>>97825348Don't think nuclear escalation is on the cards, even for 5th corporate war and subsequent collapse(s).
>>97825353Then business as usual continues. If Arasaka in NC proves anything a tactical going off in a city center won't even permanently ban you from a city.
>>97825493you'd think saburo openly going "kill all of night city and american pigs" and deliberately escalating wars would make them do something, but nope.i always thought that was strange too since they have stuff for to make sure someone stays permanently exiled but nobody who actually is under that comes up in my mind.>thats easy, saburo has money to bribe/adam smasherthat feels like a copout because not even being a corp gives you total immunity if you anger the cops and people enough
So what exactly would a evil book look like? What would be inside of it?Excluding the obvious crap like>Evil spells>How to summon demonsI am thinking about a ideology like what would a book of evil actually say? Like some form of ideology of evil. What would be its premises?
>>97809762go up, you baldhead
>>97797709I've had this thought in the back of my mind for ages that the core of "evil" is selfishness. You could disagree of course but I think putting yourself ahead of others too much is the root of tons of real-world ills as well as evils in fiction. If you look at Abrahamic faiths or other "right hand path" philosophy (if I'm using that term right) I'd say it mostly aligns with this principle. For bonus points, if you look at real-world Satanists (the meme atheist ones not the weirdo "we literally believe in the Morningstar" ones, IIRC) they ascribe to a philosophy that emphasizes personal growth and power while balancing it with doing no harm and having basic respect for people and other living things. (Don't quote me on this, I don't often look at beliefs like that.)

Recently I found some Humanity Fuck Yeah YouTube videos that use AI voice narration on my feed. After using them as background noise while cleaning my apartment I found that that most of them are more or less the same. Humans are the only ones who know how to fight/love sex/survive/etc. How can we save the genre or reinvent it so it isn't so stale?
>>97821658It's just a sci fi transposition of how people really hated elves for being written as super special mary sues in a lot of young adult fiction some time ago.
>>97825233star trek also has humans outfighting the warrior race and outespionaging the espionage race, as well as imprinting their inherent value upon the literally omnipotent and omniscient raceits actually peak hfy before people even thought up hfy, its probably cause roddenberry was such an idealist

>>97821609This.Some HFY is fun, but a lot of it is slop marketed to unimpressive Untermensch irl who just want to feel remarkable.Same kind of people who watch Andrew Tate video's, buy manosphere subscriptions, and watch "Libtard owned" youtube videos.>>97821658The reason why Avatar caused so much seethe is that all well known scifi has humans as either the good guys, or the cool guys. Star Trek, Star Wars, 40k, Gundam, Macross...Wheras in Avatar, humans are neither good, nor actually very cool dudes. They're evil, they're dicks, and they lose. Which was unfamiliar to audiences and generated decade-long seethe among people who were used to humans winning.>>97821566Personally I really enjoy the "Humans are Aliens" variant spin. Less about being OP, more just about being fucking weird. Different, in their own wayI wrote a bit of fiction a while back about how humans are weird, because unlike every other sensible creature that lives on planets, Humans live on floating cities in space, that are entirely open to vacuum, and get by on environmental suits and body mods.

>>97824770Nekomaru's gonna be really confused if Kisui makes a weird call, but he wants to make whatever Kisui wants work. He's fine with following orders, even if he thinks they're dumb, and he's not really gonna put up much of a fuss, but if the plan falls apart in some way he'll just go on autopilot. Nekomaru has a "fine, you're the boss" mentality in this situation, I guess. If for whatever reason Kisui puts the scroll in danger, or Kisui clearly can't make it through something Nekomaru could easily clear (like running over a small body of water or something), Nekomaru will step in just at the last moment, snatch it and clear the obstacle. Is he gonna get an earful from Kisui for it? Absolutely, but he's made peace with this, and Nekomaru will just give the scroll back when the team's back in a safe position.Given that I've offered to write that part myself, what WOULD Kisui plan?
>>97824322>plus if I'm gonna do it it'll take a bit to write some patch notesThose would be useful for returning characters and premade characters. But they would be difficult to make if you didn't keep track of the whole process.

Dice should either have marginal impact or there should be some serious luck mitigation mechanics. Most times when people cope that these mechanics exist, the mitigation mechanics are the marginal part, not the core dice luck aspect. On the other hand, fixed value combat is much harder to design, especially in a way that's not boring. I can name the number of good games with such combat on 2 fingers. They are Dune and Kemet.>>97825407In our defense, we are slobs.

One of the few characters I ever saw personally retire instead of getting killed in action. I remember he took Hellfire Warlock as a prc but I modified it slightly. 3.x didn't need a lot of homebrewing iirc. I'd have to break out my actual notes for more details. I remember writing down his character level progress, which he changed a bit as we played ofc. That campaign lasted seven years but he went from 1 to 17 in a little over 3 years. Great player and he's become an excellent DM. His pacing is superb. He gathered some great magic items in that game and didn't recovered an Orb of Dragon kind (Black). He is, to date, the only character to ever recover one of those. I should dig out those notes. I think you guys would appreciate them.

Alright, it's a slow monday and i'm bored as shit, so it's Changeling: the Lost time. What's your best True Fae you've ever made/seen in a campaign you've been in? Or at least memorable/fucked enough lol
>>97811111I don't know but look at those digits!
>>97803972>when you play Cyberpunk 2020 but it's secretly Changeling The Lost with the corporate war being a conflict between the Gentry>the Blackwall is the Hedge
How whimsical can CtL get? The theme of changelings being afraid of returning keepers grinds down a bit too much for me, and it's worked into so many aspects of the setting it makes me question if it's possible to get away from that. I just wanna be a fairy, man.
>>97820204The Keepers never have to show back up, man. You can have an entire story about Courtly intrigue, or mapping the local hedge, becoming local 'superheroes' that protect your neck of the woods from hobgoblins and such. >No one throws a fête like Pale Peony, the current Queen of Spring, but March the Mad Hare has designs on snagging the Antler Crown and becoming the Jackalope King. He wants the PCs to help embarrass her through a series of supposedly harmless faux pas to soften up her position so he can challenge her for the Crown at the next Spring Ball. He promises them cushy positions and titles of power once his decidedly more hedonistic court takes over. Do the PCs help? Do they curry favor with Pale Peony and rat out the rabbit? Or do they play both sides off each other and try to come out on top themselves?Changelings, I think, also make for prime crossover material if that's your thing. Vampires make a good dark mirror to to them. Both groups feed off humans, after a fashion, and are concerned with politicking and maintaining a stable territory. It's one of the reasons I made them the second main splat in my Lost Vegas setting.
>>97820204Extremely.Gentry are for the ST to use as he sees fit. Their plots can range from stuff like stealing every 3rd teacup in a village and taking a bite out of every pie to total galactic annihilation of everything that has and will ever exist. If you want whimsy, just do it. Goblins and huntsmen exist as low and mid tier oponents. Or focus on tge byzantine nature of the courts where everyone will stab everyone else in the back over who gets the first dance with the spring queen but will fight to the last together simultaniously if the gentry ever come. For whimsy i personaly wiuld focus on the well meaning but missguided plots of the bridge-burners. Their mission (for example, to prevent Gentry from noticing mortals and mortals stumbling into Hedgegates) can lead to a lot of low-stakes but high drama meltdowns like tryibg to stoo them from stopping the production of a theater play that portrays fae as positive or them trying to get the city to demolish an old villa on the edge of town where wild Hedgegates often form and many freshly escaped changelings exit on their flight from arcadia. You wouldn't stop tge city from replacing that dreamy old chateu with a beatiful parking lot, now would you?Or just fuck with normies in fun ways. Nothing reprehensile about taking down the local mafia with unseen means or replacing all of a meth dealers meth with candy.Or bully werewolves by throwing rocks from the moon at them. Or break into a vampires haven to draw penises on their faces during daysleep
What campaigns have you made and how long did it take to flesh it out?
>>97822521>What are you struggling with?I think it's mostly me wanting to improvise a lot of stuff since when I do prepare most of the stuff I write before hand ends up being really irrelevant.
>>97822550Ah, you're not alone in that, many people here and outside struggle with that. You may find good value in changing your approach to prep. Like you said, if you try to zoom in and prepare something specific you risk not using it or having to quantum ogre it. YMMV as different groups deal with hooks and agency in different ways, of course. What I find to be really effective in situations where you have to be ready to come up with stuff on the fly is having a more vague prep done, and work on the details when the time comes. You want to have them explore an area, write down just the main players, their agenda and personality. Add creatures, split them into factions. Give a basic framework of how they interact with each other, and maybe a few notable happenings that can come up if someone asks or does something. The PCs enter a valley, there's orcs there. You know that the orcs raid caravans, so that's a possible random encounter. The PCs want to look into it, you know that elves have been trying to trade, but their leader is ill tempered, so there's also a patrol of angry elves around, and maybe they blame the PCs if they loot the wrong thing or act in some aggressive way. Stuff like that. You can come up with stuff because you know what the premise is and how the world would react, but you didn't write down anything specific.
>>97822308I usually just start with a single dumb idea and then expand on it. Like for my current game, I wanted to do a fairy tale storybook adventure. So right away, I decided all the sentient beings are talking cartoon animal people. Then I was like, what if all terrain, plants, and animals were made of candy / desserts? The rest of it pretty much wrote itself from there
>>97822264No time. Prep is noob trap.
Been playing one shots lately, because of schedules conflicting and because I like trying new systems out to find the good ones to base a campaign around.I tried several methods. An Only War campaign that was mainly a series of combat encounters linked by a war movie plot that was just the ongoing conflict. One small starting operation against insurgents and then a longer conflict with Orks, that got sidelined after we couldn't manage to get together to play anymore. It's always there ready to continue if we want. Prep wasn't that deep, after I put together a few operation maps to give context during mission briefings. I probably spent more time cropping enemy stat profiles in a nice little sheet I could print out than getting sessions together.L5R was the next big thing. I put together the basic premise, named a bunch of NPCs and gave them personality, ambitions and all that stuff, most of them aren't even statted beyond "generic+1" . I put together a small conspiracy plot in case the PCs needed a nudge, but they soon went in another direction and I rolled with that. Prep work gave me all I needed, I just had to come up with the details. I had another subplot ready just in case, and it's turning out to be the main plot in the current second campaign arc that we just started.Between L5R arcs I GMd a cyberpunk 2020 campaign. It was supposed to be a sort of open table limited to our group but it soon became a regular campaign after a few players became unavailable. City map was done with google maps, a few factions with objectives and again a bunch of NPCs. We did keep the option to have the players change PCs between sessions, turned out pretty useful in some cases, like when the party had to interact with a zeppelin hijack from three different locations.Next thing I'm going to prep is Exalted, still have to think how to tackle that because I want to study the system first and boy, is there a lot to read. Then maybe a classic fantasy using GURPS.

>>97824423Dont worry about the actual dice before deciding how you want results to behave and people to act. Randomizers are just randomizers, so the form they take or the method doesnt matter until you have the vibe decided. For instance, if you want to encourage players taking risks, make a blackjack-style mechanic and add whatever randomizer you think will work best for you. If you want something which makes more average results, use something that creates a bell curve. Et ceteraAlso try to think about what mechanics you want to see, and what randomizers help you make that run smoothly. For example, a wargame im working on uses d12s because of how i wanted to do morale rolls (roll over [half the number of models the unit lost] plus [number of models lost this round] to avoid losing a model). I could use all sorts of dice or tweak the mechanic, but a d12 works well enough for it
>>97825022most dice nerds 1) don't play games and 2) don't have a nuanced viewpoint like you do. good job anon>>97824423i would argue that doing exotic dice resolution mechanics ( which is generally anything other than muh d20 and muh big british pile of d6s) adds complexity that you can put in a more interesting part of your game. Using a classic dice resolution mechanic also will increase your player base. This depends on what kind of game you are making too - boardgamers are more open to alternate dice than wargamers or roleplaying gamers. early in 13th age's release cycle someone asked Rob Heinz at a convention or AmA or something ' did you ever consider using something other than d20?' and his response was ' why?' and it was a correct response - he did several innovative things with the d20 that some cutting edge game like tom abbadon's icon use. i think two dice + x is bad for RPGs and good for wargames. warmahordes used 2d6+x and you could boost a roll to 3d6+x for a mana. RPGs thrive on randomness. >>97825061right wingers did not start getting called chuds until we found out what was going on in the brooklyn tunnels many years before we found out how real that meme is.
