What do you think could be THE sport in a scifi space game?

I believe that spacefaring civilizations should have their futuristic equivalent of soccer, a sport spread everywhere that can be played in a small scale among kids as much as absurdly huge events with tons of money exchanging hands. It should be in zero-g to make it feel space-y and it should be complex to the point people in the outside don't get what's going on.

But I don't really have a picture of what it could be like. I've toyed with having sport stars at a station or a big match interupting time sensitive discussions, but I always fear players actually wanting to join in even though that'd be great.

Whatever system is fine, I'm interested even if it's not gonna be something I could insert 1 to 1. Purely conceptual ideas are fine too.

It would be much easier to relegate your idea to fantasy, because spacefaring beyond our moon treads far into improbability, according to the current applications of the systematic study of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.
And even trips to the moon take an unrealistically unsustainable cost of time and resources, with high risks involved with not just the launch, but the transit itself.
I'm sure you could look into theoretical fuel sources that are plausible and haven't been disproven yet if you want to keep things scientific, but if you want to focus more on fun, just make it fantasy and don't worry so much about plausibility.
>>
>>96590613
Star wars version would be cooler though. We have to find a bunch of goofy aliens first however.
>>
Maybe this is more cyberpunk than strictly sci fi, but I remember watching some kind of show where people had the ability to upload their consciousness to a hard disc located in the person's neck and you could switch between bodies at will as long as you had the resources to do so. One of the effects of this was that you could have combat sports that were essentially to death, so long as the disk remained undamaged. I feel like that could be interesting as errata and as something the players could get involved with or in.
>>
>>96590746
fuck, skate+sport is a really good one, but maybe more for a cyberpunk game.
>>
>>96590811
that's secondary, there are already space settings. The question is about sports played in those already existing settings.

Isn't podracing just nascar with PvP?
Fun, but not really special.

Those ones don't make my dick hard though

playing 5e and on the 3rd session at level 5 each they have encountered the BBEG and now plan to booby trap his lair with alchemical fire and engage him in combat. They say they just want to talk to him, but they are specifically planning to light his lair on fire BEFORE attempting to engage with him in conversation or anything. The players have encountered this guy before, they should know he's an extremely formidable enemy. When they first met him, he had cast meteor swarm and earthquake in the same turn, reducing an entire village to rubble.

I don't want to straight up tell my players "he shrugs off the alchemical fire" because he is immune to fire damage, and I don't want to say "well he casts 2 spells this round and kills everyone"

Though despite this, I still do want to stick to rules as written as closely as possible. They know what they are going into when engaging this guy.

My question is, what should I do? most retarded redditors just say "well let them do it and see how it goes!" somehow implying my players will get a kick out of getting TPK'd almost instantly by an end game boss at level 5, on their 3rd session.

Theres always the route where he gives them a villainous monologue after "evading" the trap they laid, but i feel like that just is basically the same thing as saying "well your trap was pointless" sort of discouraging them to try something like that again.

Should I just make him send some weaker villains in his place so they can enjoy a real fight? the problem is the BBEG explicitly stated he will be meeting them again at this location, so if he doesn't show after my players spent a couple hours planning exactly how this trap would work I feel like they may be dissappointed once they realize the BBEG won't be the one taking it.
>>
Have the BBEG send an "advance guard" that falls for the trap and gets absolutely slaughtered.
After the fight is over send in the BBEG who will be suitably dispassionate/impressed/amused (as appropriate).
My thought process is it rewards the players with a trivial fight (make sure the advance guard has good loot) and also demonstrates that the BBEG is competent enough to send people to preview an area. But also cold enough to not care about their death.
>>
>>96590980
yeah this does seem like the best solution. initially i thought my players would feel like i'm being a sissy DM that doesn't want his "special boys" killed in combat, but im probably looking to deeply into it. they are gonna have fun as long as shit gets blown up.

I've really been enjoying reading through Runequest, so I don't understand why it seems so underrated in modern gaming.
There doesn't really seem to be much interest in the current edition compared to early ones.
I was hoping that there could be more excitement over its potential.
Especially with the changes coming.

How is the basic roleplaying universal game engine?
Is it actually good and lives up to it’s name? And how is it compared to 5th edition?
>>
RQG sucks and Glorantha sucks when played outside of HeroQuest because the lore is incompatible with the rules. I like Mythras a lot but TDM doesn't seem to care about vanilla Mythras at all, only Mythic Earth and Classic Fantasy. And at some point they errattad the rules so point buy is only 75 points which is extremely crippling to most character concepts. And doubly odd because again they love pushing Classic Fantasy where you get 91 points which is way too many. Very odd decisions.
>>96590765
Suffers from Call of Cthulhu syndrome where a bunch of the numbers don't do anything, and it uses the old confusing version of Initiative. I would just use Mythras with the magic systems stripped out for a generic d100 system.
>>
>>96590977
Is it still worth learning if one wants to move out of the 5th edition dungeon?
>>
>>96474663
Grognards are only interested in lore discussion and prefer to buy JC stuff on drivethrurpg instead of official rehashed material from 30 years ago with slightly better art.

There was a certain class of games, particularly for (Old|New) World of Darkness before they renamed it to CofD, that were really popular. Basically you would fill out your sheet as a starting character, then go before a Storyteller/GM that was like a DMV bureaucrat, who would verify that you made legal choices and would sometimes argue with you about if you need Firearms 3.

Then you'd be let in to the actual game. You'd have semi-freeform "scenes" with other PCs who did the same process, and occasionally, the ST/GM would show up and do a "scene" where the chips are really on the table, you can make real moves. You'd do XP requests and get standard XP quantities based on activity, basically attendance.

But then they kinda just disappeared in the late 2000s/early 2010s, right before the rename to CofD. I think there were games of similar structure for other RPGs, but (o|n)WoD was the big one.

What happened, man? Why did they fall out of style?

Guilty Conscience (An aura) is the source of damage, so Protection from Creatures wouldn't prevent it.
Pain for All can't target the creature it's enchanting, if that's what you meant, but it doesn't matter what is damaged, because it starts a combo
>Cast Guilty Conscience -> Cast PfA (Has to be in that order)
>Target whatever you want w/ PfA damage, it does not matter
>Uril sees this damage, and starts screaming and punching himself in the head (Not literally, it's the aura doing this damage)
>Takes damage
>Explodes damage outwards

1e Sidereals didn't have that so much as they had the power to hope they could slip by and not get killed by a Lunar if found out. Quoth the book, "Mistreating the character is mechanically easy but emotionally difficult." Also, a Lunar who does know better is completely unaffected.
>>
>>>Man, you Eclipse players sure are spoiled. You get to sanctify oaths, you get diplomatic immunity, AND you can learn just about any kind of Charm there is. And you're bitching about not being able to learn literally any Charm.<<<

>You'll notice how the developer seems strangely deaf to their complaints. =)

>Much Lunar magic is linked with their inherent power of changing shape. You could learn the Charms, but you couldn't use them, because you're not a Lunar. You're also not going to be able to learn Void-circle necromancy or Sidereal astrology. If you want to beat your game to death with a stick, hey, you all know the Golden Rule. However, I think the reason why those Charms are barred is terribly obvious -- it would unbalance things and it doesn't mesh with the unique nature of Lunars in the setting. If you don't like it, you can change it, but don't come running to the Forum about how broken the Eclipse Caste power is. =)

>>96590879
Yes, was it explained from where Eclipse's charmshare came from? The Doyleist reason, i mean, none of their caste book inspirations seem to be it.
>>
>>96590959

Dungeon World 2 released another version for public playtesting a few days ago: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Hp3f8laeI1bf-pRrwD9nXqkRxZAbB_PN

What do you think of it?

I am personally somewhat disappointed. The original playtest was actually trying to do something new with its subsystem for Defiances, its abstracted armor, and its lack of traditional damage and HP. The new version instead brings back Defy Danger (albeit locked into Constitution, despite being a catch-all move), concretely defined armor, and rolled damage and HP. I think that the new version is making too many concessions towards familiarity and D&D-ness.

Sup 2hu.

Not sure what your problem is with it. Not griddy enough for you?
>>
>>96585126
Apparently, according to the discussion over on the Big Purple, both versions are valid.

It's a double playtest sort of situation. They want to see which version players prefer.

Personally, I prefer the first option. The less D&D the better. If I wanted D&D, I'd play D&D.
>>
>>96590356
Dungeon World itself has too much D&D in its DNA to ever truly be divorced from it. Take too much D&D out and you've just got a weird fantasy game where you're constantly fussing with bonds and ambitions and conditions, but pretending that you aren't playing a class based fantasy adventure

Dead Man's Hand of he Emperor session:

Crackolytes had one sleep and rejoined the Arbitrator in charge while the Proctor-Laureate is stuck getting ambushed in the deserte. Seems like having killed Seth ruined someone's huge plans and whoever's in charge is just fucking the most shit up they can.
Arbitrator says we can possibly get one squad, the one "the regiment wants to get rid of", if we convince them enough, to go help the siege. We ask how do we convince tthem to help more and the possible answer is going into the Administratum HQ and talking with the Adept-Intercolutor bitch.Kms myself.

Tech Priest clutches the diplomacy rolls and makes good argument to let the mockery of a human let us borrow her astropath.

>astropath is a 12yo boy
>our gm sure likes child labour huh
>callidia gets called a sad girl

We are nice to the astropath child and engage in conversation, since he's kept locked away only able to hear everyone's thoughts. He sends the message since the guard is nearby, he tell them to send a forward squad to reinforce the abbey while the main force lands on the port and meet with us.
Hopefully this is all enough to convince whatever general or colonel on the way, to go fight the Fratelis Templar even if we have to directly spin it on being about the tithe.

2 days left since their actual landing on the planet. Time to vox the Abbey about the good(?) news, if the Abbey doesn't have a long range vox then Callidia is using Haxta's riding crop on the Canoness.

Well, despite the lack of responses, we did it. Just. The point system turned out to be mostly unused and keeping Forcyz at a holographic distance helped. I had some problems getting the Inquisitor into things without him beating the players over the head with his rosette until they decided that they could squeeze an inquisitor on port wander with the information of what they've done in Modren's defeat. I wish them the best of luck on that one. It was actually a lot quicker than I thought it'd be - we plowed through it over the weekend. Their big reward was a dune knockoff planet to settle, but they've already got a station and colony so we'll see how that runs - or if they bother at all.

How do you handle interspecies crossbreeding in your games?
46 replies and 8 images omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>96587669
How would you do it then? So that fast breeding races get/cause pregnancy more often and slow breeding races less often? And that some days two very different races just aren't going to make a baby no matter how they try?
>>
>>96587882
I was going to give a detailed suggestion for this but I got caught up analyzing the dice because I wanted to understand the exact numbers. Based off your description it sounds like the actual situation you want is: Low dice are more likely to fall pregnant than high dice (fast breeding), Highest odds of falling pregnant with someone when the dice are the same. In order to achieve that using a similar idea you could do 3dA = 3dB. I did some dice simulations and as far as I could tell that works as described though I can't give you a formula for the probabilities. 2dA = 2dB doesn't work super well for some reason.
>>
>>96590595
So aiming for an average instead of the same rolls? I'd imagine it drops all of the impregnation probabilities somewhat, with drastic effects between those using different dice. I had considered other ideas waiting on your reply, but I do like the 3dX and it affords further granularity between different races as you can assign different mixes of dice, or have traits to alter results for an individual such as low fertility adding an extra die to skew results while a fertility blessing may give "roll an extra die from your pool and pick three to total" for the next day or moon cycle or whatever.
>>
>>96590831
No. Not aiming for the average, rolling the same number. 3dA = 3dB, getting the same total number on both rolls.

>>96587882
If you want to go for something like this, the easiest way to control the odds is by shifting the range, either by adding a number to the larger dice, or subtracting from the lower dice.

I suppose one benefit to this is that you can start adding extra dice pool mechanics on top as you are suggesting. I do like the idea of a fertility blessing being 4dA choose 3 dice, just from a gameplay perspective. Though I don't know how that actually affects the odds.
>>
>>96590909
>average vs total
That's my bad, mistyped what I meant. But yes, same total for both rolls, just that at 3dX you're going to be looking around the middle of your bellcurve most of the time, which will change the odds greatly between different die types but at least it's not "all dice must have the same face"

>range and mechanics
I think I'd prefer to keep flat modifiers to various traits, but it does offer a simpler path than trying to mix and match die pools for every race.
As for the odds, it would be a bigger help to already fast breeding species but slower ones may take whatever they can get. Or there could be a curse version for cultists to lay on an unfortunate candidate. Fiendish Fecundity, target and all partners until next dawn roll an extra 3d6; as many dice as needed may be used or discarded to create a match but if any roll ever includes three sixes then impregnation is automatic and comes to term within 1d10 minutes with severe risk to the mother. This child is a half-fiend, or full demon if both rolls had three or more sixes. In other cases of impregnation the pregnancy is normal and child has only minor fiendish traits.

>mfw I finally got the last of my recurring characters' prompts rewritten to work reliably in Sora
This took way longer than expected, but I'm liking the results. To think I started in on this process just because Dall-E 3 wasn't able to do the pointed capirote-style hood I wanted for the new Inquisitor character I adding to my story last week. It's a very different style of prompting, but the lack of Bing's character limit is so nice.

For those who have been following the story of Salafié the Techpriestess, I'm afraid I won't have a chapter this weekend. Between IRL work stuff and switching AI models, I haven't had time to write this week, but it shall continue soon.

What are some tropes you have a ton of fun following despite being a bit cliche as a DM?

Here's mine

>Party is set off to find a bunch of artifacts around the world to help stop the lich by breaching his indestructible castle barrier
>The artifacts are actually advanced technology from the long forgotten past around space age tier and then gathering it together is them making a EMP rifle.
>Lich is actually a human in stasis playing up the title of Lich to make it more digestible to the medieval tech tier furries that now run the world that they needed to be genocide to make way for the hundreds of pure strain humans that are locked away in crypto stasis

I like the bar fight trope. I don't know why but I swear my players bond a lot during every bar fight.

Came here to say that. It always makes me giggle when my players try to seduce the villain girl.

The whole royal line of England is French, though. Really, his big issue was that William de la Pole talked him into marrying Margaret of Anjou, who kept picking fights with the Duke of York even though everyone already hated her.

>2-3 minutes of snappy dialogue between two goons clearing a room while debating the difference between articulation and talking, ideas and thoughts. This contrasts with how the pro-articulation side aims and the talkative ideas guy shoots the entire room.
I'd watch it.

>be DM at homebrew campaign
>decided to spice things up with a new trope
>introduce sexy elf NPCs, all mysteriously alluring and overly confident
>players get suspicious, but I push the trope hard, calling them "mysterious and enchanting"
>one player tries to flirt, NPC responds with bizarre pickup lines like "Are you a magic missile? Because you've just hit my heart"
>another NPC insists on giving everyone "elf-approved" herbal teas with suspicious effects
>players start noticing weird things, like their characters developing inexplicable crushes
>eventually the NPCs reveal they're actually cursed elf seductresses trapped in an enchantment loop, not just "sexy"
>players both confused and amused, lamenting they were tricked into a bizarre elf obsession

mfw I successfully make my players into Elves right after

>While
Fucking no. Has to happen before or after. Spoiling action by having a conversation over it is trash ass Disney dialogue. It only works when it's PACED.
