>Be me.
>Lord General of the Nordican 1225th/ defacto governor of Nordica II.
>For the last few years we've been abandoned by the wider Imperium to an ice world that very much resembles our home.
>In that time we've constructed the city of New Yur.
>A sprawling metropolis surrounded by a network of trenches visible from orbit dug by the kriegers and valhallans.
>We've also made more or less peace with the orks we were originally sent here to fight, and even made alliances with the ruinous powers, but those truces only last for one day a year.
>A day that is fast approaching.
>Candlemass brings peace, but also war to Nordica II every year without fail.
>This year however the orks have decided to convert the former colloseum constructed by khorne worshipers in the ruins of a space hulk that crashed here into an arena for a sport they're apparently calling "Blood Bowl."
>I will be attending the first of these games on Candlemass day, which is set to pit greenskins against some surviving khorne worshipers they've captured.
>Emperor willing this will be the beginning of true peace to our world.
>But knowing Candlemass that seams unlikely and I'll be waiting the whole time for some new threat to emerge.

>Speaking of Kriegers, I notice a few sneaking out of the house of a known family of Tau sympathizers, with bloody shovels in their hands
>I don't like Tau either, but that is a bit dark even for me
>Hmmm, not my problem
>No doubt one day there is going to be a confrontation between the puritan fanatic and pragmatic/corrupt factions of the Imperials on this planet, but until then, I will try to keep both sides happy, and then pick the most likely side to win once open violence occurs

Not useless, just... measurably worse
Siege Tyrants are still terminators, and the +100 pts they pay on top of similar WS4 regular power fist termies is like getting a banestrike combi (that's +50), keeping the regular combi, and then getting optional krak missile ammo for further +10 ppm.
That'd let them scare any would-be Assault Veterans counter, and kill a stray Rhino, which seem to be common nowadays
>>

"Bring what's cool" does not result in "Oops nothing but inductii" you fucking disingenuous cunt. Spamming is strictly sweaty WAACfag territory.
>>
>>97229204
... wouldn't 3000 pts of Kratos with Tactical/Inductii escorts actually be a viable army, though? As in, Kratos need specialized tank hunters to be dealt with (AV14), but they themselves can kill the tank hunters sent to destroy them.
And most tank hunters sacrifice the anti-horde capabilities necessary to deal with massed Troops, so they won't be able to defeat the Inductii. Only the base Vindicator may have a chance, and that's already a compromise down from the laser one.

Anti-Heroes, but more of the "I did bad in the past; I can't undo what I did, but I'm going to do what I can to make the world a better place from now on" type than the "Ends justify the means for the greater good" type.
>>

I feel like most players default to anti-heroes.

I mean, everyone likes Wolverine more than Cyclops and Han Solo more than Luke Skywalker.

I prefer playing neutrals. Having characters with gray morals makes interacting with the world feel a bit more free. I wouldn’t call them anti-heroes though, just normal jackoffs that got pushed into a situation.

TTRPGs are a social game first and foremost. That means there's unspoken rules that vary from group-to-group, but a common one is "acceptable breaks from sensibility" in the name of game experience or table cohesion. It's the kind of thing that keeps the bitter rivalry between the Elf and the Dwarf largely to amusing banter and not outright PvP. It's an innate instinct: nobody likes to spoil the atmosphere, because that's a large part of the appeal of a good game (alongside the freedom).

That being said, there are also times when the group's course of action is patently retarded and you can't meaningfully push back on it without feeling like you'd cause a big fight over nothing (and then feel obligated to keep comrades away from the consequences), or something a character cannot abide has to be "sanded over" somewhat, or you as the GM don't want to cultivate the feeling that you're antagonizing your players by hitting them over the head with "you murdered someone because it was convenient and didn't even take measures to cover your tracks" or whatever unhinged misadventure occurred because something about the player position of the table cause human beings to lose IQ.

Have you ever had that feeling? I think I see enough greentexts to think it's common.

>>
>>97228101
Correct. Only some faggot who's 'plot!' is more important than accurately reacting to the party's actions would pull this shit.
NPC's plots should follow the "every one has a plan until they get punched in the face' mentality. They should have things they're gonna do, til the pcs hit them, then they have to adapt to that bases off what, if any information they have on them.
It should never be "A happens, B happens, then C happens, no matter what!" That's some tard tier rail roading shit that needs to be shot and thrown into a ditch.
>>
>>97228087
>That means there's unspoken rules that vary from group-to-group
This is the big problem. Make those spoken. Don't be weird or preachy about it but making what you, the gm who is running the game and actually in charge of the social event, clear on expectations in simple ways removes a lot of crossed wires about unspoken anything. Everyone assuming they're all on the same page is how miss communications happen, build and get fucked up.
Just say something like
>Part of the game is based on a party or group cohesion, so everyone should er on the side of being agreeable with each other's player characters. Some bickering is fun but we're not doing pvp
or
>we can do randomly murdering and burning villages if you guys really want but an evil campaign isn't what I want to do for very long
and let them get it out of their system before moving onto something else.
Just talk to each other, be a bit flexible but also know and maintain the social side in clear and concise ways. This may at some point mean you have a player who doesn't fit. That's okay. Not everyone has to get along forever about everything. If they clearly want divergent enough things its totally normal and fair to tell them its not working out and they need to find a different group.

>take soulless Primarishit model
>insert classic Forge World MkIV SOVL
>??????
>PROFIT!
And the best part is, because the precedent established by Games Workshop Group v. Chapterhouse Studio explicitly protects compatible third-party accessories, there is nothing GW can do about it but cry and exclude them from their subsidized events.

Thats why >>97229044 is the better alternative. Cagliostro makes clones and transfers his soul from one body to another, but he doesn't have to prepare the clones in advance. He can just alchemize a new body into existence from ambient materials on the spot.
At one point he even has his body vaporized by a trap that specifically destroys alchemically transmuted materials, and he still comes back in less than a minute with the explanation of "Fuck me, I almost died there. I had to juggle my soul between states to buy myself the time to make a new body for me to inhabit without it ever actually passing on. I wasn't sure that would work. Neat."

Which essentially makes Cagliostro objectively better than a Lich, because not only does he have a shorter respawn timer and isn't stuck in a gross corpse body, but he's not limited by a Phylactery as a point of vulnerability. As long as his soul is intact and he isn't in a vacuum devoid of raw material to work with, thats all he needs to respawn.

The numbers consistently show that implementation of AI results in a drop in productivity. Moreover, in the case of tabletop RPGs, I can observe that the time spent on prompting AI and editing the output to reach what I would consider a baseline level of acceptable quality is greater than the amount of time it would take me to simply write the things myself.

>which, though still work in progress, is sure to stand as one of humanity's masterpieces
I'm not even going to bother contesting this because we simply can't know what the end state of the technology will look like. I know what it looks like now, however. The possibility that a future iteration might be better doesn't give any value to wasting my time with the inferior products that exist today. Not when I can achieve better results without them.

Why are major CYOA releases so sporadic these days?

I think that D&D 2e/3.X/5e, Pathfinder, and Draw Steel's cosmologies all have major issues with scale and in-game practicality. Setting authors tend to get weird about scale whenever extra worlds are involved, and these are no exception.

These games' settings want to fulfill multiple conflicting desires:
• #1: One or more "flagship" fantasy worlds: the Realms/Greyhawk/Dragonlance trio in 2e, mostly just the Realms in 5e, Golarion in Pathfinder, Orden in Draw Steel.
• #2: A vast universe full of so many other worlds, so that GMs can feel cool about their own homebrew worlds somehow sharing the same universe.
• #3: Otherworldly planes full of celestials, demons, devils, fairies, and the like.
• #4: These planes are so vast that they influence many worlds simultaneously! We have heard since 2e about how the Blood War has spilled into and ruined many worlds. Pathfinder's Hell has "countless malebranche," each specifically tasked with conquering a whole world for Hell.
• #5: The adventures that take place on a "flagship" fantasy world are of super-great import. Their stakes and consequences ripple throughout even otherworldly planes.
• #6: The planes and their cities and hierarchies should be approachable in-game and understandable, not totally mind-boggling.

Fantasy is the last place there should be multiverse slop, all you need is one main terrestrial setting, a divine/heavenly realm, and a netherworld
>>
>>97227634
>"Only paragon-tier and higher heroes can inflict damage on this monster".
This is the norm in some settings.
>>
Multiverses and parallel timelines are the worst thing that can happen in any story for multiple reasons. Scale just happens to be one of them. These are concepts that appeal to literal retards that find the whole idea that there is more than one of a thing the most mind-blowing shit ever and genuinely believe that that makes them smarter.
>>
When it comes to worldbuilding, I use only 2-3 planes. Depending is the afterlife is canon.
>>
i really don't see the problem. it makes it easy to discern which world to use for which type of adventure.
if you want coherent worldbuilding you should read a book

GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

Thread question: How often do you use an official GURPS setting? Which are your favorites?

I'm gonna do a bunch of Soviet/Russian prototypes and rare production firearms using the new gun book, if anyone wants I'll dump it here once I'm done.

please do. I would definitely make use of them, I'm about to start a modern campaign with lots of ex-soviet mercs.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Something about taxation is theft. I don't remember the details but a really negative responce to a fairly basic part of the game like 1:1 time.
>>

That's it?
Those are far less taxing than AD&D poindexters make it out to be. It's negligible even. OD&D has higher upkeep and even that is easy to afford. ACKS characters will be collecting taxes at a certain point and will have no problems affording their upkeep when it starts to ramp up.

I think I remember something about taxing dungeon loot directly.
Not upkeep cost but local lord smells the gold and pops in to take his tenth (or more) because the dungeon is on land he claims to own.

NP.
There's buckets of character generators for most of the retroclones and such.

Depends. If you have STR on positives then it is not that mandatory, and you can probably complement it with temporaly buffs. If you are at 0 or at negatives then it becomes a lot more critical considering there is not that many damage boost with investigator and with two man party you need to be dealing that damage often.

My strength is 10 so I'm at least not taking a penalty. 5th level is probably when I'll grab it since that's also when studied combat is available and I prefer being able to share extracts with infusion first.

Bro have we read the same AP? I do agree in regards to Ironfang and RoW, but S&S is a goddamn mess. Owlcat's RT is also a peak into what ship mechanics for it could've been (hot flaming garbage).
>>
APs are not only garbage in and of themselves but they also inherently defeat the point of TTRPGs as a medium. Such rigid dog shit is better served for video games.

This is the nature of the beast, anon. You’re right, but we’re here with them and we need to deal with them.
