Trench Crusade General - /trench/
Let's Make A Warband Generator Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>How do I get started?
All the files are free online, but are split between the website and the discord. They have all been collected here for your convenience:

isnt the entire appeal of trench crusade to kitbash your gw minis for this game?
>>

Not the entire appeal of the game, but kitbashing (using any minis, not just gw ones) is a big part of it and actively encouraged by the devs.
>>
>>96766693
>isnt the entire appeal of trench crusade to kitbash your minis for this game?
Not all, but it's a lot. It means that most armies will not resemble each other, and it's kinda a treat to see.
>>
>>96766693
getting to customise your warband with its own quirks and features is a big part i reckon

You lost the plot here. Giving them your money to play other games is extra sad ngl.

I went over to the 30k EA stuff when 2.0 dropped and have been messing around with making fluffy things there since. I might also get some spessh ships for battlefleet heresy.
>>
Does a barrage (X) weapon firing indirectly roll X+1 dice to determine scatter range or X dice to determine scatter range?
Also, what happen if a blast attacks misses but the scatter die is the target symbol?
>>
>>96768035
Yeah lol. I genuinely can’t remember the last game I had of 2.0 without a contemptor/leviathan. Outside of the “obviously new army built from the launch box,” I’m seeing a lot more variety. People are running stupid and crazy lists and it’s great to see outside of the few exceptions in 2.0 like nl and ws bike lists
>>
>>96768325
X dice, and you still scatter following the arrow emboldened on the hit symbol

I wonder what put them off, do you think it was the AL spamming Fulmentarus for most of 2.0

Male human fighters can have a ton of backstory and flavor. I've made a human fighter that is the son of ancient royalty for instance, and has a hint of a romantic pairing with a mysterious girl he's had a crush on ever since he met her when he was six. But even the classic "farmerboy turned soldier" male human fighter can have excellent backstories. I mean hell, look at Luke Skywalker from Star Wars.

>>96767018
Naw, I can confirm from playing said male human fighter, who I've given around a millennia of backstory surrounding the circumstance of his family - I've only had the story been engaged with once. I found them pretty fun to play out of battle regardless, since that's just personality and character, but once you get into a fight it's mostly just spamming the attack button.
>>
>>96768295
>Male human fighters can have a ton of backstory and flavor
Key word "can"
Guess what doesn't happen in 9 out of 10 cases.
>>
>>96768295
Besides, I don't give a flying fuck about backstories, I want a player who isn't sitting by the table, doing fuck all and having to be almost forced to speak up or participate. Why even occupying the spot, if you don't plan to play?
>>
>>96768310
This, what most male human fighter fags don't realize is that the stereotype "fighters are boring" doesn't come from the class. It comes from years of the most boring people you know playing fighters.

I'm not even talking about a lack of backstory, because that really doesn't matter. But a total lack of attention, initiative or involvement. Mostfighterfags just exist at a table to bloat the enemy CR limit and nothing else

You ever wonder why there's so much 'church bad' stuff? Like you'd think that given how fantasy deities demonstrably exist and do indeed grant supernatural powers, there would be less basic-ass iconoclasm.

Iconoclasm isn't against church or faith, it is against idols, condemning them all to be false. Its morality is that people who think a picture of Christ is capable of miracles is attributing the miracle to the object at least in part and not fully to Christ, etc.

One suspected origin of the doctrine was from Greek Orthodox Christians who lived near the Saracens and observed the piety behind calls to not depict god or the prophet and then thought "damn my neighbors do go hard over that heirloom crucifix of theirs, they treat it as magical. Maybe that's a sin."
>>

I seriously downplayed the importance of this card for a Witchcrafter kit until I got back onto the Witchcrafter grindset. It should be no surprise that a card that gives you instant access to your main deck bosses in response to getting ash'd is good, but just being able to put Haine on the field to insulate you from stuff like Imperm and Veiler while you're setting up is pretty freaking amazing. I can probably stand to make the Witchcrafter parts of my deck a lot more compact because of this card.

Has your party ever had an session where, you know, you just shoot the shit.
'The Sea Wyvern's Wake' was basically an extended travel session, even if it did have a lot to do.

Second this, but for me it was that the characters reflected their players in that they have no personality, hobbies, or interests outside of combat. For that particular group I learned that they were only good for dungeon crawls.
>>

>our characters were fundamentally incompatible with each other.
The fuck is this even supposed to mean? Other than some newfag shit it tune of "oh woe me, we didn't have a single, unified goal across the party".
This is literally the whole fucking point of playing those games. If you have entire party that's single-minded and driven toward a single goal, you might unironically just play a cRPG.

Seems self-explanatory to me
>Elf: I fight for my tree
>Dwarf: I fight for fuel to burn elf trees
>Orc: I fight for strength to defeat dwarves
>Human: I fight to get revenge on all orcs because they killed my parents
>Halfling: I hate fighting
>Gnome: Once I have enough cash I am funding a project to genocide halflings.
Unless you're lobotomising your character to get along there's no getting along.
>>
>>96759434
I feel like "what does your character do when they have nothing to do?" is an interesting question that more players should explore, but it's not something to fill an entire session with.

Having a look at it now and considering options:
Rogue Trader's ability to pull wargear cards (minus character specific) from anywhere could definitely make things interesting if you want to really tool them up in a weird way. Or just an unexpected combo. But it's also just very handy for characterful bits.
The Preacher character could be quite interesting, cheap and comes with a conversion field (handy blinding effect in some cases) and a wargear card so you can probably do something cheeky with that but also just have them for utility.
They get some cheap scouts which is good for just a variety of things even if they're not particularly killy being only humans.
And for the general wargear list; no power fists and no power armour in general wargear is interesting but you do get shuriken pistols and catapults which are always nasty, could be given to a character.

You don't get many Rogue Trader specific units, and I would want to take them and tool them up a bit for flavour, and definitely make use of the support weapons, but I think the bulk of a force would be cherry picking some bits from the Imperial Guard, Space Marine armies and agents, like grab a tooled up assault squad or some veterans with an autocannon for a really solid adaptable core unit, or maybe some stormtroopers, an assassin, that kind of thing, use a bunch of tarantulas for the heavy weapons...

It's kind of difficult to think what'd work really well together with so many options on hand but there's bound to be some good ones. But also potentially a little too specialised, a lot of the army is still (unless you really lean into the Marines part) basic humans and will need some fodder to screen the specialist units. Maybe thinking of it like a guard army with a bit of extra edge/space marine allies is the key? Assuming you focus on taking all the optional Rogue Trader specific units that is. Lot of options.

Having authored the Austrian material in it's first incarnation, and now seeing some of the playtest data and feedback from the thread generally, the following would be recommendations for revision to address some of the issues.
GENERALLY
It seems to be acceptable to lower the silver costs for the most of the follower units, rather than buffing the stats. As was raised in a previous thread, the initial proposal was largely of a military nature, and the book could axe several units that seem superfluous. Keeping in the new additions, Academic Apostate, Anomalist, Teslakanone, etc, there can be a bit of trimming in the followers. The Unterjaeger could be axed entirely, as it was initially a riff on the Subterranean Grenzer that was part of one of the original charts. The Landwehr Infanterie would also fit in this category, as it seems to share a position with the Austro-Hungarian mystery meat that, again, appeared first. The Skoda could be axed similarly, as the thread seemed to appreciate the Teslakanone as being more appropriate and sufficiently 'Agarthan'.
SPECIFICALLY
The Leyden Rifle v. Smiljan Carbine Issue.
I think the Smiljan fits better in the 'weapon matrix'. The grenades seem to be critical to a more aggressive game plan, so they could be renamed if that's a concern.
The Geballte-Ladung seems unnecessary. While it would historically accurate for the Austrians to eventually use something of this nature, we have the anomaly/Leyden grenades already available, plus vanilla dynamite.
Serbian Sapper can be cut, as there is a generic mercenary option available that could fulfill that role.
>>96695954
If a profile could be made for the Maximiliana Municipal Police, it could fit quite well.

Trimming down the book will help make list-building a bit less mind-wracking. The number of overlapping rules and complexities, insofar as the inbreeding/ethnicity charts are concerned, should remain, but possibilities for simplification can remain open.
>>
>>96768145
ON THE MATTER OF ANY SUBSTANTIVE CHANGES
An often overlooked aspect of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, aside from the pop-history 'ethnic soup' understanding of it, is it's development of an extremely competent green-water navy between 1870 and 1918. While many know the famous Austrian victory as Lissa against the Italian fleet in the Adriatic, many overlook the k.u.k Kriegsmarine's development of coastal defense ships, torpedo boats, and destroyers. If the axing of some of the units from the Austrian book prompts the development of a hole where a unit could/should be, an appropriate figure from the navy could fill it. The Austrians never formally created a Marine infantry formation, but something could be conjured up out of the Agarthan situation. Their large colony being situated on the frontage of the Dalai on the 4th could be sufficient justification.
ON AUSTRIA AND THIS THREAD'S GREAT HUSK DEBATE
There seems to be some consternation regarding the scope and impact of the Ottoman husking and the necropolis event. It would be appropriate to limit the scope of the Entombing/Great Husk Crisis to something that could be contained without distracting from the great game of Agarthan colonization that is the true heart of the setting. Sorting out the 'mechanics and physics' of husking might resolve the issue. What might be manageable is attributing husking to a phenomenon like bacterial/viral infection. Something that would need to take hold in a body before it would be subject to 'rising again'. This prevents the giant, open-air graveyard that the hills and fields of the Balkans, filled after hundreds of years of war between European powers and the Ottomans, from becoming such an issue that other great powers would focus the entirety of their policy on containing the matter. If you want to scale up the danger/reach of the husking 'plague', attribute some kind of cordon sanitaire against the Turks by Austria/Russia/Britain/France/Italy/Ethiopia.
>>
>>96768145
>>96768249
Such a cordon may be too close of a riff on the American PACT organization, so that sort of suggestion should be vetted by the thread.
ON THE MATTER OF A TIMELINE
It should have been done quite a long time ago. While there are those that believe keeping the timeline 'open', such that narratives can be composed without being constrained by an establishing canon, it would seem that there is a history of argument in this thread and prior threads that could have been resolved by presenting a unified timeline. The detail of this timeline need not be tremendous. The appropriate sequencing of events would be more helpful than pinning certain events to given dates. Dates for critical events should be established with greater detail and accuracy that the emergence of certain trends. Annexations of territories, establishment of colonies, development of key technologies, these sorts of things should have a more specific set of dates. Philosophical movements, population growth, more nebulous/arguable trends and forces should be left more open.

I didn’t describe it well. It was a chasm with a rope bridge over it. Rushing water could be heard down the bottom. They were talking about how to climb down because they knew the dragon lives in an underground lake. I didn’t make the dungeon it’s just Forge of Fury

The /btg/ is dead! Long live the /btg/!

What do you look for when buying dice? Coolness factor, edgyness, functionality? What's the coolest dice you own? The shittiest.

Different sets for different systems. Two sets of D&D dice, some d10s for UA or White Wolf, d6s for Shadowrun, GURPS, Feng Shui and some goofy dice for DCC.

Idk depending on the army you play having dice that roll the 3/4 side consistently over the 2/5 side would be really good. I think I have a couple bricks of 2/5 weighted Chessex dice that I use for Orks that make me pull off statistically improbable amounts of 5+ shots and invulns/fnps. And at the numbers I roll them it'd only take me a month or so to get 1000 rolls.
