>create a system>it's good>but have a huge ego and expect the system to become popular through word of mouth>do 0 PR for the system>do Pikachu face when the system tanksLiterally the story of every new indie system in the last 20 years. What's wrong with people in this industry? Does this industry only attract retards or what? It seems that way because only DND has created an official online service, while the rest believe that Internet is something secondary in the 21st century.
>>97827818D&D did it even worse. They had Critical Role and Stranger Things and the Coof lockdowns make the whole world suddenly pay attention to D&D and what did they do? Released a gimmicky collection of faux-retro Stranger Things adventures nearly a decade after the first season premiered, long after their time to shine had ended, and just before the release of the worst season of the show.
>>97829337Your timeline is incredibly goofy, buddy. The original Stranger Things starter set came out in 2019, the second thing they put out in 2025. The real bag dropping occured with the whole OGL fiasco in 2023 and the incredibly stupid launch of 5.5. Releasing a set of adventures """""based on""""" the final season of an incredibly anticipated show that has a tangential connection to your brand actually makes sense. It wasn't until after the season came out that everyone hated it, after all.
>>97829598I thought there was another one, but only kept finding the hellfire club thing. Still, that's 3 years after the first season, and then 7 more after that, while they were actively releasing the new not-a-new-edition version of D&D, no less. Also forgot about Baldur's Gate 3, which was so massively successful that it made people who exclusively play 5e stop and think>wait, why the fuck is the RPG this vidya is based on such much fucking worse than the vidya? You'd expect them to do some brand synergy, right? Like a campaign setting guide for Faerun like they intended to do towards the launch of 5e? Or maybe a tabletop-ified version of the BG3 adventure with maps and NPC statblocks, and so on. Nope. They made some minis for their dead on arrival VTT service. And then did nothing as BG3 gobbled up all the awards and told everyone how much they hate working with Hasbro and WotC upper management.
>>97829958Yeah, d&d is basically a zombie brand, now, after the ogl shit everyone was either fired or quit. They also didn't do anything for the 50th anniversary, and their "2024" edition wasn't fully released until 2025.
>>97830473>They also didn't do anything for the 50th anniversaryI recall them doing WORSE than nothing by releasing a book about its history that shat on the franchise's origins for being racist in the literal first page.
Pendragon Thread! What's the deal with 6E?
>>97832880Alright, home.Pendragon is an RPG that's been around since the 80s. It was made by Greg Stafford and built on a similar system as Call of Cthulhu (they aren't the same same system, just super similar and homebrewing between the two isn't impossible, just kinda quirky to try and do).The game is built from the ground up to emulate the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Each game session is meant to emulate one year of a knight's life, with feats, adventuring, tournaments, wars, things like that. Since the game internally can run for decades, it also is built on generational play, so you will play one knight, they will have children, one of those children becomes a knight, and when your knight retires or dies, depending on how old the child is they become your new character (typically they need to be 21, but some knights can be knighted as young as 16 in super rare instances, talk with your GM about that). The game has a number of characteristics that define your character physically (strength, size, etc), and those characteristics adjust many of your skills (not all of them though, just most) but only your skills as they are at 14, after that you need to dole out skill points that represent your training as a squire up until you turn 21 and are knighted. Skills cover all knightly deeds, from sword skill and riding horses all the way to recognizing heraldry/individuals and more. The game also has Passions and Traits. Passions are things like one's loyalty to their liege lord, love of their family, and any hatreds they have towards various individuals/families/tribes/nations/etc. Traits are built around one's faith and are always paired as a virtue/sin sort of combo (Chaste/Lustful, Generous/Greedy, etc). The total for each of ones paired traits is 20 (so 15 Valorous/5 Cowardly).
>>97833087All Skills, Passions, and Traits have a soft cap of 20 and increasing them above that expands the crit chance. Now, this is a roll-under system, so you want to roll below your score but you also want to roll as close to your score as possible (especially in opposed tests such as jousting or combat in general as the one closest to their score "wins") and rolling your score exactly is a crit. So if you have a score of, say, 24 then you crit on all 20s as well as all 19s, 18s, 17s, and 16s.In order to increase one's passions, traits or skills, you have to use them generally (there is a chance to increase them through training and the end-of-year winter phase as well). If they are used, you checkmark them and at the end of session you roll and if you roll higher (or roll a 20 if it's already capped) it increases by 1.Lastly, the game is best known perhaps for the Great Pendragon Campaign, a campaign encompassing like 80 or so years of play from 485 to 566, meaning you'll go through a good few knights in the meantime. King Arthur, by the way, becomes known in 510 I think? It might be 515 or any point between those two, I don't have the book right in front of me atm. But yeah, the game is expansive.Magic is also rare and more of a mystical sort, not "magic missile" and "fireball" but shit like "WE CALL ON THE SAINTS TO HEAL THIS KNIGHT" or "the druid calls down a fog to hide your knights from the giants sights."
>>97833107Sorry, had to step away for a moment.Alright, last thing to comment on - "Your Pendragon Will Vary" is a mantra that's been around since I think all the way back in 1st edition in the 80s. Basically Stafford knew players would end up veering stories off in 30 different directions all the time and what style game players would want from the game would vary from group to group. One group might want knights in shining armor on heavy chargers fulfilling quests from faerie kings and queens, another group would want mudcore "chainmail is the only proper armor and kite shields the only proper shield, and no magic or actual miracles" realism. So while the game is, canonically, more in line with, say, the movie Excalibur or even Disney's "The Sword in the Stone" movie (based on a book if I remember rightly), it does give guidelines on how to adapt the game to fit whatever the group overall wants from it.A famous story that was confirmed by Stafford was a female friend of his being asked to play the game with him back in the 90s and she wasn't super interested in it, preferring to play other systems at the time, but finally told him "if I can play a jewish lesbian knight then I'll play" thinking he would scoff and stop asking but he instead said he would have everything ready for her on game day on how to incorporate that sort of knight into the game. Why? Because the Arthurian Legend is one that constantly changes and adapts to fit the times people live in and the stories they want to tell. Hell, the idea of a female knight in an Arthurian-style setting even predated that 90s conversation by centuries, going all the way back to the 1200s with "Le Roman de Silence" about a girl raised as boy who even gets to be a knight and who has to struggle with her identity and the various social norms of her day, settling on using a masculine name, clothing, and presentation through like 98% of the story.
>>97833222>>97833107>>97833087Good show, chap.

Recently I found some Humanity Fuck Yeah YouTube videos that use AI voice narration on my feed. After using them as background noise while cleaning my apartment I found that that most of them are more or less the same. >>97834230>>97834231>>97834236For most of human history there was an understanding that it was better to die for a just cause than it is to live in obedience to an unjust one. Avatar is meant to be one of those stories... kind of like that movie about the American Indians that's oddly similar to Avatar. I think the existential angle they added about human extinction undermines the narrative because you have people hyper fixating on that one specific aspect of the worldbuilding and flattening their engagement with the rest of the story. We are also only told that humanity needs the resources on Pandora by the company invested in harvesting those resources. Apply your critical thinking faculties to that.

>>97832365The Nemerii were a pastoral herding culture that occupied the central plains and forests south of the great desert, they are the most practical and grounded of their dark elven brethren. To the main adherents of their people a life not in the saddle on the backs of their Thurael birds is a life not worth living, this naturally puts them at odds with their more civilised neighbours and the settled and coastal Nemerii that are much more influenced by the Lacusii's Tollure(empire) and the theocratic Ignarii states. They are prized as messengers and guides through the continental interior, their skill at riding is largely unmatched until the arrival of the humans during their long decline. Even before the arrival of the humans they were a declining culture due to constant warfare with the Malorii tribes that plagued the continent. The plains Nemerii are largely extinct as a culture in the present day and the settled and coastal Nemerii are much more assimilated into the surrounding Lacusii and Ignarii. They would also influence the Oskun human peoples and heavily imprint the Tirnaeth with their language and culture. Their unique breeds of thurael riding birds are still the most prestigious today, fast and versatile but not strong enough to stand up to horse cavalry.

Is union arena fun to play? I like the idea of pitting anime vs anime like a shonen arena fighter, and somebody at the shop told me Evangelion was a pretty good set so I was thinking about giving it a shot.
I never realized how many players suffer from aphantasia and insist on using miniatures. Are you one of them, or do you embrace the unmatchable graphics of theater of the mind?
>we just need them to keep track of positioning!yeah, right. it always starts with just a few unpainted minis and a basic dry erase mat for "spatial awareness", and the next thing you know, the roleplay is completely dead, the story has ground to a halt, and you're spending three hours playing some tactical measure-your-fucking-cone silliness.miniatures are just a gateway drug to full-blown grid-shittery. play theater of the mind or go play wh40k.
>>97833410Document how theater of the mind players actually play. Take notes or record the session. And then read/listen back to it when you're not in the moment.
>>97833414Every single edition of D&D is correctly played on a grid. This isn't because of superiority of theater of the mind. This is because of the specifics of the D&D rules set, which is built around grid-based movement.
