I always hear about the stir this caused, and recently about how bad or redeemable it is. I'm not certain about it myself because I dabbled with 3e and then got into 5e, never paid much attention to the scene during that entire era. What does /tg/ think of the system?

I'm pretty sure most of the hype around The Thing came from the players, and the hate for The Different Thing came from them looking at it. Lots of 2e players just went on to play 3e without too much problem, and even on to other d20 games.

And lots of 3.5 groups played 4e without much problem. My real life group was one of them. Unless you have some numbers to back up the claim, anecdotes don't mean much here.

Really did not think this deck had it in it to trophy but trophy it did. God I really like playing cube. Obvious good cards are frog and bowmasters (with time spiral and twister) You can dump your hand on frog or just deal 7 with bowmasters making an 8/8 is pretty good. LSV sez he doesn't like dauthi voidwalker but its awesome when you can steal the opponents best card with thoughtseize. Im really bullish on subtlety desu. Seeing a lot more fair decks but my rank is withered and im in plat whatever so i dont know.

The amount of people who genuinely enjoy this kind of play is scarce and the amount who would prefer it to more regular adventuring or other character focused stories even scarcer. And half of them would probably rather play a wargame, board game or a vidya grand strategy anyway

That being said, plenty of modern games do introduce some form of mechanics for grander scale play, but usually they are simplified and somewhat handwave'y

Deities haven't come up in my game yet, but I do wonder who a nothic in Phandelver would have worshipped. I had a player say something that made the nothic go "Jesus Christ", but I caught myself and said "Pellor" only because that was the first god in the pantheon I could think of.

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>How do I get started?

Crabbo is done giving the Stabbo
Crabbo is now giving the Blammo for all the man things infringing on his territory

I have found most systems for armor and defense unsatisfying.
I find pure damage negation doesn't represent that armor doesn't just reflect but also reduces a lot of damage too, a hammer to the helmet won't just plink off its going to have some significant concussive effect, if less than against an unhelmeted head. But on the other end, armor as pure static damage reduction often doesn't illustrate the other end, that many attacks SHOULD simply be negated, a knife thrown at a breastplate won't just deal less damage, it will ping off harmlessly.

And Barbarians of Lemuria, Specifically the Mythic version, I believe addresses both those concerns for me.

This is done by a. health and damage being kept rather conservative and relatively equal, not becoming exponential as levels go up and b. armor being a die you roll for damage reduction rather than a static number. The range of damage that armor protects just so happens to align with the damage most weapons can do. damage being 1-6 + strength and armor protecting 0-5 damage. meaning that a low roll on most attacks and a high roll on most armor saves will have the armor totally negate attacks, while a high attack roll and a low armor roll will totally bypass armor, and a medium attack roll and a medium armor roll will deal reduced damage.

This is all modified by the fact that 2 handed weapons you roll 2d6 and pick the highest damage, medium weapons you roll straight 1d6 and light weapons you roll 2d6 pick the lowest. And armor ranged from light reducing d6-3 damage (0-3 damage), medium reducing d6-2 damage (0-4 damage), and heavy reducing d6-1 damage (0-5 damage). This means a dagger has the potential to deal as much damage as a great axe if situation permits (like dagger to the eye slit), but is less likely too, and that light armor could fully protect you from a glancing blow like heavy armor, but is also less likely too.

In Crimson Exodus/Fantasy Dice there are no damage numbers (or HP) at all, every weapon has a wound level that ranges from a bleeding wound to instant incapacitation or death. The wound rating can be improved based on attacker's skill (and defender's toughness may mitigate it a little bit), but small melee weapon will never do any damage to a body part protected by a good armor.

My Own

For each attack dice rolled:

1 to 3: miss
4 to 5: hit, 1 damage
6: hit for critical damage (normally around 2-4)

Normal armor reduces total damage by 1
Mithril plates reduce total damage by 2
If you are using a shield, you can roll 1d6, avoiding any attack on a 6
>>
>>97840783
also, attacks normally are done by rolling 2d6, with high level fighters getting 3 and even 4
>>
>>97817261
Palladium is pretty decent at addressing your concerns. There's a to-hit number. If you make it, you hit. If the target has armor, you deal damage to the armor's hit points. However, if your to-hit is high enough, you bypass the armor and deal damage to the person. And when it comes to MDC armor specifically, the attack that destroys the MDC armor does not carry through. So if your MDC armor has 1hp left, and you get attacked for 100 damage, the armor takes the last hit and breaks. The remaining 99 damage doesn't transfer to the person--that armor still takes that last hit that destroys it.

As implemented in RIFTs, it's a pretty decent system for trying to handle everything from a knife fight to nuclear bombardment. It's not perfect, but it's very easy and it adds a layer of crunch that creates tension instead of just more crunch. It has an action economy that allows for planning, while still keeping the rules straightforward (notwithstanding the fact that the books are laid out so poorly that you have to crossreference your way through 300 pages to figure out what the rules are in the first place).
>>
>>97835363
DT/DR is something that works much better in video games, where the computer handles all the calculation for you
armor with 23% damage reduction against an attack with 37 damage, good luck doing that on pen and paper in 5 seconds

and combat was heavily gated behind gear progression, fights were stomps if there was a mismatch in outfits thanks to threshold
FNV had to rework threshold to cap at 80% max reduction so that you wouldnt hit rapiz zeros on targets, and late game weapons would have flat DT pen because you were expected to go up against power armor by the time you got it
so the assault carbine would tear through 90% of human enemies because it was balanced around its integral -10DT

Rules are more starightforward than 40k, scale is smaller and more engaging.

Honestly I'd buy a single starter set, unless you both want both armies.

If you're new to tabletop mini games, consider you're going to devote time to assembling and painting. A common pitfall is overpurchasing and then staring down a huge pile of grey. Honestly, get the stuff for the faction you like the feel of, and then slowly add and watch your doods grow. There will be more releases in future too.

If you're gonna play protoss, do get the Founder's Ed and the limited ed Zeratul.
>>
>>97840193
Even if we're wholly limited to what's in the games, that's still a massive roster considering how much co-op expands things.
Lurkers are also almost guaranteed, they were even added back in to SC2 in Post-LOTV. Could easily put them in a wave alongside Liberators and Reavers as a heavy support wave.
>>
>>97840736
Meh, I don't like Toss in the PC game, and the Zealots look awful in the board game too. Besides, the deal for Protoss pack isn't even that great—I'm saving about 10%, when set with Terran and Zerg is like 50% less.
>>
>>97840780
Yeah, Jacek said they had like 9 years worth of releases.

We'll probably see Dominion Troopers when Mengsk releases, for example.

The thing is, there are a lot of eligible Terrans to become Heroes in the Lore. There are fewer Protoss, but still quite a few. The Zerg have the fewest number of eligible characters.
I guess they could draw on the many queens named in the HotS campaign. Infested Duran and Infested Stukov would also be cool for a change of speed. Dehaka is absolutely essential for some Primal shenanigans.
>>
>>97840812

It does look so corny. Like early 10's Tumblr art and not something you'd see from an actual game company.

I guess if I were in charge of DnD I'd try to split the brand. One line that's traditional dungeon-crawling and the like. And the other one more aimed at people who play on Discord and want a cozy fantasy about being quirky tieflings running their own tavern or whatever.

I feel I'm going insane, maybe someone here can help a fella out or prove it. Basphomy in Verdigris, as we all know, was supposed to be a 3e Iconic Infernal. However, I SWEAR that way back in 2e the name was also given as a John Doe-style stand in for whenever the devs would playtest Infernal combat builds. I vividly remembering something about testing her using GSNF against a Solar, and the decisive factor being how many bystanders there were.

Does anyone remember where the 2e devs talking about her in that context can be found? I could've sworn it was forum.rpg but I can't find anything there. Please don't let it be the nuked White Wolf forums.

>>97840767
My takeaway from Crucible of Legends is that in 3e, a Wyld Hunt is literally the premise of a Kamen Rider show: You and bunch of other random assholes discover you all have elemental powers, which clearly means you're destined to be best friends and defeat ALL of the golden demons out there. It's not a military institution, it's an adventuring party.

Behold, the start of a Wyld Hunt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7bKW9SlTrY

NTA but they're also called roller pumps; he's right in that it'd probably work regardless of fluid viscocity because it isn't just relying on the initial suction force to start the flow but continually provides motion to the line that forces flow of liquid. A hand powered one would suck though, you can get cheap roller/peristaltic pumps that are powered by electricity instead.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:
