DnD is a bloody mess when you move out of medieval magic fantasy setting.

Check Cepheus Light. Cepheus is the generic version of the Traveller system, and Cepheus Light is a lite version so players don't have to spend much effort learning a new system.

Another option is Mothership, gritty scifi. It's not DnD, but DnD players usually love it.

I think those numbers are better and give you more flexibility overall.
If you want a deathstar with the banner that benefits the whole unit, keep the 10x6 and see how it goes for a few games. Personally I'd try maybe:
>8x3 8x3 6x2
Or if you can find 3 more models:
>7x3 7x3 7x3
I think that gives the best mix between:
>Tactical flexibility
>Manoeuvrability
>Getting lots of shots off
>Ensuring everyone is within fighting range if you get into combat.

Also don't forget sea guard can redress the ranks for free when charged, so you could always start the game in 2 ranks of 10 (plus 1) for shooting, and then stand and shoot *and* then switch to 3 ranks of 7, for free, when charged for combat.

GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image (follow the URL to get to a folder with some files, read the files to get to the archive). Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

Thread question: What is your opinion on the art in GURPS books?
>>
>Basic Set p. 287: A TL0 wooden medium shield weighs 15 lb and has DR 7. A TL1 metal medium shield weighs 30 lb and has DR 10.
>Low-Tech p. 116 and Low-Tech Companion 2 p. 19: A TL0 wooden medium shield weighs 14 lb and has DR 4. A TL1 metal medium shield weighs 11 lb and has DR 4.
>High-Tech p. 72: A TL6 metal medium shield weighs 30 lb and has DR 10.
I assume that the Low-Tech rules are effectively errata for the Basic Set rules. In that case, is it just impossible to get a shield with DR 10 at TL1?
>>
>>96462767
Better art would have been too expensive. It beats having no art so I am appreciative of what we have.

I don't play 40k and I don't have any of the books, but I have ONCE AGAIN heard some people talking about how powerful the space marines are, compared to normal people, and I had a sudden thought I need rules knowledge to disambiguate.

If a unit with 1 surviving standard guardsman charges a unit with 1 surviving standard marine what are the dice rolls that determine the results of that one charge? Assuming the luckiest rolls possible, is it possible for that guardsman to kill that marine?

If it isn't possible to do the 1-turn kill, what are the rolls the marine will make in retaliation, and what are the odds that the guardsman survives those to get another try against the marine?

(I'm not sure if "standard marine" and "standard guardsman" make sense - if you're playing a specific codex, will there be rules that make *every* marine non-standard, or is there a type of marine that every chapter gets? And same for the guardsman. If there's no "standard," then I guess I'm thinking of a Cadian charging an Ultramarine, just for being the two poster-boy codexes)

I am going to treat you like an idiot because this is a stupid question, but I am going to give you a correct answer because it bothers me to have people giving out inaccurate information. If you ask the magical light box (ie: Google it) you might be surprised how easy this information is to collect.

In the latest edition a single guardsman remaining from a unit of standard guard infantry (Cadians, Catachans or Krieg) cannot kill a single remaining Space Marine from a standard space marine infantry squad (Intercessors or Tacticals) in a single round of fighting. This is because regular guard have only damage 1 for their melee attacks and a Space Marine has 2 wounds. In order for a single guardsman to kill a Space Marine in a single Fight phase, the survivor must be a sergeant (Cadians) or watchmaster (Krieg) with a specialist close combat weapon, either a Power Sword or Chain Sword. Either will provide at least one additional attack and make it possible for them to kill the Marine before they retaliate.

As for the specific odds of outcomes, I direct you towards the Quick Start Rules on the official website, six sided dice and a calculator. You can also google one of the plethora of mathhammer apps people have made in like half an hour with bits of string, buttons and a twist tie.

Honestly the new edition is pretty good, the big soup lists (botfa, pelennor, motw, mordor, grand armor, etc) cover most of what you'd do with old alliance matrix anyways, plus a lot of the new army lists let models and combos be fun where before they were basically unplayable
in terms of listbuilding I had more fun brainstorming weird lists in last edition, but in terms of actual games the new one has a lot of improvements

biggest failure of the new edition is ringwraiths without a doubt, totally murdered an iconic profile for nothing. losing special strikes kinda sucks too, but tbqh sword/axe strikes were lame and bad for the game, if only they kept the ones for staffs/maces/clubs for some models

I would get the black orc team but it’s OOS at the only retailer in my country that stocks BB (the rest are the big mainline GW games). I don’t know when it will come back if ever since they lost their exclusivity deal with GW, but as luck would have it somebody posted an imperial nobility team a few days back on our local secondhand forum.

It’s about 27-28 USD with shipping. I like the models, the fat dudes, and their uniforms, but will they be skewed or complicated like the goblin team? They’re honestly so cheap I may as well get them. Will I get filtered by the “puff and slash” pants that imperials are famous for? I’m quite fond of their box art scheme as I never paint anything purple. Oh and do need to buy another box to build all the variants or can I just let my opponent now before the game like “this guy is built like Y but he’s X” or is that not a concern at all?
And if I need an ogre or star player or w/e I think I can print them or try to find them cheap. I have a few projects in front of them in my hobby queue.

Which edition of epic would you recommend, 2nd or 4th?

Imperial Noble got their full special players in 1 box (4 bodyguard, 2 thrower, 2 blitzer ) You can mark the base rim with the role name using the transfer sheet in the box to avoid confusion.

No, they're just metallics. It's likely this metallic paint from AK interactive that's fooling you. It's much clearer in person. You just need a dark metallic, apply very thinned down black and pull it into the recesses and lower parts, do the same again but with a brown, then use a medium metallic and paint upwards and towards details. Finally some fine highlights with a bright metallic and some scratches, can also use a dark grey for damage.

can you be in debt in your game or can you have loans?

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR-era D&D, derived systems, and compatible content.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons as played in the game's first decade — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started.

My idea was to keep it 100% as authentic and historical as possible, rewatched the Rome tv series, the whole deal. Then as a DM I had to find a way to make druids scary, so of course I gave them magic powers (MUs to make it more sword and sorcery). Shit went sideways from there. Soon druids went from throwing a fireball here and there to raising undead armies, and how to forget the barbarian werewolves! Rather than keeping it at that cozy level, I kept upping the ante to the point there was a whole zombie apocalypse, so the players escaped to Egypt with Mark Antony and at that point you just have to add the pyramids and Stargate, and that's where it ended.

Fun campaign (really short too, I don't think it lasted more than 20 sessions), still want to run a proper historical campaign tho.

Go ahead and run the can't-reduce-play-cost floodgate in Black as well if you're so worried about Royal Knights specifically.

Trench Crusade General - /trench/
Weird love Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>How do I get started?

Man that goes pretty counter to TC in particular and FLGS's writ large. If there's another store nearby it's probably worthwhile to go elsewhere instead, but if not well just run games from home with whatever minis you can find
>>

Homunculus are an interesting model since they become more cost effective in a campaign but are rarely worth it in a one-off.

It will pretty much always cost more to turn a Homunculus into a second-X than it would be to just buy X - but the resurrection feature and the larger sizes of end-campaign warbands means that becomes a much better value for money.

If you want one bull, you'd be better off buying a bull, but HoW can get you 2 almost-bulls.

A lot of stupid fucking faggots have been posting some bullshit about how AI art is "good" and "fine for the hobby". I am here to tell you, no, you are a FAGGOT who will not pour BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS into his game. You know what AI slop is? You coveting the ability of others and compensating by using tools. You are a fool with an automatic drill acting greater than a true carpenter. Continue down your path. One day you will awaken and see yourself in a pit of disingenuous tar. An inescapable muck that you have built into your home, a fitting place for a wretch unwilling to unabashedly display their love for their fellow players in any form.

Anyway, post art from your campaigns. I need to update this, but its mostly my current party. Goblin and the orc died during the end of the last dungeon.

Genuinely strange that you guys who've for years prided yourself as pro-nature, pro-human, pro-soul, real, hardworking, all of the above, who would reject lazy, ugly, easy-way-out, degenerate art created by humans are now with open arms embracing similar degenerate art as created by a machine. Genuinely is the only reason because you don't like the people who're largely against it? Is your tribe more important than your humanity? Or did you reject your humanity? Do you want real human expression to be destroyed and replaced by a degenerate glob of noise and pixels that was barely even touched by human hands? I am genuinely asking because it's really baffling to me why we're headed toward a world where hard work and effort, to glorify one's ability, one's Creator, one's purpose, one's humanity is just completely rejected in favor of leaving it up to a machine for instant gratification. Are you literally retarded? Do you hate the talents that God gave you? I am so confused.

I'm a professional illustrator and make my living doing art, and even I totally get how AI art is an almost irresistible tool for anyone wanting or needing visuals who does not have the time or skills to produce them, or who doesn't want to pay for them (good art is expensive yo - the 20/30 bucks shit in this thread is massively underpriced, I take 80 bucks an hour).

So while my market will definitely shrink, and having honed this specific skill that's being replaced for more than two decades, I still understand having AI at your disposal is a massively useful tool and there's no way around that now. For examples like mentioned in this thread - once-occurring NPCs, mood pics of a landscape in a private game - sure why the fuck wouldn't you? The results are genuinely amazing quality, if you manage to iron out the sloppy artifacts.

Personally, if I see AI anywhere that is supposed to be a professional work, I am immediately turned off and boycotting that product - not because I am offended as an artist, but because it tells me the company doesn't care about their product and would rather skim on cost than deliver quality. Because you can't compare AI to an automatic drill - it doesn't just help you in your creative process, it takes over the entire creative process.

That's what getting enspelled armour does. A once-per-day spell's not bad utility, but a caster that doesn't get Shield is the one who really appreciates MI:W

I'd say go with Cleric for Bless. A bonus to every attack or save for ten rounds is really good, you can use it to help two allies as well as yourself, and you have a good chance of making concentration saves to maintain it, since fighters have Con save proficiency and Bless itself will also give you a bonus to concentration checks. Shield is good, but it only lasts one round, so I'd want it available more than once a day. Fighters already have good armor anyway. Goodberry is only really useful if food and survival are a big factor in the campaign, which they usually aren't. The healing effect of a goodberry would only be useful for bringing someone up from unconsciousness, but your DM might not allow that, and if you just want to keep people from dying, the Spare the Dying cantrip from the cleric list can stabilize people at will and from range.

>NMM looks good only on pictures, but on an actual 3d model it's not nearly as great as you think it is
Maybe, but from all the pictures I've seen online, I feel like KDM's artstyle lends itself really well to NMM - and I can't really find many examples of people pulling good looking TMM on kdm minis to disprove this
maybe this means I just need to step up my TMM game and prove everyone (mostly myself) wrong and show that TMM can look good with kingdom death, but I've also heard that it's unironically harder to pull off realistic looking tmm than just do nmm

Im not a fan of NNM for alot of KDM. It can usually look clean and immaculate, where KDM has a very dark and rusty feeling to me. Here's my progress on the butcher blades I was color sampling alot of parts so keep in mind it's still 90% in first layer stages (and figuring out what I even want to do with its main theme).
