>What is Exalted?
An epic high-flying role-playing game about reborn god-heroes in a world that turned on them.
Start here:http://theonyxpath.com/category/worlds/exalted/

>That sounds cool, how can I get into it?
Read the 3e core book (link below). For mechanics of the old edition, play this tutorial:http://mengtzu.github.io/exalted/sakuya.html
It’ll get you familiar with most of the mechanics.

>Gosh that was fun. How do I find a group?
Roll20 and the Game Finder General here on /tg/. good luck

Actually, where does it even say that demons and such weren't also bound to not cause trouble? Pg. 101 of 2E's Compass: Yu-shan just says that "one of each kind of animal, plant, and being" was brought to the paths to swear on behalf of its kind to not engage in violence in the paths, with Solars and only Solars being mentioned as an exception to this. Are the baths discussed further somewhere else?
>>
>>97870157
>paths
Well fuck. Baths, rather.
>>
>>97870157
>Are the baths discussed further somewhere else?
No, but gathering one of each kind of first circle demon isn't viable, let alone gathering every second or third circle demon. Even if they just need a second circle demon of each Third Circle Demon, or even one from each Yozi, it's still very unlikely. Gathering the kinds of undead they'd need for protection from the underworld isn't possible because the baths were made centuries ago and the Deathlords are active - they can have a ghost and a spectre but if you're going to tell me that Venus went down into the Labyrinth and started picking up hekatonkhire I'm going to tell you Venus is has been replaced by a Deathlord. Put simply, she gathered one of each kind of being she was able to. There is a big difference between that and one of each kind of being. She doesn't have the means.

As an example, how would she have grabbed a Getimian before they were even made, when we roll the baths through into 3e?
>>
>>97870605
>Put simply, she gathered one of each kind of being she was able to. There is a big difference
Well, the kinds of beings she could gather are also the kinds of beings that might feasibly get into the baths, so...if undead and raksha and such weren't included - which they may have, not sure I agree with how difficult it would've been to gather one example of each for someone with Venus' resources - it's hardly a huge problem.

>As an example, how would she have grabbed a Getimian before they were even made, when we roll the baths through into 3e?
Mixing lore from two different editions like that seems kind of pointless to me, to be honest. Sorry if I've just missed it, but I don't remember those baths being mentioned in Yu-Shan's description in Charting Fate's Course.
>>
>>97870639
>Mixing lore from two different editions like that seems kind of pointless to me, to be honest.
There are no mechanics involved, so switching between editions doesn't seem like the kind of thing that should be a problem? I could point at any number of sorcerous outputs if you like. Literally any novel creation of sorcery, artifice, or bio-engineering, and there's a strong case to be made that almost any output of Imbue Amalgam (as one example) would be a novel creation and thus mistletoe to the baths.

I was around 11 years ago for the launch of 5e and the sentiment was extremely positive. It was praised for how much control it game DMs over the game. It was seen as a fantastic recovery from 4e moving away from mechanical crunch to focus on the roleplaying. 11 years later and you see the exact opposite sentiment. If you go sleuthing for discussions when it released you will see what I mean, it was positively received and people were singing its strengths. Now when you go look at 5e discussion you find people burning its strengths at the stake like a witch. People complaining about how hard it is on DMs, lacking in concise rulings for things, a lack of crunch they crave. I'm curious why the pendulum swung the other way. The few reasons I come up with are as follows.
-the RPG space has welcomed a lot more people into the hobby and the newcomers dislike it
-people playing the game for a decade have come around to it and settled on things they dislike
-the game isn't appreciated for what it's always been good at and people are playing it differently than how it was meant to be played
-the people who have always disliked it are more vocal now and are gaining influence in the RPG space
There's a lot of angles to discuss this and come around to understanding it. I'm curious what is the most likely answer to the changing sentiment. My best guess is that since 5e had come out, a lot of other systems have launched, a rising tide raises all boats so to speak, and a lot of newcomers have tried out other systems and now consider some other system their defacto best system, and have since begun to compare 5th edition unfavorably to what they prefer best.

On my side, I should have written here
>rather play 4e than 5e
Welcome to the retard club anon, I guess
>>
>>97869231
>However, even if it did outsell other RPGs at the time it would have been clear to WotC that it was not popular among their most dedicated and vocal consumer base
This is such a cope. Wotc wouldn't have have given a rats' ass if they found more buyers of a different demographic.
The truth is that the cope numbers are for the very early period, the head of D&D was fired every December or so, those retarded videos were a PR disaster, and PF1e did great until they decided that their business models was shovelware instead of a "distillation" of 3e plus adventure paths.
>>
>>97869725
I think you are both right... in a way. PF2e feels less padded and "solves" certain gaming situations differently. PF2e combat math also works from day 1 - they managed to have a threadmill that worked instead of what happened with 4e monsters. They way they link critis to level is quite interesting. PF2e has also a rarity system that should be stolen even by OSR players - but applied differently of course.

However, both games have a "videogamey" feel in their approach to HP, or with 4e minions that break immersion in the same way thugs of a super high level are added to be a threat in an high level PF2e adventure.

3e/PF1e has a special freedom in design space that needs a bit to be properly organized but each choice feels real in-universe in a way games that came after cannot do.
>>
>>97870276
Video games are when you're allowed to use any monster in the manual? Isn't that more freedom, not less?
>>
>>97870365

I've noticed that significant percentages communities that form around pieces of tabletop media (wargames/TTRPGs) that aren't the most popular "faces" of their respective mediums tend to develop a bad hybridization of a hipster/superiority complex.

>examples:
Just about every wargaming community that is around what aren't the Warhammers.
Nearly most TTRPGs that aren't DnD or Pathfinder.

What really causes this sort of thing to happen so much among autists?
What are the current biggest offending communities of this sort of thing?

You still haven't done much to even describe the behaviour, never mind that it's common.
>>
>>97870185
>anyone disagreeing with me just proves I'm right
Not everyone.
Just some.
I haven't described much because I tried to be as neutral as possible.
But through doing that I ended up as someone said being vague.
I think >>97859903 said it best in the spoiler post. >>97859975 too is on to something with the mention of music scenes.

It was never my intent to come across as rude and condescending as the people I accuse of being condescending. I should have written in the OP that Warhammer players also have the same problems but for different reasons like being a part of the most popular thing therefore feeling correct.
>>
>>97870099
As the other guy said, youre just making up people and relegating all criticisms against your super narrow world view as "bad faith" or whatever other stupid buzzword you can pick to discredit the opposition. Your choice is clearly calling everyone who disagrees a "hipster."

Now I will concede and agree that anyone who hates on The Popular Thing Because Its Popular is an obnoxious faggot, but these people are few and far between and at best a silent minority you are blowing out of proportion.
>>
>>97870504
>youre just making up people and relegating all criticisms against your super narrow world view as "bad faith" or whatever other stupid buzzword you can pick to discredit the opposition
I know some might just be trolls. But I get what you're saying.
Part of it is my fault in not saying that Warhammer fans don't have a superiority complex. I should have covered that in the OP.
I might cover it next time I bring this up at a later date if I decide to. That's a big if.

>Now I will concede and agree that anyone who hates on The Popular Thing Because Its Popular is an obnoxious faggot
>but these people are few and far between and at best a silent minority you are blowing out of proportion.
I think I am now that you mention it.
Usually the vocal minority of any collective of people tend to be loud to seem like the majority.

In your opinion, what causes some autists to develop the complexes I have talked about whether it is for a popular thing or unpopular thing?
>>
>Gen Xer douchebag beard
This is a painfully 2000s image.

Since I can't find a Lancer thread at the moment, I'll start one I guess.

I've recently gotten very into mecha, but the exact flavor I'm looking for seems to be somewhat limited. I'm looking for a good system to play with some friends, and so far, Lancer and Beam Saber see to be the only two that standout to me. Lancer seems pretty cut-and-dry simple to get into without being too crunchy, but I've heard it lacks on the roleplaying aspect, which confuses me, and is typically my favorite part of TTRPGs.

I suppose I'd just like to know the following:
- How does Lancer's system negatively impact the RP portion of the game? Isn't that more or less completely affected by the players themselves and/or myself as the GM?
- For those with experience with both systems, would you recommend Lancer or Beam Saber? Or are there any other mech-based systems you'd recommend?

For context, my players and I have mainly only played 5e (I've been a forever DM for about 5 years). I personally love complex mechanics, but my players not so much.

I thought the flamer teams would fit because of the devotion and faith aspects otherwise. But check Hernkyn, Scouts, and Kommandos for options to play them as if you're looking for sneaky options.
>>
>>97865296

Yea they feel kinda fitting too. More close combatoriented, sneaky, weak armour and basesize fits as well. Thx
>>
Is there a cheap and easy way to get Genestealer Familiars? I would need two for the Kommando conversion. Also an idea how to make a sniper.
>>
>>97845724
I'm certain I don't play it correctly in my group. We've been using Compendium teams up until recently, now that everyone in the group has recent kill teams. But we don't do crit ops, still do missions from the older editions and agree on any sort of cover issue with 'Can you see it'. This would easily pass as no cover in our group.

>Thoughts on Maria?
It's a great game and different enough from Friedrich that you could own both.

Like Friedrich, the card based combat is superb - you have to balance going to battle early vs not (allowing your fellow players to gain cards and get stronger), you have to make sure you put yourself in good positions to use said cards and put your opponent in positions that aren't. You need to know which battles you can lose to bleed cards from the other general so they end up weaker and more prone to follow up attacks. Just nothing like it from a strategy standpoint.

The split map works well. Each faction is kind of asymmetric - how you win is the same but how you get there is different. France is the easiest to play because you're just racing for fortresses, Austria is playing the long game, and Prussia/Prag are trying to balance two sides of the map and focus on efficiency/area control because they have lots of generals but only one supply train. The political phase adds another hurdle that you need to figure out because some of those political cards you don't want in opponents hands.

Not necessarily a pro or con but there are some important play things that come up in expert play (Silesia annex, French demilitarization, good with Hussars) that don't come up in casual play but definitely put a thumb on the scale between experienced and unexperienced players. The deal making part of the game is a tack on and I probably have made one deal in 15-20 plays.

It's on Rally the Troops and the implementation is good (except the deal making). I definitely think it's better in person though. If you don't need all the bells and whistles of Maria and have 4 players, I think Friedrich is just as fun.

i think no pun intended and or shut up and sit down have a pretty interesting video on Arcs and their thoughts on his game design. if i remember correctly they argue that his game design is pretty innovative and will continue to influence future board game design, and they do make a similar point with wether they are objectively well designed. there is also an interesting talk from wehrle where he talks about his design and how sometimes it is very much about an emotion or feeling that he's trying to convey and designs the board game around that. shut up and sit down also has a really good video on john company and how this game is more something akin to an art piece, that will make you feel like a horrible person, and is designed to provide this experience, but that's also the reason why so many people hate it.

as for the art style, kyle ferrin has to be THE board game artist. i think he very much encompasses what board game art should be, it's a really appealing, comfy, playful, but also excentric art style. just looking at games with his art style makes me want to play them, it goes so well with the physical aspect of board games. i am really not into styles that look like digital fantasy or sci fi concept art, or anime or whatever and i think in the context of board games a lot of board game art falls flat or misses the mark and does not capture what makes board games unique to art forms of entertainment.

GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

TQ: what's the best Gurps supplement based on a licensed IP (Prisoner, Deadlands, Discworld, etc)?

All of the 3E and most of the Gurps 4E books were originally laid out with QuarkExpress. It's one of the reasons the × symbol changes to ¥ when you try to copy/paste it.
(Quark can continue to burn in hell where it belongs, though— InDesign is -way- easier to deal with!

It's just the cliché of a galactic multi-ethnic empire where the characters are free traders going from point to point in a sub-sector managing their shit and what-not. It just became some of that "reinventing the wheel" kind of thing where I've come to a point to think to myself "then... why not use OTU?", it's not like my friends know anything about the lore and GURPS Traveller flashes out the OTU setting pretty neatly, a way better material than what I can come with in the able time. But hey, GURPS Space is amazing, honestly, a solid tool kit, just a shame that I didn't make anything all that good. Maybe next time. Not that the work is going to the bin, just not using it, I guess.

Way of the Samurai Edition

>What is this?
/TG/ DEVELOPED A GAME
IT IS PLAYABLE. IT HAS BEEN PLAYED.
EXPEDITION is a ~1880s era, Jules Verne-inspired retro-futurist, underground blood soaked adventurescape.
It is a Skirmish wargame. Two players with their own expeditions, on a hexgrid map, explore & fight each other for victory and profit.

3 versions of the rules exist, 2 of which have been playtested. The main one is 2e, to be found :
as with maps, tokens and lore resources.

I guess that'd work, but it probably would be a bit broad.

As an aside I made a page on the wiki for storing our compasses we make, since I think its a good idea to have one place we can put them

My hope is to get to it tomorrow. Long week.

A commendable initiative, but we already have a page for it:

This is a failure on our part for not providing a link to it anywhere though.

Random unit idea for Neo Atlantis. No stats, but a rough outline that could probably be turned into one.

>Crystal Rifleman
>Usable by the Kingdom of Atlantis but most associated with Neo Atlantis
>Has an esoteric marksman rifle that uses Aqua Cristallum to fire a light beam
>Essentially an anti-materiel rifle, most effective against armored targets and monsters
>Can't fire after moving, as it has to 'set up' after doing so
>Blows up on a roll of 1 to hit (like 40k plasma) to reflect Neo Atlantis not being able to make a perfect Aqua Cristallum crystal yet
>Has a more conventional sidearm for if it gets attacked after moving
>Fanbase eternally wars on whether it fits the game ever since being introduced in 4th

show me the screenplay drafts
I have ewok concept art dated to 1981, the earliest verified existence of "Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi" as a distinct concept

also do you REALLY want to trust Lawrence "Now I am Yoda, The Force Awakens is a good film" Kasdan hearsay?

>The screenplay for Jedi was based on a story by Lucas. The script was written by Lucas and Lawrence Kasdan,[f] who allegedly told Lucas that Return of the Jedi was a weak title.[35] Kazanjian echoed Kasdan's concern, and the title was changed to Revenge of the Jedi soon after.
