Everyone I know who watches Fatt Coville videos is a fucking terrible GM. I've never fully watched one and I am widely considered the best GM out of all 3 groups I'm part of. I am regularly requested to run campaigns. People borderline fall asleep in the games others run. There's also no tension because they know that these Coville acolytes will fudge rolls until all PCs survive the battle.

If you're a good GM, it's an inmate talent you can hone over time. You're born that way. If you aren't, then no amount of shitty advice is going to make up for your lack of talent. It just is what it is. This idea that everyone should "try" DMing is retarded. The idea that anyone can be good at it? lolno. Its like some fat divorced on who suddenly decides he's gonna become a famous author. Fat chance. Most people fucking suck at GMing. Hell, most of them suck at playing, but at least in that case the game depends less on them.

It's a shame this thread is made by some subhuman shitposter because there is a point here that I agree with. GMing, in a sense, is a talent. Not everyone can do it. Sure, it's also a skill that can be honed, but you need a certain baseline of capability to start GMing at all. I'm not entirely sure what that talent consists of, though I think atleast 50% of it is being intelligent. If you are stupid, chances are you're a shit GM. But then again, I also know some smart people who make for dreadful GMs, albeit for different reasons.
>>
>>97232339
So wait, /tg/ has MULTIPLE mod-protected redditors spamming the board?
>>
>>97238028
>You're telling a story together and everything the GM does should be in service of a more interesting story
More to the point, it's more realistic. If the guy who's plans you've foiled all game crits you and the crit table makes him beef it it's lame. Inb4 "just decide what he does you're the GM!": No. I'm not deciding every little interaction. I'm here to roll dice and tables too, so whoever says this can stuff this line so far up their ass they burp its flavor.
>>97235121
Btw dramatic rerolls and improv mechanics are literally the two advantages TTRPG has over video games. If I wanted to play a fun world where anything could happen with my friends and it have near perfect rules, I could easily find a minecraft modpack that fits the bill. Or just play Terraria again.
>>
>>97238671
DESU, even if it's true that some people are just utter gobshite at it, I still prefer they at least try to learn from either experience or from people that have sensible advice instead of staying cloistered in these threads acting bitter over their supposed lack of talent and parroting bad advice to one another like a crab bucket. It's like artwork and AI. There are plenty of people out there that have neither the talent nor discipline to become good at it, and that's fine. But that doesn't make LLMs a replacement for art, it just makes LLMs a different avenue for image creation. I'd rather a poor GM that's willing to learn from mistakes and accept advice over the shitposters on reddit and /tg/ that act like know-it-alls despite never playing games anymore.

I always get to play what i want to play, the trick is thinking about the character concept AFTER reading the setting primer and the allowed chargen options (and after rolling stats if the DM wants randomized attributes instead of point buy).

A fundamentally monstrous creature (eldritch horror, biblical angel, sapient ooze, etc., something that clearly isn't humanoid or common-animal shaped) that disguises itself as a human but has a really poor understanding of how humanoids think and behave. The narrative draw would be (poorly) learning about humanity, while the combat draw would be playing a giant monster.
For all the goofy backstories and character identities modern DMs and GMs allow, it's rather disappointing how few of them allow nonhumanoid characters, and those that do tend not to care much about the rules of the game in the first place. Most of them won't even allow such a creature trapped in a human body (basically, just a mechanically normal character with a weird backstory), though playing a downgrade would be a copout to begin with. I can't really blame them though, as I myself wouldn't let someone play that sort of character in my usual campaigns (I did host a "players play the monsters in a dungeon and fight off adventurers" game once though, which was great). Perhaps one day, I too will get to play in a "monster party" game

If we're talking about characters the typical D&D campaign is designed to handle though, then playing a stereotypical rogue would be nice sometime. Nothing particularly special there, just a guy that's really good at being sneaky. Most games I play in tend not to care about stealth or subtlety in general, so I've somehow never played one in the past decade. Hopefully, an opportunity to change that will arise sometime.

In most games I play a character made for that game. Maybe take some things from an existing character and tweak to fit. Probably the only time I didn't was when i played Lost Mine of Phandelver. Don't really think being on-theme mattered much in that game.

Back in the day I've had a friend, who played this guy. He was a wizard school dropout and a huge chuunibyou. One day he decided to dress up in black armor, put on a spiked helmet and name himself after a random mangled latin word he half-remembered from a lecture. Thus was born the evil overlord lord Gastron, who set out into the world to build his evil empire.
Immediately he met our characters - the actually evil party, who decided to make him our leader and humor his delusions, because we've thought it would be funny

The campaign fizzled out after like 3 sessions, so we didn't get far, but I've always wanted to emulate him and play that character myself

Worldbuilding is a bottomless well. The more you worldbuild, the more you realise how shallow most settings really are. The more you worldbuild, the more you realise that it is a never-ending endeavour because you can always add just one extra detail. This is especially true if you research real cultures, language, and history. Also a warning: have some restraint. It is very easy to begin a never-ending worldbuilding spiral. It feels like work, it is work, but it might serve no purpose.

Practice the Iceberg Theory: You should know 90% of the world, but only 10% should ever appear on actual RP. The 90% exists only to give the 10% weight. If you find yourself researching the crop rotation cycles of a province your protagonist will never visit, you’ve likely crossed into the bottom of the iceberg.

When you look at real-world history, you realize that nothing exists in a vacuum. A simple choice—like a character eating a bowl of spicy noodles—is actually a web of complexity from agriculture, trade routs, culture, linguistics, sociology, science, history.

The very words you use have a backstory.

When you use a word like Duke (or Duque), you aren't just using a synonym for "leader"; you are dragging 2,000 years of Roman military history (dux), Latin evolution, and Carolingian feudalism into your fictional world. If your world doesn't have a "Rome," how can it have a "Duke"?

You either have to accept that you are translating the story to a modern audience (very easy and common and even recommended solution), made up a backstory for why Dukes coincidentally are called as such in-universe, or invent a whole new title.

Once you see these, you can never un-see them and they are EVERYWHERE. Here are a few words that often "break" worldbuilding if you're being strictly logical and don't use "translation" as a device:

Draconic law: Named after an Athenian Greek law reformer.

unless you want to go down the route of deriving words for all of these things/concepts then accepting them as translations for things is far easier

Is World Anvil worth the price?
I'm asking as both a GM (World of Darkness, Mekton, Cyberpunk, occasionally D&D, recently Maid RPG, Call of Cthulhu) and as an aspiring writer.
Like, sure it's the price of a Netflix sub but I'm wondering if anybody here has paid for it and if you think you got good value out of it. Bonus points if you can tell me which tier you got.

You're allowed to "show off" in general, you won't fall for doing things with a flourish. You just shouldn't act for the purposes of looking cool, you aren't allowed to go make a big monster attack a city so you can stop it and look like a hero for doing it or whatever. You can be as cool as you want, but you can't go around trying to get a nice big reputation for personal profit.

But yes, the reasoning here is also entirely correct, if you're doing it for a good reason its fine.

Don't bother trying to make a character that "realistic." You're playing a fictional fantasy character in a fictional fantasy game. Make it a mix of characteristics from characters you like.
This applies to male characters too btw.

>That encourages a highly pragmatic, practical lifestyle and outlook, as well as either discouraging empathy (because you don't want to think about the feelings of the orcs you're killing), or simply doesn't care about it most of the time
Based on my experiences with combat soldiers who routinely are exposed to life-threatening situations, there's also a 100% chance that the adventurer would be a massive slut. Not because they're a woman, but because basically EVERYONE who gets into that situation, where you could die in any day and you know it turns into a massive slut when they're somewhere safe. You end up just living for that day and barely considering the long view, if at all.

But it's not ok for a man to depict a woman as an invertate slut, even if it's a logical consequence of the situation she finds herself in.

First of all Merry Christmas.

That took a lot of restraint not to do, I wonder if the players can even fathom how vulnerable their characters were. Or if they could imagine their characters making the same realization.

Relating to before, if I don't hear a peep from them by Monday I'll need to push for an actual convo about expectations. I'm didn't expect them to have answered before Christmas, but when I lay a month (or more) of downtime at their feet I'm gonna be left confused if no one uses it for anything. And some of them have brought up things they'd wanna do, like helping some rescued NPCs get home. It's not stuff that has to be done during the actual session (that we have 4 hours of, every 2 weeks...)

>Nale's goal is to break the last gate
that's the task he was given, but whether he actually plans to do it for the guys who barged in and threatened him is still unknown

Merry Christmas Elan, your present is your dead brother.

Team OotS already know that Sabine is working with the Directors, and their fuckery with Elf's soul directly contributed to the destruction of a gate. It doesn't take many braincells to rub together to figure out that an infernally empowered Nale and Sabine showing up out of the blue probably has something to do with the Directors and their unknown-to-the-team schemes, and these schemes do not align with team Good(ish). When you throw in the fact that Nale is probably going to give away a lot more than he should in the next few strips because he is Nale and can't go 10 seconds without running his mouth, this move is not the best one for accomplishing the goal of blowing up the gate.

That said, if I give an ounce of credit to both Nale and Rich:
1. This approach might not be the brightest, but it is the sort of narcissistic and questionably thought out plan that Nale has a history of preferring. Not quite as complicated as usual, but close enough to his MO that it feels in character even if it is kinda dumb.

2. One of the first things Nale asked to the Directors was whether he would be punished for failure. His overriding concern may be surviving, not winning, and so long as he puts up a good show he may well not care if the Order gets tipped off and does something clever to shut down his inevitable betrayal so long as he survives afterwards.

3. If Nale is intending to betray the Directors, then this approach is actually a really good way of fucking over team Infernal without giving away his intentions.

tl;dr Yes this move is bad for winning, but it a very Nale style bad way of winning, and Nale may not care or even intend that this is the case.

What happened to Belkar? Haven't read since forever.

He learned how to fake character development i.e. learning how to fake empathy and a conscience and overall acting like more of a team player so he won't be punted from the group. And then to his horror, said fake character development slowly turned into real character development

thanks, I thought it was probably something like that.

>The situation you are creating is this: could you slap this on a mindless undead to prevent the necromancer who raised it from commanding it, as it works on the same basis?
Also something important I haven't considered. In your opinion what would be necesarry to protect an undead from rebuke/command attempts? I know theoretically Death Ward would work, but that can only target living creatures.

How would you approach using Utterances as magic item Command Words? My own first instinct would be having a modest DC 10+CL Truespeech check required to "just" activate it as a magic item independently of the Utterance from the "conventional" magic having much looser tolerance and some Circumstance bonus for knowing the corresponding Utterance, so relatively light training towards it all but guarantees the "base" magic item effect to avoid wasted actions. Then a function for Truespeech (and Spellcraft?) checks (DC 20+CL+2xUtterance level?) with a table for stuff like reducing the DC by constraining to a singular option within the Utterance or increasing it to work with the Utterance-altering feats.

Probably bundle with items designed around this like a Command Word-based alternate scroll or potion to pair with Metamagic Catalyst. Maybe some Perfect Map Wondrous Architecture like Portal-to-Portal Redirect with a Conjunctive Gate Command Word that acts as a password for convoluted teleport puzzle dungeon design or using the Utterance-repeat on Master of the Four Winds to retrigger something.

...Strikes me that a good "Magnum Opus" for this setup would be an Intelligent Magic Item (thus allowing Evolving Mind) with the "defining" feature of creating a copy of itself as a Permanent spell effect then slapping the copy with Ritual of Renaming to move the "pointer" for the "real" version to the copy, so it's rendered one-of-a-kind because attempting to recreate this alongside what it's to facilitate (probably exploding it with Rebuild Item immediately thereafter) just triggers this effect no matter where in existence you are or what countermeasures you attempt.

I would look at turn resistance.
Turning is actually not that 'good' in terms of action economy, and there are a handful of ways to increase your turn resistance.
To wit, if you are against someone with double your levels, why the hell are you fighting them at all? Such a foe would have plenty of faster ways to take you out than relying on turns, and Command ends if the character dies.
Is this a thought experiment, or an actual situation you are dealing with?

>I would look at turn resistance.
I guess turn resistance is as good as it gets if Protection from Evil doesen't work.
>Is this a thought experiment, or an actual situation you are dealing with?
thought experiment at the moment, might become more later down the line.
But I was mostly just making a small list of spells intelligent undead would value to counter their weaknesses.
Like Gentle Repose to maintain their form, Disguise Undead to move undetected, Life Ward to be protected from positive energy(inlcuding things turning from good clerics), Graft Flesh to recover limbs(extremly circumstential to ever be really worth it given how high level the spell is) and Rebuke/Command attempts from Evil Cleric seemed like the biggest weakness to such, Protection from Evil seemed like a potential solution, but it opens a can of worms about necromancy in general like you said.

I think this is a massive problem with a lot of RPG game design in general. If encounter difficulty always scales extremely faith your power level then very often your character never has a chance to feel powerful by contrast. You gotta give the heroes a big swarm of goblins to flex on every now and then
