The choice is to either get boxes or get peoples' sloppy seconds, yeah. If you get a box then you sell what you don't need to recoup any losses from pack opening. Easier to do if you have friends to split the cost with.

Even then, it's better to wait a little bit after Day 1 in most cases if you're not interested in the B/S/T aspect. Prices will normalize unless you're trying to get a format-warping blowout card (but even then, the hype dies down after a few days).

Singles is the way to go, unless the set is particularly valuable. The rarity products for example always break even since they're full of staples, but a dud set like DUAD or DOOD is a bad choice unless you get it for cheap, and even then you're not guaranteed to pull the stuff you want.

When everything falls apart, they'll just do the same to the next guys who come along. That's the real terror. I imagine they might care about existential threats like nukes, but that's also assuming someone from 1000 AD does comprehend nukes. Unfortunately, you can't blame vampires for every politician you don't like.

I've never actually met a proper vampire. From what I understand they go where the food is and I live in a very low population density kind of place. From what my guy tells me though, they are typically rather human. They're people with a curse, not demons riding corpses. Don't get me wrong they're still going around biting necks and doing a whole lot of other bad stuff but most keep a low profile. The ones that typically wind up on a hunter's radar are the stupid and the especially nasty ones. As for manageable? I guess that depends on your definition. Vampires aren't that high on the "oh shit there's a dozen people dead" scale but they are a parasite that's nearly impossible to dislodge, assuming my pal isn't full of shit.

The Tomb of Horrors is a big piece of what helped inspire the whole "Nega-Dungeon" concept, where everything is just an unfun shitshow that punishes players for assuming that every dungeon they enter has to be worth the sacrifices made to conquer it, if it can even be conquered at all. While the ToH isn't quite that bad itself, there's a good amount that has plenty of players wanting to just abandon the dungeon early, despite several layers of precautions to ensure they can't.

I've got pulpshit fatigue. Fantasy comic bookiness and pulp are beyond tiresome to me. Ugly as shit art, retarded as shit plots, dumbass pulp tropes like one dude solos an army of 50000 and makes a Marvel quip. Always some dumbfuck scifi or lovecraftian content thrown in too. I want grit, realism, and down to earth plots. I want characters who act like real people, not capeshit actors. I want a plot with substance, not mindless style.

You've never actually read any real pulp (i.e. magazine stories from the 20s and 30s), have you? The average pulp story was something like a guy who got trapped in the wilderness and had to fight a badger, or a drunken sailor getting into a dubious underground boxing match. Even the fantastic stories often had relatively gritty plots and competent but plausible characters. Doc Savage and Tarzan were absurdly powerful, but they weren't the norm.

Actually, there's a game to simulate Danganronpa and other types of death games. Look up Despair Dilemma. I've been following it since the development phase, having even volunteered during open testing to try it and give the devs feedback.

Instead of "everyone plays one character," because that would be insane, everybody makes a few characters that can be manipulated by each player. Each player also embodies a type of story element or plotline that you see in things like this, with goals like accomplishing certain types of plot twists, breaking characters, etc. You can find the game on itch.io, where there's a demo kit you can peruse.

It's not a Danganronpa 1:1, but it'll give you a lot of the same vibes, with the story even being broken up into chapters, and the character concepts being built on loose archetypes.

Pretty much, i'm looking for an RPG based around the idea that the base character NEVER gets any stronger, any better, nothing along those lines. No level ups, no no nothing. The main character has the exact same stats throughout the entire game, maybe getting better equipment, but no extra abilities.

BUT:, like Ben 10, the idea is that the character can unlock (Maybe via buying using XP or being gifted by the GM or something like that) new forms that they can turn into.

Something like Ben 10 with the alien forms that grant superpowers, or Animorphs with the different animals, or Digimon with the Digivolutions. Stuff like that.

Are there any systems along these lines that exist?

You could potentially do this in Savage Worlds with the Superpowers Companion (which is actually really good for everything, my friend used it to run Megaman, I've used it to run Star Wars and Magical Girls). Let's say you start with 30 power points. You can get these set into arrays, for example you spend 24 points on the first array and can get 3 more arrays (each 2 points). So one could be your big strong guy form, another could have ranged attacks, another could be a computer hacking virus. Savage World's most fun system is the drawbacks where players cripple themselves for more skills and abilities. I think they're supposed to apply to your base form but you could have them apply to the arrays instead (for example the big guy is so ugly that people might attack you on sight for being a monster, the ranged guy could have crippling weaknesses to an element). The powers can also have drawbacks that let you stretch points further.

Savage Worlds leveling is interesting. If I remember correctly you get 1-3 Exp after a session based on how successful you were. These are used to buy skills, abilities, etc and every time you gain 20 (even if you spent them) you rank up (novice>seasoned>veteran, etc). With every new rank you could buy New Power which gives 5 new points, which would be two new arrays.

The gear part might be the one weakness to the plan. Savage Worlds gear is decent but Super Powers power level kind of blows it the fuck out. But there is a power called Devices which are supposed to be gadgets, so you could use excess points to buy those.

tl;dr Savage Worlds Superhero Companion. You start with set skills and a power cap. Gameplay just gives you more ways to use your power cap in different forms.

Call of Cthulhu should be the default roleplaying game. The percentage chance of success is incredibly intuitive. The setting is easy enough to grasp, while avoiding a lot of the issues of modern settings (just use your smart-phone to call the authorities) as well as those of high fantasy (the amount of background material). It's great for one-shots, which should be common in newbie games. The source material is available in loads of formats and is pretty great, but if you don't want to get into it, that's no hinderance to playing the game. Lovecraft's racism is a good retard filter. Sandy Petersen is a surprisingly cool dude. The monsters are scary enough that you're encouraged to get creative rather than just charging in.
Other good options:
Alien the RPG - good for one-shots, fairly accessible (watch one or two movies, or just be told 'it's the 1980s in space'), some nice mechanics (although also some clunky ones), reasonably intuitive and rules-lite. Tales from the Loop is also neat and uses a similar system.
In a Wicked Age - very pretentious, but teaches good habits about roleplaying, improvising, and collaborative world-building.
WFRP 2e - Sadly not easily available, but one of the best ways of transitioning wargamers to roleplaying. Subsequent versions have been a down-grade.
Open D6 - one of the more accessible generic systems.
GURPS - you are going to end up there eventually. Might as well just jump in the deep end.

I've only played square base games digitally, could someone provide some guidance on rank and flank stuff?
I am not sure what base sizes to use for 6mm scale. I have been looking at playing LOTR Warmaster and maybe some other games.
I am sure it varies by game but I only play solo so it's no biggie if my armies are scaled or based wrong, I just want to get off on the right foot.
Also not sure how to base other unit types.

This sector really feels like the Imperium overextended itself and now we're starting to see a very real decline of Imperial civilization in the sector. In old school Rogue Trader it was implied that the Imperium was just another phase in human civilization and now we're starting to see it vindicated. That's apart of what gives this sector an identity, and the oddball planets are the best part.
