>Terminator 1
>Heavily implied Novikov self-consistency principle; future cannot be altered, and attempts to alter the future result in it occurring (Reese getting with Sarah Connor creates John Connor, the Terminator's hand allows SkyNet to reverse engineer)
>Terminator 2
>lol actually you can change the future
Does Cameron not understand how time travel works, or did Gale Anne Hurd and William Wisher do the heavy lifting for the scripts and just weren't on the same page?

Either it's a fixed loop where nothing can change and the future is unalterable. Which means that Sarah is always destined to give birth to John, who will then go on to defeat Skynet, and nothing Skynet can do can change that fact. Which means that time will always make sure that happens. Sarah could have sat at home watching TV while the Terminator tried everything it could to kill her and she would always be totally safe. Unless she isn't, at which point that means the future can be altered and your argument defeats itself.

>They're travelling to or creating an alternate timeline/dimension
Yeah, it's almost like the very nature of time travel itself is paradoxical and Skynet was taking a final desperate shot in the dark to save it's own existence, without actually knowing anything about time travel.
>>
>>217375685
You're failing to understand the Novikov self-consistency principle and seem to think time has some sort of consciousness. The Terminator going back in time always happened; there was no timeline in which it didn't, because there is only one self-consistent timeline. The Terminator never succeeded, because if it succeeded, then it wouldn't have had to have gone back in the first place. Time itself doesn't have a will and can't determine anything on it's own; what happens has already occurred.
Sarah isn't any more "safe" than anyone in the past who had near death experiences but didn't die. Do historic war stories have no stakes and are the surviving soldiers "safe" because the conclusion is predetermined?

>the very nature of time travel itself is paradoxical
Not with the Novikov self-consistency principle.
>and Skynet was taking a final desperate shot in the dark to save it's own existence, without actually knowing anything about time travel.
Yes, exactly, that's why they tried to alter the future despite being subject to the Novikov self-consistency principle. Their attempt to alter the future is always what led to the birth of John Connor and the rise of SkyNet.
>>
>>217375757
>Do historic war stories have no stakes and are the surviving soldiers "safe" because the conclusion is predetermined?
The conclusion in real life is not predetermined, we only know they were safe because we're looking backwards and see events played out. If you introduce time travel as a concept then you're locking in fate and determinism at which point time travel is irrelevant because nothing can be achieved, so there is no real threat to Sarah, she can never be harmed because she never was harmed. It also means she can never succeed at anything because she has no free will. Making the future alterable means that the character's choices actually matter and means something.

>You're failing to understand the Novikov self-consistency principle
I understand it, my issue is that it makes for a boring as fuck story. If you stick with the principle then T2 cannot happen. In any way, you can't even fall back on "well Judgement Day is inevitable, it just happens later" like T3 because that is STILL changing the future. Adding in T2 makes both films better, because Terminator is NOT about time travel Terminator is a story about love, hope and humanity. It is the rejection of machine-like thinking. Getting hung up on the mechanics of time travel means you're missing the point of the films.
>>
>>217375880
>The conclusion in real life is not predetermined, we only know they were safe because we're looking backwards and see events played out.
In a world without time travel, historic events are predetermined, ie they already occurred.
>It also means she can never succeed at anything because she has no free will.
Fate is caused by our free will. We still live in the moment and make our own decisions, but time being self-consistent means these decisions are what lead to our inevitable fate. Sarah still faced death, fought, survived, and saved humanity.
>Making the future alterable means that the character's choices actually matter and means something.
Making the future alterable means that at any point their struggles and lives could just be erased by someone going further back.

>It is the rejection of machine-like thinking.
Ironically enough, in the first film it's SkyNet that sees the future as alterable and John Connor that doesn't. John Connor only sends Kyle Reese back in time and blows up the time machine because he knows what will happen is predetermined. If he didn't, he would have sent a platoon of soldiers back to destroy CyberDyne.
There is hope in the first film, but hope for humanity after defeating the machines in the future. Not hope of preventing the future from happening.
>>
>>217375880
>>217376084
Also, let me break it down to the simplest terms possible;
If the future is predetermined, then our choices matter.
If the future is alterable, then none of our choices matter, since they can be changed at any point.

This bizarre casting choice doesn't get nearly as much shit as it deserves. No way they would let a Black ass chicago nigga be a Jedi. Do we know if the wind traders are completely nomadic? I think it's possible they have cities somewhere (perhaps in the mountains) that they fly out from. I don't think we saw children or elderly in those ships, just working age na'vi. And they probably need shipyards to build their blimps.

Setting up a base near one such city and establishing good relations with them would have been a big win for the RDA. They could give you guides, translators, lokal knowledge etc. As long as you're not too evil though, like blowing up soul trees. But of course corporations and colonial states would never sabotage themselves with cruelty and short-sighted greed like that ...
