Recently I have been playing a lot of solo OSR. I've played using various systems, some intended for solo play while others I use emulation tools and a small party off characters to simulate the game. (It's good fun for a winter evening in.)

In my solo games I have created a small gauntlet as a sort of funnel for my characters. They must be able to best a giant rat in combat, bypass a weak dart trap in a treasure chest (full of randomized level 1 treasure,) Kill a single screeching bat, an encounter with two hobgoblins (Which can be killed our coerced,) and either kill or outrun a zombie (Killing it bestows the reward of a +1 Morningstar!). Finally, optionally players can attempt to kill a giant spider (And if they succeed, they gain access to a second randomized treasure trove.)

Oddly enough, when running lone characters through this small gauntlet... Only two characters have managed to survive the whole thing. A fighter and a rogue, and both of them died shortly upon exiting.

If you were to run randomly generated characters through this gauntlet, one at a time, what would be some tips for surviving such a dungeon?

Also, how does solo OSR work in the context of exploration? Do you randomly generate dungeons? As i don't know how you could run a dungeon module without semi spoiling it by looking at the maps?

This post jogged my memory about a fighting game that also had a card aspect.

Can't remenber its name though.

I feel like this could help with another system I have , the main idea was that it is a 3v3 , 2 players are normal , but the other 1 is in a kind of beatemup.

So like I had this mechanic were you can change which joystick to use but also you can't make any motion imputs , just normal movement , all the action imputs in joystick A get transformed into imputs for the AI beatemup.

This is a way to both help with movement as well as just making it so new players can "cheat " motion imputs by storing them.

But maybe transforming it into cards might not be a bad idea , were the 2nd joystick is were the cards turn up.

the basic types will still exist:
Entities, Memes, Structures (like mtg creatures, sorceries, artifacts etc)

The typing done in both pokemon and magic is very loosely defined, for example a card being blue (mtg) or green (pokemon) is only a very loose indication of what its interaction scope might be in-game, mtg especially is filled with exceptions, and pokemon doesn't even try (their typing is arbitrary, like YGO).

In frenopolis, the color-typing is defined in terms of the board itself. so if you know a card's color, you will know exactly its interaction scope.

the only change here is I don't want to limit myself to "technology" themed or loosely related images for the blue color (for example). The blue color will be any image/meme that looks like it has an effect that operates in/between the Earth and Air elements, which correspond to zones (Archive, Void), and types (Structures, Memes, Narrative).

thematically, this card probably would have been a purple (now silver) card (water and air elements), but functionally it strikes me as a yellow card (water and earth elements), as it's manifesting something material from "being".

It also could have been a blue (formerly technology) card (air and earth elements), by projecting a structure from the void.

Owl can be extremely powerful and "Want" to help the silent striders, but the things the silent striders need to survive are things Owl can't provide without violating the rules Owl operates by.
To make things more complicated, most spirits can't even comprehend that they're actually limited or that the things they can't do are good or necessary in any way. Infantry are more defensive now, and it’s a marked improvement vs pre faq where infantry was mostly so bad that comp lists didnt bother taking it outside a few armies and the necessary tax.
The objectives meanwhile simply add victory points for turns held. The core game has and continues to revolve around victory points, where you score by killing enemy units and a few other niche things (capturing banners for example). It’s definitely nothing close to 40k in terms of how stripped of flavor it is in favour of comp fags.

I've never heard of crack letting a man shrug off three rounds of .308 like it was a BB gun. I know it didn't deflect off the armor, when I was checking the corpse to make certain he was dead I found the holes, my bullets punched clean through his scrap armor.

He's dead now. Chopped the body up and put it in the furnace, full blast. My ancestor once dealt with a man who came back from a bloody mess, but burning the body to a crisp kept him from coming back for good. Not sure if this guy was the same but he's finished.

EXPEDITION is a ~1880s era, Jules Verne-inspired retro-futurist, underground blood soaked adventurescape.
It is a Skirmish wargame. Two players with their own expeditions, on a hexgrid map, explore & fight each other for victory and profit.

3 versions of the rules exist, 2 of which have been playtested. The main one is 2e, to be found :

Are tripods technology or living beings? If they're going to be in the "hyperborean critters" book, I imagine they have to be alive in some way, or at the very least maybe fully wild ones. Maybe things like the Combine from Half-Life, where the tripods used by the hyperboreans are weaponized and techified organic tripods?

To me they resemble the 1906 versions, the ones with the big eyes, so that could make sense.
Alternatively, it could be entirely mechanical but still acting wild because the first layer is a weird place.
