I have a bit of an inane question for the peanut gallery. Do you have a favorite thing that you'd never actually play/play as?

For example, I just realized that I really fucking love the Samedi/Cappadocian clan/bloodline of Vampire: The Masquerade.

But I don't think I'd ever consider playing one, and I'd likely opt to play a Malkavian instead under virtually all circumstances, or a Tremere. Samedi doesn't even register on the list of characters I'd like to play, even when I do have concepts I'd include if I were the ST/GM.

An AD&D 2e Paladin.

Even if I didn't end up at a table with a DM trying to make me fall, I think I'd end up doing it myself. I'm too rash and impulsive for the class, I think, to live up to the morality required of it.
>>
Over Christmas at about 3am I suddenly had the coolest concept for a cleric of loviatar who I now desperately want to play, but I'm pretty sure any campaign would drop me the moment I said "cleric of loviatar."

Just let me be a little edgelord as a treat
>>
>>97343390
I like the carefree brutes that just bulldoze through their problems willy-nilly. I never play one, because everything I'd want to demolish is either far out of my character's league or would create 10x more problems for the party than it would solve.
>>
>>97343390
I love the idea of Promethean: the Created but it sounds impossible to play with most groups: you'd need literal theater kids that also want to play as a Frankenstein, Golem, etc. on a Pinocchio becomes a real boy quest
>>
>>97343390
Man I would love to play Night's Black Agents, but my group would be totally incapable of it. Delta Green was enough of a disaster that it's also gone in my "never again," pile.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

It has absolutely nothing to do with house rules and everything to do with the numerous glaring errors.
Having exactly zero XP is also very telling, because even if they were authentic, you've never once played with them, and if those are the only examples you have, then you've clearly never played at all.
>>

I'm really curious, can you tell us about what house rules your DM was specifically using that are reflected on your sheets?

Jesus. Has nuhammer really been torturing us for so long that they felt the need to release a new version of a primarch that already had a model?
>>

Yes. Twice.
>>
>>97345624
Sort of. One is the 40k plastic model, and the other is the Forgeworld Heresy one. I'd have to check but I'm pretty sure FW has a model for all the primarchs but 40k only has the 4 daemon primarchs, Roboute, and The Lion.

What did you have in mind? I think the new one looks good. I'd never fucking pay for it though. $200+ is fucking stupid for any model.
>>
>>97345624
Yes. It's so the retard consumers who are obsessed with this particular super villian keep buying another one. If they just had the one figure, most would just buy one and then stop, something that would be bad for GW sales. Repeatedly releasing different versions means GW gets a continuous income (until the retards wise up they are being scammed and quite GW products altogether)

New year new me edition

>Cyberpunk 2020 vs. Cyberpunk RED?
Cyberpunk 2020 is the second edition of the Cyberpunk TTRPG that focuses on simulation gameplay and has a black trenchcoat aesthetic.

Cyberpunk RED is the fourth edition of the Cyberpunk TTRPG that is set after Cyberpunk 2020 following the Fourth Corporate War, focuses on more balanced gameplay and is more streamlined but has less content.

You can discuss Shadowrun here too because I also feel bad for those guys.

I am not confident you are doing this on purpose so I'm trying not to chew out your entrails, but the answer to the problem of 'people keep wanting to cut systems' being 'you should cut systems' is textbook begging the question and I'm about a minute away from actually fucking tweaking over it.

Without the ability to make new stuff, Tech is just a slow Fixer with a bunch of extra skill points and the ability to fix their armor for a fight and no social skills.

>Without the ability to make new stuff, Tech is just a slow Fixer with a bunch of extra skill points and the ability to fix their armor for a fight and no social skills.
This has a really simple solution: Don't put Tech in core. Only introduce it alongside its complex subsystem.

Why are you so salty about people critiquing Red? I don't even agree with that anon about moving invention out of core, but jesus get a grip.

>Without the ability to make new stuff, Tech is just a slow Fixer with a bunch of extra skill points and the ability to fix their armor for a fight and no social skills.

You're really underselling how good raising all your Tech skills is. Anytime the party faces a problem that requires technical knowledge, the Tech can ace it easy. Fixing armor in the field situational, but a god send in a drawn out, combat heavy gig. Makes Tech/Medtech really good because you can heal Armor and HP.

Fabrication is meh, but has its uses like putting a couple points in to mass produce cocaine or rockets. Invention is ok but gets cucked by the time/money it takes to upgrade more expensive items. Still being able to upgrade everyone's LAJ is worth putting a few points into. Even without Invention, Tech is still one of the better Roles.

I think others ITT were right that Invention feels like a crutch for the writers when they design a bad item. Invention lets you circumnavigate the game's autistic balance rules and fix shit gear whilst also not having to deal with the scarcity horsehit by adding strong items with a low price.

Feels like forever since we had one of these.

After a nightmare I had last night, I've come to a conclusion that zombie media has been doing it wrong. Zombies are way WAY more fucking terrifying when you can't tell someone has turned until you interact with them. Bonus points if they hopelessly cry for help early on during the infection.
>To avoid friendly fire and to avoid hiding from help you have to make yourself known to potential threats
>Anyone sent in to clean up the situation is much more likely to shoot first and ask questions never
>Mercenary responders can be willing to even kill each other to claim killed competitors as zombie heads taken which puts you in crossfire and endangers any well-meaning responders
Also exploding zombies need keratinous skin growths for shrapnel spikes.

The zombie film series I watched in the nightmare was scarier than the shit in the nightmare actually trying to kill me.
>>
>>97345114
The cool old conspiracy that already got adapted into numerous movies and books? Good and very cool. The cringe new conspiracy that is talked about on 4chin and that everyone and their grandma saw on Fox News? Bad and shallow.
>>
>>97346884
Most conspiracies are shit either because they're true like the smoking industry conspiring to conceal the fact that that shit causes cancer or because the people that believe them are insufferable assholes that act in the worst fucking ways possible in furtherance of their tinfoil beliefs.

The rare exceptions are the ones where the entire thing is a joke like birds being invented by the CIA to spy on us or shit like flat earth where the belief generally has no real world way to act on it that impacts other people and we get to laugh at a bunch of mentally ill people as they rave like lunatics and occasionally get punched by an astronaut or blow themself up doing a DIY rocket launch.

WH prices in the US are entirely about profit maximisation as a monopoly with a luxury good and not at all related to actual cost. Thinking that a local factory would decrease prices is ludicrous. If anything they'd slap a "made in the us" on it and increase prices. It might improve stock/availability though, but I suspect some of the stock issues are deliberate fomo-building from GWs US division.
In short WH is expensive in the US because the retards there are willing to pay those prices.

>>97334565
It's called railroading.
It's when the DM has decided what happens beforehand and pretends the player has agency apart from the tactical combat decisions, and also the DM isn't allowing his players to be creative enough to come up with other ways to get to the story beat.
In my old party, this type of shit would happen a lot. And I'd come up with a solution and my DM would shoot me down. Luckily my new group will actually make lists like follows:
>Is there a window we can climb into
>Can we wait for someone or some thing to come out/go in and ambush them
>Lets go hire a thief
>Lets go find a spell scroll to unlock
>Use stone shape on the wall
>Lets dig under the tower and break into it from underneath
>I set fire to the door
>The fighter chops down the door with an axe
>Heat metal to weaken the hinges so we can pull it out
>I knock on the door, pretending to deliver a message or package from a rival wizard. What package and message? Eeem, I'll put my immovable rod in and tell the wizard his rival says to stick it up his ass and then beg for mercy throughout the interaction.
>>
>>97347319
If that's in the order you want to try those things then sorry to tell you man but nobody's opening to your knock after you tried to fucking burn the door down and then take it down with an axe.
>>
>>97345119
The suggestion is that you can't work with the failure of your player as a GM. But I think there are plenty of ways to deal with it. I'll keep to dnd vocabulary:
Study and practice costs money for reagents and inks and shit. You also need downtime because you use spell slots on the appropriate level when practicing. Some spells require rare reagents / materials to learn that will take some adventuring to obtain.
You need to find information on the spell, or have instruction from one who mastered it to attempt it. Experimentation without information or instruction will be more costly in time and reagents, and have a higher chance of failure. You can't attempt to learn a spell without information or instruction unless you have seen it being cast, or you can realistically argue that two or more spells you already know should give you enough insight to start the process.

In general, given the risks involved, populated areas don't take kindly to magical teachings and experimentation within their communities. Depending on local laws and customs you might face fines, exile, mob justice, the stink eye, theft/espionage from competitors, general displeasure, whatever. This is part of why wizard towers are a thing.

Failure to learn the spell can result in backfired spells. You might:
>take some damage
>turn yourself into a newt for 1d4 days
>block your chakras causing you to lose access to 2 spell slots of the level of the spell
> literally blow your hand off
>cause you to become "wild magicked" for 1d4 weeks
>a thundercloud follows you constantly inside and outside causing you to be soaked and take 1d4 lightning damage every 2 hours until dispelled
>you create a rift and 1d6 void imps enter and attack you

>Anon, I promise you, if it were meaningfully advantageous for us to be eating placentas, we would have been doing so for a long time with elaborate reasons to justify it
Not that anon, but they're right that placenta is superfood insofar as all "long pig" is superfood. You generally don't get more essential nutrients in nature than your own species cause you're made up of all the shit you need.

The reason cannibalism isn't more common is obviously the risk of disease is high as fuck with cannibalism vs other foods and also eating your own is a good way to not effectively grow a population and therefore pass on traditions.

That said, while you can mitigate the disease risk from consuming placenta to a large degree nowadays, I would still suggest anyone that wants to pop a fucking Flintstones chewable instead unless you're in a fucking starvation situation or something. It's not something most would need to do and it's not exactly socially normal to want to do so. Shit's a free country, but you might want to talk to a shrink about why that shit sounds like a good idea.

Ultima Underworld 1 for the perennial classic, Dungeon Master 2 for the atmosphere.

So it's at least 1999. Why am I playing half a decade plus old games?

He's the one who established the tradition, tho. Therefore, the best Mandalore.
Also, consider our non-Sith puppet Mandalores:
>Boba Fett
>Din Djarin (maybe)
>Bo-Katan (maybe)
With that competition, Mandalore the Ultimate becomes the clear winner.

Coruscant has been built up and over so much that nobody, and I mean nobody, knows what is down there.

There are over five thousand levels, built up from the crust. Coruscant long ago got so deep that it started hitting the mantle. It's effectively the same as 40k's Terra, but Terra has been done for about 40000 years. Coruscant was already fifty levels (and some of these levels are skyscraper height and more, they're entire ecosystems) deep and a complete planet wide city a hundred thousand years before Ep4. It's only gotten more built up since. The entire world requires constant oxygen processors and atmospheric regeneration, satellites to direct heat, and millennia upon millennia of systems built over and atop each other designed to keep the planet livable and not a co2 ruined rock. It doesn't even have the capability to provide its own oxygen, hence super-oxygenating algae are strategically located across the surface.

Even with all that, if weather regulation fucks up just a bit, then you get megastorms big enough to ruin a planetary shield and rip the atmosphere wide open for invasion.

Coruscant is fucked up.

that sounds so radical. a single turbolift can go far enough to get all the genres and themes of sci-fi done in one ride.
