>What is Shadow of the Demon Lord?:
Shadow of the Demon Lord is a horror-fantasy tabletop adventure game that presents a world standing on the brink of annihilation. In this game, you and your friends play characters charged with fighting back against the spreading evil, whether that involves tracking down potent relics, exploring ancient faerie ruins, journeying into Hell to bargain with the Devil, or battling demons and the cultists who summon them. The system is setting agnostic and has a wide variety of possible details for your own world.

>What is PunkApocalyptic: the RPG?:
Another game using the Demon Lord Engine. Text trimmed for text length constraints.

>What is Shadow of the Weird Wizard?:
It's a high fantasy game running on the Demon Lord Engine. It's similar to SotDL, but without the horror elements and the power levels are higher.

Sanguis Essence (Blood Utility 3)
>Duration: See the effect
>Roll 3d6 + 3 to determine how many points of blood essence you harness. You retain these points until you complete a rest or you spend them. While you have points remaining, you are considered a creature of flesh and blood for Blood spells and you cannot again cast sanguis essence. When you cast a Blood spell and would take damage from casting the spell or from using an action granted by the spell, you can remove 1 damage for each blood essence you spend.
>Sacrifice: You can use an action and expend a casting of this spell to cast the blood harvest spell.
Blood Magic (Blood Utility 4)
>Requirement: You must be a creature of flesh and blood
>You take 1d6 + 2 damage. Your spilled blood fuels your magic, choose one of your rank 3 or lower spells. You cast the spell without expending a casting, even if you have no castings of that spell remaining. If you take 5 or more damage from casting this spell and if the chosen spell is an attack spell, you make the attack roll with 1 boon, you impose 1 bane on rolls made to resist the spell, and the spell deals 1d6 extra damage.
>Sacrifice: You can use an action to take 1d6 + 2 damage and expend a casting of this spell to begin twisting magical energy with your spilled blood. You remain focused on this magical energy for as long as you concentrate. If you remain focused and use an action to concentrate on this effect again, you choose a spell from any tradition that is of rank 3 or lower, or a rank 4 or lower spell if you take 5 or more damage from using this action. You then make a Will challenge roll. On a success, you cast the chosen spell. On a failure, the magic backfires and you take 1d6 damage per rank of the chosen spell.

Mass Blood Puppet (Blood Attack 4)
>Target: Up to five living creatures of flesh and blood within medium range
>Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute; see the effect
>For each target, make a Will attack roll against the target’s Strength. On a success, the target becomes compelled for as long as you concentrate. At the end of each round, the target makes a Strength challenge roll with 1 bane. On a success, it removes the affliction from itself.
Solidify Blood (Blood Attack 4)
>Target: One living creature of flesh and blood within medium range
>Blood solidifies in the target’s veins. If the target has Health score of 25 or less, it dies instantly as its blood stops and hardens. Otherwise, make a Will attack roll against the target’s Strength. On a success, the target takes 5d6 + 3 damage and becomes immobilized for 1 round.
A target killed by this effect has solidified blood stakes burst out of its body. Each creature within 1 yard of the target must get a success on an Agility challenge roll or take 3d6 + 3 damage.
>Attack Roll 20+: The target takes 3d6 extra damage.
Exsanguinate (Blood Attack 5)
>Target: One living creature of flesh and blood within medium range
>If the target has Health score of 30 or less, it takes a penalty to its Health equal to its Health and dies instantly as all of its blood is drained through its orifices, and you gain a bonus your Health score equal to the penalty. Otherwise, make a Will attack roll against the target’s Strength. On a success, the target takes a -6d6 penalty to its Health and you have a bonus to your Health score equal to the penalty. Both the penalty and the bonus last for 1 hour.
>Attack Roll 20+: The target takes an extra -2d6 penalty to its Health and becomes dazed for 1 round.
>Special: If you are a vampire, you can gain 1 blood point per 5 points of penalty to the target’s Health caused by this spell instead of the bonus to Health.
>>
>>96732644
Sanguine Control (Blood Attack 5)
>Requirement: You must be a creature of flesh and blood
>Duration: 1 hour
>You harness the power of your blood. Until the spell ends, you gain the following benefits.
>Blood Weapon - You can use an action or triggered action on your turn to take 1d3 damage and create a melee weapon of your choice that is made from your blood. Whenever you attack with a weapon created by the spell, you can use Will in place of the attribute you would normally use to make the attack. Attacks you make with the weapon against injured living creatures of flesh and blood deal 1d6 extra damage. When you drop a weapon created with this spell or the spell ends, the weapon reverts into ordinary blood.
>Blood Lance - You can use an action to take 1d6 damage to create an impaling solidified stream of blood in a line, 10 yards line and 1 yard wide, originating from a point you can reach. A creature in the area must make an Agility challenge roll. On a failure, the creature takes 4d6 + 1 damage or 5d6 + 1 damage if you take 5 or more damage from using this action.
>Blood Ward - When a creature makes an attack roll against your Defense or Agility, you can use a triggered action to take 1d6 + 1 damage and impose 2 banes on the triggering attack. If you take 5 or more damage from using this action, you impose 2 banes on all attacks until the end of the round.
>Crimson Regeneration - At the end of a round, you can use a triggered action to expend the casting of a Blood spell and heal 1d6 damage per rank of the spell expended (1d3 for rank 0 spells).
>Sacrifice: You can use an action and expend a casting of this spell to cast the blood magic spell.

Some of these feel way too situational like identify blood or are redundant like blood sense and blood tracking.
That's honestly probably why they just rolled Blood into Necromancy, I probably would have done the same or put some of the less evil ones in Water or something
Also just from ctrl+f and typing heal I am shocked none of these really heal. Most mages have little health so asking them to take damage like that for a spell seems like it isn't that good.
If it were me I would have blood do extra damage on injured creatures or power up if you are a living creature that is injured.
>>
>>96589903
HP is larger because damage goes way further due to the fact that there are various ways to "trade damage dice" to have access to various attack options. Multiattacks are good for dealing with large packs of smaller guys, but going all in with a single target makes you hit like a truck when dealing with sturdier enemies. Plus the death system is way better than StoDL.

This thread is for discussion and development logging.

It's easiest to learn with YGO/MTG experience.

It's not for sale. You can request a free physical 2-player 90 card set by following the instructions in the description of this video:

Here is an example of how all the cards are organized in the spreadsheet.

Raw effects have values based on weight table. These base values are based on the effects being the weakest version, tap (reduce stat by 1 to use), and once during your turn.

The base fibbonaci index of these effects are incremented if they have additional power by being:
- Instant (immediate resolution upon being added to the stack)
- Quick ("spell speed 2", only other Quick effects can respond)
- Non-Tap (no stat reduction as cost)
- One during ANY player's turn (2x+ effect output)
>>
File: example1-35.png (3.67 MB, 1203x1935)
3.67 MB
3.67 MB PNG
Here is a simplified example of a clever usage of the Thread for an advantageous play:

Board State (Player 1's turn):

Player 1 has 2 Orange Energires Frenned with “I Am The Dot”, and nothing else.

Player 2 (top half of board) has a Manifest Entity, “Knives”, and two Violet Energies.
>>
File: 998 Knives.jpg (41 KB, 520x717)
41 KB
41 KB JPG
>>96734766

Player 2's “Knives”, a Violet Entity has the effect:
“Identify a Projected Entity: Banish it.”

Style: White Triangle
White = Once during NOT your turn.
Triangle = Tap (Reduce stat by 1)

In plain terms, this means that Knives can Banish an Entity (on another player's turn) as soon as its put onto the Thread (but not after it resolves).

Remember, a Projected card is not the same as a Manifest card. A Projected card becomes Manifest once it resolves on the Thread. It cannot use effects, conduct combat, or be used as Frenning material until it resolves on the Thread.

Player 2 is basically able to lock Player 1 out playing an Entity, because he can just Banish it right away. In YGO terms, Knive's effect is sort of like a Trap Hole.

I'm pretty satisfied with my current painting skill and progress, but my basing ability is shit. How can I git gud? I have a good supply of basing materials, but my biggest problem might just be creative decision making. I can't settle on a theme and so far I've mostly just defaulted to shitty dirt wasteland.

foam works and is the weapon of choice for most model builders. You can carve the texture into the foam or build them brick by brick for a more ramshackle/ruined look.
You can add metal braces like from the AoS terrain with cardboard and use coffestirrers or balsa wood for the wood details. Common building materials for Mordheim buildings.
>pic via random image search/pinterest

I've also seen a guy who build molds out of foamcore, cast walls and arches in plaster and carved the mortar lines with a dentist's tool before it was fully cured. Looked great, but not something you can transport easily if you want a table's worth of scenery.
>>
>>96735502
>Is the army painter fanatic starter set a good place to start or should I just puzzle out what colors I'll want and buy them?
There are a good selection of colors in that set. You may want most of those in your collection eventually anyway if you start from nothing at all and you paint more than one army/scheme.
Generally speaking paint sets tend to sit on shelves longer than individual colors so sometimes you get a set that needs some serious elbow grease to mix up before you can use them. The other reason people are wary of sets sometimes is that you end up buying paints you have no use for. A set with primary colors, black, white, brown and some metallics is a reasonable slection though and you can't do anything wrong there.

>Also, I saw people say army painters paints weren't that great but that the fanatic stuff is good? Or should I get Vallejo or another brand?
The truth is that quality is less a manufacture to manufactuer issue than an individual paint to paint issue. There are some general differences in consistency between ranges and if you get into the weeds with mixing colors it can make a difference what you get, because of the pigments used. AP had a bit of a rocky start as the cheap alternative on the market, but their quality seems to have caught up to what most other brands offer these days. They are called 3.0 because they canged the formula of their paints that many times, so a lot of that criticism was about their previous products. Their washes are some of the best you can get. The metallic paints are usually where opinions differ a lot.

If you like them or not really just comes down to how you like to paint, so it's all very subjective. The truth is that paint is paint and all ranges on the market these days are good at what they are supposed to do.

Quick summary
>Classification: Low Techers: Primitive warriors torn from primal worlds. No tactics, just fury and axes
>Recruitment: Standard conscription: Average or above-average citizens recruited from all levels of society. (If Volunteers, Firstborn, or Lottery was rolled on the demographic table, you may select this by default)
>Civilized World: Comfortable but not soft, ready to fight to preserve and spread civilization.
>Volume: Population Strip: Almost all of the able-bodied are taken. The planet is dying, conquered, or exploited to extinction.
>Cpre unit: Line Infantry: The backbone of the Astra Militarum. Endless foot soldiers armed with lasguns and stubbornness.
>Adherent: Hold fast to the Creed and His will. About the standard for most regiments.
>Special Weapon: Traditional Weapons (Primitive): Axes, spears, and swords from their homeworld’s martial traditions. Ceremonial in appearance, deadly in trained hands.
>For the Emperor: Fervent belief in the Imperial cult and the righteous mission of the Imperium fuels this regiment.
>Figure of Legend: Veteran Guardsman: Seasoned soldier with multiple campaigns, known for battlefield wisdom and resilience.
>Deed of Legend Destroyed an enemy war machine with improvised explosives and sheer cunning.
>Greatest Achievement: Siege Engineering: Built fortifications and defenses that held back the enemy for months.
>Shame: Failed Defense: The regiment was overwhelmed while defending a strategic position, resulting in a shameful retreat or surrender.
>Shame: Friendly Fire Incident: Miscommunication led to grievous casualties among allied forces, creating lasting resentment.

What have you found to be the best way to handle paying for material components for spells like revivify? Are all casts purely paid out of pocket? Are other players ever expected to chip in for revivify, whether they are the ones being revived or an NPC?

My players generally all chip in what they can. As a player, about the same. If someone does something particularly stupid, they've had to cover it at times.

The way my group usually does it is by pooling group funds for basically everything, although that's hardly the norm.
Either way, pooling funds in advance to buy a diamond makes the most sense, because even if you're not the one who needs it, your ally probably got killed in the process of trying to help you. You don't get to avoid chipping in just because you're a Rogue who spends 90% of every encounter hidden in the corner.

And it's not like 300gp diamonds are a bad investment. Worst case scenario, you can still trade them for 300gp of goods.

also is there even a point in having them if they all look the same or just way too simular?
also half races are they even needed? (mostly just half humans lol)

i will say: 10 races is good number, if races are just humans but x dif. then no they're not fucking needed and are just tolkien slop. also half races would be fine if it wasnt just half human half x race all the time.

NTA.

There have been people here who think undifferentiated walls of paragraph text look like shit as long as this board has existed. Some of us were taught to skip a line between paragraphs and internalized the writing pattern (it's common in business writing styles, my boomer English teacher dad thought it was important when I was growing up, etc). Redditors tend to put a few too many of those linebreaks, but illiterate smoothbrains writing "reddit spacing" any time they see someone who skips a line between paragraphs made them look like pedantic dipshits in 2009 just as much as it does today.

Unrustle your jimmies, fa/tg/uy.

Well, I've been dead for just five years, and my Sire insists on making me operate mostly autonomously with the coterie I am not quite willingly managing. He maintains this approach to a reasonable degree, stepping in during incidents like the Palatine, where he anyways is compelled to act due to his rank. That's all good, by my personal assessment - I am a Ventrue, it is my right and my duty to be the one raising a sword when needed, as opposed to letting somebody else risk themselves by doing so.

While I do not have the right to disclose in-clan proceedings and customs, I believe it would not be a shocker to say that every Ventrue Sire approaches the matter of heirs slightly differently. Though there still are certain major lines of thought. Some do prefer a sink-or-swim approach, as to build up autonomy and independence and a lack of reliance on Sire babysitting, which is somewhat my case. Some instead prefer to very carefully groom and raise their Childe, letting them act at all in the night only after a decade or two of tutoring.

I've even met a fairly old Ventrue who were raised from actual childhood to the age of twenty-five by their Sire, then Embraced, then taught everything there is to vampiric life for somewhere in the ballpark of fifty years, before they ever walked in the night alone. The result was fearsome, to be sure, and exceedingly wise, as illustrated by that they did survive for centuries afterwards. So, Vinnie, in the grand scheme of things, certainly is a more sink-or-swim sort of Childe. Seems to be either a result of his attitude, or perhaps the cause of it. Could also be that his Sire is just not in the picture whatsoever, and he's just keeping it a secret to avoid letting it be known that he's an orphan? That's a risky thing to be.

I would like to talk about Draw Steel, a grid-based tactical combat RPG, loosely inspired by D&D 4e.

I just played some combats at level 8, and I really have to say: the Silencing weapon seems a little too good for its ability to shut down a plurality of level 9+ leaders and solos. Between the soulraker hivequeen, the fire giant chief, the war dog taxiarch, Aurumvas, Strategos Alkestis, the meteor dragon, Count Rhodar von Glauer, the lich, and Ajax the Invincible, only the fire giant chief and Strategos Alkestis are not reliant on magic-keyworded abilities. Everyone else here suffers an unceremonious shutdown from a Silencing weapon.
https://steelcompendium.io/compendium/main/Rules/Chapters/Downtime%20Projects/#stop-right-there

It feels a little silly for Ajax to be unable to swing his Blade of the Gol King just because it is magic-keyworded. Yes, he has more turns, but losing even one turn is bad for tempo.
https://steelcompendium.io/compendium/main/Bestiary/Monsters/Monsters/Ajax%20the%20Invincible/Ajax%20the%20Invincible/#tactical-stance-ajax-feature

Victims of a Silencing weapon cannot even free strike because their free strikes inherit keywords from their signature ability.
https://steelcompendium.io/compendium/main/Bestiary/Monsters/Draw%20Steel%20Monsters%20-%20Unlinked/#creature-free-strikes

Tier 3 results are not that uncommon at 3rd echelon and above, due to simple dice math. (This is to say nothing of the level 9 tactician's Grandmaster of Arms, which can get out of hand with the Rapid-Fire kit's Two Shot.)

Aside from the "just use the Bands only at level 5+, unbonded" strategy, maybe it is better to bond only the highest-Recovery-value PC and the lowest-Recovery-value PC. This way, they can still gain some benefit out of bonding, while not being as inconvenienced by 1-damage splashing from collisions and other little damage pings.

I have been told elsewhere that when the developers played through The Delian Tomb, with just two PCs bonded together with Bloodbound Bands, the bond caused them to lose more Stamina than they saved.

I stand by the strategy of using a Bloodbound Band unbonded, and mostly for the damage immunity 2 at level 5+.

in addition to what other people said, they didn't close a deal with a big publisher like Darrington Press did, which would have helped with everything, especially the prohibitive price point (not helped by the huge pagecount) and the physical books are only being delivered about now, so if any coverage was going to happen it would be about now.

My friend's group started using it instead of 5e. Looking forward to hearing how it went soon. With this and 13th Age 2e on the horizon, there's some neat stuff coming up.

Do you plan on hosting a Halloween themed Session this Month?

If so what do you got planned and do you think you're players are gonna love it?

Why isn't nyc in this artwork? Did they make a mistake?

Normally I would do a oneshot but can't guarantee enough people so just sticking with my normal stuff. It's pretty spooky by base so I don't have to do much to lean into it if I want to

Werewolves when done correctly are cool, same with ghosts. Skeletons and vamps are also great for some spooks

I personally love Skeletons, those fuckers can be used so creatively.

Currently running a campaign with a Lich as the big bad, but I plan on doing my Halloween session around Aliens abducting the Party to twist things up

I’d rather they refine the current edition than put more logistics into it.

But they absolutely need to release a starter box that isn’t such dogshit holy hell.

a KT-esque edition update where things are clarified and they add other things would be nice I think. Maybe universal equipment could spice things up?

I despise the new kharadron spearhead because it's such a downgrade from the old one AND it's basically identical to the old start collecting box except double the price now because fuck you. I mean how the fuck do you go from a frigate to a gunhauler and still end up with less minis in the box?! At least put one of the new kits in there.
>>96734719
In contrast to the above, the new idoneth spearhead is amazing. Insane value, and everything in there is useful. Reavers are decent, two sets of eels which are your bread and butter (and are dual build), and finally an akhelian king which is a great beatstick centrepiece. Clocks in at like a 40% discount, at least before price hike. The old spearhead wasn't bad either, you trade one of the eels for a shaerk, get thralls instead of reavers (definite downgrade), but instead of the massive king you get a normal foot hero which kinda sucks (even if I love the sculpt). So yeah new one is a definite upgrade. If you can find one of the old boxes, the two spearheads together are actually a damn good start to an army, just throw one big centrepiece in there and I think you're mostly there for a 2k list.

You'd think the man who wanted to stamp out religion wouldn't build everything to resemble religious architecture and design. I would have assumed that all came later when the guy is inappropriately deified.

the difference is subtle but its there
30k exists to be a specialist game in an already niche hobby
lots of people already do mostly buy marines at a significant scale so it makes sense for them to try to find ways to abuse that market
i could imagine HH marines probably sell more some stuff but i don't really know

i just with 30k was a different kind of game since it feels much more superfluous that way
>>

>religious architecture
It's called gothic anon.

>I would have assumed that all came later when the guy is inappropriately deified.
A lot of buildings other than churches were erected in the gothic style. It's a lot more interesting than most of what came before or after in Europe. Drawing upon it carries with it the connotations of a calcified society looking more to to the past than to the future, as well as evoking the passions of Romanticism. It is grandiose with excessive ornamentation, a superficial veneer over a crumbling society, and a classic example of form over function, except for its function of reminding peasants of their unimportance. If you only know it from churches, go and look it up. If you live outside of Europe if you find any example it will probably be a church since it do go through a revival but if you live in Western Europe shame on you for never noticing how many non-church gothic buildings survive.

Would D&D be better off if it had taken more influence from Robert E. Howard than JRR Tolkien like Gygax originally intended?

>Thing is, nobody ever seems to be able to level a critique at his writing besides "He use big words, me no like".
Let's be fair, someone in this thread went with 'He uses redundant words that are bad because they're superfluous and lavishly circumlocutory.'

Which is still retarded fag shit because you can go back and read his 'suggested improvement' then wheeze out a lung as you realize he's trying to give Hemmingway advice while being a Hemmingwanker.

Huh? Isn't that exactly what happened?
>Even as he wondered, the scene shifted abruptly to a jungle glade where N'Gora and nineteen black spearmen stood, as if awaiting someone. Even as he realized that it was he for whom they waited, a horror swooped down from the skies and their stolidity was broken by yells of fear. Like men maddened by terror, they threw away their weapons and raced wildly through the jungle, pressed close by the slavering monstrosity that flapped its wings above them.
>And from the tracks which led out of the glade and deeper into the fastnesses, Conan knew that the spearmen had fled, wildly. The footprints overlay one another; they weaved blindly among the trees. And with startling suddenness the hastening Cimmerian came out of the jungle onto a hill-like rock which sloped steeply, to break off abruptly in a sheer precipice forty feet high. And something crouched on the brink.

I know the former paragraph is technically a dream, but Conan's visions throughout his drug-induced dreaming are meant to be factual observations, they're even written in the same style as Howard does when he narrates backstory in Jewels of Gwahlur and On Hyboria.
