I got thinking recently, and I feel like a big problem with games where the main appeal is the vibe/feel of the setting rather than unique mechanics/crunch isn't the idea of an artistically driven game in and of itself. The problem, IMO at least, is more that A: a lot these games aren't just narrative-before-mechanics, the mechanics are a complete afterthought, and B: they're all aping the exact same vibe. If we only had 1 or 2 games attempting to capture the "grimdark" vibe it wouldn't be so bad but it feels like everything is going for variations of the exact same aesthetic/narrative flavour. At least Turnip28 had some degree of whimsy in the actual fluff, but with Trench Crusade, Mork Borg and a billion other "the artstyle is Streaking Grime" settings I personally am feeling grimdark fatigue.I dunno- I feel like an art/vibe driven game with an actually unique or at least underutilized vibe (purely as an example, aping the bright and colourful look of 2nd edition 40K and its contemporaries) and decent mechanics would be good.
>>97219773I agree, art direction is everything, no one wants to play with a world that is visualized to look dull and ugly
Everyone's trying to do grimdark because it's popular. The market exists and wants it, so everyone's jostling for first place. You can make a game with any other look but it's untested grounds.
>>97219773>they're all aping the exact same vibeThat's because you're looking at things that are all descended from the same source because it's far and away the most popular game in that niche.
>>97220097>I intend toYou can literally start right now!
>>97219773Grimslop is fine when there's an actual setting behind the art like with Mutant Chronicles but all the nu grimdark settings just reference Warhammer and call it a day. Grimdark isn't even a real genre it's a marketing buzzword.
Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! >>97223007Fuck off, none of the units that have heavy need a durability boost
>>97222943I've also played at least once a week since release, and in my experience the army that sits in a corner cowering and doing nothing but shooting generally wins. For context, we use player placed terrain (rulebook rules + allotment, so 6 impassables that we also treat as heavy, 4 6x6 medium area terrains and 2 10x10 medium area terrains)Most games end with both players at max primaries but the shooting castle scores Last Man Standing and First Strike which means they win.
I think the shoulders on tbe new termies and drwad would look cool with grave digger style art
>>97223158That sounds so much difference from my experience. How is the castling player clearing objectives and keep units on them without moving out of their corner? How do they deal with multiple units in Rhinos rushing in and charging them turn 1 or 2?Every time I've seen somebody try to do the sit in a corner and only shoot they struggle to get LOS to units in time, can't force enemy units off objectives and get their own scoring units on it in the same turn, and have one or two elite melee units that come flying into their ranks which start rolling up all the shooting units.
>>97223217What missions are you playing? The only core book mission where an objective outside of the deployment zone matters is the one with 3 points on the middle, and that is just a matter of getting guns looking at it and then both players trade putting on units each turn.Elite melee units don't make it to the shooting player because they get shot before they make it there (or their transport gets shot and they never make it there).I haven't seen rhino rush used for anything other than getting on objectives. Usually terrain makes it extremely difficult for a turn 1 charge from them, too? I've never bothered putting a melee unit in a rhino to try it. Search and Destroy is the only deployment type where it even seems feasible, if there was no terrain in the center. In Dawn of War/Hammer and Anvil deployment, deploying a rhino on the line, moving up 12 and then pivoting to put the butthole on the line, then evacuating 7" further up only gets you 19". If they're deployed on their line, for whatever reason they would do that, with their important stuff and not like a screen, and don't use the opportunity to react move away from your charging threat, that's still a 5" charge to make and you don't get a set-up move. Sounds like giving them free volley fire/overwatch and a chance of stunning yourself?

>>97220239>>97220243To be honest, in the DW campaign I'm in, I would have totally thought that was cool. I get people saying "bah! 10 corruption points is so punishing!" but the limit is 100 and even in a long deathwatch campaign, it will take forever for it to matter. I slightly agree with WP success punishing you for having high WP but I think it would give away the hallucination to easily for what it is.
>>97223001>but the limit is 100 and even in a long deathwatch campaign, it will take forever for it to matterThat's a good point actually, Maybe I just don't give them out often enough, but even in the longest 40k campaigns I've ever run or played not a single character ever acculumated enough insanity or corruption points for them to actually become an issue

can I get some tips on making this homebrew item?Passive Shield - WornHP: 40 BT: 5 AC TARGET: +6 Hardness: 6A shield that is fitted directly on clothing/armor, requiring the user to strategically turn their body to take blows with the shield. Instead of requiring a raise shield action and a shield block reaction, this shield will automatically block incoming damage depending on the incoming attack roll. As long as the attack roll of the incoming damage is equal or under the sum of AC + AC TARGET, but above or equal your AC, the shield will block the damage, as if you had performed the shield block reaction. You can not use Raise a Shield with this item, and it does not give AC bonuses. It's for a PF2E total conversion into a mecha action homebrew system where the player has to fill one of their weapon slots with it, so don't worry about how it fits on a medieval setting.

In your game, do you treat bows as strength- or dexterity-based weapons?
For every 2 points of Dex above 10, add 1 to your roll to hit. For every 3 points of Dex above 10, make an additional attack per attack action at a cumulative -2 penalty. For every 4 points of Dex above 10, increase the crit range of the weapon by 1.For every 2 points of Str above 10, increase the damage of the weapon by 1. For every 3 points of Str above 10, you can reroll 1 damage die per attack. For every 4 points of Str above 10, your melee attacks may cleave to another target within range and your ranged attacks gain 50% of their base range in additional range.

I feel like this edition has alot of objectively bad things about it and is absolutely where the alot of worst qualities of current editions showed up. But I feel like I prefer playing this edition compared to a lot of previous editions and 10th edition. Its a weird transitional period where there's still a lot of the old units that haven't been legended yet while still having the fucking Primaris lot. Its strange but I don't feel like I'm missing out on much staying on this edition and playing with friends casually instead of going back to playing the current edition.

>>97222588I don't know why they bothered with errata for the Flamer/Man-catcher. Magic should be rare, mysterious, superstitious. It should take time to use and be exhausting to cast When did fantasy magic and wizards turn in Avatar the Last Airbender shooting fire and lightning out their assholes?
>>97218076How about magic from belief? You have a priest who REALLY REALLY BELIEVES that he can banish a spirit, he matches his willpower against it (his belief) and if he wins, the spirit is banished. Alternively, the belief could be a resource, ie a priest, wizard of godling has to convince a big enough group of people that their magic works, allowing it to happen. It could be cast using personal methods or a set formulae, but without the belief that it will work, it doesnt. It would lead to some interesting situations - a unbelieving scientist attempting a spell in a spellbook and nothing happens becasue he has no belief. A powerful wizard, priest or god could be reliant on the belief the people have in them - if the legend of the caster fades over time, their power fades or vanishes as well. It would give priest characters something to do than just heal, they would have to keep trying to generate belief in their particular god or brand of magic, while reducing the power of competing beliefs and religions. Building/destroying shrines and temples would aid one side or another, while a wandering wizard would encourage tales of mystery and wonder that spread from his adventures.
>>97221495>he matches his willpower against it (his belief) and if he wins, the spirit is banished. That is a formula that one of its parts is belief. The formula doesn't need to be compromised by hard math to be a formula. A newts eye, the tear of a virgin, and the a true loves kiss combined breaking a curse, or casting Charm Person is still a formula even if two of the parts are not really tangible.
>>97217677Doesn't work well for tabletop RPGs, or rather requires tremendous effort on GMs side of things.Because for magic to actually deliver on the "mysterious" side of things it should be exceedingly weird and confusing. You, as a GM, would have to construct an exceedingly complex system of metaphysics and obfuscate it from the players. For there to be genuine mystery, there has to be substance, glimpses of larger workings, a feeling that there is some semblance to alien law/reason that still would completely elude the players minds. You as a DM basically have to make some odd Cultist Simulator magic system and keep it 90% hidden from the players, good fucking luck.So no, just making magic rare doesn't fucking cut it.
>>97217677If magic exists, and it's a natural phenomena, it should be common, spellcasting should be rare because it will be restricted by those in power having access to the knowledge. Spellcasting should take more time based on complexity and power of the formulae, any physical activity consumes energy based on intensity but training should mitigate the effects for a time. Ignoring your limits should be dangerous and magical, the corruption of self be it physically, mentally or spiritually. Now you have crazy magicians, deformed magicians or weir magicians caused by power hungry, not so clever or people skilled on hindsight.
If you want magic as a combat resource then fireballs etc are going to lose any sense of mystery pretty quickly. If you make casting times a lot longer then you can have magic as a background feature where the scenario is to stop or enable a ritual that opens a portal, summons or bnishes a demon... similar to Call of Cthulhu. If you drop the hermetic casting approach and have magic being gifted by infernal powers you also get a lot more flavour.
