Got the results back from phase one of a game design contest I entered. They’ve only evaluated the rules so far, but mine scored S tier, which is the highest possible.Feeling cautiously optimistic, but the real test is in April once I submit a working prototype.

>>97233803That sounds like a lot of LA. I know sneople were hard to play in 3.5 because of it.
>>97234578LA was inflated partly from a really awful process around it (just look at Savage Species overriding its own results for being stupidly high, or that one time it was explained and looked too weak so the writer added a racial hit die as an improvement...) and partly because a LOT of the designers didn't actually want people playing Weird Shit.Given what Totemist can pull in the field full-time, such a package COULD have been quite cheap.

>>97235777Yeah, play a much better game.. The only reason bfrpg ever existed was because BX was hard to source in the early 2000s.Bfrpg is a half baked dumpster fire that is only still an extant novelty because it is "open source".Mechanically, the game is just bad, and the content for it is some of the most unpleasant dry material I've ever digested.

Hey, I’m looking at the Infernal Melee Charm Crimson Wind Ribbons. I’m not seeing a reason why you can’t trigger it off itself. You trigger it normally, make a reflexive withering attack, trigger it again, and so on. Assuming your dice rolls work out this seems to be legal.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! >Be me.>Lord General of the Nordican 1225th/ defacto governor of Nordica II.>For the last few years we've been abandoned by the wider Imperium to an ice world that very much resembles our home.>In that time we've constructed the city of New Yur.>A sprawling metropolis surrounded by a network of trenches visible from orbit dug by the kriegers and valhallans.>We've also made more or less peace with the orks we were originally sent here to fight, and even made alliances with the ruinous powers, but those truces only last for one day a year.>A day that is fast approaching.>Candlemass brings peace, but also war to Nordica II every year without fail.>This year however the orks have decided to convert the former colloseum constructed by khorne worshipers in the ruins of a space hulk that crashed here into an arena for a sport they're apparently calling "Blood Bowl.">I will be attending the first of these games on Candlemass day, which is set to pit greenskins against some surviving khorne worshipers they've captured.>Emperor willing this will be the beginning of true peace to our world.>But knowing Candlemass that seams unlikely and I'll be waiting the whole time for some new threat to emerge.

They could have done whatever they wanted with us, and everyone else in the room for that matter, and then scattered before reinforcement arrived >Me and Trooper Natalya stay for a few more drinks >I suppose I should be lecturing her, since it is pretty obvious from her attire that she deliberately posed as a stripper in a place Tallarns are known to frequent in order to provoke a fight >But as I said before, I don’t really like the Tallarn, some of them are okay, but overall they seem to have ten times as many rapey perverts as the rest of the regiments on this planet combined, so you always have to watch your back around them >Also Natalya is kind of hot even with a black eye and a split lip, and also I am sort of in a rule breaking mood tonight, and also the whole thing with the Drukhari has thrown me off my game >So when Natalya suggests we take out recon snowmobiles and sneak off to watch the Blood Bowl game, I am surprisingly open to the idea >We park our snowmobiles on the outskirts of the arena along with a mass of other vehicles, and are not surprised to see some other Guard vehicles here, “borrowed” by off duty soldiers. Plenty with the markings of the Nordicans, Valhallans, Felinid Auxiliaries, Happy Enders, and a few other regiments with an abundance of rule breakers. Extremely few Tallarns, and none from the Kriegers except a tidy row of vehicles surrounded by patrolling Korpsmen that look like they are supposed to be there >The majority of the vehicles are civilian, Slaaneshi, or Orkish however, and there are even a few Tau and Eldar anti-grav vehicles mixed in
>>97235703>This is one strange fucking planet, there can’t be too many places like this in the galaxy where Imperials, xenos, and Chaos worshippers park next to each other in such a haphazard fashion >The inside of the arena is even stranger >The off-duty voidship crews, Rogue Trader armsmen, and Guardsmen, as well as wealthy off-worlders and local civilians are mostly sitting in one area of the stands, with the Orks and Gretchin clustered around another area, and the Slaaneshi mostly sitting in a third area, but there is plenty of mixing between the three groups in the hallways and tunnels leading to the stands, and along the edges of each seating area. There are also a few Tau and Eldar Corsairs sitting with the normal humans, and a few Drukhari hanging out with the Slaaneshi degenerates. Most individuals are armed regardless of background, but mostly with sidearms and smallish melee weapons, plus a few carbines and rifles >The game itself is, uh, interesting >One one side there are Orks, looking pretty much like normal Orks>On the other are some Khornate barbarians the Orks apparently rounded up from among the scattered bands of survivors living far to the south of here. The Khornates are all beefy thugs, around 7-8 feet tall and extremely muscle bound, yet still lighter than their opponents. The fact that they can withstand repeated physical contact with Orks is impressive. They wear patchwork armor that looks like it was originally mean for Orks, but reworked and repainted. Aside from their armor, most only wear a loincloth and boots, but are sometimes even missing one of those. Overall they would be pretty attractive in a hyper masculine sort of way if it weren’t for the nauseating symbols they incorporate into their armor and carve into their flesh, and the odd physical proportions some of them have
>Be Felinid Sergeant Tom>Wake up hung over>Wake up with at least a couple empty bottles of Amasec in my cot>Wake up knowing I'm gonna spend yet another Candlemas on this forzen hell hole>Was supposed to be redeployed this past year, but that never happened>Get up>Wake up my Felinid White Sheild nephew, sleeping the next cot over>Get the both of us properly dressed for the perpetually cold weather, as usual >Get break feast, as usual>Check in with the regiment supply sergeant, as usual >Finally some good news, the ship carrying our hot coco rations has just dropped out of warp>Inform Commissar Kate of this rare piece of good news>Join Kate on her ride to the Krieg HQ, some of their troopers have been shooting Felinids>Decide to take my little Shite nephew along
>>97235713>Also, there are bizarre looking cheerleaders for both the Orks and the Khornates, but the fan favorites seem to be the three Eldar cheerleaders who are working hard despite the fact that their team isn’t set to play until the third game. I suppose that means there will be Slaaneshi cheerleaders at some point too, which may be too much for me to handle, I already find the Slaaneshi spectators sitting in the stands across from me distracting enough >As for the game itself, I have no idea what is going on down there, it just seems to be brawls that get periodically broken up by the refs. I guess I will cheer for the Khornates? But only because like any good Valhallan, I hate Orks. Almost as much as I hate Tau.>Confused by the game, I start inspecting the stands more closely. What sort of scout would I be if I wasn't on top of every potential threat? >Off to the left of me there is a section of box seats whose entrances are well guarded. Plenty of Nordicans, which makes sense given the Lord General is in one of those boxes, but plenty of Krieg Korpsmen too, which makes a lot less sense given they are probably the last group of soldiers you want at an event like this given they will try and use any minor outbreak of violence as an excuse to turn this whole place into a bloodbath >Only one of the box seats assigned to the Slaaneshi is occupied, but the entrances to it are well guarded. >The Ork box seats are strangely empty>Before I can dwell on that, a big metal humanoid machine enters the field from a hidden openings in the middle of a play. Is this some sort of “special play” allowed under Blood Bowl’s non-existent rules? A poorly timed half-time show? No one in the crowd or on the field seems to know how to react, and the machine doesn’t look Orkish, more like the offspring of a Dreadnought and a Necron Warrior than anything >I am starting to get a bit nervous, maybe coming to the game wasn’t such a good idea after all

No combat with anyone, but still drained health as an undead ogre chef happily gave information if they ate his “slop”. The ogre was so happy that someone actually willingly ate his food he exploded. The zombies cheered, went outside, and perished the moment they reached the edge of the temple’s undead zone.5th encounter: Shadows and a Spectre.6th encounter: Boss fight with a ghost atop the temple’s bell tower.Forgot the fact that the party’s long rest got interrupted by Hobgoblin scouts that tracked them down. They dealt with them, got some info from some context clues, then got their rest.
>>97235667>generic combat: 1/10>combat with interesting mechanic: 8/10>semi generic combat: 5/10>social, tone shift: 7/10>generic combat: 1/10>generic combat: 1/10Total score: 4/10. Repetitive, lacking buildup, scattered, not focused.Get rid of generic fights. Merge ghost fights so the boss has interesting mechanic. Add side obstacles/traps/hazards with clear risk/reward, ie something solvable by physical skills or spending utility resources, like a chest across from a large gap filled with spikes. Implement a cross-dungeon mechanic that ties things together and builds up, like all zombies killed with slash damage become extra crawling hands on the boss fight or something, or necrotic magic is doubled healing halved.
>>97235710Generic fights are fine anon, but they do need a purpose. Disarming the party's expectations before you throw a hard and complicated fight at them is a perfect application of a generic and boring combat. My criticism is that all of the interesting encounters are grouped together, which will make the generic fights at the end feel super bad.
>>97235710>so the boss has interesting mechanic.I didn’t mention it, but the boss had a mechanic that reflected radiant damage he took, which was what he was vulnerable to. This ability got turned off if he burnt a legendary resistance, and this information was gained by the party exploring through the dungeon before the fight. This meant that the party had to still conserve resources that could immobilize through the whole dungeon for the last fight. There was also the fact that the fight was atop a bell tower, and the boss had attacks that could shove people (cleric got whacked off and went down from fall damage). There were some obstacles and the like, but they didn’t really burn resources on account of our Monk existing. Also, what you call generic combat still ends up being a learning experience for the party (they’re all new players), because the Guardians made heavy use of the Dodge action, reminding them how powerful it is, as well as prepared actions (the Guardians kept opening the door to allow skeletal archers to shoot, then closed it so the archers remained out of sight). The previous dungeon had a greater traps and obstacles to combat ratio since it was a Kobold’s den. This was more of a slugfest by design.
