After about 8 years since I last DM'ed a game, I've been asked to run a session. Unfortunately my books - adnd, 2e, 3e, 3.5, 4e, and 5e are in storage two states away. And i prefer physical copies. Thanks to critical role and the movie DND books have gone up in price which is weird.>4e books are ~10-15$ now. Is it viable to run 4e in 2025? I don't remember hating it and I still remember some home rules to streamline combat to speed it up a touch. Does anyone have suggestions for 1-3lvl adventures or campaign settings? >4e thread I guess
I don't care that you prefer physical.Download OSE and run them Hole in the Oak. Keep it simple.https://necroticgnome.com/products/old-school-essentials-basic-rules

>>97235358>Also, an average challenge is not supposed to be something that wipes the party.Agreed, I cannot argue with that.>without anybody dying or being brutally mangled.I don't know about that, at such CRs I would assume a monster that kills or brutally mangles one out of four is still an average challenge (considering things like Heal and Resurrection are easy to come by).But still, I can't consider a Level 20 Fighter even an 'average' threat to a party with 9th-level casters in. The action economy fucks him up, he has no crowd control, he has no real death effects, Force Cage fucks him up (at worst wasting him turns to cancel it or bypass it by use of items), his Touch AC won't be something extraordinary, a single Gated creature can distract him with minimal damage to the party and so on.
>>97235433I also think a big part of the reason PC/CR is a mess is that the system has no way to account for how well you optimize class levels. 4 badly optimized level 20s built using Core or mostly Core could conceivably have trouble with a 20th level optimized cross classed to hell martial character with cherry picked magic items from all over the place. Such a character would be the same CR as 20 levels of fighter with shit feats
>>97235294>I think the CR at high levels problem tends to be that death is usually just an inconvenience, a minor setback.Whenever I read through high level modules I keep coming across monsters and magic items whose abilities prevent resurrection. Though I've mostly been reading through Necromancer Games stuff so maybe they are unique in that.
>>97235394>The rest are 'peak human' by that age.Er, not really. Peak Human for mental abilities is 21 when you factor age bonuses, and that's assuming anything above level 1 is starting to become superhuman(which is fair honestly, earth is canon in D&D and you can't level up here).
>>97234237Ancestral blood memory. This is also why most varieties have an Always Alignment, because it's so thorough they hatch with mostly developed personalities.>>97234255>Dragons? God like beings? I never thought of that, so what’s an eldritch and time dragon? God dragons upon dragons? The literal god-dragons are the Epic level (BAB +30 prerequisite) Dragon Ascendant prestige class, Time Dragons are Epic at a different angle of Random Utter Bullshit.>>97234937>A dragon has to survive to the age of a Wyrm, to get to int 18 and qualify for a STEM PhD in the 1950s when that actually meant something. The standard deviation for IQ is 15 points and for the "conventional" 3d6 is 2.96. Int 18 would be something like 140 IQ, FAR beyond the bar for a PhD in pretty much any STEM field. The difficulty maps more to filtering low Wisdom, maladaptive Charisma, and a large number of very high skill checks than extremely high Intelligence. And the correlation of IQ with D&D-Intelligence is only partial, since quite a few of the things IQ measures are actually governed by Wisdom, like how meteorology is apparently a high-DC subset of Survival.>>97235343>Since when is insane planning part of a creature's CR?Comment too long. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.If you're wondering where to start:- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.Thread question: How often do you use an official GURPS setting? Which are your favorites?
>>97234423>Nonsense. Substantiate your claim.NTA but I've always felt the same. Most of the time when people talk about specific systems having "flavor" they're full of shit, but in the case of Shadowrun I just can't divorce the setting from the system like that. Something about it fits it's use case in a way GURPS, or anything else, does not.

>>97235659No, he doesn't. A suit of magical armour replaces mundane armour. Core rulebook page 340.
>>97235422True, but also debatable. Having a character or other model capable of monster slaying at minimum provides a disincentive to the enemy. The threat of monster slayer is frequently more important than the ability itself. Also against a T7 monster you're already only wounding on 6s, so you're not fishing any deeper than normal.
Why does lichdom exist when you can just clone yourself in 5e?
>>97229221>and isn't stuck in a gross corpse body,It is heavily implied that Liches having "gross corpse bodies" is mostly due to laziness. A "corpse lich" is the equivalent of a nerd scientist who is so focused on their research that they stop eating, drinking and sleeping. Liches that make certain to maintain their physical bodies in good condition(or just jump to new living bodies on the regular like Cagliostro) can easily pass as the living. So Cagliostro is actually a lich, but one that puts in the work to stay presentable rather than decaying into a skeleton.
>>97235524>So Cagliostro is actually a lichHe doesn't practice necromancy, his body is artificial but biologically alive and he has never inhabited a corpse, and he has no phylactery. In what respect is he a lich?

Guys, I want to talk about HELLPIERCERS. I bought this game a bit ago because I thought it looked cool, and I've read it, and I don't know enough people weird enough to play it with me, and I can't stop thinking about it, and I just have to talk about it with someone.>First up: what the fuck is Hellpiercers? And why do you spell it in all-caps? Do you have autism?HELLPIERCERS is a tactical tabletop RPG developed by SandyPug Games alongside a few people who did some dev work on some of the Lancer supplements. It casts the PCs as gnostic demigod heroes and veterans of the War in Heaven, who aided the forces of humanity in regaining their stolen gnosis and slaying the Demiurge, his Archons, and angelic generals. Having conquered Heaven and liberated the mortal plane from the tyranny of false divinity, they now cast their eyes downward, into Hell, where countless human souls remain enslaved by the demon lords below. Hellpiercers, armed with their god-slaying weapons, clad in armor forged from the corpses of angels, lead a war of liberation against the forces of Hell, to free the enslaved souls of every human who has ever lived.I spell it in all-caps because it's title is rendered in all-caps. I'm pretty sure I'm not autistic, but I've never been tested, so who even fucking knows?
>>97235384Nothing described here is preventing the GM from doing cool shit with their guys.

>>97235598Sure. The way characters work in TACCOM is that their abilities are defined by their weapons (your attacks), armor (your movement rules), and class (your special abilities), at least initially; there's an unlock system. Because you can swap shit out at your leisure during RECON, you can just completely reconfigure your team to whatever you think will be most useful before heading out. It encourages a system of plays and counter-plays as you feel out what your enemy is good at and bad at and specialize towards hitting them where they're weak.
In terms of enemy group, there's shit like abyssal dinosaurs representing the primordial, pre-human world and one group is a pretty straightforward Cthulhu reference.I'm a pretty big fan of Metricos. Caim doesn't have some grand vision or axiomatic guiding ethos. He's a gangster, his demons are all gangsters, and he just fucking hates you. His faction's special mechanic is that he beats the shit out of you.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! >>97235494I've used Yoon-Suin quite a bit. What about it were you thinking of using specifically? >Indianess The Hundred Kingdoms part is very India inspired, but wasn't a part I used at all. Its on the map but wasn't as interesting to anyone so we haven't gone there. Starting in the Yellow City worked well enough, generating an outsider's quarter with the tables gave me enough to work with and do an intro adventure. The hex content generation for Lahag was I think, in retrospecct compared to other hexcrawling I've run and read about, too crowded. There's basically an encounter every hex which themes with the jam packed jungle but felt like too much in play. >fomalhaut I've only used the Nocturnal Table and liked it quite a bit.
>>97235546What about it were you thinking of using specifically? Whole setting will be cool, but at least Yelow city. Use it as a class I city, a journey to which is a separate adventure, a place where you can take a caravan with great profit and where there is the greatest chance of buying/selling a magic item. But the problem is that Fomalhaut as a planet was a lifeless glacier 4,000 years ago until an interstellar Greek civilization arrived there. 3,200-3,800 years ago, it fell in war, after which the inhabitants of Fomalhaut slid into the age of iron and bronze. Meanwhile, Yoon-Suin is simply a fantasy setting, just set not in the Western Middle Ages, but in the Indian/Far Eastern.
>>97235466Nice ill keep that in mind, thx!

What kind of fantasy monsters are you into? I like original abominations, standard humanoids/mythological creatures/giant animals are boring to me.
>>97228517The Nemean Lion. I like the fact its a huge ass lion with nigh invulnerable skin and is intelligent. Moreso that Grappler Baki has become the baseline of what I consider "mundane" strength in a fantasy setting so pic related would be how I'd imagine the Nemean Lion to be.
>>97228517The more rooted in folklore or myth the better.I like Fomorians and hosts of ghostly riders, and evil child-stealing fairies that aren't quite elves and aren't quite goblins.I like the vengeful dead, and tremendous animals that can speak, because they are touched by ancient powers.Manifestations of untamed nature and the malice of the ancient dead.
