Thread dedicated to Sci-Fi based discussion. 40k need not apply. [\spoiler]How goes your sci-fi setting, anon? I am currently running a Traveller game in a homebrew setting, and am getting lost in the sauce of stellar physics.
Been very interested in Traveller ever since I read some Sci Fi last year (mostly Asimovs Foundation and some of The Expanse)I don't know if I could do the super hard science stuff but I gotta say the appeal is there for space adventures. Might at least try running some adventure books for my friends to see if they're actually interested in the system before I try and brew an entire universe. Or at least a system or two to call my own might be easier to manage
>>97351264Traveller isn't hard sci-fi in the slightest so there's no need to worry about it.Traveller is fun, though, I've run several one shots in the past and will probably try to get a campaign off the ground this year or next, depending on how games are lookin'. Be wary of the current mongoose adventures, some of them are fairly shit.
>>97351748>Be wary of the current mongoose adventures, some of them are fairly shit.Well the classic stuff is pretty easy to carry over right? That's mostly what I've been reading up on and the system hasn't changed terribly much as far as I can tell right (talking directly classic to Mongoose editions, I know there's a D20 out there alongside GURPS that have more drastic changes)
Hey thereI've decided to start a West Marches-style campaign on my LGS. It sounds the perfect style to run for a public setting w/ rotating players, but I myself have never DMed oneAny experiences, tips and advices regarding DM-ing/playing West Marches style games?Or general tips for running games on LGS ? For those unfamiliar with West Marches style, here is what google have to say about it:>Player-Driven Exploration: Players decide where to go and what to explore, venturing into unknown territory from a safe starting town.>Rotating Cast: A large pool of players participates, but different combinations of adventurers form parties for each session, preventing the need for a single regular group.>Sandbox World: The world is a sandbox, with the map and plot emerging as players discover new locations and rumors, rather than being dictated by the GM.>No Fixed Schedule: Sessions occur when players organize themselves, often on a voluntary basis.>Low GM Prep: The Game Master (GM) focuses on creating a world and potential encounters, responding to player choices, rather than crafting complex plots.>Self-Contained Sessions: Adventures are often designed to be resolved in a single session, with storylines evolving over time.Comment too long. >>97350130>You don't get it, do you?>The original post about West MarchesI think its you that don't get it, anon. I'm not obsessed on the veracity of an internet post of 20 years ago. I'm interested in making my own campaign run well>online play made WM perfectly viableIf it works for you, great. I myself am not a big fan of online TTRPG, I tried it a couple of times with my core group (during the pandemic, for instance), but didn't work for me>circumnavigating the whole issue with finding sufficient number of playersLGS started to do TTRPG recently, and their group exclusive to TTRPG already has 119. I think finding players for the most played/famous TTRPG system is going to be just fine
One potential problem I see with some of what you have set up right now is that there is a lack of player agency in terms of what encounters they come across. For example, using your sample run say a group really wanted to try and track down the cannibal settlement. They could explore in the direction they have been seeing the cannibals, or even be explicitly tracking footsteps, but no matter what they do they're no more likely to come across a settlement than if they were just wandering randomly. Each new tile is a 1/12 chance of finding the major settlement, and everything else is irrelevant. You might want to add more explicit room for you to modify how the land/encounters gets generated. For example, you could give yourself the liberty to change what the roll table looks like; if the group is trying to find a settlement and has tools to track one down, then make a settlement role more likely. Another potential issue is the pure randomness could give you some strange results without anything to bound it. You could end with multiple major settlements too close together or a large area with nothing. Even just making it explicit that, for example, two dungeons can't be next to each other, or once there's too many settlements in an area it's off the role table, or there's at least one major encounter for every given area could temper that risk a bit
>>97336568>>97350130The original west marches post claimed to have a rotating cast of 10-14 players, I don't know where the hell you got 122 from.https://arsludi.lamemage.com/index.php/78/grand-experiments-west-marches/
>>97351911I think he's just a shitposting psycho, I don't see where in the original West Marches post it says it was run in a town of 5k people, either.
>>97351862>lack of player agency in terms of what encounters they come acrossNot really. Player agency is SUPER important to me, and I want to take it in consideration as much as possible. Once players encounter something in a hex, I want to make that thing more likely to appear that, to showcase consistency and lead to player decisions (eg: "let's avoid that hex, its full of venomous snakes")In terms of actively locating something, if they have seen/fought cannibals around somewhere and are now actively looking for a settlement (I assume they have informed me of this), I will treat the cannibal settlement as a rumor. Rumors are not necessarily keyed/tied down to a particular hex, but have their odds increased on the area around the rumor. So for instance, I could maybe make all nearby hexes have a 1/6 chance of actually having a cannibal settlement, and probably I would make most of other types of encounter in that area be related to their goal of finding it, potentially containing clues >Each new tile is a 1/12 chance of finding the major settlementIt's actually a 1/64 btw. The table goes from 2 to 12 but its a 2d8 roll, anything 12+ means "nothing is found". A cannibal settlement though would probably fall under the "minor settlement" category (3/64 or ~4.7%, but then again that's a chance of randomly walking into one without previous context)>You might want to add more explicit room for you to modify how the land/encounters gets generatedI mean, I naturally reserve the right to not use the random results, or even not roll at all. Some cases are more expected - for instance, I have a roll for whether a hex contains a river or not, but I also have a rule that if there's a river in a hex, it will expand to an adjacent hex unless it finds a biome where it can ends (a lake, the ocean, etc)I don't think it has to be 100% true to randomness. Such a robust procedure would be hard to both create & run. So I assume the rolls are more like guidelines

Con/Health is a conceptually boring stat that should at the very least be looked at>Don't play DNDyeah I included health retard
>>97350607>but dex still determines your ability to dodge an attack, which has to do with your athletic ability to move your body around quickly. So Dexterity covers reflexes.Meanwhile, Strength covers weightlifting, rock climbing, swimming, long-jumps, high-jumps, grappling, and so on.Having a single data point for Dexterity influencing fitness and then all of these other data points for Strength influencing fitness really makes it seem like Strength+Con would make more sense as the generalized 'fitness' stat. >also, the 10-str 20-dex monk makes no sense in that context eitherA 10-str 20-dex monk already doesn't make much sense in the current context if you're assuming monks are meant to be realistic martial artists, because they wouldn't be able to hurt anyone with their noodle-armed punches. That's why monks usually have the excuse of Ki, or are able to apply Wisdom as a bonus in certain situations. They're already using mystical means in order to jump and punch despite not being traditionally athletic. That would simply continue to be the case.
>>97349336Just like this anon >>97345510 said, death spirals are really thematic for supernatural horror games like CoC and WoD. I could also see them working in a modern ultra-realistic military setting. So they're not objectively bad, but yeah, in the wrong context it's like using a screwdriver as a hammer.
>>97351236No, they're quite bad. Do try to keep up.
>>97351966you are either a dndfag or nogames, opinion discarded.
>>97345045>what alternative do you suggest?Shadow of the Demon Lord cuts the six stats down to four, so it's just Strength, Agility, Intellect and Will. All attributes are desirable for everybody so it's a meaningful tradeoff, and it means things like being a fit and strong mage or thief are actually worthwhile and not trap options. While it's theoretically possible for somebody to be a roid-raging jacked power lifter with horrendous cardiovascular and immune health, vs a tiny Japanese housewife who can't lift 40 pounds but will live to 106 and never gets sick, the separation between CON and STR in fantasy games is largely irrelevant because the fantasy archetypes who have a bunch of one also have the other, Conan does not get winded running half a mile and his heart is stronger than Secretariat's. Fantasy enemies that are really strong are also really tough as well, like dragons, giants, orcs, trolls, vampires, werewolves, etc. Separating Strength from Constitution pretty much just exists as a way to make playing a martial character more difficult, since it means if they want to be strong AND tough they need twice as much ability score luck or investment, while spellcasters are fine having the strength of a commoner but the constitution of a hydra.
Are interspecies pairings allowed in your game?
why tabletop settings have creatures like this. Wild Elves in FR?
I always found it helpful to compare Avatar and Out of the Silent Planet by C. S. Lewis. They share a lot of the same themes and ideas, but the latter handles them way more intelligently and coherently.
>>97340987>People in charge got buttmad that their massive movie had zero cultural impact outside of groups of people who liked and rooted for "The wrong side" so they tried to think of a way to make them look bad/feel remorseful. It's the easiest fucking thing in the world. Have Quaritch receive a message that a rival corporation has found another source, one that is easier to harvest even aside from the fact that there are blue hotties living on top of this one...and have him destroy the message before any of his men can see it because he refuses to pull out and admit defeat.
>>97351869Like I said, they tried doing that but likely didn't understand at the time that Sci-fi like 40k was a thing. And they DEFINITELY didn't predict it and it's style of sci-fi becoming mainstream. Again, my central point in all this is that Avatar as an IP is really weird since it was massive, fucking completely vanished out of the cultural zeitgeist, decided to hibernate for a period of time when the type of sci-fi story that it was trying to tell were at the peak of their cultural relevance, and only decided to try and come back when that type of story started to fall out of fashion.
>>97348675Nigga they coulda just had them have hollow bones like birds and other dinosaurs or had pandora be a low-grav world.Or do like, literally nothing. They're not particularly big as far as an animal goes as to require sci-fi explanations for their size.

I have a bit of an inane question for the peanut gallery. Do you have a favorite thing that you'd never actually play/play as?For example, I just realized that I really fucking love the Samedi/Cappadocian clan/bloodline of Vampire: The Masquerade. But I don't think I'd ever consider playing one, and I'd likely opt to play a Malkavian instead under virtually all circumstances, or a Tremere. Samedi doesn't even register on the list of characters I'd like to play, even when I do have concepts I'd include if I were the ST/GM.
>>97343390I love Warhammer 40,000 but I would never play a game in a store. It's homebrew and small narrative game among friends/family
A necromancer with a lot of undead minions>but muh slow combats>but muh evil>but muh balanceYeah, I know, that's why I never actually played one
>>97343390WoD is full of concepts that sounds cool in theory but would be pain to actually use at the table - half the sample characters in various vampire clanbooks. Mummy (as a cocept). >>97347332Or get bunch of weebs and run it like Zombieland Saga
>>97347332>>97350668Fully agree about WoD. Running a Vamp, werewolf or mage game is hard enough. As much as I like the concept of Leviathan: The Tempest, getting a game for WoD fansplat, especially one I want to play and not run, is likely never going to happen.
>>97351847Try CoD Vamp (Requiem) if you'd like to play a vampire game. CoD system itself is much better than WoD and you don't need to read War and Peace-worth of metaplot to run it. Plus vampires have cool mechanical gimmicks there like predatory aura and lashing out with Beast that work really well for creating narrative moments, and the coolest thing is, it's the players themselves who are going to create them for you as they try to one up each other or their enemies in social settings. Wouldn't recommend it if you're overly invested in WoD lore though, it's deliberately made to have an overall same tone but with snippets of lore that you can customize for your own setting.

It is probably not too controversial to say that the art of modern rulebooks is made with female representation in mind. These women are predominantly filling important roles, such as archmages, military officers, or nobles. But how come there is barely any art that shows them in peril, or at a clear disadvantage? Regardless of their status. There is no shortage of men in peril.Neither in classic nor in modern art.

Lets talk about what makes a player or GM truly great? Is it how a player makes their character, roleplay at the table, a GM who is very descriptive, etc.Or we can share stories about really good players or GMs we met at our own tables.
>>97336416>There's people that always comes late, or doesn't read the group chat, or says they're not coming at the last minute "because they're tired" (while they work 20 hours per week and I can touch 60)...they don't have the balls to say they don't care, or they don't even realize it, for them the game night is just something that is there, if there's something else to do they deem better, they do that without a second thought.I've had to explain this to quite a few gamers, mostly in the context of them being annoyed at not getting invited. Our most serial flake is the kind who will bang on about 'not having the spoons' to sit through D&D, but will have a miraculous recovery when he wants to play video games ordinary something that just so happens to be less effort than a 20 minute drive.Fuck those guys, calling your time and energy 'spoons' to garner sympathy doesnt mean it automatically gets priority over everyone else's. The 'spoons' of the four people you messed around and who's now have to make other plans are never considered, naturally.
>>97344845>not having the spoonsNever heard of the Spoons Theory, I had to google it. The lady who made this shit up had fucking lupus, her body is under siege and she has an excuse. No person who isn’t suffering from a disability or a similar chronic illness has any business invoking this shit seriously, they’re just being lazy and self-centered. Kick them immediately.
>>97347279>No person who isn’t suffering from a disability or a similar chronic illness has any business invoking this shit seriouslyI don't think I've ever seen someone with a genuine disability invoke spoon theory, it's always lazy drama queens and lazy hypochondriacs. Even the original anecdote has a whiff of the 'and then everyone in the carriage clapped' about it. Whole thing feels more like virtuous victimhood than a genuine attempt to be reasonable; "Oh woe is me" it seems to say "So put upon, so deserving of sympathy, how could you possibly hold such a downtrodden little person accountable for wasting your time, oh able bodied hyperborian superman?"Our guy with severe neuralgia was more reliable than the serial flaker before the latter was uninvited.
>>97344439I agree with the sentiment that the GM should get a move on, but I really think heists are such a fucking terrible thing to run in tabletop because they either require intense detailed levels of planning (boring shit that drags on forever) or brute forcing via dumb luck if the GM bothers to run an actual believable scenario. Both of your examples can be done by a good or bad gm. There's nothing wrong with starting the players off in a meeting place getting an assignment for an introductory adventure that'll set the tone for the rest of the campaign, like everything else this can be done poorly or well.Players>On time and pays attention while playing>Memory longer than a single session or at least takes notes to reference>Drive to do stuff, investigate, socialise, gather loot, defeat evil. I keep forgetting to list the manufacturers of the weapons when I give them to my player. I want some fanboy characters, damn it.Which might be hard to get since they have a "fuck corporations" mentality.
>>97349774*playersMinor spelling mistake, its over for me.Militech is for tactical prowess and firepower, Arasaka for maybe range, and what about the corps?
I had a player in 2020 spend his combat turn full autoing, then declared he wanted to reload. I let him but it made me wonder because there's supposed to be the -3 penalty but obviously there's no dice roll. What are you supposed to do, make them reload on the next turn? Same thing with movement, I've had some people run up, do an action at -3, then run away in the same turn with their spare MA. It's not like I want to stop them I just want to know how all these are supposed to interact.
>>97349774>>97349793Actually I think Arasaka is adaptability. The two Arasaka weapons in Black Chrome are the weeping reaver which can have 3 bonus effects (and can mix and match them and more are possible) and the prototype rifle which is ridiculously overpriced but would give you an extremely weak railgun if you needed it. And the bullpup rifle in Gunsmas can use any type of ammo even though it's exotic. Sovoil/Techtronika could be defined by dependability in brutal conditions. Techtronika is actually a subsidy of San Francisco Techtronica which was a microwaver developer but they all died in the 4CW.Malourian Arms and Tsunami Arms weapons would be the kind to be way over engineered and have limited release runs.Your Militech seems pretty spot-on. I could see them competing with Gunmart for American patriotism and tactical designs. Except Militech is actually good while Gunmart is flimsy.

So, is the KDS worth it now? Thinking of buying the core game + gambler's chest key, but does it come with features to actually make running the game with setup and shit easier? I've heard that the tracking for gambler's chest shit is nightmarish without scribe.
>>97351774I would say that right now, playing on the simulator itself is mostly okay (moving characters, rolling dice, readability, etc). There are still a lot of bugs and whatnot (desu I don't really find it excusable, but it is a small team so I am trying to give them some grace), but for PotDK I would probably recommend using Scribe in addition to the simulator. A lot of people have brought up issues of things not writing properly to character sheets automatically, I think I've heard about showdowns also not setting up properly because it doesn't check all the appropriate cards, etc. etc.
