I went to con and wanted to have Shatner sign something so I picked one of my favorites, Star Trek Rites. Surprisingly NOBODY had even heard of this game, nobody in line (even the boomers), not the item handler, not even Shatner himself remembered it, even though he did the VA for TWO of these games in 90s.I could've swore they were pretty popular in the 90s. Both Rites and 25th anniversary were successful enough for Interplay to commission full cast VA versions of each. Yet somehow they're forgotten now?
>>12486073I meant Capstone. Why am I so retarded?
>>12485239Very cool you got the shatman to sign that. I met him at a convention a couple years ago while he just roaming the floor, checking out booths. Hardly anyone recognized him, so it was pretty nice. Also, ty for creating a good thread on this board and hopefully killing a spam thread with it.>>12485428> A few years later Interplay re-released both games in CD form with all voice-overs by the original bridge cast, as well as some upgraded SFX and interstitial prerendered videos. Since you've never played either before you could start with the CD versions and get the benefit of hearing Shatner, Nimoy, Kelley etc read their lines out. Don't expect much, Shatner phones it in most of the time. Play 25th first since the engine is more primitive, then play Rites after. The voice acting, while it’s neat to have the original cast doing it, was pretty underwhelming imo. You’re right, they all kind of phone it in and inevitably sound incongruent because of age versus the youth of the characters they’re portraying. I originally played the floppy disk versions for Mac when I was a kid (the version where 25th’s last mission is almost completely trimmed) and found it very fun. JR as well, both excellent games, and it’s a shame this genre has all but died out. Highly recommend TNG: A Final Unity, too—it’s probably the pinnacle of Star Trek in this genre; all the modernized versions work fine afaik, but I remember the old dos version being somewhat buggy at a few points in the game.
>>12485683>>12486072There’s probably still a lot of interest in adventure pnc games. The common denominator among all the replayable, fun ones is they have really great stories merged with solid gameplay. Idk if today’s industry is capable of storytelling like that anymore without a million consultants being involved and screwing it up.
>>12485239I remember them being well reviewed in the magazines and obviously the first one did well enough to get a sequel, but it's possible they just didn't reach a mainstream audience. Point n clicks were a bit of a niche genre even in their hey day.
>>12485239>not even Shatner himself remembered itDude is like 100 years old and has been doing kirk for like for like 60 of them, I'm sure there are alot of things slipping through the cracks.
Who is the most important woman in game development history?
>>12469717I respect the talent but not the person
>>12485452>they were nearly dead when myst hitRetard
>>12485660Roberta Williams already said why the adventure game genre was dying, and it's really as simple as tastes changing in the market, mixed with the narrower audience for adventure games with their rising costs making them less commercially viable.Gamers wanted less puzzle solving, more action, less patience for narrative and character development. They also didn't really have any option for multiplayer, didn't lend themselves well to expansion packs, and were harder to summarize and market in quick or small ads. It's not some grand mystery or some deeply held secret.

Mario 3's music is kind of ass. I mean it does some cool technical things with pushing the NES's audio capabilities, but for such an iconic game, it's got to have one of the weaker main themes.
>>12485615Well described
>>12485610>Is it?Yes. Some of the most memorable music came from SM3 so you're just a contrarian faggot.
>>12485585The music is good, but it's one of the least replayable mario games of all. It's all about surprising the player with new things and tricks that skip large parts of the levels.
It's as good as all the other Kondo works, the dude is a master of simple, effective and memorable video game music.I remember basedfacing back when I first played Super Mario Galaxy on the wii and I got to the first hidden level that had that new version of the SMB3 2nd athletic theme, it's just iconic as any other Mario athletic themehttps://youtu.be/Z1NlmAXQPEM?si=ed9cHNwUFFcXdogB
>>12485585Deiniftely not ass. I think it's weaker than SMB1 and SMW, but still great. I love the tropical desert sound vibe it has.

Arcade design is represented and cherished in modern times, but it happens devoid of literacy and experience in where that comes from. You will see people coming up with all kinds of things, like nuzlocke runs, finding all kinds of ways to arbitrarily turn games into more skill-based experiences. All of that has its roots in arcade design and never really lost relevancy, but the moment you look at Rail Shooters, Nintendo had all the levity.Nintendo makes a really damn good railshooter that kicks the living shit out of either Panzer Dragoons, in terms of scoring, but the large majority of Nintendo fans, who started playing SF64 weren't and still aren't interested in its core design. It's why I call it astroturf.Zero never had a chance, neither does Star Fox as a whole. Shmups are back, the deadest of genres, and yet it's healthier than a Nintendo franchise. You could make the best F-Zero/Star Fox/Wave Race game ever, made in its predecessor's image. It would never be enough.Gamers don't have the kind of relationship with replay value that 90's Nintendo/AV made games in mind with.A lot needs to happen culturally to inspire people towards familiarizing themselves with, and even crave an experience rooted in, that context. (arcade design)"I want cheaper, shorter games, with worse graphics, more sustainable development and I'm not kidding."You can't do any of that when the majority of people come from that era of Nintendo fans, who were happy to see Star Fox turn into a Ubisoft Toys-To-Life AssCreed Tower game,or think the only way to save the series is "do what XYZ 3rd Party entry did but betterer and biggerer this time!".You gotta re-introduce missing context in design philosophy and appeal to the average Switch owner.

All of that has its roots in arcade design and never really lost relevancyYour post could've ended here and it'd be an amazing thread. I sincerely agree with what you said here and even some of what you said at the end, but you ruined it by bringing up Nintendo fans and StarFox. If you wanted to discuss how arcade style gaming hasn't died because people love to impose skill challenges on themselves then you failed because it reads like someone who played StarFox for the first time and is trying to act like a wine sommelier. If you wanted to discuss StarFox then you also failed because you deviated from the games and into the fandom. Disappointingly shit thread.

>>12484582>of course it will be more open since it was made when 2D games had been perfected meanwhile 3D games were still actively being improved when OoT came out.OK, but this is a completely fair criticism then. This explains it, it doesn't excuse it. Like, sorry this new Disneyland park on Mars doesn't have all the stuff the other parks do, but when we open Disneyland on the moon, it'll have more stuff. Like.. .uh cool, but Im on Mars, Im not on the moon.
ITT discuss games only you played or don't see discussed often that you'd recommend to others. Please explain what you like about a game and why you'd recommend it. Effortposting is highly encouraged!I'll start:Road Rash: Jailbreak (2000) was the final game in it's series before Electronic Arts decided to abandon the IP (barring the lousy GBA version from 2003).I'd argue that it's the best game in the series, however, nobody bought it. The combat is the best in the series and the game introduces the ability to taunt your opponents with funny quips. The gameplay is mostly standard Road Rash with races growing in distance the further along you get. It's also an open-world game, allowing you to take shortcuts during some races.IMO, it's criminally underrated, provides hours of arcade-style fun and is very replayable. Also, the soundtrack kicks ass. Play it!

>>12485539No it's just the only channel I saw which gave it a review that saw the game from my perspective

I always preferred consoles and would often just go for the console ports of everything, but recently with a few arcade titles without proper console ports getting my interest, and how Myrient's going down which made me download a ton of arcade titles in panic, I'm playing through some of them and it's been incredible.I'd say my main issue before, and why I preferred console ports, was the lives/continues, back then we'd play as long as we had quarters, but now? I have inifinte quarters in my emulator, so how do I make it more challenging? Do I have to 1CC all I play? It's part of the reason I never got into this sort of emulation before, but now it's solved... I've simply stopped caring about having the most challenge, I'm getting older and time is shorter every year, more stuff to do, less time to do all things I actually want to do, so not focusing on lives and 1CCs, and simply playing, putting on a quarter whenever I run out, it's comfortable and it's like fullfilling a childhood dream of mine too.I've got all the quarters I need, baby! No need to ask mom for more and hearing that it won't be happening. It's comfortable and I'm enjoying it. Anyways, how do you guys go about emulating arcade titles? Do you go for the 1CC every single time or do you add a limit to your quarters? How do you decide that limit? Or do you go infinite?
>>12486180Doesn't count if it's not on a Japanese cabinet.
To not get a 1cc is to just admit you don't like a game. I don't want to endlessly hear about games you don't really like or care about. Too much of that here already.
