Thread dedicated to Sci-Fi based discussion. 40k need not apply. [\spoiler]How goes your sci-fi setting, anon? I am currently running a Traveller game in a homebrew setting, and am getting lost in the sauce of stellar physics.
>>97354291You've just described stars Without Number space combat.
>>97356779I'll have to look back into it. I started reading the book then dropped it when I realised it was d20.
>>97353818>1. FTL travel is only possible with a real sentient person controlling the ship. Don't try brain in a jar, it backfires. How does that work in setting? Fluff-wise I mean? Just interested rather than going to give you shit about it.
>>97358491It only uses d20 for attack rolls, everything else is 2d6. From what I remember (it's been awhile) it could easily be shoved into something like traveller relatively easily. But, traveller (post mongoose) doesn't have the kind of complicated space ship combat you're talking about either. You haven't had to worry about vectors and shit in a sci-fi game since probably the eighties.
>>97358704Admittedly skills are 2d6 but I more meant it's class-and-level, D&D derived mechanics. I really prefer my systems skill-based and with a curve.24XX has a game called Super Bandit which is kind of close to what I'm after, so I'm going to start hacking at that (as well as SWN) and see what I come up with. >>97358343It used to be automatic, but post remaster you must make an additional check. It's up to you how you want to handle it, but I think the automatic grab is better for players. The added check means you can get restrained and if the monster is actually built to grab people (it will be), that means taking entire turns away from people fairly often. Yes, it means they can miss too, but most creatures are set up to see critical success more often, especially if they aren't mooks. Forgoing the check also has the side effect of buffing player side summoning, since you can summon plus grab creatures and guarantee debuffs if they get lucky and hit.
>>97358291Anyone with access to a familiar can get a Greensting scorpion to scout for them. +8 size to stealth, +4 racial to both per/stealth, before your skill ranks and per/stealth being class skills for it. If you add the Figment archetype it can take the Skilled evolution twice by level 7 and get another +8 in both per/stealth (but must be within 100 ft). At lv 7 with maxed ranks and before any magic items it can have +33 to stealth and +22 to perception. If you take Skill Focus with the feat it gains from losing the mindless trait you land att +25 perception. And if it gets discovered and killed it will reappear after some sleep.

2eIf a player detects a trap, whether non-magical or magical, do they learn how to disable it and how it triggers as well? Or is it just they learn of its presence? How would they determine its affects and how to disable it?
>>97358933They know enough to make a Disable a Device check at least, although how much more than that kind of depends on the hazard. The relevant rules here are (as listed here https://2e.aonprd.com/Rules.aspx?ID=2846):Detecting a Hazard:>"Every hazard has a trigger of some kind that sets its dangers in motion. For traps, this could be a mechanism like a trip wire or a pressure plate, while for an environmental hazard or haunt, the trigger may simply be proximity. When characters approach a hazard, they have a chance of finding the trigger area or mechanism before triggering the hazard. "Later in that same block of text:>"Anyone who succeeds [a secret Perception check against the hazard's Stealth DC] becomes aware of the hazard, and you can describe what they notice."The first quote specifies that they're rolling to detect the trigger area or mechanism, and the second clarifies that a successful perception check makes them aware of the hazard, with the GM describing what the character actually notices in the world. Nowhere does it say that they learn what the hazard *is*, although it's often obvious (e.g. the mechanics of a hidden spike pit are pretty clear once you've noticed it), and when it's not I imagine a relevant Recall Knowledge would probably tell them more about it.What's clear, however, is that they've definitely found it, and they can make a roll to disable it. The rules for disabling hazards are a little further down:Disabling a Hazard:>"A character must first detect a hazard (or have it pointed out to them) to try to deactivate it."Comment too long. Travel log #4 [Seattle, Washington State]-[*7/10]>>>>>Pros>An actual population centre for us, first one I've really been to since Toronto and almost getting murdered in Milwaukee.>This place is thriving with life of every kind. Even if I'm kind of a dinosaur, my companion was able to bring me into the thick of it. It should be easy for any willing to play the Camarilla line to set up shop here comfortably.>Just about every sort of clan has some present, most of them recent. If a fledgling needed to seek out their elders on relatively equal footing, you could do worse.>That view across the water is something.>>>>>Cons>Currently there are ( 4 ) competing factions vying for the title of leadership in the city as a total gongshow recently transpired. Old Money pioneers, new money Sabbat adjacent technophiles, actual Sabbat from Mexico and Anarch exiles from California. Bit of a pain in doing introductions, and the rivalry is murderous. The Trems, Kuei, and Nos are also serious issues, though at least the Nos lent us a safe place to spend the day. Good bunch, I know you keep tabs here so you won't hear a bad word out of me. >Despite the population there is an absolute gongshow of Loups nearby, beside a thriving hunter population apparently.>Despite recently exploding, this town is like to explode again.>A cult of Jugalo Malks tried recruit Mèo-Mèo and when she refused they tried kidnapping her. Mèo-Mèo also explained what a 'Jugalo' is and I'm... Well I- Never liked clowns.Outside of the awkwardness of repeated introductions, staring into the deadpan face of inhumane psychopaths (with somehow the Sword of Caine Lasombra die-hard being the least disturbing) vying for control of a whole city, and the Clown incident... Not bad. I certainly prefer the seedier side of town to whatever the wannabe princes are doing. Although I could never live here. Getting a good routine going. Down to Oregon next to see a... Friend? Maybe? If he made it, of course.
>>97358153Hm. No doubt the Loup would be happy to do the same. Such abomination don't form unless someone tries very hard to force something against very intrinsic natures. Or worse, takes the gifts of the Loups through violence. Mercifully, the inverse of this... 'Abomination' doesn't happen. Your childe will either be savable or will expire. Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. >>97357375>I am thinking of that room having a ladder up to a hatch right by the entrance of the dungeon - this being the lower level - to cut escaping players off.I'm not sure I understand how a potential escape route might serve to cut the PCs off. Are you suggesting the dungeon inhabitants have reinforcements up there who will come down? Or is the idea that PCs will not find the ladder/not think to use it to flee if they do find it, and the undead will thus use it to get to the exit before the players and maul them there?Anyway, as long as it's discoverable I can't personally see a huge issue with it as long as you're okay with the PCs using it to escape faster if they find it, instead. Multiple passages between levels is ideal.
>>97358748You're not very intelligent
>>97356147>>97356150primarily, the loot increase is only for magic items, not gold. this will give them a gold sink in having to get many items identified or scrounge up scrolls. experimentation can still be used, but a scroll or identify spell is immediate and thorough, without the risk of being cursed. that's my thought anyway. maybe I've been playing too much POWDER and shattered pixel dungeon.

>>97355518>>97354184PTA and PTU (which is based on PTA) are a total slog. You basically need tools, because there's so much fucking crunch. The powerscaling gets pretty insane too, since trainers can potentially learn how to use moves like Pokemon do.You can play Pokerole instead, which is much less cumbersome, and takes inspiration from Storyteller system, but you might need to be ready to improvise and homebrew some things.
>>97356918pokerole is pretty promising, I'm not looking for a full package just a startpoint I can simplify further to introduce the concept of rpgs to 10-year-olds. PTA, PTU, Oddysee and PTR yeah they seem too complex for that.
>>97357118Part of the issue with PTA/PTU is that the math tries to resemble the video games too much. It just bogs everything down with bookkeeping, and makes generating new things laborious.Pokerole is simple. Attribute+Stat=Dice Pool and roll for successes is the type of thing. It's meant for more fast and loose adventuring, with a style closer to the manga, and where you can control the scale of the game as a GM by using the sort of tier system for what trainers are capable of doing.

>>97355526Rangers is pretty solid. I can chuck up some of the books in newvola for you if you want to check it out. I also recommend looking at En Garde, that's in the osprey games trove. Fantasy stuff and campaign rules are a little simplistic. You can still game out stuff like the fight for Balin's Tomb, your average Conan fight, or samurai/swashbuckling movie really easily with it. Mechanically the game is fast, relatively simple without being brain-dead, and it has fun blind-bidding in combat.>>97356868>I think not being bog-standard fantasy is a cons for most of the people...It's more that it's very expensive outside the loss-leading starter, the models don't really go with anything else because they deliberately chose a stupid scale, it doesn't encourage the kind of exciting tables that get people to make convention games, nor is it well-distributed.
