Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:>n00b DM's Guidehttps://pastebin.com/EVvt6P0B>n00b Player's Handbookhttps://pastebin.com/XALkXkV0>Troves, Resources, Blogs, etc:http://pastebin.com/9fzM6128Comment too long. Welcome to /2eg/, a thread dedicated to all things 2nd Edition D&D related - including settings, lore, modules, and derived systems (Alternity, Buck Rogers XXVc, For Gold and Glory, Hackmaster, Myth and Magic, and more).Since 2e draws heavily from earlier editions, older modules are welcome too. Other media derived from AD&D (such as Infinity Engine video games) also has a home here. It's what you play, not how you play it. RAW or homebrew, as long as your table is having fun, there's no wrong way to play. There's a surprisingly complete 2e fan wiki for rules stuff, it's excellent for quick reference:https://adnd2e.fandom.com/wiki/Advanced_Dungeons_%26_Dragons_2nd_Edition_Wikiad&d 2e archiveaHR0cHM6Ly93ZWIuYXJjaGl2ZS5vcmcvd2ViLzIwMjUwMjA0MTczNzUwL2h0dHBzOi8vdGhlLWV5ZS5ldS9wdWJsaWMvQm9va3MvcnBnLnJlbS51ei9EdW5nZW9ucyUyMCYlMjBEcmFnb25zL0FEJkQlMjAybmQlMjBFZGl0aW9uLw==Remember to keep things civil.Previous thread: >>97806516Comment too long. >>97839767Or look up Purple Worm.
Been thinking a lot about this>So the warp, as the realm of souls, originally was a creation of the old ones as a weapon against the necrontyr in the war of heaven. It allowed not only a means for the Aeldari and Krorks to use psychic powers, but also cheat death and allow them to respawn infinitely. >But after the war in heaven the warp is destabilized due to the negative emotions, death, and general usage. There's no more old ones to fix it either.>Now the "warp" sends those same negative emotions at the Aeldari who in turn start going crazy. They start doing their murder orgies, but it's not really fair to blame them as they are influenced by the warp. The same thing is known to happen to human psykers as well. The warp make psykers, especially untrained ones, crazy and emotional. In long terms it uses them to gain more power and access to realspace. REMEMBER THIS.>This creates a feedback loop where the the negative emotions make the mortals crazy and in turn have the negative emotions to fuel the warp. Ultimately resulting in slaanesh. khorne nurgle and tzeentch are likely started in the war in heaven, but finished during humanity's early era when human psykers start showing up.Con

>>97839163Dehaka seems like an obvious choice for a character to release alongside a wave of Primal Zerg in a few years.
>>97839163I hope we get a "small" Dehaka and a giant Dehaka to represent his multiplayer abilities lol
>>97839579Also worth mentioning is that the wargame points convention means we could START with big-Dehaka by trading out small units pre-emptively, as well as the rest of the "sack to grow" Primal mechanics. I'd still like to keep those around even if they're horrible to balance due to resulting list versatility gains (and the same goes for Archon merger), but the option to just have the Big Fat Pain Train roaring turn one is nice....Come to think of it, you could end up seeing merger cases where you save points compared to bringing the bigger unit directly "payed for" with the activation economy and positioning loss, or conversely see a points commitment to open the option so the ability isn't weighing down the units' viability without intent to merge.

>>97822221>What character do you most want to get a model?I wanna see a Niadra that actively uses SOMETHING of Protoss stuff. I do not care for the book that just leaves her "Chief Protoss Hater Because Mommy Didn't Say Stop". The most off-the-wall would be a comedy of errors with an Essence Translator and trying to brainworm the last holdouts into Zerg-loyal Archons resulting in "hybrid" that comprehensively tell the Amon plot to fuck off no matter how it tries to catch up to them.

Would Subordinate Inspiration Technique bridge language gaps (any edition)? I'd think it would if it's bringing ideas into people's heads, but if it's making them visualise words playing in their head then I wouldn't think it did, so I guess I'm wondering how you would adjudicate. And, if it doesn't translate, what the heck does thinking thoughts in languages you don't understand feel like?
>>97838738>The developers declaring that core was perfect in every wayI don't think they said that.>and did not require errataMy understanding is that the developers said they are not allowed to errata core. They aren't in charge, they can't just do what they want if they want what they write to go to print.
>>97839394I call bullshit on that, especially when these are the same writers who later complained about arbitrary wordcounts hamstringing them...and still felt the need to include cuisine sections in AT8D
>>97839577>same writers who later complained about arbitrary wordcounts hamstringing them...and still felt the need to include cuisine sections in AT8DPretty sure those were talking about different books. Splatbooks are much more tight than setting books. Also, at the end of the day, Vance wrote food sections all over the place in At8D because he likes talking about food in fantasy, not because he had been looking into how that would poll well with fans. I respect writing what you like when you can much more than pandering, so.
>>97839652I respect it up to the point when it's juxtaposed with excuses for why the part of the content that actually matters to the hobby is absent. I am not going to deny the point in principle because indulging in it is how we got Ink Monkeys, I am just saying there's a time and a place for everything and that saying word limits matter is a two-way street.
Hey /tg/ I have a problem. One of my players is a genuine incel. He's 27 and I'm pretty sure he's never had sex. He definitely hasn't gotten laid in a while. He's not really ugly just kinda weird and awkward. I feel bad for him. But he is taking his extreme thirst out in the game. >every time his character, a human eldritch knight, comes back from our adventures he always tries to play up the angle of "we saved the town, where are the girls to suck my dick as thanks?">he constantly talks about how his character is 6 foot 2 (he's 5 foot 8 irl)>he talks out of his ass a lot about medieval times and says that peasant girls were way healthier than modern women.>says how farmers would be begging to marry their lithe 17 year old daughters to him>he talks about medieval demographics and criticizes the DMa works building (which is actually kinda shit to be fair) >you can just tell how excited he is talking about how there should be a dozen villages between these two cities on the map, like he is stopping just short of talking about how many nubile virgin farm girls are there for his fighter to fuckWe tried talking to him about it but he twisted it around to make the rest of us sound like we were fucking gay or something. Also his character is too important to the story to kick him, and running him as an NPC would suck the fun out of it since there's be a lot of the DM just roleplaying with himself while the rest of us watch. So....any advice? Its not worth ruining the game over by kicking him, and nothing is so blatant to be a clear social violation, but the dude is just oozing incel energy and I feel like I should subtly suggest to the DM something that will set his head on straight, and possibly help cure his mindset. Any ideas?

How important is artwork and visual aesthetics to a tabletop game?
>>97831585It's nice to have.
I'd consider it crucial.Having a few excellent artists helps to make your setting more tangible, but art can't save shitty writing.
>>97831585Judging a book by its cover is a common criticism, but there's a reason why it exist. Visuals are surprisingly important even if they have zero impact on the mechanics.
>>97831585Moderately important. Lacking artwork entirely isn't great for a system trying to draw in people, and poor quality art will draw derision as much as new eyes. Further, many people are rather visual, and the art can do things for them that quality descriptions cannot. Now to be clear, this is still less important than the rules unless you're strictly treating your tabletop game as a coffee table curio.
Important but D&D got big when some of the art looked like newspaper comic doodles, so not a make-or-break thing either

>>97837884>How does it and Dreadfleet play? Is it pretty much the same game? Have a hankering for some piracyOh nonono. There's a lot more cards and tokens involved, so much so that you need another table depending on the fleet size. But the games are so much more varied, even if you play with a small fleet. It is really an enjoyable game once it gets going though, with tons of terrain, monsters and land-based scenarios. I really wish that Man o' War got the fan revival treatment of some other games, it could really use some tinkering with.
I love Warcry but always find the campaign shallow compared to Necromunda.Friend introduced me to Wyrdcryhttps://jomblrverse.itch.io/wyrdcryHas anyone played it? To me, it does look like it keeps Warcry'a smooth gameplay but with a bit of extra character at the back end.
>>97837884>DreadfleetDreadfleet sucks, the game is a narrative scenario by scenario reenactment of the story with fixed team. The ships are not equal : 1 main character ship for each side. 3/5 ships on the Dreadfleet side had no sails, which mean they ignored the wind mechanic. 1/5 ships on Grand Alliance teams had no sails.Games are decided mostly by cards drawn more than strategic planning. There're 2 type of card draw : damage card and fate card. Ships have hull and crew, and having either of these reduced to 0 by damage card is game over, aside from the normal stat loss damage card, there're also a bunch of quirky damage cards like : your ship is on fire again and again every turn (fire : draw a bunch of damage card, can be removed in repair phase instead of restoring stat), your ship take damage again and again every turn, your ship take huge a mount of damage, your ship just died (capsized), and other quirky status damage card that are either minor inconvenient or extremely annoying. And then there're fate card : fate card made some wacky shits happen, but also determine wind strength and move it around, these affected ship with sails, pushing them and boost their movement, or stall it into a crawl. The force pushing can lead to your ship : run off the map (dead), run into monster/terrain/ships. Fate card also give upgrade! Upgrade that sometime you can't use, and sometimes you can, but it's an upgrade for the opponent. Sometime monsters appeared and attack you, and sometimes your entire team got damage.Aside from the shitty rule everything is amazing though, from the sweet cloth mat, to the artworks, to the models. I had one unused copy of it.

>>97837051Unironically the lowest stake season in the entire franchise. Season right before that they were fighting Darth Vader and his acolytes by summoning monsters and doing stand battles
>>97837051I remember when episodes were able to have more than 4minutes of plot, divinez clearly cant
>>97837051od 1 was ass but at least i can give it props for being something different and od 2 was decent having had to carry over the mess of od1. Once they got to willdress and beyond its felt derivative. It couldn't be helped as they fired some of the overdress staff and reoriented the anime to being a traditional TCG anime again. Sure some things were new for Vanguard but never really felt innovative as other TCG anime had done them. And Bushi just keeps rehashing a lot of the same themes from past series like "Vanguard is actually fun" and exploring it through character's trauma except for the fact we already have a lot of characters from past series with similar arcs so most of these new characters don't feel fresh. And all of the foreshadowing for the serious plot feels half baked like they just kept adding stuff as they went on. Like a lot of divinez s2 and PC. Or they wasted time on fluff like deluxe when they know they have clearly limited episode counts. I think they've run out of ideas and this potential year and a half off bc of the remaster should be good to get some new ideas in the room.
Wait, is there another season after this? Feels like it.
