I am back, with another quandary of folklore meeting reality. The "skinwalker". A creature so internet-famous that I am sure most of you groaned when you read my previous sentence. What I find fascinating is how utterly divorced the pop culture concept of the skinwalker is from the actual mythological origin. As we discussed earlier, "hungry dead" myths tend to be somewhat consistent across cultures, even if the exact specifics vary wildly. Someone dead returns, with a hunger for life essence, be it blood or breath or brains, which is the only thing that can sustain its un-life. Straightforward, and fairly accurate to the truth, as far as we understand it. But the skinwalker is different. It is often depicted as being a sort of doppelganger, or mimic creature. An inhuman thing that lurks the woods and attempts to draw victims out into the dark through mimicry of questionable quality. The truth however is quite different. Skinwalkers are human. Skin-walking is a magical practice, one not even unique to the Dene People that we get the term from. It's not even unique to the Americas. To wear the pelt of an animal in order to take on its qualities, or even its form, is a classic magical practice found in almost every animistic or shamanistic culture. Eurasia is full of such beliefs. Skinwalking is considered highly dangerous, and there are many stories of shamans who skinwalk becoming "lost" to the animal, which I believe likely led to the misunderstanding that has created the modern doppelganger interpretation of the skinwalker. What do you think the truth of the matter is? How do you believe this distortion took place? Have you encountered creatures that match the proper or pop-culture definition of Skinwalker? After playing both the original Shandalar and the 2016 update version I've come to the conclusion that magic was just more fun in 1995 when it was more loose and relaxed. The kinds of decks you go up against in the 2016 version are so much more ruthless about shutting down every play you make that the only way to compete is to be an even more obnoxious dickhead and make sure they never get a chance to do anything. Every victory was bitter and spiteful in a way that I never felt with the older simpler Magic cards.
