>Can you elaborate?
Take Syberis dragon marks for example: in the canon they have a bunch of at-will equivalent minor abilities alongside the big only-use-this-sometimes powers.
WotC has a habit of compulsively nerfing things that don't need it, and then buffing the wizard again.

I ran a high level campaign using the Forgotten Realms as an artificially high-magic low-IQ zone. Wizards in other worlds had to work for their magic so they knew all the rules and secrets, and martials had room to grow to high level in continent-spanning wars. In Faerun, casters were basically using apps coded by mommy Mystra, and Harpers keeping Faerun in a peaceful stasis capped local martials to about level 10. A FR mage would have 5 caster levels above anyone else but they couldn't apply it to anything beyond spamming fireball and wall of force.

IIRC the PCs eventually decided it was a divine politics conflict and teamed up with Bane to ruin things.

Do any clerics worship OC gods? My cleric worships a sleeping god and believes that all reality is his god's dream. He also believes that when his god wakes up all life will ascend to a higher plane of existence. It's basically Cthulhu without the tentacles.

>CHAPTER 9: DUNGEON MASTER'S WORKSHOP

In practice, does everyone ignore these? The only ones I've seen mentioned are Gritty Realism and Lingering Injuries. I'd assume all DMs create monsters and NPCs, but some of the suggestions for class changes seem pretty cool and potentially balance nightmares.
I have never DMd so it's my first time taking a loot at the DMG, and I don't think I've ever seen people using these alternate rules and suggestions
> proficiency dice instead of flat bonuses
> removing all skills from the game, using only ability checks
> hero points
> honor points
> horror charisma saving throws - >short-term or long-term form of madness
> alternate healing

Hmm.. in that case, invest in a low power UV laser and discolour all the paint on her models. That’ll teach her to be attracted to men other than (you).

In all seriousness, I don’t think I’d take issue with that army. Yes, it’s weird, but unless she spends the entire game talking about the “deep lore” for her army and why it’s like that, fuck it. I’d rather play fifty games against random well converted female marines than one of the hundreds of awful newfags who insist on using primaris bits or unconverted 40k marine armies because “ITS ONVIOUSLY SIEGE ERA YOU AUTIST!!?!??!” I’m actually one of our resident armour autists and I’ll say that it could be much worse.

Welcome to TODD! This thread is for OPEN discussion of TSR-era Dungeons & Dragons (OD&D, Basic D&D, and AD&D including 2e) and related games, such as retroclones and OSR-adjacent games (OSE, BFRPG, S&W, LotFP, DCC, C&C, etc.). Free discussion of house rules and modifications is encouraged. For the sake of clarity, B/X is the assumed default system for any conversation unless otherwise indicated (but please do feel free to indicate otherwise).

Lamentations of the Flame Princess's d6 Thief (technically "Specialist") skills might be something to look at, if you haven't already.*

If you'd rather use the percentile skills in B/X, you can eliminate the 10 point jumps you get starting at mid levels, replacing them with 5 point jumps, but keeping the existing high level scores, so that you're effectively bringing the low level ones up to meet them. That's great, because it keeps high level scores (which are fine) where they are, while boosting low level scores (which suck). So you get what you see in the pic here (the blue progressions are unchanged). Have I already talked about this recently? Because I feel like I have. Well, just ignore me if you've already heard it.

*I do have to say that I think they still start out too low. If we say that 6 of them are core to a character (since there are more options than in D&D) and ignore all the others, that means the average starting score is 1.67 (4 points to distribute to 6 scores that start at 1), which is still laughably bad. I like the idea of starting out with 8 points to allocate instead of 4, but capping the skills at no more than 3 points (max 4 at level 2, max 5 at level 4, max 6 at 6). And instead of gaining 2 skill points each time you level, you get 2 at even levels and 1 at odd ones. That has you breaking even with the RAW at level 9.

Corrected thief skill table (climb sheer surfaces wasn't blue).

Rifts has the best vampires. They're outright invulnerable to almost all types of damage, but take damage from mundane stuff like running water, meaning that squirt guns actually burn them like acid (holy water does double of course). So sure, you can hit them with a bucket prank or a super soaker and hurt them, sure. Then they rip you out of your power armor barehanded at super speed and tear your heart out in a single hit once they get to the meaty center of whatever defenses you were wearing, and they regenerate all the damage while they're killing you. Squirt gun vampires are such a meme that it's addressed in the vampires sourcebook by a famous in-setting vampire hunter has a whole Vietnam vet-tier speech in one of the books that is about how sure you can soak em and now you've just burned an angry vampire and the first thing he's going to do is kill you to make sure you don't do it again.

Great game!

Is it safe to say that RPG's would not exist without D&D and Gygax, and that it is the "purest" an RPG can ever be? Or do you think RPG's were an inevitability and it was just a matter time someone decided to officially publish their wargame/whatever homebrew and that D&D isn't the end-all be-all?
I've seen some OSR discussions that view any early deviation from old D&D's(ie Runequest and Chaosium's BRP system) as the first signs of the death of the medium and when they were starting to stop being "games". Granted OSR is D&D-centric, but this view is held for RPG's as a whole. And on the other hand, I hear people talk about how certain games were already starting to focus on smaller scale scenarios, like that one survival game whose hex map was used for early D&D, and that D&D just gave people the confidence to know there's a market for games like this and Gygax was just the first guy to do it.

>It wasn't until fans of it started playing D&D and wanted to see Glorantha as an RPG, and someone else at Chaosium already already making their own system inspired by D&D, did Runequest come about.
I read that Runequest was already in development by the time OD&D came out, so any inspiration would have come only after the fact.

>Its ultimate origins may lie in high fantasy literature, but as soon as game developers began incorporating it, they have made Fireball their own, adapting it to be a satisfying gameplay mechanic.
We must go deeper. Just like how alignments come from Three Hearts Three Lions, some Elric in the middle, and then spread everywhere through D&D.
>>
>>93253922
Interesting.
Another contender I see for very early RPG's with systems detached from D&D and maybe-probably-who-knows could've existed on its own in some form is Traveler, but I know less of those games

> I don't know where that idea comes from
Really, is just a historical fact. Aztecs were hightly religious society, and social order was considerd to be reflection of the supernatural order. Because of this most of crimes against culture, stability of the state or social order were punished by hightly ritualized death penalty. By dying for the crime life force (tonalli) of criminal was transfered from him to the party that was hurt, or just society in general, restoring the natural order of things.
Examples of stuff punishable by death:
Hitting parent, verbaly atacking parent, shaming or not obeying parent, any lack of discipline as a soldier, gay sex, adultery, prostitution, corruption, public drunkenness.
Special case is treason, because traitor would be killed, his house would be razed to the fundaments (and even they would be pulled from earth) and earth would be salted. On top of that his whole family would be enslaved, and next four generations born after the fact would be kept in slavery
>>

>Graduation test for spartan soldiers was to choose one of your own village and just murder the fuck out of everyone in it, for practice.
Not from your own village, and it was more complex than this, but you got the right idea.
It was called kripteia, and was organized purge of helots (90% of spartan state population, slaves) that happened every year. Young spartans would kill every hellot traveling between the villages they encountered, and any other helot they found to be suspicious. Purpose of this was to keep them from rebeling by acts of terror
