>Setting Basically late medieval to early Renaissance Europe >Magic Not really available to players, expect in the form of extremely rare high level magical weapons and items. BBEG should possess magic abilities >Player characters European presenting male fighters only, maximum one low level hedge wizard or shaman>Races All NPCs and PC should be human, finding a non-human village like elves should be extremely rare, unlikely, and magical experience
>>97223078You must be a faglord.
>>97222512Close but no cigar. >basically renaissance to wars of religion and early colonialism mashed together as needed to maximize cool stuff in game >Magic available at cost with clear mechanical risk & reward combined with social mechanics over time>Classless, everyone can learn spells if they have the stats, everyone can fight if they have the stats. Backgrounds are important context for skills but remain inspiration rather than dictation. >Races starting as predominantly human, adding in other races as they are encountered and become allies in a living world that engage with player decisions and blends in the odd in gradual ways to create both a sense of grounded world familiarity and wonder as exploration proceeds

Why did 5.5e drop the ball so hard? Everyone I know who likes 5e is staying with 5.0e. And more than a few of them have moved to 3.5, OSR, or other games entirely. Is WOTC just stupid?
>>97222292>ESLismOH, sorry, I forget you're a fucking retard. My bad. I guess my posts are for the non-retards in the thread.>According to Paizo themselves, Pathfinder has always been irrelevant and has never actually been capable of competing with D&D.No one is going to provide a source for this; if someone does it will be proved to have been stretched mightily. Obviously Pathfinder is smaller than D&D; that's not relevant. My point is, if D&D 3.5 was a failure at the END of its lifecycle, it would be braindead to base most of your company around getting scraps of a non-existent playerbase. Which means that 3.5, even at the end of its life, was still understood in the industry to be a big opportunity with WotC making 4e. >By the way, PF2e sells many times better than 1st edition ever did. This is an exaggeration and the original source avoided giving a number (if something is "many times more" then it is at least thrice as many, because only doubling something is merely one times more).https://www.reddit.com/r/Pathfinder2e/comments/xsgynk/its_impossible_to_say_how_important_this/Comment too long. >>972181983.5 was subsidized by MtG, 4e had to compete with on it's own terms and 5e was downgraded when WotC learned you can't outsell cardboard crack, leading to a much diminished publication pipeline.
>>97221132>There is no "5.5e"This is something only 5.5 supremacists say. "Oh man, there isn't even a 5.0 any more, buh buh wotch PATCHED it your game doesn't even exist!" No thanks. The revised books are 5.5. They are a new edition, and if used, they replace older things. If you use them, you are playing 5.5. If you draw the line before them, you're playing 5.0.>there are just constant erratas and updates to 5e.Not even WotC is stupid enough to claim that their edition is 'errata'. They have huge pages of differences between them, things they renamed, functionality changed, conditions reworked.>You can play One D&D with anything made for 5e seamlessly. One D&D- always a maximally retarded name- doesn't exist. It was the codename for the playtest of 5.5. And it isn't compatible, and way more tables are still running 5.0 than anyone was predicting before 5.5 came out. It hasn't done anything close to the level of replacement that 3.5 did for 3.0.
>>97222257What you're overlooking is that success for Paizo and success for WotC are two different things. Paizo did not have the same overhead as WotC, so what WotC considered failing is not what Paizo would.
>>97204605>business is selling rulebooks and sourcebooks>royally fuck it up and kill your game for a quick buckseems stupid to me anon
I feel like this edition has alot of objectively bad things about it and is absolutely where the alot of worst qualities of current editions showed up. But I feel like I prefer playing this edition compared to a lot of previous editions and 10th edition. Its a weird transitional period where there's still a lot of the old units that haven't been legended yet while still having the fucking Primaris lot. Its strange but I don't feel like I'm missing out on much staying on this edition and playing with friends casually instead of going back to playing the current edition.

>>97222588I don't know why they bothered with errata for the Flamer/Man-catcher. It's the single worst weapon in the game and nothing they did changed it.Also, I guess if a Squat has a circular stone saw as their weapon besides their gun, they make unarmed attacks + circular stone saw. So cheap power pack weapons are overpriced on anyone with more than one attack, and the expensive ones are overpriced period.

Magic should be rare, mysterious, superstitious. It should take time to use and be exhausting to cast When did fantasy magic and wizards turn in Avatar the Last Airbender shooting fire and lightning out their assholes?
>>97218076How about magic from belief? You have a priest who REALLY REALLY BELIEVES that he can banish a spirit, he matches his willpower against it (his belief) and if he wins, the spirit is banished. Alternively, the belief could be a resource, ie a priest, wizard of godling has to convince a big enough group of people that their magic works, allowing it to happen. It could be cast using personal methods or a set formulae, but without the belief that it will work, it doesnt. It would lead to some interesting situations - a unbelieving scientist attempting a spell in a spellbook and nothing happens becasue he has no belief. A powerful wizard, priest or god could be reliant on the belief the people have in them - if the legend of the caster fades over time, their power fades or vanishes as well. It would give priest characters something to do than just heal, they would have to keep trying to generate belief in their particular god or brand of magic, while reducing the power of competing beliefs and religions. Building/destroying shrines and temples would aid one side or another, while a wandering wizard would encourage tales of mystery and wonder that spread from his adventures.
>>97221495>he matches his willpower against it (his belief) and if he wins, the spirit is banished. That is a formula that one of its parts is belief. The formula doesn't need to be compromised by hard math to be a formula. A newts eye, the tear of a virgin, and the a true loves kiss combined breaking a curse, or casting Charm Person is still a formula even if two of the parts are not really tangible.
>>97217677Doesn't work well for tabletop RPGs, or rather requires tremendous effort on GMs side of things.Because for magic to actually deliver on the "mysterious" side of things it should be exceedingly weird and confusing. You, as a GM, would have to construct an exceedingly complex system of metaphysics and obfuscate it from the players. For there to be genuine mystery, there has to be substance, glimpses of larger workings, a feeling that there is some semblance to alien law/reason that still would completely elude the players minds. You as a DM basically have to make some odd Cultist Simulator magic system and keep it 90% hidden from the players, good fucking luck.So no, just making magic rare doesn't fucking cut it.
>>97217677If magic exists, and it's a natural phenomena, it should be common, spellcasting should be rare because it will be restricted by those in power having access to the knowledge. Spellcasting should take more time based on complexity and power of the formulae, any physical activity consumes energy based on intensity but training should mitigate the effects for a time. Ignoring your limits should be dangerous and magical, the corruption of self be it physically, mentally or spiritually. Now you have crazy magicians, deformed magicians or weir magicians caused by power hungry, not so clever or people skilled on hindsight.
If you want magic as a combat resource then fireballs etc are going to lose any sense of mystery pretty quickly. If you make casting times a lot longer then you can have magic as a background feature where the scenario is to stop or enable a ritual that opens a portal, summons or bnishes a demon... similar to Call of Cthulhu. If you drop the hermetic casting approach and have magic being gifted by infernal powers you also get a lot more flavour.
