Ah the old Kickstarter downfall route. Know it well. Company Kickstarter blows up out of all proportion and they can't possibly fulfil all the orders correctly or in a timely manner, all the goodwill they generated at the start turns sour and the company is bought up by one of the two or threee predatory businesses in the industry right now.

Saw it happen to the Dropfleet Guys, and now it's a fucking travesty of it's former glory, and looking at a THIRD edition this august. Similar stuff happened with Spartan Games... but that wasn't a kickstarter so much as their inability to control their Attention Deficit Disorder when they had a comparatively expensive license to support with Halo.

Well, you can still fail rolls in ToC. General rolls have points attached to them, but it's still possible to fail, and there is the extra layer of risk/reward in when/how to spend point, which adds tension to every roll. As for failure in regards to finding clues, I think Gumshoe does a good job of that as well. Having a point just means that you can find a clue using it. If you have a social skill, and you're in a situation where you could get a clue with it, you do. But, you could also spend points on top of that. So, maybe you get a clue from a bouncer with persuade. The antagonists could still come to that bouncer and and find out that he told you that information, which sounds like the kind of thing you're talking about in regards to failure creating interesting situations. You could also spend a persuasion point, and say "I want to make sure that he doesn't tell anyone I was here." Which equates to a "success" in call of cthulhu.

Not sure if I'm explaining this well. All it means is that your players get enough information to move the game state forward. You, as the GM, can still do whatever you want behind the scenes, as long as it makes sense. I guess this feeds into a deeper topic of gming, which is that i feel a lot of times game masters feel that they need the permission of the dice in order to do things, which I don't really think is the case.

I've been running Esoterrorists in a very analogue-horror SCP-office-staff style (less so splatterpunk, the game's default). Gumshoe is intuitive and fun, and being able to pass out the Factbook has been cool for players.

Damn, when I posted this I didn't realise it was at the tail end of a discussion about Gumshoe, lol.

My 2 cents is the difference in opinion mostly comes down to philosophy in the structure of your investigation. I've found that it is more interesting for me to provide clues readily whether I'm playing CoC, Eso or anything, really, and to then put the tension on for the challenges surrounding those clues. I.e. quickly climbing down a fire escape to avoid being discovered in the office of a suspect, sneaking past a cultist, convincing local PD to stay off your back - anything with easily communicable consequences to the investigation. Every time I think of making testing for clues difficult, I'm reminded of every instance of telling players 'you don't find anything', and then they just go 'Oh, that sucks. Can I try again?' to which you either say 'Yeah but time passes' or just say 'No' for what always feels to players to be an arbitrary reason. Gumshoe is right in that what you do with clues is more interesting to players than discovering them in the first place. But that's just my opinion.

Sad to hear news of the passing of Ian Watson

Alongside his more general work in sci-fi, Ian wrote some of the earliest Warhammer 40,000 books, before Black Library was even a thing, such as the Inquisition War trilogy and Space Marine. He had a captivatingly scatalogical take on the setting.

We've always been a small bakery, literally started in my bosses garage selling pastries wholesale to local coffee shops. We've slowly gotten bigger and bigger, a few years ago he threw down serious money on a huge building. Things have been going downhill from there, in all the usual ways: standards falling, squeezing the people who work hard while letting the people who goldbrick kind of skate by. We have vacation time and sick time (a rarity in food service) and the understanding was always no questions asked: your time is your time. I pretty much nuked my sick time year before last because of a health issue I had. I was sick as fuck last week (couldn't get out of bed sick) so I asked if they could just cover my week because I knew I had enough to cover between sick and vacation.

Got my pay stub this week, only sick pay, no vacation. When I asked about it, I got a chatgpt-ass answer about how all vacation time needs to be submitted and approved (something that has *never* been said to anyone before). Fuck that. He's also hired a bunch of his highschool aged kid's friends to replace some of our support staff, they do nothing, treat everyone like shit, and the management has been incredibly shitty to the front of house lately. I'm not the first person who's left recently, and I know I won't be the last.

Bums me out, I put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into that place and I'm definitely taking a pay cut, but fuck, a dude that I've known for a decade couldn't even just give me a heads up, "hey, we've had to change our PTO policy," he waited until I had to get ahold of him? Fucking cowardly.

This thread isn't to argue over what is and isn't OSR. I am using the broad term definition of the term.Let's leave that shit elsewhere.

Now, what I am wondering is what type you like? Are you into simple like B/X clones? Do you like more advanced rules such as 1e/2e? Do you like ultra light like something like knave?

Do you want something that mechanically is more or less a pure clone of a published game? Do you like something that merges some more modern ideas such as a acending AC?

Or do you like stuff like the black hack, tales of argosa or even shadowdark that took the concept of OSR styles but are not built on those mechanics?

This isn't a trolling thread, I am curious on what folks preferences are. What have they read or played they found fun or interesting.

For myself, I need a level of church or fiddly. It makes my brain happy so I don't enjoy something too light. B/X and OSE don't really scratch my itch. I need something at lest AD&D level of fiddly. I thought it might be fun to see where other people landed.

I found B/X a bit simple (and quirky in some areas) and AD&D bit overdone (and lacking in some other areas), so I did what everyone did and made their own game. That's my favourite part of the OSR: people just making their own stuff to do exactly what they want, and most of it being cross-compatible / ripe for stealing from.

I prefer the classic, rather limited OSR--a tight focus on dungeon-crawling, gold for XP--rather than the modern "it's all OSR if you really think about it" style. I find it pretty funny that D&D started out as this fairly specific thing and eventually became generic fantasy toolkit game, and then the OSR community appeared to get back to that fairly specific thing, and then new arrivals showed up as it got popular and turned it into generic fantasy toolkit game, and now you've got OSR for OSR (i.e. CAG). But I don't begrudge people doing their own thing, even if I have no idea why anyone would ever want to play Knave or whatever.

You can use whatever WW2 minis for CoC, just ask your opponent if you're playing the same scale. It plays OK at 28mm, 15mm, 1:72, whatever.

Let's be real, critical role hasn't affected tabletop gamers much because we don't use anything branded D&D so that right there already filters them out. Now that people are fleeing 5e because the novelty has worn off and the problems with the game design of it are just too severe to ignore, I might need to tweak my questionnaire to catch them while vetting applicants, but it might be a few years before I have any room opening at my tables so it's not exactly a pressing concern.

I haven't seen historicals but there's tons of non-GW game players in Tokyo. The miniature game flea market earlier this month had people turn up with battletech, crisis protocol, dystopian wars, alien, heavy gear, eisenfront, infinity, aristeia, defiance, black powder, malifaux, etc.

Problem is most of these are played at irregularly-held privately-run ゲーム会 in community centers and such so you need to find someone who plays your game first then get invited to wherever they're playing at.

Aside from that I hear that Arrows in Akihabara frequently runs non-GW games, never been there myself though because I mostly play in the Tama area.

So I've not been able to find a deeper fluff reason yet but it was their equivalent of the Chaplain and Apothecary's pauldron symbols.

"[P]ersonality models will often have shoulder plates, helmets or breastplates of distinctive design to distinguish their specialist role.
For example, Chaplain's favour skull-shaped shoulder plates and breastplates, Officers have skull and eagle motifs, Medics are distinguished by the snake emblem, and Techmarines with the claw emblem."

The unit stat entries in the same article had common shoulder pad iconograph beside them that matched what that says along with examples for the Librarian, Tactical, Assault and Devastator squads.
