, and I suspect that is the reason for the complaints. My experience (~150 sessions, multiple campaigns) has been that the default pilot rules are serviceable enough for a full out-of-mech session every so often, or more frequent pilot scenes interspersed with the mech fights, but this assumes the GM and players can wrap their heads around the intended gameplay style. I have not used them, but I know that the Karrakin Trade Baronies book adds more mechanical hooks to the pilots; it still leans on PbtA/FitD style.Beam Saber, as I recall from my one time playing it, uses only Forged in the Dark mechanics. This makes it a bit more mechanically consistent, but also means that if you just don't gel with FitD at all, you're not going to have a good time of it. Also, Beam Saber pushes interpersonal drama and archetypal characters more than I personally wanted; it is pushing for that Gundam feeling, and I'm not always down for Kamille to sperg out just because someone made fun of his name. There are plenty of other mecha systems out there, which all do better or worse depending on what kind of mecha story you want to tell, and how well you mesh with their rulesets. Maybe also look at Battle Century G, which I would class as middle crunch, roughly in the same tier as Lancer, but works a bit differently.
>>97852500My experiences were pretty different, and I don't think play was focused on narrative much at all. It was kind of secondary to clocks and skill check turns, with the players describing more or less what they'd like to achieve and entire large narrative sections being turned into extended skill checks. The system's focus felt like it's heavily geared towards skirmish wargaming, rather than narrative play. But maybe that's something more of a GM thing. One thing I tried when I ran was to do combats with the pilot rules once or twice, the idea being that the pilots were out on foot exploring an abandoned station, but we used mech combat initiative and pilot weapons rules and kind of made up stats for enemies on foot since there wasn't much to work with in the book, but it bombed spectacularly when pilot narrative and mech skirmish rules were mixed and didn't flow well at all, so I agree that the difference throws people off. Out specialist wanted to roll narrative assault to fight, because they had specced hard into it, and our hacker wanted to use the pilot combat rules and mech initiative because they had a weapon and no combat skill triggers, and the two butted heads so much it killed the vibe. I looked at the Trade Baronies RP stuff after but the group felt really l put off by it, and said that it was too restrictive for their character ideas. Tough system to run, for reasons I didn't see coming, considering how simple the actual combat rules are, so nice job on doing that many sessions.

I'm torn between the two to recommend to my GM since he's interested in running either, can anyone actually list some differences and all to help us all decide? Also 4e would be through Foundry VTT and 2e through Roll20.
>>97852050Not really lol, but then again I can run through Dark Heresy (and the other FFG 40k games) rather quickly.
>>97852050Been running the Path of Damnation campaign wiht players who never played WFRP before, they got it quickly, it's nothing complicated if you ever played D&D or CoC.
>>97852032we play ignoring the Advantage rules for trash mob encounters to not bog down the game, saving it for the final "impossible" encounters to kinda abuse the dogpiling and survive encounters that should mathematically wipe us. like sort of put your finger on a scale, final boss mechanicsit wasn't something deliberate, we mostly played 1st ed before that and forgot the Advantages were even there, until deep down into the campaign and facing Chaos Warriors, and it was like "holy shit, we're cooked, where's the manual". so basically, it's optional and up to the players at any given moment if they want to track it or not
I can't give you an objective truth, OP. My group played both but we prefer 4E. My dudes like the advantage system even with the snowballing problem. It makes fights go SO much faster than in 2E. The only thing is that you have to book keep a whole lots of points but It's also pretty easy to do If you have some kind of physical counters. After you get used to the system, adapting 2E stuff to 4E gets really easy. I think there's a shitton of things converted already
>>97847900First of all, I'd rather kill myself than ever run R20 after getting used to Foundry, but whatever, your dm might feel differently.I'd reccomend 4e, but with using whatever 2e splats you can't live without. Especially the mutation book is really nice, and it works fine in 4e. There's also 2 different combat systems in 4e and the newer one is better, but they're both an improvement on 2e.I ran 2e for 6 years before switching to 4e when it released, and it's not a night and day difference or anything, but 4e is a definite upgrade in my opinion, rather than a sidegrade or downgrade like the newer shadowrun editions.>>97848663You can't blame 4e for not being set after the Storm of Chaos. I don't think SoC is even canon anymore. I personally run my game during the end times similar to the vermintide games.

Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome!
