Do you prefer systems with a strict class-based martial/caster division or classless systems that allow anyone to dip into anything at the cost of never being great at it?

The classics were miserable then and are miserable now. It doesn't accurately reflect 90% of the fantasy genre or create a good gaming experience.
People enjoyed it back then similar to how people 15000 years ago felt warm in their shallow cave at night - it's better than not having any option. Compared to a warm modern house, or a correctly designed game, that experience was always terrible, people just gaslighted themselves.
>>
>>97253976
Concession accepted. Maybe play with adults next time, who sit down with the purpose of having fun as a group and creating interesting gameplay and stories, so they don't intentionally try to ruin the game they want to have fun instead.
>"B-But-"
No, faggot. You just give the asshole one warning, and you kick him if he doesn't conform to the experience everyone else is trying to have.

Sharing useful wisdom that has helped me run more satisfying games. Trying to share some less common advice. These are my opinions and techniques that have helped me. I’d love to hear what has worked for other /tg/ DMs.

1. Time pressure- adding time pressure through use of "clocks" including real life clocks is incredibly helpful to add pressure and tension to a scenario. Giving players choices but not enough time to make every choice adds meaning to those choices. Time pressure in combat is a contentious, but powerful tool to discuss with your players. Forcing a decision in seconds makes combat stressful and - when players are on board- fun (in anticipation of the common objection: if the players don’t make a choice in combat, I usually come back to them before round end, I never have them “just stand there”. Remember to assume character competency).

2- The GM-ing engine- It's okay to front load content and prepare a few different rail-roady hooks in the first few sessions. Being a GM is like starting one of those old prop engines with a winch. It takes a while for the pistons (players) to kick into gear. Once they do, after a few sessions, all you need to do is apply gas. Solve the tavern problem by figuring out how characters know each other prior to the first session.

3- Immersion means impact- After a session, reflect on how the player choices affected the world (for good or ill), try to let the ripple of that effect emerge in the next session. Players that feel like they change the world around them invest in it.

>Time pressure- adding time pressure through use of "clocks" including real life clocks is incredibly helpful to add pressure and tension to a scenario.
I disagree entirely. I've had two separate campaigns ruined because the players decided a several-month long timer was too brief for them to do something and, despite being grossly underleveled for it, insisted on approaching the encounter. I pushed them off, redirected them to a side-task but they kept at it, almost every session.
>>
>>97280690
This is a fair criticism. What about letting the players fail?

If I may: the technique is very useful to add tension/pressure. Your anxiety-ridden players do not need any additional tension/pressure.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Dragonbane isn't an OSR game, it's an RQ clone. Post about it there.

>>97279989
IMO the ideal for treasure maps isn't a dungeon but a simpler lair located somewhere in the wilderness. That said, if you don't mind weird technofantasy you could try Lone Colossus of the Akolouthos Sink by Gus L., I seem to recall that being in that range.

Could be something worth using there. I'll take a look.
>>97280209
I think I have Halls of the Blood King floating around somewhere. Worth considering. Thanks.
>>97280830
Yeah my initial idea was to generate a small lair and give some landmark designators to point them in the right direction when they search for it. (5 miles East of Obelisk, just beyond the lake. Place Obelisk and lake hexes accordingly on hexmap etc.) but I also thought this may be a good way to break up the process of delving such a huge dungeon as Stonehell.
I was considering using The Hyqueous Vaults as it's been recommended by Prince and others. I could also have one of the macguffin rods from the module be bundled up in the map as my player hasn't actually examine it yet (fortunately for me). It's maybe a bit longer than I was looking for, at about 60 rooms, but it's only one floor and has "vault" in the title, so the allure of treasure would be strong.

>Reposting the magic item I came up with the other day as I think the sloppa image I generated for it turned out decent.
>>
>>97280181
There is a supplement called Dungeon Grappling, you could maybe look into that.
Although though it purports to be compatible with S&W, it seems to me that it's mainly written with modern editions in mind, but could be what you're looking for.
>>
>>97280181
TL;DR: No. The DMG has unarmed combat rules that are way more extensive than they ought to be, but they're not as detailed as what you seem to want.

Anyone play it yet? I like the "rustic fantasy" setting. The core rules seem interesting, it has more mechanics and gameplay than most other narrative games. I enjoy that it doesn't have moves or whatever to confine you, you can actually play your character and do whatever you want. It's got enough knobs and options in terms of resolution I feel like it's actually a real game despite having that more story focus vs simulation focus. And I like that the DM has all the traditional power of the DM and there's not like "Fate Points" or something else that gives players control to change stuff.
Thinking I might try a short game for my table, just a few lower powered sessions. It also has good tools for a solo stuff which is interesting.

This is a tactile hobby, ai has no place here, especially in a subsection of the hobby devoted to appreciating the pre-digital era of it. You seem the sort of person who would let a far more destructive element into your hobby simply to spite someone you might disagree with. This is not a case of take the good with the bad, it's a case or rejecting an utterly incompatible element & mindset that will dilute pollute and diminish the hobby we love if it is not checked immediately and vigorously.

How do you respond when your players choose to side with a character who is quite obviously, unapologetically evil and meant to be a villain? Typically, unless they leave behind evidence of their crimes, I'll usually let them follow the quest line along until they get killed or arrested somehow.
