>>96766689>>96768715Also, considering Pact of the Blade is not the most optimized of the options (albeit being very decent), you might want to do the rest of the build carefully. Like how you'll deal with ranged targets if not taking Eldritch Blast, for example, in which case the pact does allow bonding with a ranged magic weapon even if it does not create ranged weapons as it does melee ones - although that is the case for 2024 only as the 2014 blade invocations did allow for ranged weapon creation.
>>96763890Thank you! Here's my DMNPC. Making it as unintrusive as possible, I only introduced him after they got the Sea Ghost and wound up being enlisted as privateers for Keoland. He's the quartermaster assigned to them from Seaton, who will generally stay back on the ship while they're running dungeons.I might make him a history buff so he can give a short vignette on what's generally known about a dungeon before they run it. I did it with Khundrukhar from the Yawning Portal.
>>96768763I could just reflavor eldritch blast as like shooting slime bullets or something at them.>>96768715I might go that way with warlock and rogue, right now I'm playing something similar, I'm aiming for 7 levels Rogue Swashbuckler and the rest warlock as I'm playing a pirate succubus who's been stuck in the mortal plane for too many years via planar binding most of her energies have weened out of them, so they are now trying to figure out what the hell to do now that killing and taking souls is... bland.
>>96768288How has Cunning Strike been for people playing in the 2024 Rules? Got some good use out of it or has it been going relatively unused at your table?
Why do Kobolds look like furries in 5e? In 3e they were little lizard guys.
How would you do a fishing minigame in tabletop? No, seriously. Have you ever tried to put in a mini game into your tabletop game where it's just mostly there for the players to engage and relax in whenever they feel like it? I'm not sure if there's a way to do this, and I'm wondering if this is a strange artifact of tabletop being inferior to video games, or if I'm just not clever enough to think of it.
>>96764488if you have an entire party of fishermen I could imagine making notes on each area about what fish (or other things in the water, probably meaner than fish) could be fished up, mixing together both real fish and ones you made up for extra worldbuilding
>>96764488If my players want to fish, I'll make fish tables for the setting. Then a skill check for casting the rod, then I'll roll on the fish table. Then, an opposed series of grapples against the fish to reel it in.
>>96769259And so the important thing you're wasting time on is-- combat I presume?>player wants his character to attackCool, roll a d20 and add modifier>Player 'I rolled low/medium/high'Cool, you fail/succeed. Roll damageThat's why I said what I said. If you can't even be arsed to do anything besides rote>roll, add, you win/loston something as simple as fishing during 'downtime' (btw this is a shitty, video-gamey way to parse portions of a TRPG game that attributes value to some and less to others when really the whole should be taken together as one instead of cut scene to scene) then why would you do anything more than that during the portion of the game that is literally just that mechanically. If Fighter wants to roll some low pressure dice and engage in the world and environment and maybe some character building chance and you're meeting it with an attitude that it's wasting time and here's the bare minimum mechanics- you're cooked.

Previous thread: >>96669987GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image (follow the URL to get to a folder with some files, read the files to get to the archive). Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.If you're wondering where to start:- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.Thread question: Is Reach important or is it all about how you use it?
>>96768172This. It's stupid and just makes certain weapons completely worthless until you have superhuman strength. The ‡ would only make sense on tools or other clumsy, improvised weapons. No one would wield a weapon that took an entire second to re-grip after every swing.
>>96769037t. has never played Dark Souls
My attempt at running a combat simulation resulted in an erroneous round by round report. Instead I had to duel the AI to make it understand at ST13 Thr is 1d, not 1d-1. We're making progress. It seems to take all available sources onlines (checked GURPS Lite as a final try to find out the real official value) so must be careful in the future about inconsistencies in values and/or rules.
>>96769350>expecting an LLM to understand numbers
>>96769037Most of the weapons that have that issue are in fact weaponised tools, or highly specialised. The maul is basically the mallet/sledgehammer used by medieval soldiers to assemble defences like stakes driven into the ground, which was sometimes used as a weapon. The greataxe is explicitly stated in Low-Tech to be a ridiculous heavy-metal fantasy style axe which would require superhuman strength to use effectively (e.g. Brainbiter from the comic Slaine). The scythe seems to be more like a weaponised version of the agricultural implement with the blade mounted perpendicular to the shaft (often seen wielded by necromancers and skeletons in fantasy art) than a warscythe with the blade mounted in line with the shaft (which I guess would be a duelling bill). The Gada is mostly a ceremonial weapon. The tetsubo and warhammer are actual weapons, but awkward ones in real life, used mostly by well armoured fighters who wanted to take down opponents in armour and who could afford to take a moment to recover after a strike because normal weapons would bounce off them. Note also that the tetsubo can be used with two-handed sword skill without readying after a swing (but with reduced damage). 'Full-size' polearms are absolutely massive (12-15' long) and would realistically be difficult to control on a swing. This is why they were mostly used to thrust and smaller versions were popular. The longaxe is just inexcusable though. It should absolutely not require a ready. I don't know what the writer was thinking there. There should really be a war-club too. You can kind of simulate one with a jo or quarterstaff or by playing weird tricks with wooden-bladed weapons, but it should really just be a big version of the knobbed club which works with two-handed axe/mace and doesn't suck like the maul.

So, looking at the update, I could use some input on some changes before I finalize them.-Raging River is gone, I guess in place of that I'll take Beast 1, since the claws and fangs were already in the image and this would make them more usable. I also considered Absolute Resonance, but the more I thought about it, the less I thought it fits).-Personal Perk changes didn't break anything for me, so I can keep them as is, with a small caveat:-Demi-Idolon is now Awakened stuff, and there is one free pick, so with one perk spent on this, I'd get two of those. Because of the fluff, I want to keep Alien, so that unshackles me from origin there. So I was thinking of keeping Awakened Bulletproof (although, with it being usable on normal skills, Freakish might be good too, but it might overlap too much with athleticism) and getting Stalwart Radiant for the second one (it sounds great for a tank focused on protecting his friends).-Items. Alien doesn't deprive you of freebies anymore, so I'd get the Object of Affliction. I'm thinking either of making it a charm, he kept from the Haunted Home Visit, or a hospital visitor pass. But that still leaves me with one more item pick, since we get more of those now. No idea really what to pick with that. Hideout? Become the rugby team captain. A moped? Janitor's Keys? Something else? -Another thing the Alien doesn't block anymore, is the option to take a second drawback. Maybe picking one now would feel cheap, but maybe it could be fun. Like Death Mark developing now, likely much to Ai's dismay since she still doesn't have one. Or Under an Evil Star, to throw in some supernatural origin to Ran's violent tendencies (and maybe work as a writefag hook to help me stop frauding)? Or Overconfidence as a way to highlight the conflicting dual nature?

>>96765017In my experience a contact is worthless unless it can directly facilitate a shadowrun. And I don't mean get you the shadowrun in the first place. I mean give you extra opportunities for runs you've already signed up for. Generally speaking, a man on the inside is the bare minimum for a shootless run.So by that virtue, fixers are extremely overrated. You will obviously go on runs no matter what, that's the whole fucking game. I'm also not a big fan of other dedicated shopping contacts.Unless the GM has told you that the campaign will revolve around a specific megacorpo or against a specific gang, you want to cast a wide net of 1/1s in as many major organizations as you can. And there's not much harm in doubling up because 1/1s can get burned easily when you put them to use.

>>96681978>Not to worry, CGL's shaping up to sabotage their other cash cow game Battletech, too. The playtests for their new edition and the oversimplified vehicles in the last kickstarter (only announced after the payments were locked) are smoke on the horizon. A new edition is one thing, but oversimplifying the spirit out of the game in order to cater to a 'modern audience' that would rather be playing something else at the expense of the people that actually like it in the first place? I really hope they'll take community feedback and not just from the yesmen they put behind closed doors after the demo-team coup. Hell, Randall seems increasingly more interested in making what Bryn likes, and Bryn isn't a BattleTech fan by choice but exposed to it by birth, seemingly more interested in 40K and other rules-light systems. What faith does it inspire when the people who make the game seem tired of playing the game they make?I feel like CGL could mangle BattleTech into an unrecognisable mess and BT grogs would still grumble and buy it all anyway

To start what makes a player, DM, or PC good in the first place? How can one improve making a character, playing their character, and DMing a campaign? Were there any examples of really good players/DMs you knew?
>>96765141>Second, ask your DM and/or PCs what people are wanting in the campaign.Building on this, fucking THINK about what you want in a campaign and VERBALIZE it. I keep asking my players what they want, get no answer, and then they leave because the campaign wasn't what they wanted.
There is only one correct answer. Show up to the game on time, on schedule, on a regular basis. This applies to both players and gms. Nothing tears a group down faster than attending only when you feel like it, or when its convenient to you. It pauses some/all of the plot, it keeps things from flowing smoothly, it forces time spent to catch people up or fill them in on details, and it shows disrespect toward everyone else's time and energy when they show up in good faith and (You) do not. I get it, real life happens. But flaking out is worse than never joining the group at all.
>>96761413>how to improveYou can start with killing yourself over starting a false thread that you don't plan to engage with in any way, just filling the catalog>n-no, this is realNigger please. At least change the fucking format.
Make recaps after each session with what happened, preferably on a map so you can summarize what happened last week or the week before last if you miss a session.Don't plan too far ahead, instead, use breaks between session to set up scenarios like this: https://www.latorra.org/2012/05/15/a-16-hp-dragon/ with custom maps, tokens, and mechanics BASED ON what has happened in the campaign so far. This allows you to utilize your creativity over time to keep the campaign interesting and makes the world feel alive.Get good at a whiteboarding program like Excalidraw if you're doing remote gaming because it'll be the best DM screen you ever had.Get good at an image editing program such as Krita, Photoshop, Gimp, or even 3D programs like Blender to make Maps/Materials you can print out(3D printing as well) and give to players. A "here there be dragons"-style map gives the party a great foundation for thinking about where to go and what locations have what without being too prescriptive and giving players a physical ring you resin printed and painted instead of just describing it can take the campaign to a whole new level.Speed-paints and contrast paints are very useful for getting models to a tabletop standard in a fraction of the time acrylics will take you. Dry-brushing can also be great for speedpainting as well for results that can look up to the level of acrylics if the model doesn't have too many fine, irregular details. When voice acting characters, practice by listening to movies or plays and parroting the character, then write down five or ten lines that character would say and try to replicate the voice with those lines. Additionally, hydrate an hour before the campaign and warm up your voice like a singer would.Don't worry about making original voices for everyone. just keep a bag of verbal ticks like slurring or Mhhmming in different tones after speaking to throw in and it'll distinguish the character.Show up on time, ready to play.
>>96761413Do not, please for the love of fucking Cthulhu, do NOT interrupt me when I am mid-sentence trying to describe the fucking room or situation. I am going to describe everything but you gotta give me 5 fucking seconds to do so. I know this shit is a sign of enthusiasm (I guess), but god damn it's annoying and stressful when players interrupt to ask questions when I am mid-sentence. It also blows my mind that I can be either listening to another player's question or be in the middle of answering a question, when someone else just starts talking (loudly) and asking their question. This shit isn't even /tg/ related, in normal conversations this would also be overwhelmingly rude and weird. Just fucking show up, try to have fun, contribute, ask questions, laugh when bad stuff happens, roll with it. Don't argue all the goddamn time, and if you do think something is wrong or you deserve a +2 or whatever, then PHRASE IT AS A GODDAMN FUCKING QUESTION INSTEAD OF ARGUING LIKE YOU'RE IN A POLITICAL DEBATE. >>96769084>I very strongly disagree with medium shields sucking as well. In the low position they cover you chest to thigh, while your head, your weapon arm and shoulder are uncovered, along with the lower part of your legsIn Vanilla, these are also conveniently easy to bypass. For example, attacking the Lower Leg means you will bypass medium shield coverage 100% of the time. And if it's high, attacking the groin will do the same.>ArmorYou can't use partial armor in vanilla, but also armor is a secondary concern, as someone who attacks you will already want a means of getting through it, and not even plate will stop a guy swinging a dane axe into your shins. Large shields have an easier time with this problem because of their greater coverage, as a shield + plate WILL stop that guy. And Small shields can avoid it altogether because of their block TN.>Small shields on the other hand are solely block devices, which I'm not a fan of since they might as well not offer AV with how little they leave covered up, with no way to expand the coverOn this end I also disagree. First, Bucklers do not cover the entire arms, just the hands and forearms. Second, all Small shields can fully cover the head in vanilla, which is a very bad place to get hit (You can survive a battle where you get your leg cut off, but not your head), and their TN is enough to make it worth it.Further, I don't think you really get how shield coverage works on a meta level. Competent opponents will try to avoid it entirely. In Vanilla, this just makes small shields king unless someone is shooting at you (But the ranged combat sucks in vanilla so that's a whole other can of worms) because your opponent will simply target whatever you don't have coverage for.In Revised, they will do the same, but with sufficient coverage you can sometimes make the opponent choose a target zone that's to your advantage (Like making someone swing for the legs so you can pull off a better Mobile Void).
>>96769229Increasing the coverage of a small shield wouldn't really change this, it would just make them slightly better in edge cases when they're already one of the best options (Anyone can buy a small shield and carry it around for minimal expenses and weight).Decreasing the coverage of other shield types would in contrast make medium shields not really change from being kind of sucky, but would probably make large shields borderline pointless. And, at the end of the day, passive AV is probably the most boring thing about shields. You either find a way around it, or you don't get to hurt the opponent. So I think they're fine as-is, and if there are any changes, they should have more ways to directly interact with the opponent or be interacted with by the opponent instead.
>>96769229>In Vanilla, these are also conveniently easy to bypass. For example, attacking the Lower Leg means you will bypass medium shield coverage 100% of the time. And if it's high, attacking the groin will do the same.I'm aware, I've been cracking at ideas on solving that.>First, Bucklers do not cover the entire arms, just the hands and forearms.Okay, I misread a bit the buckler covers the shield arm shoulder and the hands and forearm of the weapon hand. Since SoS treats the shoulder as part of the arm in the hit locations.>You can't use partial armor in vanilla, but also armor is a secondary concernYes you can. The SoS book explicitly says this. The daxe guy thing is a problem in vanilla, but I've already nixed that in my own homebrewing by stealing my friend's ideas. TOU gone, AP reduces AV instead of giving damage, half SDB, increase armor AV to compensate for no toughness, cap wound level to BS. It's a bit more involved than vanilla, but it solves the Daxe light saber problem. Even in vanilla, a guy with regular toughness and no mail on his feet still needs about 3 BS to level 1 him with a Daxe, 1 BS with a power attack, but that reduces your odds of hitting.>Further, I don't think you really get how shield coverage works on a meta level. Competent opponents will try to avoid it entirely. In Vanilla, this just makes small shields king unless someone is shooting at you (But the ranged combat sucks in vanilla so that's a whole other can of worms) because your opponent will simply target whatever you don't have coverage for.I'm aware of that, which is why I want to make shields more mobile and positioning less committal. Because vanilla RAW, you always know exactly what position it's in and what position it will stay in.I've been mostly unimpressed by revised. It's a lot of bandaid fixes when they really should have torn the system down altogether to rebuild it.
>>96769322>Yes you can.You can wear one piece, yes, but it's not any cheaper like you'd claimed.>I'm aware, I've been cracking at ideas on solving that. What's there to solve, though?>The daxe guy thing is a problem in vanilla, but I've already nixed that in my own homebrewing by stealing my friend's ideas. TOU gone, AP reduces AV instead of giving damage, half SDB, increase armor AV to compensate for no toughness, cap wound level to BSAP reducing AV is... The same as giving damage? None of this solves the "problem" here really, unless you make armor so high it's no longer possible to get through. At which point, you have an entirely different issue.>Even in vanilla, a guy with regular toughness and no mail on his feet still needs about 3 BS to level 1 him with a DaxeShouldn't, no. The Daxe does damage equal to regular toughness. Add in +2 from having average strength, and +1 from hitting with 1 BS, and it's already a Level 3 wound. But then, Vanilla's real problem were things like masterstrike and not being able to do enough damage with normal weapons, not Dane Axes or other big two-handed weapons hurting too much.>I'm aware of that, which is why I want to make shields more mobile and positioning less committalComment too long. >>96766494If it’s genetic, why wouldn’t the ruling class be composed largely or entirely of mages?
>>96766511Oh, hello. You must be new here, and that's fine. But you do need to spend some time actually lurking and learning how the board works before you start trying to enforce your vision of board culture.Decades of history has proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that when asking the board about the various disparate opinions of the its userbase, posting their own opinion changes the thread. It is no longer about your or my opinions, it is only about the OPs. Also, historically, and proven back when the IP counter still existed, the OP usually posts his own opinion after one or two others are posted. Please respect lurk moar and learn to respect the concept of anonymity.
>>96767236Then, please, tell us what you find fun in the context of tabletop games and characters who learn magic.
>>96767228Do you not know what magic is? It’s not glowing blue goo, anon. You may as well call the black blood of the earth (yes fossil fuels) a form of corruptive sorcery.Magic is psychological. It’s the the mind’s eye butting heads with phenomena.
How do I RP a lawful good Oath of Devotion paladin without being either that guy or a passive cuckold?
>>96757928>Ok, as a servant of Bahamut who is, among other thing, a god of mercy - am I obligated to show mercy to a dishonorable opponent who is only surrendering because they realized it's their only way out? That's the thing. You don't have to show him mercy as long as you can justify why you're not showing him mercy. If this guy is a treacherous piece of shit and you know he's not being sincere, you are perfectly justified in killing him immediately.
>>96762432Just because a character is LG doesn't mean that they are a slave to the law. >If this guy is a treacherous piece of shit and you know he's not being sincere, you are perfectly justified in killing him immediately. There's a lot of nuance to this theoretical situation, such as opportunity to provide another means of justice or rules of engagement, but I can largely see this as a possible decision by a LG character.
>>96762432>That's the thing. You don't have to show him mercy as long as you can justify why you're not showing him mercy. What I meant is what is a paladin supposed to do with people who try to abuse the fact he is bound to an oath?>example>find evil necromancer we're looking for>offer guarantee of fair and civilized trial if he surrenders>"Hahahaha I don't care I'm going to crush you like a bug">end up beating him>ready to finish him off>"Wait! You're a paladin of Bahamut you have to show me mercy!"Obviously you're required to spare an honorable opponent who you know is no threat if they surrender, but there's obviously many gray areas. What if it's just not feasible to lug around a prisoner and you can't let him go because he may become a threat again? What if the rest of the party really wants to kill off an enemy who asks for mercy? Is it enough to just protest and if everybody disagrees you just demand it to be quick instead of torturous?
>>96762625>"Wait! You're a paladin of Bahamut you have to show me mercy!"It's what you do to a tyrant who demands a 'fair trial'. You tell him 'the people will be your judge' and hack his head off after the cheering crowd proclaims his guilt.
>OPAlright, alright. What is an LG paladin supposed to do if a party member uses animate dead? Logic dictates I'm supposed to stop that, but that's kind of being an asshole to the player wanting to play a necromancer. What makes necromancy inherently evil anyway?
