>then I'd have to die and randomly lose my species
Well if your character is so racist that they'd rather have non-functional legs, I guess?

>Also, you gotta be Humanoid, if you're a Fey or something else
Well, a Warforged or Autognome aren't born, so that's out. A Plasmoid doesn't even have legs, so that doesn't qualify either. A Fairy can simply fly, so any sort of device just weighs you down.
>which sounds like a bad time if I care about what that species gave
And if you care about what the species gave, then most Fey don't offer much. Extra jump distance from Satyr? No. Extra speed from a Centaur? No. Changeling to disguise yourself? Not really.

I guess you could play as a Kalashtar and go full Professor X?
>>
>>97174030
>that they'd rather have non-functional legs, I guess?
Maybe? If the cost wasn't so high. A Human losing their bonus Origin Feat or a Goliath losing their Giant Form or Dragonborn losing their Breath Weapon and Flight, could be a big blow to a PC.
The Mechanical Wonder exists just for PCs like that, not a problem, really.
>I guess you could play as a Kalashtar and go full Professor X?
Yes! That would be a cool Aberrant Mind Sorcerer or Psion whenever that comes out.
>>
>>97174076
>A Human losing their bonus Origin Feat or a Goliath losing their Giant Form or Dragonborn losing their Breath Weapon and Flight, could be a big blow to a PC.
Not really? Most origin feats are very mediocre. Dragonbreath is mildly better than just using an attack/cantrip at level 11, and flight is just 10 minutes per long rest.
A Goliath growing large is potentially more key, but you're also already missing out on the movement bonus there if you're relying on the Mechanical Wonder, so Giant Form is only notable for grappling.
Plus it's also a 10% chance that you do stay with the same species anyway. Technically higher, since you can spend Inspiration to try to reroll it. Or since the DM can choose, you can always just talk to him if you think it's gonna ruin your build that badly.

Dunk On 'Em Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>How do I get started?

>Some bad news on this front I’m afraid folks: we’ve been informed that the shipment of books will not be arriving until the 27th of December now. As a result, deliveries will not begin until the new year. We apologize for this delay, but it is completely outside of our control. Whilst we were expecting a delay of a few days due to the busy season, we weren’t expecting nearly two weeks. We’re currently discussing dates with the logistics company and will have more info in the next update.

Yep that's it, they had to rummage around undercover as natives of the planet and that was basically impossible with that big ass power armor proudly flaunting the Ebon Chalice emblem and all the cyberimpant stuff magos ends up carrying, so they ended up cosplaying as mercenaries with good old plate armors and crossbows. It was easier for the rest of the team especially for the savage world assassin having a blast sneaking around without the risk of being spotted by cameras etc. Ended up being good fun for everyone, even the psyker that kicked the bucked while pleading for his life about "not being a filthy sorcerer i swear"

When I ran Acreage I wasn't that demanding. Acreage has like five spaceports, and it's a plot point in Maggots in the Meat that off-world mercs are flooding to Acreage to participate in the war of succession, or to sell off-world guns and armour because the people on Acreage are willing to pay through the nose for them.

The town the acolytes visit has guys in flak with Munitorum-grade hunting rifles even, and they absolutely fuck the common musketmen of Acreage. That being said, if they're undercover as natives then they definitely did have to grade down - but as it stood it would've been plausible to present themselves as off-world mercs. But your game, and if they had fun they had fun, right.

It only happened a couple of times to me, and it was explicitly DM's attempt to either make a Gandalf figure, or a parody of the Gandalf figure. The rest of times wizards are either middle-aged backstabbing scumbags with goatees, or surly, buxom witches. An old greybeard is a rare sight.

So one of my players is making a minotaur character, whose whole deal is that he was a slave in the Local Evil Kingdom that broke free and will encounter the party during their travels to join them. In my setting, minotaurs are one of many different species of beastmen that frequently raid the kingdom and generally make life difficult for the kingdom's expansion, so there's a lot of local animosity towards them and he figured that means it'd make sense they might enslave some of the beastmen they capture. I'm inclined to approve the concept, it's straightforward enough and the party will definitely be sympathetic to that kind of character. However, when I stopped to think on it, the question came up in my head of what and how exactly they'd keep beastmen around as slaves for?

Usually, the three primary reasons slaves were kept were for labor, sex, and entertainment. Sex doesn't work because, aside from not wanting to wander down into magical realm territory, beastmen in my setting all look properly animal-like rather than just looking like humans with some minor animal features. So that leaves labor and entertainment. Both make sense on the surface, but labor might not actually make sense? You wouldn't exactly train a beastman to do house chores, and while most beastmen species are stronger than humans and could do lots of heavy labor, that means they're harder to keep passive too since something like a minotaur could easily kill most humans with their bare hands. That leaves entertainment, and the only thing I could see beastmen slaves being used for there (other than I guess a fucked up circus) is as gladiators. That's definitely fitting for a minotaur, but I don't want to pidgeonhole my player into only one specific kind of backstory if there's other things his character could have been

What do you guys think, is there something I'm not considering? Some field or detail that would make keeping minotaurs and other beastmen slaves worth all the danger and effort?
>>
>>97172071
>So that leaves labor and entertainment. Both make sense on the surface, but labor might not actually make sense?
https://antifandom.com/forgottenrealms/wiki/Slavery
>Magical enslavement—such as by mind-controlling enchantment magic—allowed unparalleled control over victims, but still had limitations. A slave was unable to perform creative work under this influence, as free thought was required for creativity.

OSR is archeology. it is strictly about the preservation of B/X (Moldvay/Cook). the goal is to take those specific rules, clean up the layout, clarify the wording, and organize them so they are actually usable at the table, but the engine remains identical. it preserves how it actually was.

NSR dumps the specific mechanics to chase the feeling people remember having, the sense of novelty, weirdness, high lethality, and player agency. it uses modern design to recreate the impact DnD had back then, rather than the literal rules. it's DnD how we imagine it was, not how it actually played.

Close, but no cigar. It's as much about B/X as it is about OD&D and AD&D. (And occasionally a bit of Holmes and BECMI.)

Traditional games?

Is there a super system that is purpose built to integrate RPG scale, Skirmish, scale and wargame scale scenarios into one campaign?

I think that would be pretty epic. You might first go on an rpg party scale infiltration mission to get some kind of advantage for the next session that is a wargame, where if you succeeded, maybe you can hide a unit anywhere on the tabletop.
I think I heard people saying that it was kind of attempted in some Old DnD releases and ACKS, but it never seems to really be all that focused on or displayed in action much.

Would totally be a niche gameplay style that would require a group both up for rpg's and wargames, but I think it could be pretty epic.
