What happens when Ceasing To Exist Approach ends? Are everyone's memories of your false identity erased by Arcane Fate? Do they remember you but think you disappeared without a trace? Can you get an Artifact with your Background dots, bury it in a treasure chest before ending the Charm, then dig it up in your true identity; or try to set up something to get the organization you are suddenly leading bequeathed to one of your old Resplendent Destinies?(I'm guessing the Storyteller would make it easier said than done, of course)Just...I think I understand what happens when you activate the Charm. But how does everything resolve when it *ends*? What happens when your actual identity begins to exist again? Also, I'm guessing that any children under Ceasing To Exist would take after the original identity instead of the current one? Is that correct?
I have a hard time appreciating cosmic horror. It comes up in certain tabletop RPGs, everywhere from the Cthulhusphere to some depictions of aberrations in D&D and Pathfinder, such as the daelkyr and Xoriat in Eberron. What really makes me lose my interest is whenever cosmic horror writing overuses explicit mentions of mad[dening/ness], [sane/sanity/insane/insanity], [ineffable/indescribable], some variation of "understanding of [the world/reality]," and so on. It feels stilted to me. It feels like more telling than showing. It feels like the author desperately trying to tell me how cool and scary something is. I cannot pinpoint precisely why, but I cannot appreciate this brand of writing.Worst of all is when "Well, their goals are inscrutable" is used to justify a seeming lack of motives. Is there a variety of cosmic horror, particularly in tabletop RPGs, that is less in-your-face about this subject?
>>96644683Yes they are. If you're making it cute or fuckable its not cosmic horror anymore. The overall enshitificaton of all things via marketing has made cosmic horror into a soda stream flavour. Of course you don't get it.
>>96645135you say that but you seem to be exclusively triggered by waifus
the essence of cosmic horror is to suddenly realize you are known by something you cannot know in return. some element of [being known] must be a twist, which is why all good cosmic horror is a slow revelation. now that we as a culture all "know the secret" from cultural inundation, cosmic horror really only works as a surprise facet of a work rather than the main draw. in other words, and tragically, the storyteller must subvert your expectations to cosmically horrify you. i know, it sucks, but that's how it is.the simplest formula for cosmic horror is>write a gang stalking plot but the gang is god and the schizophrenia is contagiouscosmic horror is the feeling you get when you eat half a sandwich and then realize the bread is moldy. and then you see that everyone is eating moldy bread. and they're all laughing and smiling and you can't tell if they're blissfully unaware that they're eating moldy bread or if they are laughing at you for finally catching on. and then you see moldy bread everywhere you go. you've been eating mold your whole life. really, mold has been here longer than you have. and then you hear a voice urging you to eat more mold. surely you're just sick from eating so much mold and not thinking clearly. but what if you're not? what if the mold is something bigger? then you learn your community was founded by persecuted mold cultists. mold cultists? that's preposterous. and so on and so forth until you kill yourself to cleanse your body of mold and your great grand nephew moves into your water-damaged new england mansion, finds your scribbled journals and lights your house on fire when he realizes it's irrevocably mold-infesteddoes that make sense at all? cosmic horror is just creative writing to explain what it's like to be autistic or schizophrenic
>>96646213>cosmic horror is the feeling you get when you eat half a sandwich and then realize the bread is moldy.beautifully put, this is exactly why i can't take it seriously
>>96646239horror, much like comedy, is a product of context and must continually "up the ante" to keep up with the passage of time. shock is key, and things that would terrify an audience in the 1920s would leave a jaded 2020s audience completely unphased. kind of like how video games have gradually broken the fourth wall more and more often to get an emotional response from a playerbase that has already seen it all

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR-era D&D, derived systems, and compatible content.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons as played in the game's first decade — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! >>96640357Buying equipment and gear is by far the slowest part of char gen, so equipment packages are great for cutting down on time that could otherwise be spent playing. I have six premade equipment packs for each class to roll on (just weapons and armor sets, with a few quirky things here and there) and then everyone rolls or chooses twice on a d20 list of adventuring gear. Works great for me
>>96640357I think equipment packages are the best way to sped up chargen as long as they are mostly conocerned with small, misc shit like clothing, tools and rations. Important stuff like armor and weapons should be bought directly, specially in AD&D where weapon types actually matter.

>>96645720As an extension to this, it's worth noting that magical protection still requires the toil of a skilled ward priest and the correct arcane resources to make, even in its simplest form (paint). Not just any pleb can mix manticore's skin oil into damson pulp and talc, wave a femur stave over it and paint the correct symbols onto a warrior and render them immune to enemy magic and certain weapons- it requires a lot of knowledge, skill and experience to do it right, and whilst even simple wards can do incredible things (there are methods to make paint that allows bare skin to be inviolable by conventional attacks from range- arrows will bounce harmlessly away unless you actually stab someone with one by hand!), most commonly attainable wards are fairly specialized and situational, and for outfitting even a small militia the average force is better off investing in conventional body protection. Most warriors in more developed states that use such methods are either mavericks/eccentrics or very highly trained individuals, or wizards themselves. That said, in more tribal/"barbarian" cultures (think the ancient Britons or Germanic tribes at the time of Rome, or a great deal of pre-Roman societies) where access to decent armour is limited but strong traditions of folk magic thrive, it is much more common for warriors- male and female- to rely on wards and to fight scantily clad, to great effect. Necessity is the mother of invention, and often it is genuinely more practical for these people to rely on protective magic than conventional armour, as they completely lack the resources to make large amounts of even basic armour, whilst the wisdom and skill of their mages is some of the greatest in the world (and are often motivated by the desire to preserve their craft and their people rather than money). In fact, many of the finest ward priests are from these backwards people, and great kings have sought them out for their knowledge.
>>96645811One slight exception to the "the more implausible it is that it would protect anything, the better it is" rule is shields; whilst harder to manufacture than paint, a well-warded shield is still much easier to produce than actual armour, and it is still a shield! In part this is due to the symbolic nature of the shield itself, and in part due to its helpful status as a canvas for applying protective markings. The big downside of shields is that they have to be USED as shields to work; a dragon's burning breath will be harmlessly deflected or even extinguished midair by a properly made fyrebane but just carrying one won't make you fireproof! Some maniacs actually get wards tattooed directly onto their skin. These wards are some of the most powerful of all, but aside from having the same drawback as paint (must be exposed to work), having warded pigment scribed into your very skin can have very, very bad side-effects, ranging from becoming weirdly magnetic to certain evil spirits and magically-attuned monsters, to being affected by the magic and going mad. A great king whose name is now lost to time once had himself tattooed from head to toe in extremely potent wards, and was rendered borderline indestructible by external forces, but he became consumed with battle-lust and paranoia, to the point that one night he butchered his entire court in a fit of hysteric rage, and then slit his own throat out of a mix of remorse and insanity; in the end, he was his own unmaker. As a TLDR to all that, the average Joan is probably better fighting with normal armour. If you're facing very specific enemies, filthy rich/well connected, a bit eccentric but with the skill to back it up or if you live in a backwater village that relies on folk magic anyway, a breastplate might actually offer less protection than enchanted ink scrawled on your naked chest.
