Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:>n00b DM's Guidehttps://pastebin.com/EVvt6P0B>n00b Player's Handbookhttps://pastebin.com/XALkXkV0>Troves, Resources, Blogs, etc:http://pastebin.com/9fzM6128>Need a starter dungeon? >>97353733Lovely stuff.
>>97354566>mental weaknessNTA, but calling it weakness is entirely accurate. A man who can't pick up his infant son is just objectively physically weak (ie. less strong than expected for his species). A man who can't get arsed to get out of bed and provide for himself and his family is mentally weak (ie. less motivated or disciplined than expected for his species). And I'm saying this as someone who still "deals with depression" or whatever we're gonna call being a weak cunt.Acknowledging your weaknesses as weaknesses and flaws is a necessary step in overcoming them. People achieving things despite their weaknesses does not mean that they didn't have those weaknesses or that those things weren't weak, just that they overcame them or compensated.A deaf nigga that paints a nice painting is still deaf (ie. having extremely weak hearing). The cure for weakness is strength.
Depression is just not enjoying life, it's that simple. This anon is retarded >>97354667
>>97354937>t. guy who has the strength to do enjoyable stuff
>>97354667This is to buy into the idea though that mental illness is not illness. Both depression and MS are ultimately physiological, even if the symptoms they exhibit are different. I don’t think most of us look at someone with an ‘obvious’ ‘physical’ illness and see it as a character flaw. To draw an artificial category distinction, both ‘physical’ and ‘mental’ illnesses can be helped through pharmacological intervention and non-medicinal coping strategies and behavioural changes. For both categories, the latter are often more difficult than the former for obvious reasons: a pill doesn't have to fight habits and behaviours often long ingrained by coping with a particular illness. The body shepherds its energies for survival and is loathe to expend them ‘unnecessarily’. It’s one of the cruellest paradoxes of any long term illness. Most people with depression do get out of bed to provide for themselves and their families, not least because they have no other choice. I know you aren’t that anonymous, but you both seem to think that people with depression have no self-awareness and would kill to be able to just ‘stop that fag shit’. I don’t want special treatment or accommodations - I want to be normal, productive, functioning and socially contributory, and it would be nice if those efforts came to feel normal, easy and healthy.

>>97354731Canonically Jabba has a presence there because Gardulla (the female Hutt you can see behind Jabba in TPM) created the Boonta Eve on Tatooine using Damask's money in order to slowly try and gain power from under Jabba's influence, but he took over it which is why we see him presenting in TPM. Presumably the Boonta Eve is more popular than the Malastare championshipsIt's all in the Plagueis bookAs for the hyperspace thing, it's in a spur of the Triellus Trade Route which is the biggest trading route in the Outer Rim, but the main popular part does not go through Tatooine
>>97354764> Canonically Jabba has a presence there because Gardulla (the female Hutt you can see behind Jabba in TPM) created the Boonta Eve on Tatooine using Damask's money in order to slowly try and gain power from under Jabba's influence,Well that, and I thought I remember reading somewhere that Jabba also wasn’t exactly “welcome” in polite Hutt society… I think he had a reputation for being more lecherous and deviant than was considered socially acceptable within Hutt society.

5 person Level 5 party.
>>97354589PArt of what ruined it is the idea of a "balanced encounter"Back in the day, the encounter is just what existed there. Whether or not you could fight it was a choice you had to make.
>>97353633Challenge rating is completely meaningless.
>>97354710>>97354718Yeah I should have been clear in OP, I was asking how people would feel about it more as in 'would you have fun with this combat'? than asking if it's balanced
>>97354964>would you have fun with this combatit's 5eno
>>97354964>Modern DnD>"Would you have fun?"No, combat in modern DnD is an unfun tedious slog with zero tension or meaningful tactical choice (unless you're a caster). I'd go as far as to say combat is the worst part of the game because the roleplaying stops for an hour to get through a solved mini-game that other systems can do in a fourth of the time.
What can you do to make bandit encounters more immersive and interesting than the old ambush-fight shtick?
>>97352869>Throats cut, boxes broken open, and a hasty trail leading off in the forest nearby. You listen closely to hear laughter and lots of noise which means lots of men.You know, turning to banditry does not automatically require one to have an IQ below room temperature. The rest of these read like you asked chat GPT for a response.
>>97349486Make the bandits real bastards. Like not the fantasy type of baby-eating bastard but like the real world type of thug bastard that is all too familiar to modern day people.Fighting them will feel very satisfying.
Instead of money, the bandits demands some useless mundane item from the group. Depending how interested your group is for the reason behind it you spin the story further>the bandits demand every scissors you have on hand>turns out they actually used to be normal farmers but are now enslaved by a hag>the hag uses all those scissors to create a scissor-golem>she sends it out to terrorize the coutryside
>Bandits are 12-15 years old, their armor doesn't fit and they clearly don't know how to hold their weapons properly>Bandits perform a hit-and-run kidnapping on the party cleric/healer to tend to an injured one of their number at their hideout>One of the bandits looks suspiciously like a noble's missing son>Bandits are guarding a bridge. You can either best one in single combat or make one laugh to cross
Loli banditsLet your players show their power level.

>>97353961I'll be honest, I think that making Exaltation into some vaguely-defined "numinous" miracle just sounds like pretentious faff to me.
>>97354869NTA but using that word alone makes you the pretentious one. Besides, it's lore that was clearly thought out and vibes with the idea of making the setting more spiritual and magical as opposed to white wolf's cynicism and ham fisted deconstruction.
>>97354897NTA, but it was the devs who started the numinous trend, the most egregious case being "for a numinous reason, city fathers take after their cities".
>>97354908I get that, but it's obviously being used sarcastically to deride what seems like an honest effort to amusingly actually make the setting more numinous as per its real definition. Braindead posting
>>97354931"Show, don't tell", saying something is numinous, doesn't make it so; the devs just wrote a bunch of empty mystery boxes.

I had no idea there was so much hate towards the Verbena. I was just thinking of a character concept based on the vvitch movie from 2015 about witches who try to initiate people into their culture by first destroying all attachments they may have. But why is such a tradition so reviled? I don't see them that much different from the hermetics or the cult of ecstasy.
