People always shit on 4e, but at least it gave us cantrips so spell-casters wouldn't be totally worthless at low levels, something that many future tabletops stole from it...

Yes, a commentary on 4e by Mr. "You can't shout arms back on!"

You can't Cure Light Wounds them back on either but that never mattered to that ass in the first place or the people who listen to him.

How do I write a villain who is always two steps ahead?
18 replies and 2 images omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>96911985
IMO he knew how to hedge his bets. A lot of it was more than luck.
>>
>>96910674
Write a villain who is three steps ahead. Then, remove one step.
>>
>>96910674
Write the adventure around the villain's plan. He should have all the pieces almost lined up, with a back up plan in the event of a setback. This way the villain can fail forward, still moving on with his plan, just in a reduced or more arduous capacity. Stealing some mcguffin or killing an important npc will still feel like a win to the party, just not a victory. This also leaves room for the party to fail forward. The party might not have stopped the current phase, and the end might be harder, but they can still stop the next step with what was learned.
>>
>>96911538
>Does every thread on this board need to require the words "in my ttrpg"?
Nah, it would just be nice if more of them were about tabletop games.
Any answer to a question about games should boil down to "that's how the game works" not "that's how I wrote the outcome".
>>
Every now and then make the guy show up, kill someone or something and say some cryptic phrase.
The players will come up with an explanation that's likely better then yours. Pretend that was always the case.

Que Retardado Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>How do I get started?
All the files are free online, but are split between the website and the discord. They have all been collected here for your convenience:

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. I hate Foundry because it's over-complicated, clunky, and because useless things like LOS and dynamic lighting are baked into the product. But, everyone seems to love it. What am I missing? Am I truly the only GM who despises line-of-sight and sound effects and all that video game shit? I don't want to carefully curate an experience, I want to run a game.

I'm sorry some of your players are shitasses, anon. I only play that game through Foundry these days, so we just use the VTT sheets. But way back before Comp/CON I ran the game live, using paper sheets, and it wasn't bad. Maybe you can insist on going analog again, if the screens are becoming a distraction.

>>96900061
Sometimes, it is because saying "this thing happens" will prompt an argument about "but I should be allowed to roll!" And the GM would rather not have that argument. Maybe this isn't even railroading! Maybe the players are just babies. But it is usually about railroading or protecting some pet NPC.
Sometimes, it is because the GM's best friend has been pouring his heart and soul into the session, but the dice keep kicking him in the nuts. The GM wants to give him a win when things are at their most dire. But it is vastly less memorable, less fun, if the GM just says "nah, you hit him because you're cool."
I have never done either of these. But I can understand the temptation.

There were mentions of an appointment with the powers that be to introduce me, but that's it. I've yet to meet any kindred beside my sire, and there's no convenient notebook listing the name and contact details of the local personalities, of course.

What now? First priority seem to be making myself known to the city ruler?Should I try to find other kindreds and hope they're willing to help rather than murder me? Lie low, wait for some acquaintance of my sire to knock at her door and hope -they- are willing to help?
>>
>>96911232
Well, I shall be sure to stay on my toes and see if I can find anything of significance related to the number 55. Merci, monsieur.

>>96911241
Congratulations on your unexpected bonus lucre. If you ever pass by St. Augustine I should introduce you to Baron Christopher: he always has a job or two for morally flexible Kindred with particular sets of skills like yours.

Hope you continue to have fun. I use a combination of characters and events taken from a tabletop chronicle and a LARP I played in for inspiration.

>>96912495
I'm curious if you can expand upon the first and fifth insights you presented, Monsieur Brainclot.

Story hooks and interaction are always appreciated.

>>96912770
I recommend you look for a haven of your own and gather whatever you can take with you from your current location. If your sire met an untimely end at the hands of an unknown party, they may be trying to find her haven and you don't want to be caught alone. After you've secured a new shelter, you can begin looking for the powers that be to introduce yourself.

They’re based on the og mining suits that terminators were built from and require a lot more effort to pilot in exchange for a lot of bulk. Vulkan upgraded them with better reactors and shielding to handle more energy intensive weapons. In game they primarily wield large disintegrator cannons or mechanicum style plasma bombards which are basically plasma artillery guns. They also wield short range particle shredders which I imagine are horrific warcrime weapons. Additionally they commonly have deep strike beacons built in so all but their base variant has an easy time ds

>>
>>96912797
Wait, so you're maining the card but you're not sure what you're trying to hit with it? Maybe take a step back first and ask that question before running the card in your main.
I'll teach a man to fish here with you. Go to a meta deck list and results aggregation website like yugiohmeta or ygoprodeck and look at their deck lists. From there you can determine what cards are being played and then form your staples list with it in mind. You'll also see what they're playing in order to play into such a meta too. All assuming the lists are public.
As an aside, we're still waiting for results after the recent "emergency" list they dropped so it's a bit up in the air at the moment without data from any big events yet.

>For Empire Alone, we looked at doing a Wolf OpFor for that box, but Catalyst had already planned three ForcePacks of Wolf-related miniatures, and we all felt it was enough. So I looked at what else is in the sourcebook and decided I would really like to see the Capellans as the opposing force. This box set is called Wrath and Reprisal, and it’s set in Capellan space along the border of the Duchy of Andurien.
>The third box will be based on Dominions Divided. There are two big chunks in this sourcebook. One is the Federated Suns/Draconis Combine border and the taking of New Avalon. The other big chunk of that book is the Ghost Bear Civil War in the Rasalhague Dominion—the dispute between the Joiners and the Deniers as to whether they’re going to join Alaric Ward‘s new Star League. So we ended up with the Snowblind box set. You get inserted into the civil war and have to deal with trying to keep the peace between two different sides of the Ghost Bear touman. It’s a nightmare contract full of ethical gray areas, and I love how it’s turned out.
>And finally, the fourth one is based on IlKhan’s Eyes Only, which is brand-new if you haven’t read it yet. Fantastic sourcebook—lots of really cool stuff happens in there. One of the new players that takes a bigger, more center-stage role in lKhan’s Eyes Only is the Raven Alliance—the Clan Snow Raven/Outworlds Alliance mashup. Box four is called Controlled Burn. You’re defending a planet on the border of the Federated Suns and Outworlds Alliance against a Snow Raven invasion.
So CGB gets 3 boxes then

What are you even try to argue about? they have their fucking machine, and the production was being hogged by the new game, which require a fuck tons of sprues, that's why the release was ass. No marines were affected by this. In fact, they released warcry which is the single biggest side game launch in GW history, 1 single release equal to 2 years of Necromunda release.

Cool to see the chorfs get their promised rules and battle traits and blessings being added to matched play properly rather than being hidden away in some random expansion book and WD issue as optional rules. Not a fan of the nerf to universal abilities without an accompanying balance pass to faction abilities though, there are too many warbands that are stuck with just absolute trash faction abilities that are basically forced to rely solely on those universal abilities.

I'm running an into the odd campaign and I'm going to use some elemental magic as a base for the magic system.

It will have all the classics, but I want to add some more obscure or unusual elementals too.

So far I got the ideia of dividing wind and air into two different elemental groups.

One pushes stuff and makes tornados

The other is more like suffocation, oxygen and oxidation.

Flesh is a cool one and well as blood.

Soul energy (green) Life energy (red) spiritual energy (blue) and occult energy (purple)

Wood/plants

Making variations on ItO's Arcanum that are still light and work with the system's design intentions is an interesting exercise and way to adapt the game back to a more traditional fantasy dungeon crawl without having to go full Mythic Bastionland levels of involvement.

for me, it's the nail element

>>
>>96910823
Ok...Well I'm going to tell you straight up, "occult" is not an element, it would be more of a description or category that elements fall under or the means of using soul/spirit/life and flesh/blood and darkness/shadows in a way that is different than divine, or the method in which the "energy" is extracted.

How are you even differentiating soul, life, and spirit? You might be able to distinguish life in some way, but soul and spirit are going to be very hard to differentiate in any meaningful way. All of them are the "supernatural" aspect of life, where is the physical "Body" besides blood/flesh (no bone?) or "Anima" aspect?

Same with darkness and shadow, unless you are meaning to say darkness takes on malicious properties and shadow is more deceit, stealth, or possibly illusionary.

How is steam distinct from, as opposed to combined with, water+heat? Where/what do gasses and mist do if not under the domain of air, with smoke really being carbon particles (usually caused by fire) in the air? Fire and oxidation are really processes, not actually "things". Fire and rust are typically what happens when things are oxidized, fire being it's own element and rust usually being considered either part water or metal element.

Idk man. I like elements too, but some of these imo just don't work well.

Some sort of triple metaphor, like triad or you know.

This is a great idea and a nice gen, though colors look a tiny bit overcooked. What is your CFG at?

Hi anon, sorry was in bed.

I'm not familiar with NAI's interface but from what little I understand it would be closest to one of the more "on the rails" interfaces like RedForge, so I would tentatively recommend that for NAI veterans.

Comfy is a different beast, being node-based rather than menu based. But if node-based programming interests you I can give you a nice tutorial and a sample workflow to get you started. The upsides are that Comfy is a bit more efficient on resources and the nodes make for very flexible, near unlimited variations of workflows.

Sorry ReForge, not RedForge. It's the follow-up to Forge and I recommend it because I think Forge has stopped receiving support

Half of the landscape/aesthetic blogs on tumblr are obviously AI now.

All the new Starter sets contain a list fit for an initiation game.
They are not perfectly balanced for a "real" recon game as Empire and GAR are both above the 600pts limit while Rebel and CIS are below but they are matched well enough in power level and activation counts. What's cool about these starter list is that they use all the model in the box and gives most of them upgrades which helps with grasping the rules.

Your minis should mostly be good (except for Palpatine and IRG, rip in pieces) but you may need to print new cards and you'll need:
>circles with a diameter of 2 inches for objectives
>range ruler or measuring tape for the 3-inches contesting distance and some other rules

I'd personally like to use IRGs as imperial agents. There is enough weapon variety in the old kit to account for all the agent weapon options
