>GW dropping support for school clubs

That's a fucking low blow that, probably one of the things they got right and did more of because there wasn't much of it back 20 years ago.

Their games are more and more for consoomer messes in their 30s and 40s. How is any kid playing 40k with their pocket money?

Not surprised, it is too expensive for kids now, and the more detailed models are definitely made for experienced painters not dumb kids.

I tried to set up a Warhammer school club in 2014 and it was a non starter because of the expense vs the area it was in, and the cost has only gotten worse.

I came back to 40k after a 10 year absence and I'm finding the cost more than expected, and painting them takes longer and is kind of stressful.

I like them in theory. The idea of this technocratic society ran an anicent AI that's starting to breakdown is really cool and fits into 40k well enough. Problem is they just look like little space marines right now. I think the best way to solve that would be to field more men of iron. Gives them a bit more of an identity and also more creativity for what you could do with the robots. Also since they're all weird clones of each other and their master is starting to fail they should look more deformed and weird, like the cloning system is making them imperfect

You have no power here L Ruin! Begone Club-Shirt-Wearing-Tournament-Player! Back I say!

Like I said, both games are fine if you tune down the competitive side and just goofy off. I used to play Warmachine / Warmahordes in MK2 and MK3 and the game wasn't fun after a point due to how cutthroat it was. The terrain there was even worse! My group all has wives, I dont have kids yet so I'll host and have some friends over to game on my tables and shoot the shit. It's a lot of fun. I'm also becoming far more anti social since I'm not going to the FLGS or showing up at events.

Conventions are still great, I highly recommend. Just don't go to Adepticon only for the tournaments. Remember the hobby is mostly sitting in a room painting.

Warhammer continues to thrive and mutate. Some of them are bad, others are good. Sometimes you get Astartes, other times you get Femstodes. This is the sign of a healthy franchise, because people are trying things and invested in it.

Magic is much worse. It’s cannibalizing other IPs to feed off their popularity. Lord of the Rings having Black Aragorn is masking the true sin which was having Lord of the Rings at all. Being the cloaca from which all franchises can enter is not admirable, it makes you sleazy. The last few attempts at an “original” setting have failed, that cowboy world was pathetic.

>Breakthrough type scenario
-Both sides make a force of 9k BV, 5-8 units (3/4 pilots)
-Then the mapsheets are rolled (Wide River and Lake Valley)
-Defender deploys within 3 hexes of the middle on their home mapsheet
-Attacker enters from their home edge on turn 1

-Both sides get 50 SP for crippling/destroying a 'mech
-Both sides get 50 SP for destroying the opposing commander 'mech
-Attacker gets [Tonnage] SP for every 'mech within 8 hexes of the defender home edge on turn 8
-Defender gets 150 SP for crippling/destroying at least 50% of the Attackers force.

Game ends on turn 8. This particular scenario ended 300 - 220 in favor of the Defender. Defender Crippled Mercury and Destroyed Sentinel and Catapult. Attacker destroyed Scorpion and Quickdraw, and ended up with Wolverine and Thunderbolt in the objective area.

The Wolverine and Thunderbolt had fairly little issue, as once they got past the assault 'mechs, they couldn't give much chase (which was intended scenario design).
>>
>>96492062
*within 3 hexes of the middle of the mapsheets, not within the middle of their own mapsheet.

Also, writing asymmetrical scenarios for PvP-style gameplay is hard.

Feels like a starting location problem rather than a river crossing problem. Did you also mean the River Valley map sheet? There's no Lake Valley one

I've toyed with the idea of doing up a generic sheet i can print out to track this stuff when it comes to writing out Batreps later. Like a turn by turn thing per mech where there's a line for movement type, what it shot at, any special notes, etc. Combined with taking pictures at the end of movement phase and I'd have close to a play by play.

The spicier the better. I'll start to get the ball rolling:

MTG, DnD and Warhammer are actually good for the hobby. They get new people started in this hobby and they keep the trend chasers contained and away from the rest of the hobby.

Appealing to the normie masses is a necessary evil in order to keep what you love afloat. Even if it comes with the negative baggage of doing so.

Generals are good for /tg/.

Lore shouldn't have to be completely concise or even consistent to appease the autists. People don't agree about the significance of stuff that's going on today(which recent president is responsible for the impending Great Recession II etc) and tons of websites from the 90's/00's are gone forever. So imagine how much disagreement and lost information there'd be about stuff that happened centuries or millennia ago.

>a huge proportion of RPG players would be better off playing board games. They either don't want the freedom to interact with the game world however they want that a GM provides, or just want a loosely structured storytelling framework.
God damn, this is so true. People will often balk and screech at you when you point this or something similar out, too, and accuse you of being a "storyshitter" or a theater kid or some other description that's meant to be insulting. I don't say any of this with ego, I truly don't have emotions about some anonymous person saying something like this to me on the internet. I wholeheartedly believe you are correct, and that they would be better of playing board games. Maybe something like Gloomhaven or HeroQuest. I don't even dislike those games, either, that's not a put-down, it's not me saying "heh, I'm the patrician RPG player, and you're the plebeian board gamer." I also like board games. I just know a lot of people approach RPGs like board games, and as a result, end up playing what turns out to be a pretty mediocre game for most involved.
>>
>>96492794
Classic RPGs have a skirmish game origin generally, so are pretty combat heavy to this day.
>>
>>96492806
The issue is not with combat, but an entire approach to how RPGs are played. Thinking and acting strictly within predefined rules, for example.
It's why Dungeon Crawl Classics has the "Mighty Deed." It's bigger than the rule itself. Combined with the dice chain and the frequent encouragement for the GM to interpret things dynamically, it opens people up to an entirely different way of playing the game if all they've over known is grid-based tactics games with a layer of roleplaying over top of them.

Why do traditional games seem to attract the most socially undesirable people?

Not trolling, I seriously would like to get to the bottom of this. I don't get it, tabletop games are social in nature so why do they attract anti-social weirdos, you expect these types to stay at home and video game. Why are some games MUCH worse that other when it comes to players, ie. Warhammer 40k is worse than historical Wargames, compared MtG to Chess, etc.

Is there an explanation for this phenomenon?

>Send me back 20 years in time and I have the tools to become an absolute Gigachad.
You have them right now, but you won't.

I don't know where this idea comes from, that the issue that keeps you from self-actualization is lack of knowledge on some secret to success. You're fat because you're lazy, you don't have friends because you're too socially anxious to talk to people, and you're poor because you're too dumb and/or lazy to get a college degree in a well-compensated field.

No idea.

Most people I meet who do the hobby I don't really connect with, I tend to play with friends and family.

A lot of the guys I have met in the hobby are just too ill mannered for me to ever have in my house for a game. And I would probably not play a game with someone I would not have over.

I think if you're a high-functioning nerd, you have a mask on at work etc that's pretty exhausting to maintain. You need to pencil in a certain amount of time with other nerds because the normies will crush you with their banality. A guy at my work ribs me about using a word he didn't know months ago like it's the funniest thing he'd ever experienced. So you have a certain amount of time when you can be yourself and chat about history or Asian horror movies or whatever and while you enjoy the game, you're aware it's a vector for socializing.

And then you have low-functioning nerds who are NEETs etc but have realized they have social needs(the more hardcore autists won't get past playing vidya on their own) and want to be around the high-functioning nerds. The autism brain goes all in on Warhammer or whatever and they play extremely competitively because it's probably the one thing they're good at. I think the most successful games are the ones that have allowed these two groups to work in harmony. Like how old 40K tournaments had painting/sportsmanship prizes or how RPGs have a mix of combat and roleplaying/acting.

>>
>>96485012
I agree. We have to keep in mind that everything about 40k, the lore, the rules, the culture, etc is designed only to promote the purchase and use of the current range of figures. As it's difficult to make rules that cover the current figure range, with it's nine foot tall space marines, dreadnoughts, winged demons and tyranids, vehicles and huge 'heros' balancing on tactical rock piles, GW just doesnt bother with decent rules for fighting inside buildings. This may be why most 40k players just don't bother either and mostly stick with the occasional solid terrain display pieces and L shaped cardboard.
>>
>>96485173
They would look ok with a bit of paint. Maybe glue them to lollypop sticks and add random bits of foliage and earth piled up against them (using wood filler), add random extra rows to each long one to break up the straight lines a bit? Walls tend to be built straight, with nature making them more 'organic' over time.

>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, Judge Dredd, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void, Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

Oathmark. It's very generic but in a good way, and you can mix and match units from other factions to get what you want. It's designed to be model agnostic, though as pointed out it is darkage themed.
I've never played Dragon Rampant, but it's getting a 2e release shortly, but Billhooks Fantasia is a straight up awful 'game'. It's exceedingly bad and does not do fantasy.

Like hammers. Their a lot faster than infantry and get a ton of bonuses on the charge. My main opponent adopted cav heavy armies from the getgo as he realised how good they are, and I have a really hard time countering them without preparation.
Combat is never locked in oathmark, the lower is pushed back, so cav can charge, throw the foe back, then next turn go in again.

I've just made this game (based on oldhammer) to promote wargaming in my country where the hobby is almost non-existent. I've originally put it out in my native language, and now it's available in English for free.
I hope it may be of use to someone. I just wanted give back to the community.

This is what I'm loving about 3D printing
I just pull the supports off and my model is usually ready to paint
Meanwhile I spent hours snipping and then cleaning every mold line off my box of Perry Austrians
This is ignoring all the failed supports, failed prints, messy chemicals, etc of course

Looks fun but if we are entering the weird war territory, is it the best ruleset around?

Skill issue. Having a second tabletop player around all day every day is a blessing.

I have a big set of Kromlech Poland 1939 scenery, should be enough to fill even a 4x4 table.

Based Primarch. After checking the rules quickly I have a few questions.
What is the purpose of the conflict matrix in the Sword&Shield variant? Is it just a tool for keeping the games somewhat historically accurate or does it have any other purpose?
Do you plan to create any fantasy supplement in the future?
Any way to support you? Do you plan to sell your rules through Wargame Vault perhaps?

Alright TG since its been a while and I haven't seen a thread on this but lets have a good old traditional fantasy and Wi-Fi art thread.

Post some classic or old pieces of settings art to share.

Is classic a style (group of styles), an age, or just a "feels lie it fits"?
