After playing both the original Shandalar and the 2016 update version I've come to the conclusion that magic was just more fun in 1995 when it was more loose and relaxed. The kinds of decks you go up against in the 2016 version are so much more ruthless about shutting down every play you make that the only way to compete is to be an even more obnoxious dickhead and make sure they never get a chance to do anything. Every victory was bitter and spiteful in a way that I never felt with the older simpler Magic cards.

it doesn't need to be an LLM, it could literally be a script with somebody following it to clean up unusual/trouble cards.
lots of smaller CCGs have sims with full automation that are literally just community projects hand coded and maintained by one or two volunteers. mtg has an order of magnitude more cards in eternal than any of them, but with wotc's resources that's not an impossible task.
>>
>>97391365
This. We have dozens of one-drops that would have costed 3 mana in 1994.
>>
>>97391721
none of those things are actually in shandalar 96 you realize
>>
>>97391365
>>97393552
Power creep is definitely real, but you can prove to yourself that it's not the most relevant factor very simply. Take any of those overpowered/undercosted one-drops and just throw him in a deck with a heap of commons and uncommons, like a ten year old would if he had to build a deck out of the ten boosters he'd opened in his life. It won't be a very powerful deck. You can do the same with Force of Will or Black Lotus, however powerful a card is, Magic is a game about decks not cards.
>>
>>97393522
well yeah, it doesn't have to, which is why I said it'd be funny, not smart. Maybe a little interesting, but certainly not the ideal solution. You wouldn't need JoTC, just a small handful of autists who can recognize what components make up most non-keyword effects and one turbo autist to make something that parses oracle texts into chains of these components. And of course, the engine and ui to work with these parsed oracle texts.

Wow, that's terrible writing. Dan Abnett should have stuck to comics.
>>
>>97397252
Abnett was telling you that the Emperor's a fraud and a monster since Horus Rising, you just didn't want to see it. The foreign God-Emperor that Horus kills is literally no different from the Emperor of Mankind, he just didn't get to the 'conquering the stars' phase of his master plan to reunite humanity first. Both were convinced they were right and everyone else is wrong, both are hopelessly deluded
>The difference is, I know I'm right

Nigger I don't give a fuck about your horus heresy lore I just think the writing excerpt you posted sucks ass.
>>

>Now that he lost all credit for his scientific accomplishments
What are you talking about? He was discreetly giving the information to others so they would think they had discovered it themselves.
He created the Custodes, but couldn't he have created the Astartes on his own? Come on, anon, don't be silly.
Do you know why the Emperor had a copy of the entire Adeptus Astartes project before Astartes decided to erase everything? Because the Emperor had the original files, and she only had the copies.

How do you feel about the lore changes with SF2e?
I haven't looked into it aside from accidentally learning that Zon-Kuthon and Shelyn did a gattai and became Zon-Shelyn, but you probably have a better idea about what's changed.

I think I'd be fine with them if they weren't written by cringe people. It's mostly the same setting, the triune and stuff related to it seems like an attempt to flesh out hyperspace and the internet a bit more, which I like the idea of I just hate how much of their perception of the internet has been shaped by modern twitter.
>>
well, the entire modern internet basically comes down to what happens on twitter anyway, so get it twisted. the premier superpower on the planet is run by a twitter shitposter president, with a handpicked twitter shitposter government. bluecheck accounts on twitter with hitler statue profile pictures literally decide which countries get bombed and which don't. get it twisted.
>>
I've got a Thaumaturge, Mirror/Regalia, about to hit level 6 and get Scroll Esoterica. What are some of the best spells to get? Mostly utility stuff, I'd imagine, though some debuffs or cc can't be too clunky, especially with Retrieval Prisms from Talisman Esoterica.
>>
>>97396724
> It isn't the class to be Han Solo anymore, it's the class to be John Halo.
That's an odd comparison that I don't quite get. Admittedly my knowledge of 1e Operative is limited, but generally when you are split down the path of "the dude that's really good with (single-shot) guns" and "Space Rogue", but you can't do Space Rogue again, there not quite much you could do other than go hard to the left. There is also the fact that Skillmonkeys in 2e don't need to put so much expertise in the class themselves thanks to Skill Feats, so they don't need to print skill-based specializations. I think Operative is more faithful to the 1e idea than you give it credit, at least in terms of how 2e is expected to play.

Solarian I lowkey agree with you though. It very much suffers from page space crunch and "Well SOMEONE has to be melee!!" when it just didn't.

>>
The instant Primaris released I knew GW would happily throw anything they owned into the trash can, so I haven't given them a dime since 8th.
>>
I stopped when 5th dropped and they took away half the options that I had modelled and scratchbuilt into my armies. Still happilly playing 3rd to 4th edition to this day with not a penny gone to those 'Forced Obsolecence' wankers since. They can change the lore how much they want in ever feeble attempts to boost sales, but it will no effect on me or my gaming friends. Stop stressing about what GW is promoting this week, just do your own thing, you don't need to constantly jump onto whatever bandwagon GW is shitting out from moment to moment.
>>
Anyone buying GW products after ‘Legends’ and Primaris forcing re-buys or making paid-for models instantly obsolete is an idiot.
There are much better games out there that are designed around fun and actually good mechanics, not the overly complex yet shallow, half-tested mess that is 40K.

How do players in your groups, including yourselves if you play rather than GM, react to authority figures in your games? Are they happy to play along and do what they're told, or do you find that they try to rebel against whoever's in charge of them at any opportunity?

>Traditional Games?
This is a thread about how players react to authority figures in tabletop roleplaying games, a type of traditional game.
>You first.
When STing Vampire the Masquerade for my group (last session was about a month ago, we went on hiatus for Christmas) I find that they really chafe whenever the Prince demands anything of them and they are almost more interested in dismantling the local Camarilla so that they no longer need to follow orders than they are in the jobs that the Prince gives them.
>What system?
In my case, the system is Vampire the Masquerade 20th Anniversary, but the question is system neutral.
>What setting?
In my case, the setting is the World of Darkness, but the question is setting neutral.
>Post this in a general.
This is a generic topic without any focus on any specific system or setting that has a general, therefore I do not think that there is an appropriate general for this thread.

>Are they happy to play along and do what they're told, or do you find that they try to rebel against whoever's in charge of them at any opportunity?
My current game's (D&D 3.5) PCs set out from the starting encounter with a desire to liberate a nearby monster-occupied city so they ended up as official agents of a local authority figure fairly early on. They've never particularly had reasons to dispute with him because he's a paladin that is earnest about the desire to make the region more safe for the humans of the nation.

They did get back at a corrupt guard captain of a city in a different nation by beating the tar out of him at a tavern, picking his pockets of the exact change he had confiscated as a 'tax' to get back through the gate, before immediately setting sail out of there the same night.
>>
>>97397101
Do you see them breaking away from the paladin when they accumulate more authority, or do you think that they'll be loyal to him even after they achieve the goal of liberating this city? It's easy to remain loyal to someone in an us versus them situation like that, but considering how they treated this corrupt city guard, I imagine that they'll end up seeing the paladin as competition once they get enough power for themselves.
>>
>>97397477
>It's easy to remain loyal to someone in an us versus them situation like that, but considering how they treated this corrupt city guard, I imagine that they'll end up seeing the paladin as competition once they get enough power for themselves.
Your logic doesn't follow. They beat up the corrupt guard for extorting them, nothing the paladin has done or would do following the liberation would constitute that
>>
>>97397511
They beat up the corrupt guard for exerting authority over them, so my worry was that if the paladin does try to pass judgement on them or exert authority instead of just providing guidance, they might want him gone next.
>>
I typically am miffed by obviously higher powered companions traveling with the party. Especially if they are useless to "compensate".
>Here is this dude who has 4 levels on everyone
>He will stand in the back and "support"
For authority figures who are frail or just stick to their throne, I typically get along rather well. But of course rudeness sours me on an npc. I don't need them to worship me. But why would I respect a douche bag?
I get it when an npc thinks they are hot shit but when that is their defining feature it gets tiresome.

While I'm definitely positive he would agree with your sentiment, and I'd add that he was protecting Blue Fairy - that is, an attractive lady to the assessment, I belong to the "there really isn't a superior way to die, it's better not to die" school of thought.

Mortals also have cognitive issues, disabilities and other illnesses waiting for them as they age. Meanwhile us kindred don't age, or I should say, it's not like our Elders can't become decrepit - just look at Europe - but at least it takes centuries. far longer than kine can live.
>Anyone going out feels like it's before their time, y'know?
Yes, all the more so when they are full of energy and youthful vigour like Boy Toy was. I did call him a manchild, but really 'Peter Pan' would be a more dignified epithet.

I found with Wolves and Ghost Bear the balance was a little better and you could stay in heavies and experiment a bit, the Smoke Jaguar campaign has this annoying as fuck habit of going “oh you thought you were at the end of the level, 2/5 of your star is wiped out and everyone else has critical damage? Fuck you here’s an assault lance, and btw no checkpoints” Then you’re eventually forced into pulse laser spam dire wolves
>>
>>97397443
Jaguar campaign was overly stingy with repair bays which I feel is the biggest contrast with the DLC. The Bears also not letting you buy infinite copies of Novas/Timber Wolves/Dire Wolves and forcing you to swap mechs around more often was also a smart move.
