Anybody freehand sharpen? I've been doing it for years starting with waterstones all the way down to tiny arkansas stones and india stone rods. My new thing is stones glued to sticks, once you get your technique down you don't need a flat surface and can just pull it out and start sharpening while you are walking even. I've started gluing stones to sticks using epoxy. I think if you buy a bag of discount knives and practice sharpening it shouldn't take too long. Honing a blade freehand is therapeutic in a way, like meditation.
