Welcome to yet another glorious day in your officio station revered clerk of the Administratum.
Your efforts in compiling the information on [Vokaris Sector] and its eight subsectors have been further garnering plenty of praise from your peers and lords above your meager station, we implore you to resume your task to gather this stellar data about this sector in our glorious Imperium of Man
A brief reminder that as data comes in to your cogitator station via the servitors around you, you will have to compile it and make this sector whole again.
May the God Emperor continue to guide you clerk Anon.

Hello there, Anons of /tg/. If anyone is still interested in this fun project, here is the whole sector - updated with the discovered planets so far - where we can continue to create together, using the planet generator found on 1d6chan.

We finished up the Ultranox Void sub-sector before and we are about to start rolling for the Bleakthorn Expanse.

Materialist. This is a probable mining colony tied to the homeworld and the 'elected dictator' is a marshal or a corporate representative. The 'frontier' nature of the colony has attracted a lot of dissatisfied individuals or guys just trying to make it rich.
>>
>>97171410
"No, I don't have time for- wait. You're not talking about Monkeigh and those ridiculous space cops. Mong-Uul is ran by the Colonial Marshals, that strain of law enforcement the fishies use to smack strikers with truncheons. Yeah, I've dealt with them before... They're pretty reasonable comparatively."

"The Monkeigh just slaughter any strike or labor dispute but the fish usually negotiate with labor leaders long before any blood is shed which suits our purposes fine. Pretty boring... Though for a lesser species, they are respectable in a way."
>>
>>97171404
I feel like these guys might be decent at melee combat. Their home world has such a high gravity and their supposed to be strong. I could see maybe them having shock troops that fire harpoons to lock them in place so they can bash their skull in.
>>
>>97171450
Holy shit. These guys are a real deal threat to the region... To the Imperium that is. Normal humans probably have very little to fear with a functioning civilization that has a significant portion pushing for a Star Trek society occupying them. If they can avoid extinction, they could give the local high lord a black eye and then some.
>>
>>97171450
Could you imagine being that Guardsman? You survived the Rokko, the scariest fucking things outside of the Yuvvath, then you see this little midget charging you in power armor. At first you laugh, then it pulverizes the Commissar with its bare hands before tearing through what's left of your platoon. And then the Necrons show up.

Sorry for effortposting your Friday

1. What systems have you found that have made combat engaging?
2. What do you think is a satisfying duration for most fights? Over quickly? Or minimal resolution (followed by optional exposition)
3. Do you find a sort of "bidding" of dice (such as in Riddle of Steel and her derivatives) fun? Or do you prefer the dice that you roll to be fairly consistent/static in their outcomes?
4. Do you find "maneuvers"- like in Mythras- fun? Do you find that tracking a number of maneuvers grinds combat resolution down too slowly? What about a sort of freeform ability to spend "bonus success" on maneuvers (sort of "fiction first")?

I'm thinking about my system. It's very inspired by Mythras, Forbidden Lands, and Riddle of Steel but I'm unsatisfied with it. I'd like to really look at the fundamentals- the statistics, the base mechanics, the speed of resolving each round- before tacking on additional details. Right now, I have attacker declaring an attack and defender declaring a reaction (dodge, parry, or block with shield), rolling a dice pool (attribute+professional rank+gear bonus) and comparing successes. Extra successes are spent on dealing more damage or performing maneuvers. I'm curious if anyone here has experiences in systems that they've found particularly fun, fast, engaging, and place a lot of decision pressure on the player (to replicate- in a way- the stress of combat)

>What systems have you found that have made combat engaging?
My own. First was my Halo TTRPG, but I suspect that's more the GM being good about enemy positioning and forcing us in turn to do the same. I haven't had a chance to test it but I have a Sonic the Hedgehog TTRPG where, to keep the pace up, a lot of Actions are also Reactions, consuming Actions from your next Turn to allow combat to move quicker.

>What do you think is a satisfying duration for most fights? Over quickly? Or minimal resolution (followed by optional exposition)
Ideally, 3-5 rounds at most. It's a good mix of fun combat without it taking all day.

>Do you find a sort of "bidding" of dice (such as in Riddle of Steel and her derivatives) fun? Or do you prefer the dice that you roll to be fairly consistent/static in their outcomes?
Not my cup of tea. I generally prefer dicepools for combat, fixed rolls for skills and other stuff. I like player investments to matter heavily either way though.

>Do you find "maneuvers"- like in Mythras- fun? Do you find that tracking a number of maneuvers grinds combat resolution down too slowly? What about a sort of freeform ability to spend "bonus success" on maneuvers (sort of "fiction first")?
I'm unfamiliar, but I think that having more options is never bad, but using all of your options at once being optimal is a slog. Basically, have the depth there for players who want to engage with it, but if you just want to play a beatstick, you should be able to do that and succeed too.
>>
>>97170048
Idk, but my totally original donut steel way of doing things is gaining dice on good positioning or where there'd be an advantage to roll against a target number on shooting and a contested roll for melee. Having something that lines up the actual action that enables the player to manipulate the outcome means the action is more engaging due to player input. That also means the entire process of decision, action, result, has a bigger player fingerprint.
>>
>>97170048
>1. What systems have you found that have made combat engaging?
I don't mind systems like D&D, PF, DC20, ACKS, C&C, "X" without Number, Veiled Riders
2. What do you think is a satisfying duration for most fights? Over quickly? Or minimal resolution (followed by optional exposition)
I prefer less over the top where it's roll to see if you hit/succeed (GM rolling to counter) and how much you do/what you do should be the baseline over 10 rolls for combat. I can see 3-5 rolls for crafting or long stuff. Especially for something that takes more than one session to do. However you should be able to have your +/-X added to your roll as then roll again to see how much you do. Not a back and forth for 3 mins rolling to see if you even do something.
>3. Do you find a sort of "bidding" of dice (such as in Riddle of Steel and her derivatives) fun? Or do you prefer the dice that you roll to be fairly consistent/static in their outcomes?
I can see cases for both. It all depends on the group, GM, and type of "adventure" the group is going for.
>4. Do you find "maneuvers"- like in Mythras- fun? Do you find that tracking a number of maneuvers grinds combat resolution down too slowly? What about a sort of freeform ability to spend "bonus success" on maneuvers (sort of "fiction first")?
I like the idea of them and think they can be very fun, especially when it help counter minmaxers and let's martials classes have more to do than "I attack 1-4 times."
>>
>>97170048
It's heavely depends on system. In osr focus on general exploration and strategic resources managment, so single fight need to be fast, becouse they litle more significant than single trap

Reaction rules - fight can don't start at all.
Morale rules - you don't need kill all of them to win.
Magic - powerfull tend to be "autowin" option.
In my belowed ACKS fighters gets cleave and bonus damage as they level, so they become good against many low HD enemies.
Maneuvers can be fun, in my expirence often used only on low level when MU not powerful enought.

I read Labyrinthus and it's very generalistic, it's good because it adapts and combines a RPG into the sex elements, but it doesn't really create an entirely new unique original game out of sex.
You and me /tg/ must create a new system that can be adapted not just to tabletop RPGs but as the building blocks for anything from a novel to a puzzle to a management simulator.

I've yet to see any serious problems with it from my admittedly quite limited experience of it. The system seems to attract such derision and I want to know why.

Late to the thread, but it was really nice to read through.

I can only speak for myself, but I've found that I enjoy deciding when and what I roll (unprompted) as a player in certain scenarios because I enjoy roleplaying failure as much as I enjoy roleplaying success. I like the unpredictable aspect of it and find it refreshing.

In my admittedly limited experience with pbta, the GM dislikes this because they feel the rules are not being respected and (I guess) they are forced to invent consequences for failure when it "makes no sense" to the story.

This is likely more of an issue with current GM in particular, and I can't really figure out where it's coming from, but i feel some of the advice in the book is being taken out of context. They generally cop out on consequences, and few bad things ever happen to our characters. The world is constantly under threat, but as soon as a player puts even the slightest effort into combating it, their efforts succeed (even if the player is not really into it).

I can't imagine this is a common issue with the system, though I'd be interested in hearing if others have had similar experiences. The rules seem sane. Guess I just needed to vent. Carry on.
>>
>>97171176
>This is likely more of an issue with current GM in particular
Given your description, I would say so.

For my own experience, I have played a campaign of Masks, and run two campaigns of Avatar Legends. Among PbtA games, these are very closely related, since they come from the same developer. They're still distinct in terms of the ways they mechanically pull of their concepts, but there are familiarities between the archetypes used for playbooks, and both games are about youths figuring themselves out. I also tooled with Dungeon World for a little while at one point, and it was a fairly mixed bag of an experience, and I've been planning some things for a game of Perfect Draw.

In my experience, both as a player and a GM, I found that I was interested in consequences. Both myself and the other GM were interested in dealing them out, and myself and the other players were interested in the complications caused by the game mechanics. An unexpected and/or undesired consequence can really stretch your brain and lead to some interesting character moments, and I feel like these kinds of games are very good at creating situations like that. Especially for the games that I've especially favored, where your characters' inner struggles and emotions are core to the themes, a situation going sideways can really demand you to get into their feelings and even allow yourself to make bad choices on purpose to resolve something (the problem at hand, their frustrations, etc).

Exactly! Complications and consequences challenge the characters and are fun to play out for the players. I can't help but feel that in the game I mention in >>97171176, the GM has already decided the story they want.

It's weird, like even when the players are into it, sessions end with this weird "yes, but", like the game is some kind of discovery writing excercise and every session needs to end on a cliffhanger.

Weirdly, whatever danger there was at the end of the last session is usually resolved within the first 10 minutes of the next session.

Glad we're not the norm for the system. Probably time to call it quits or have a talk.

played a few different PBTA games with different GMs. every time without fail it hits a point where they give up on the whole "however..." fail-forward or "you get a bonus" extra, whatever the particular effect is.

like you can see the exact point they sign and simply say, "you try to pick the lock and...yeah, you just don't pick the lock."

>The world is constantly under threat, but as soon as a player puts even the slightest effort into combating it, their efforts succeed (even if the player is not really into it).
Oddly enough I have had a similar experience. Consequences were usually more tame or limited, and it sort of felt like the GM was waiting for the ideal moment where things would be more dramatic or high stakes.

I think it might be a mix of the GM already having an idea, even subconsciously, of a sort of rough map for a session, on top of possibly having trouble coming up with good consequences on the fly.
I can distinctly remember more than a few times where someone rolled a 7 or 8, and the GM just gave up on having a consequence and just had it succeed outright.

I meant to type 3/5.
>>
>>97168005
The only time I'd go 3/5 on a heavy is if I plan on putting IJJ on it, no go in Introtech.

The Annihilator is decent, even with it's 2/3.

And the ANH-1G from Klondike is just hilarious.

>An early post-Pentagon Civil War variant developed by both Clans Coyote and Star Adder, the 1G had an ER PPC in the right torso, and three Gauss rifles (one in each arm, and one in the left torso) to provide hard hitting firepower. Each Gauss Rifle had two tons of ammunition. Ten double heat sinks were more than adequate to keep the machine cool. BV (2.0) = 2,274[6]

Are Sloth pilots lying down? I can't tell, but it doesn't look like there's any other way to orient them. Even Franklin in the cartoon looked like he would have been lying down.

The Emperor can't be dethroned without the Imperium ending, so that's a catch-22.
>>
>>97168873
With how powerful Abaddon the despoiler has become with all of the blessings of the dark gods and what not. Do you think if he killed the emperor and sat on the golden throne the Imperium could still survive in some way under its new chaos overlords?
>>
>>97168642
>So they worship the power of the throne and not the man that sits on it right?
Quite a common thing. Just ask any Roman Catholic.

What would happen if a Chaos God were to be killed? Would they slowly reform from the emotions of the galaxy's life or would those emotions cease to exist?

chaos gods cannot die, they are not really living things, they are reflections of sapient emotion in realspace. You are putting the cart before the horse here

>In the game Werewolf: The Apocalypse, the Garou (werewolves) were made to defend the earth from the cosmic forces that threaten to tear it apart. The Garou fight against the Wyrm, the destroyer. It is a struggle against nearly insurmountable odds, especially considering the rivalry between many tribes. These rivalries make it almost impossible for the werewolves to present a unified front against a cosmic force that pervades reality.
>From this morass of hatred and mutual betrayal, there is little hope that the Garou can emerge triumphant against a foe so well armed as the Wyrm. The Wyrm promises money, power, sex, and whatever else the heart desires to its followers while the Garou receive no reward for their striving. It drives them deeper and deeper into despair, or into betrayal so deep that they choose to serve the Wyrm instead.
