This is the most over-designed, micro-managed, table-top wargame bullshit I think I've ever seen, even worse than FATAL.

Did someone really spend weeks putting this together all as a joke? I can't imagine a single person playing this, taking the time to learn the rules, build characters, set up a world, and actually run something coherent enough to be called a game.

Been on a JRPG kick lately and finally decided to look over some of the "TTJRPGs".

I've read through Fabula Ultima and it honestly seems quite fun, surprisingly. I especially like how simple it sounds considering you get quite a few options to build your character. Haven't played it yet though, so it might devolve into some ridiculously broken minmaxing, IDK.

I've also stumbled upon Legends of Akeroth, which sounds kind of cool from what they're putting up in their Backerkit, but I'm unsure about it, having no way to look at the books contents or even demo (would greatly appreciate if anyone were to share anything). It wouldn't be the first time I get burned from buying into hype and empty promises. I'm not that big on dice pools and built-in "success with a cost" systems, but it seems to have a section on solo play which is pretty cool.

Have any of you tried either of these?
Can anyone put forward some recomendations for TTRPGs in the style of JRPGs?

As others have suggested, I highly recommend you check out Sword World it's coming out officially this year. I saw Legends of Akeroth and tempted but have too many other games coming in that I might wait till it comes out before I look into it. (I already backed Wight Box, ACKS, Grand Odyssey, The Broken Empire, DC20, and waiting on the official Sword World 2.5. Many after it comes out and it sticks the landing.)
>>
>>97705525
That's a shame. You'd think someone would say that scarborn is abelist in how it portrays having "scars" as being evil.

>>
>>97705156
Read the last sentence where OP basically tl;dr's it for you
He's talking about tabletop games in the style of JRPG's, which includes non-japanese games, but also japanese games since vidya has had an influence on tabletop RPG's there, since they came only shortly after/during the Dragon Quest boom
>>
Sword World isn't a TTJRPG, it's a JTRPG. The difference is a lot bigger than a lot of people want to recognize.

i think it just may be a different style than what you enjoy. i don't think the game would function without the strict deck size limit, and choosing what player to remove is another moment of meaningful decision.
if you played with literally no expansions at all, then yes it's very straightforward. I personally have barely played without at least the first few expansions, so I can't really comment there. I think some of the players have a lot of personality, after having played in a league with experienced players over a number of seasons there are a lot of standouts to me. It definitely isn't a combo kind of game though - most of the time. some players will reward you with a string of hits for having played a bunch of Naturals, or cancel all hits if you've played enough cyborgs. I guess it's more like synergy than truly combo-ing. it fits the sport theme, but that's no positive if you don't care about the sport
anyways I feel like you'd enjoy Star Trek: Captain's Chair with what you value in deck builders - have you tried that one yet?

FedSuns has the Catholicism, but otherwise I'd probably go with the Marian Hegemony. Also, not to be a wokefag, but honestly, when it comes to white supremacy and Christianity, you should really pick one or the other. While there are elements of the Bible that can certainly be interpreted as supportive of things like separatism and (certain kinds of) slavery, ultimately it's a universalist religion that is at best indifferent to issues of race-consciousness. Have you spoken to your local priest about your feelings on race issues and how they may impact your relationships with God and with the community of the faithful?

The RotS made some designs that are basically "what if we rebuilt these Celestials with regular tech?" Like the Kheper and Uraeus. The Draconis Combine went a step further and named their new Archangel inspired assault mech the Tenshi which is Japanese for "angel" which is surprisingly obvious. You're not going to find anybody straight up using Celestials, either because they can't use the cyborg cockpits or because even the slightest suspicion you're a surviving Blakist will summon a mob with pitchforks and autocannons.

The release schedule for D&D 5.5E in 2026 in looking like:
>two Ravenloft books about horror
>Arcane magic splat
>Red Wizards adventure
>Surprise thing in September which might be Dark Sun 5.5E
>all niche splats and settings
This is really starting to feel like the edition end-days of TSR or 3.5E, when there wasn't that much left to print and the publisher had already decided to make a new edition.

So, D&D 6E in 2027?

I do. It fixed alot of little things with 5e that needed fixing (though it did fuck some other stuff up).

Shouldn't have been a full fledged new edition though. That's straight bullshit and corporate greed.
>>
>>97692465
My DM doesn't allow it but it looks like the only reason for that is because he doesn't want to bother reading through 5.5E's changes
I think some spells and classes might be better but that's my opinion
>>
>>97692465
No, it was mostly just shit.

(They did have some good sub-classes, and change some mistakes they made in 5e. However, fixing a small mistake that a common house rule would solve isn't worth making a .5 especially when it one step forward and 5 steps back.)

Can a martial based character be the BBEG?
87 replies and 9 images omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>97699742
>Okay then they aren't BBEGs.
That other anon is kind of missing the point with his real world comparison. Nobunaga could be considered a real world BBEG but he probably wasn't that more skilled than the average soldier when it comes to fighting.

For a purely Marital BBEG to work you'd need a ton of support for him. People that protect him and genuinely believe in his cause. His kingdom would need to be designed to prevent scry-and-fry tactics, he'd probably have casters putting up dozens of contingency spells, and would be loaded with magic items of all kinds. Honestly a BBEG Martial should be a threat in the same way old DnD Martials were, it wasn't their personal fighting ability though that was very good but the people that followed them.

Sadly with the way that DnD is setup there's just no way to have the Martial BBEG be a credible threat on his own. Even if you gave him the Sword of Perfect Anti-magic he's always 1 round away from being just a guy if someone manages to take it.
>>
>>97705171
>Sadly with the way that DnD is setup there's just no way to have the Martial BBEG be a credible threat on his own.
Exactly. In fact, with the way magic works in D&D, it's hard to take a campaign in it seriously at all. The magic is more ridiculous than in Harry Potter.
>>
>>97705171
You don't need to build NPC enemies around the same restrictions of PCs.

>>
>>97709914
That's not what we're trying to say. The fantasy of what a BBEG is supposed to be is basically a one man army with also legions of minions at his disposal right? You get visions of characters like Sauron or the Lich King, even if you singled them out they would win the 1v1+the few guys you brought. But both of them have absurd magic and artifacts at their disposal. They're not really 'martials'.

A singled out martial BBEG would just get action economy'd to death and pelted with so many save or suck spells it would probably be embarrassing. That's why I was making the point he'd need a lot of support like the real world leaders you're thinking of. Or the use of a lot of magic artifacts. Or you'd need to make him a Hercules tier demigod with such ridiculous strength and resilience. Possibly some combination of these three.

Everybody feeding the trolls again, that are not comfortable with one horror/gore element, where they draw the X card.

Let us turn back how you made it work and what great campaigns you ran with it?

I watched the tales of blood and stone podcast and it was glorious. Sadly ended in the middle.

And I think a good adventure timeline would be:

>Dark Deeds in Last Hope > The Knife in Your Hand > Necessary Sacrifices > The Apple of Her > Saving Face > Call of the Necromancer > The Gorgon's Tears > The Man Who Fell to Urth > Heart of Winter > The Darkness in Shadowturrets > Cabaret of the Grotesque.

but what can be a good shadow to all of this?
>>
An important question to ask when determining if DLE games are for you is
'Do you enjoy campaigns that won't finish before you retire, and combats that run over several sessions (while your character is unconscious)?'
If so, stick with PF/DnD.
Otoh, if you like fast, dirty, deadly fights and campaigns that will be done by summer, then Demon Lord might work for you.

A campaign runs from level 0 to level 10.
There is no XP to track - the campaign structure is designed so that PCs level up after each adventure.
If you want to stretch it out you could vary this at your table, do two adventures per level, etc.
But I don't know why you would want to do that, there are so many character options, just do a new campaign with new PCs (or play something else).

Most of the modules are standalone, but there are some published campaign frames.
Of note, there is a official Freeport campaign, so if you have played Freeport before, you could play it again to get a before/after feel for how the Demon Lord engine affects play.
